(FROM SOUTH WALES DAILY NEWS, 9TH JANUARY, 1894.) "YJCRJMCT OF NINF, HI.'BDRE1>U¡;¡der this title Messrs. R. J. Heath and Sens, Queen-street, Cardiff, pianeforte makers, organ builders, avid music ware- housemen, have collected an imposing" array of testi- monials and Press opinions relating to the quality of the musical instruments supplied by them. The firm is so well known in Cardiff, and, indeed, throughout South Wales and the West of England, that it, is hardly necessary hers to dwell upaa its influence and commanding" position. This collection of testimonials serves, however, to do sezaethinf mere than certify to the excellence øf the instruments furnished by Messrs. Heath and Sens. It shows, in a sense, how steady is the grawth. among the general public of a desire for a knowleiga of music, and h<»w increasingly numerous, even in the homes of the working classes are manes, areuas, and harmoniums. The great majority of the letters in this list relate t-o pianos and while many of them have reference most costly instruments containing all the latest improve- ments, supplied to the well-to-de, the greater nua ber relate t" serviceable instruments purchased for the howes 6r the wage-earning portion of the community. This grewing" love for so refining an art as music is a most fävonrable sign. For though in the Principality music has for generations been the chief recreation of the people, it has for the most art been choral music in connection with churches and chapels that has occupied attention. Instru- mental music is nôw, however, receiving its fair s are of attention, and all those in true sympathy with the art must trust that the movement will go steadily onward. These testimonials hare been re- ceived from every quarter <sf the Principality, while not a few come from other portions of the United Kingdom, and some from South America, India, and other distant countries. All speak most favourably of Messrs. Heath's business methods as well as of their instruments, "¥> T "O E1TH -AND C<ONS jHLe • JL JL INVITE INSPECTION. PONTYPRIDD ACCIDENT.
PONTYPRIDD ACCIDENT. Actions Against the Taff Vale Railway Company. As a. result of the accident which oc.curnid on the Taff Vale Railway, near Treforest Junc- tion, Pontypridd. several actions have been commenced against the company for compen- sation by those who were injured and relatives of the persons killed. The defendants made an application that alithe actions, with the excep- tion of that brought by the widow of Sir. James Brown, Scott-street, Cardiff, should be stayed until the trial of that cause. An order has been made by the High Court in the terms of the application, and the defendants have given an undertaking to be bound "upon all points except damages by the ultimate result of the act-ion brought by Mrs. Brown. Mr. Harry Cousins, solicitor, Cardiff, is acting for the plaintitf, and the cause will be tried at Swansea Assizes, commencing on the 21st of next month. A special jury will be sworn, and Judge Williams will be asked at the Car- narvon Assizes to-day (Saturday) to fix a special day for the hearing of the action.
THE LITERARY POLICEMAN
THE LITERARY POLICEMAN Still at Work on His Welsh Bibliography for the Century. Mr. Charles Ashton. the literary policeman, is moving on well with his Welsh bibliography, which now contains about 10,000 entries of Welsh books, books in other language-s relating to Wales or Welsh matters, periodicals, news- papers, songs, &c., published during the present century. The work will be about four times the size of Rowlands' "Cambrian Bibliography" (1546-1800), and will be published by the National Eisteddfod Association. The society shows considerable impatience to have the work sent to press, but Mr. Ashton is deter- mined to withhold it as long as possible in order to enter ordnance maps, Acts of Parliament, &c., relating to Wales, and any other publica- tions he may receive or see. It would be an excellent thing if a complete Welsh biblio- graphy of the whole century could be produced: on the other hand, there is naturally much im- patience to get Mr. Ashton's work into type, and we hope the day is not far distant when the public will have the work on which such pains and labour have been expended in their hands.

CARDIFF MAYOR'S SALARY. Interim Injunction to be Applied for if an Increase is Granted. In the event of the motion directing- that the Mayor of Cardiff's salary be increa.sed by X200 being carried at the next meeting of the Cardiff County Council we understand that the well- known quartette who brought the recent action against Cardiff ex-mayors will forthwith make application for an interim injunction to restrain the cerporation from granting the amount. In view of Mr. Justice Romer's recent decision, the action of the corporation is deemed by a large body of ratepayers as illegal.

