IWreck of the Cardiff H liberal…
?--?- -?_?- I Wreck of the Cardiff H liberal ihousand." I Several efforts have been made to get the officials to call a meeting, but, so far, thess efforts have proved unavailing. This reluctance is, doubtless, due to the fact that the gulf between the old and the younger Radicals is widening, the differcnc.es increasing in number and extent.—Morning Paper. ?. ?.? ? ?- f' T T 2..1- 1
1-LOCAL AMUSEMENTS.
1- LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. Dangers of London at the Cardiff Theatre Royal. Few melodramas are more suited to the taste of beliday audiences than that which is being presented at Mr. Fletcher's house during the present week. In The Dangers of London3' incident follows incident and sensation incident follows incident and sensation follows sensation with amazing and bewil- dering rapidity. rfrue, some of tne mechanical arrangements—such, for instance, as the "raft and fast express'' scenes—are not altogether novelties, but they are exciting and interesting notwithstanding, and in the intreduction oi the tell-tale phonograph the author (Mr. F. A. Scudamore) has brought his play into touch with the inventions of up-to-date science with remarkable success. On the whole, the drama has sterling merit, and if the author s platitudes are sometimes commonplace, it must be admitted that the situations are moving and the pathos genuine. As Frank Forrest, the much-afflicted hero Mr. W. H. Ha-llatt on Monday evening o-ave one of those masterly portrayals that commanded the absolute sympathies of the l&r°"e audience, and which was always natural. although his surroundings were ofitimes the direct opposite. For the part of ofitimes the direct opposite. For the part of Mary Forrest, the ever-faithful wife of Frank, no finer exponent than Miss Blanche Steele couid be found, Mr. W. G. Leonard, Mr. J. C. Murray, Mr. H. L. Osmond, and Mr. W. Hoyers all played their parts with perfect success. Letty and Gertrude Weir were ably represented by the Misses Adah Garrett and Kate Romer. the former of whom was as vivacious as the latter was dignified. In the matters of scenery and dresses Mr. W. K. Hallatt s company is excellently equipped. Cardiff Empire. It is an old saying, we believe, among theatrical acting managers that a house is never so full but that another one may get inside but the appearance of both houses at the Empire on Monday night led one to have very strong doubts as to the truth of it. for. as a matter of fact, almost as many again as the packed houses contained had perforce to go empty away, and the nature of the entertain- ment was ample vindication of this practical appreciation. It did most certainly de- serve the title of aBank Holiday programme. Least—at all events in stature but not last by any means in talent, came those two diminutive specimens of humanity, the Rossows, described on the bill as the Midget Marvels of the Microcosm." These two talented little people went through a perfor- mance which for grace and cleverness, would do credit to many of the so- called strong men, wrestling and lifting heavy weights, and altogether giving a most interest- ing exhibition. Vihen, at the conclusion, the exhibitor placed one on each hand, and held them out at arms' length, the enthusiasm found vent in torrents of enthusiastic applause. Prom the moment that Frazer and Mac came on to the stage nothing was visible in the audience but a sea of laughing faces, and even had one not been gble to see the audience the sound of laughter --e, would have amply proved the success which this. clever lady and gentleman were achieving. Parker's performing dogs bore witness to almost supernatural intelligence on the part of the animals, and a world of patient, painstaking training on the part of their master. The leaps, which were accomplished by one of the animals must certainly be seen to be believed. The laughter created by the boxing- dogs, Corbett and Mitchell, was uncontrollable. While mentioning this turnj it is fair to say that the somersaulting dog wa.s by far the best ever seen in Cardiff. Two clever and pretty girls, the Carlovvs, amply justified the award of merit which the audiences at the other merit which the audiences at the other halls on Mr. Stall's tour have so freely accorded them. They proved themselves, both in song and dance, a very admirable turn in- deed. Frank Leon not only infuses no inconside- rable amount of comedy into his vocal efforts, but also dances as few in the business can dance, he obtaining round after round of applause from the l< Shonis," who evi- dently appreciated his marvellous stepping." The Brady and Johnson Combination, compris- ing Rose Nye, Marie Johnson, Jockey Watson, and Albert Brady, in their sketch entitled Little Bull Pup," also forced the crowded audiences to exercise their risible faculties until there could not have been a side- in the hall that was not aching. Miss Flo Wood, a very pleasing serio- comedian, also gave thorough satisfaction both in dress, appearance, and vocalisation. These, with