CARDIFF SAVINGS' BANK. i
CARDIFF SAVINGS' BANK. What Depositors will Receive as a Final Dividend. TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING EXPRESS. Sir,-—There seemb to be an impression amongst some of the depositors that they will receive 3s. in the £ dividend on the full amounts which they had deposited in the bank. This is not so. I wish to make it clear that the depositors will only receive a dividend on the balance admitted to be due to them. Take, for example, the care of a regular depositor who had, say, deposited in the bank £ 100. Out of this the depositor would have already received from the trustees 17s. 6d. in the £- £ 87 10s.—leaving a balance due of £ 12 10s., which would be the sum admitted by the official liquidator. The depositor will receive 3s. in the £ on the L12 10s., which would nWMl P-1 17s. 6d., as a final dividend.—I am, &c., WILLIAM JONES, Solicitor for the Depositors, j 29, St. Mary-street, Cardiff.

Â- .Ll DRUNK IN THE DOCK. Blaina Parents Prosecuted for Cruelty to ft Girl. An unusual occurrence took placB at Blaina Petty Sessions on Friday (before Dr. W. E. W illiams. Mr. James Phillips, and Mr. Titus Phillips) in a case of alleged cruelty to a child, —Henry Hemmings, 35, collier, Nantyglo, and Catherine, his wife. were charged. at the in- stance of the National Society for the FreHm- tion of Cruelty to Children, with ill-treating and neglecting Mary Elizabeth Hemmings. their daughter, aged nine years, between December 1, 1893, and May 17, 1SS4-.—Henry, whose demeanour in the dock was rathe# excit- able, vehemently denied the charge, but his wife admitted that she had beaten her daughter on several occasions.—Mr. Lewis E. Webb, of Pont-ypool, in opening the e:c for the prosecu- tion was subjected to repeated interruptions by the father, and in the course of a descrip- tion of how the girl had been tied to a chair by him all night he exclaimed, "You are a liaj." Mr. Webb could not proceed further, and their worships consulted, after which the Chairman sa.id they had decided that Henry Eenimings i was not in a fit coaditon to plead. He was! drunk, and would be remanded in custody to Ebbw Yale Police-court on Thursday next. Rachel Woods, a widow, living by clefendants at Weslev-buildings. Nantyglo, and the child gave evidence to justify the remand, and the ma.le prisoner was afterwards removed to the cells in an excited condition. The charge against Mrs. Hemmings was adjourned to the same, court, and she took charge of "the girl, refusing to allow her to remain in the custody of Inspector Coates, of the society, until the hearing of the case. hearing of the case.

GWYNNE-VAUGHAN -ESTATE. On Friday last at the King's Head Hotel, Llandevery. JUt. John Williams, auctioneer, Llandovery, offered for sale by public auction the freehold agricultural and sporting estate called Cefn, situate in the parish of Llan- fairarybrvn, and distant about four miles from Llandovery, and being the property of Mr. A. S. Gwynne-Yaughan, of Cefn, the petitioner in the recent sensational divorce suit, Gwynue- Vaughan v. Gwynne-Vaughan and Griffiths. There was a very large attendance of persons, but the bidding was far from being bi-isk. The property was put up for sale in six lots, but neither of these was sold. The bidding on Lot 1. called Cwmchrychau and Creigiau.wa.s fairly brisk, the property going up to ,£1.600 without the timber, but as this did not reach the reserve price the lot was withdrawn. Scarcely any bidding took place on the other lots. The soliciter for the vendor was Mr. A. Gwynne-Vaughan. solicitor. Builth. This is the second unsuccessful sale of this property.

IMARKING OF THE MANGO.
MARKING OF THE MANGO. Two New Expressions of Opinion on the Indian Mystery. The current number of India naturally (says the Pall Mall Guzette) contains several articles which treat the marking of the mango tree. Sir William Wedderburn, M.P.. remarks that" no doubt by getting up this scare the Spectator has done the Government of India. a disservice. But it will not be without its uses if the British public is thereby induced to open its eyes to our real dangers, and to insist upon such inquiry I and reforms as will give to India that cant era- ment and prosperity which, with reasonably fair play, she would undoubtedly enjoy." Dr. W. A. Hunter, M.P., declares that there are three Indian perils (1) The extreme costliness of British government (2) the attempt to im- pose upon the people British ideas of morality and religion; and (.5) the overbearing" mameer of the Anglo-Indians towards natives, especially those of higher rank.