Miss Aggie Blomfield, a pert and clever little songstress and dancer, of whom very likely more will be heard, completed a pro- gramme which provided the devotees of the Empire, or whoever takes what is found at the ¡ Empire, with sufficient buttons to last them ,I' for the rest of their natural life. Newport. There could hardly be a stronger or more varied holiday bill than that which was put before the two big houses on Monday evening. Cazman, the great master shadowist, was a novel and most agreeable treat. The great fun which was produced by the Juanita Burlesque Sketch Combination was at once uproarious and genuine. In sensational hand jumping Letta and Foden delighted the house Little Flossie, the American child marvel, had specialities which distinguish her from all prodigies which have appeared recently, whilst in the black line the Columbia Trio of Singers capture the confec- tionery easily. Swansea. The bill of fare presented at the Swansea Empire 011 Monday bristled with attractive- ness. The Happy Haytors, in the side- splitting go-as-you-please absurdity enti- tIed" The Sultan's Pet," was received at both performances with much enthusiasm. The well-known vocalists and patterers, the Courtneys. made a decided hit, and Ivate Paradise, with her troop of pretty- girls, created quite as favourable an impres- sion as at Cardiff last week. Professor Burko, who is one of the cleverest men in his line on the road. described on the bill as a mystifier of electric smartness," aroused the" audience to screams of laughter by his performance. The professor culti- vates a freshness in his magical dis- plays, which is far away from the worn-out style ordinarily displayed. The Espoliers, a clever troupe of gymnasts, went through their antics with infinite credit, the descent down the single wire while sus- pended by the teeth creating profound agtpwgh- ment. The pertoraruice 01 joe xves, me m- strumental comedian, and the two Bostons, the bullfighters, brought to a close an excellent programme, which reflects the highest, creoxt upon the enterprising manager—Mr. Oswald Stell. Cardiff A!ham bra. This popular house of varieties was simply packed on Monday night, and the bill of fare provided by the management gave the greatest satisfaction. The most important item in the programme this week is the baboon and donkey show, from the Empire, London. For the time being the stage is turned into a circus ring, and^thc performance introduced by the two 1' animals is both clever and ludicrous. The baboon goes through all the usual circus tricks on ? the t donkey's back. and creates roars of laughter: The Everemond. Trio, who pose as musical grotesques, contortionists. &c., bad a grand reception, and Maud i.^eamer sustained the reputation of that talented family. Onzalo's aerial flights are very sensational in character, and have the merit of being, in it measure, original. M'Cormack and Casey, who are well known in Cardiff, are as entertaining as ever, 1, their smart -'patter" producing the greatest hilarity among the audience. Mr. Syd Godfrey, a character vocalist; The Bernandas, who pose as burlesque performers and Miss Ida Bailey, a transformation dancer, complete a capital p1'0gramme. Oiiee Minstrels in Cardiff. A large number of persons assembled in the Park-hall. Cardiff, to hear a oerformance by the Ohee Minstrels on Easter Monday evening. The programme consisted of contributions byJWee Curley Brabyn, Mr. R. P. Jones. Mr. Harry Rose, Mr. D. Bryant and troupe, Mr. Jameson White, Mr. J. Burke, Little Tit, Mr. J. Keileher, Mr. Jess Clatworthy. and Mr. A. Praukerd, The songs were grave and gay and were well ren- dered, and the performance concluded with the comic sketch entitled Inscratchuscrat- chulura." Cardiif Panopticon- That the Cardiff Panopticon has wen its way into public favour was amply exemplified on Easter Monday. The place was crowded throughout the day. and at night the crowd was so great that some hundreds could not gain admission. The stage performances in the after- noon and evening were, with perhaps one excep- tion. exceptionally good. Leoni Clarke, who intro- duces to the spectators 170 cats, rats, mice, canaries, and cockatoos, simply beats anything in this department which has been seen in Cardiff. The very idea of cats and mice per- forming together appears ludicrous, but those who will look in at the Panopticon this week will find that training can even accomplish this marvellous feat. and Jocko come on the stage as monkeys, and the tricks they play are most amusing. Wallis and Langton are responsible for supplying most of the fun, and compare very favourably with the remainder of the excellent turns." The side shows are particularly good. I England's performing fieas, about 40 m number, perform feats which must be seen to be believed. An optical delusion, The Boy Mahatma," is very attractive, and among the phenomenon,* are the Clock-eyed Lady and Pierre, the man with an elastic skin. The maze and the rink created immense amusement on Monday.

RADICAL SECESSIONS.