Deviccs in Dentistry,
Deviccs in Dentistry, 1 TOOLS OF THE UP TO DATE TOOTH SURGEON, I Pulling Your Molars is no Longer Necessary as they can be now Patched and Tinkered, The day of reckless tooth pulling has pswseA There is not one tooth lost now where there used to be 100, and it is a mighty poor tooth that the skilled operator of to-day cannot render far better and more serviceable than the best pos- sible false one. Few people have anything but the slightest notion of the revolution is dentistry that has taken place within the past few years. Merely with respect to what. elec- tricity has accomplished in that branch cf medi- cal science, there is a. good deal to be WR.. By the use of an electric light in connectio* with the little mirror introduced Jht(¡ the mouth, the teeth and alveolar processes are brilliantly illuminated and rendered translucent. Thus anything wrong about the teeth may be quickly discovered. For example, dead tooth- pulp shows black and opaque. Perhaps the dead tooth may be hidden in the jaw. never having been erupted, and may have been the obscure cause of trouble far years. The light reveals it at once. Facial neuralgia, by the way, is nearly always due to a dead tooth, and may be stopped by a good dentist. Electricity is most valuable. as a mcr ve power for tooth-boring tools, which, strange tf say, cause, less pain the faster they go. Most people now grown up can re-call the excruciating pain caused by the excavating instrument which the dentist of a generation ago slowly re- volved between his fingers. The "burrs,' now made for sueh work. are much finer than they were half a dozen years ago, being capable of cutting through steel bars. Furthermore the laborious method of turning them out by hassd has been superseded by a. machine which produces them at a very small cost. The machine-made burrs are much more perfect, those less in siza than a pin-head being too small for observation with the naked eye, but exhibiting under a magnifying glass the forms of most exquisite cutting tools. Electricity is employed also for pulling teeth. The mechanism consists of a two-cell ba-ttery with vibrator at,achmerit-t-ke latter a thin strip of metal fastened at both ends and made to vibrate 1,000 or more times a, second by a. current. At each vibration the current is cut and renewed again, the effeet being to give a steady flow of the fluid. To make sure that the flow is satisfactory, the opera- tor tunes the machine with a little reed tuning- pipe until the strip of metal tiars "A." To the battery are attached three wires. Two of them have handles at the end, while the third w attached to the forceps. The patient grasps the handles, the electricity is turned on sud- denly, and the dentist simultaneously applie* his forceps to the tooth. The instant the tooth, is touched, it, as well as the surrounding parts, becomes insensible to pain. A jerk and it i. out. The latest and most ingenious rew of the dental surgeon is "implantation," i.e., the setting of new teerdh into the jaw. For this j purpose real teeth are employed, and not arti- ficial ones. Cocaine- having been first- applied for producing local anaesthesia, a hole is drilled in the jawbone, and into this socket a good tooth, newly drawIl from somebody's jaw, is set. If the patient is :11; and vigorou* the osseous si-ructure suon closes around it. and by the time the gum is healed rite tooth is ready for use. It should last- for from three- to ten years. In the ca-se of an elderly or feeble person it may be fastened in place by silver wires passing around the jawbone. One of the most important improvements in modern dental practice is on the point of being- accomplished. Iv will consist, in the substitution of porcelain for gold in the filling of teeth. For this purpose a piece of thin platinum foil is introduced into the "cavity," and so manipulated as to take the exact form of the hole, as if it were intended as a lining. Then it is carefuly withdrawn so as not to disturb its euape. Thus is obtained a. mold from which a porcelain cast may be made to fill the canity exactly. This is secured in place by cement. The trouble is that no cement yet- invented is proof against the dissolving power of t-he fluids in the mouth. Acordingly, this process of "inlaying." as it is called, must remain to a great. extent un- availahle until a non-soluble cement shall be discovered.