1oI<iû4.?,?'?- -?_?._?-? RADICAL SECESSIONS. Mr. W. Saunders Explains the Reasons I for His Action. Mr. W. Saunders, M.P., in his letter to Mr. Thomas Ellis, the Chief Government Whip, severing his connection with the Gladstonian party, protests against the Premier's references to the taxation of ground values in his St. James's-hall speech* from which the hon. inem- ber draws the irresistible inference that the matter will not be dealt with in' the forth- coming Budget. "To coolly propose the un- abated continuance of the present unjust sys-' tem because the opponents of the reforms we propose are now admitting its justice and -the necessity for its adoption would," continues Mr. Saunders, be regarded as buffoonery, n uttered by irresponsible persons. In the mouth of the Prime .Minister it is a mockery of human suffering, a denial of common justice, and a breach of solemn promises by which power has been obtained." Mr. Saunders is of opinion that Lord Roseberv's utterances lia^e made confusion worse confounded. The hon. member recognises the administrative, imjirovo- ments in the conditions of industry made by the present Government, but, he adds, so long as the Government fail to fulfil the promises of the Newcastle programme with regaid to the adjustment, of taxation I cannot regard invself as one of their supporters."

SUICIDES IN PARIS.
SUICIDES IN PARIS. More Successful and Unsuccessful Attempts Reported. I Hlt;, l? I-V' A Paris telegram through Dalziel says -.—The epidemic of suicide now prevailing in Paris pro duced three deaths on Sunday. A young dress- maker. aged eighteen, suffocated herself with charcoal fumes through disappointment in love A similar reason induced a young man to shoot himself through the head. The third suicide was that of a man 71 years of age, who hanged himself to the bedpost because he was suffering from nn incurable disease. A sad story is that of a young woman of 24, whose attempt at self- destruction was unsuccessful. It appeared that I she had been betrayed and abandoned in Paris by her lover, therefore she attempted to drown herself by leaping from the Pont de la Concord' into the Seine, but was stopped. A demestic servant endeavoured to commit suicide in an extraordinary manner. She poured a quantity of petroleum over her clothing and set fire to it, with the object of burning herself to death. She was terribly injured, and taken to the hos- pital in a hopeless condition.

Deserted at the Altar.
Deserted at the Altar. AN AMERICAN BRIDE S PITIFUL 11 POSITION. EHa Has Soever Forgotten the Deception and Repels Her Lover's Re- newed Advances. A sensational law suit does not grow ous of every breach of promisB case. A tevr years ago Ella Lea and George Miner were en- gaged to be married. He was a trader for a. | big manufacturing establishment in the Ameri- can town of Toledo, and she was a girl whose nimble fingers earned her own living and assisted in the support of a widowed mother. The wedding day was fixed, and when the momentous hour arrived the girl, clad in her bridal gown. surrounded by her friends. awaited the coming of the bridegroom. The clergyman was there, but Miner did not come. Anxiety was followed by apprehension :md then despair, and as the guests silently departed the bridal veil was moist with tears. The man who had 80 cruelly deceived her left the city, remained away three months and then returned. Her friends urged her to bring suit for breach of promise, a-rguiug that as she was in moderate circumstances and he drew a large salary there was complete justification for such a, course "No," she replied, "if his love for me was so weak as to urge him to leave nte at the altar. I do jjoz care to see him again." She appeared to have effaced his memory from her heart, and wa-s again gay and happy. Daring recent hard times she lost her situation. She searched in vaiki for employment, and was nearly dis- couraged. when finally she was told that the firm for which her recreant lover worked was in need of help. She hesitated a. moment, but reasoning that she would only have to deal with the foreman she went to the ofhee and asked to see the foreman. Presently she was face to face with George Miller. She trem- bled and grew white and faint, and the man looked guilty aDd confused. At-last- she said. "I wanted to see the foreman." "I air, the foreman." he replied. "Oh, I did not know that," she said. "I am glad you have bees promoted. The reaeon I called is that I losi my old position, and was told there was a chance here." With much relief, he re- sponded. "Well. just at present. Ella, there is no opening, but if you will call again in about a week I can find soraetliing for you to do." She thanked him and withdrew, while he col- lapsed into the nearest chair and realised what he had lost. In a week she returned, got a good position, and is IKJW at work in t-iie establishment, to all appearances contented and unconcerned. A thorueswid timos he lias intimated that a renewal of former associa- tions would make him the Irappiest man 111 the world, but she kindly bat firmly repels all advances, and never by word or look shows that s-he regretted his absence on the day they were to have been made man aiid wife. ? -?-

This cat lately died peacefully, and when the news got about some neighbours made a collection oi two hundred francs for the purpose of erecting some sort of monument.
