SICKNESS AT THE SMALLS.I
SICKNESS AT THE SMALLS. I Terrible Sufferings of the Chief Light- Keeper. The Smalls Lighthouse is situated nineteen miles north-west of St. Ann's Head, and is one of the most exposed positions in the whole of the British Isles, being open to the full fury of the Atlantic Ocean, and this lonely and desolate rock is only accessible, for the purposes of relief, &c., in favourable weather. It was not I, until Tuesday evening that the Trinity yacht Siren, under Captain Emerson, succeeded in haying communication with the lighthouse keepers for the past three weeks, notwith- standing- the continuous and persistent efforts that have been made to that end, as signals had been made that one of the keepers was ill. The man, who proved to be the chief light-keeper Mr. Sibert, was taken off the- rock with considerable difficulty on Tuesday and conveyed to Pembroke Dock, under the supervision of Dr. E. A. Saunders, medical officer to the Trinity Board, where he lies in a weak condition. The unfor- tunate man had only been on the lighthouse some two days, when he was attacked with inflammation of the bowels, from which he has suffered for nearly three weeks without being able to obtain any assistance, beyond that of his two comrades on the rock, until rescued on Tuesday.

iWELSH COAL TRADE.
i WELSH COAL TRADE. Prices Going Down and Colliers' Wages Must be Lowered. A correspondent writes to the Tari4n y Gweithiwr on the outlook of South Wales collieries for 1894. The bright prospects of higher wages, he says, have suddenly become overclouded, and if something is not done by the colliers themselves, and that right early, all the hopes of higher wages will have vanished. I Since Christmas prices have gone down at least 2s. per ton, and it looks as if the supply exceeded the demand." The action of the buyers of coal in putting their heads together in the belief that they can thereby compel the I colliery owners to sell at lower prices will have the effect of lowering wages for the whole twelvemonth. Why not, then, diminish the output? "That would secure higher wages to the extent of 40 per cent. above the standard for the whole year." But if this is to be done it must be done at once, as if prices once ccme down it will take, perhaps, years te raise them again. If the prices, how- ever, are good during February it will ensure a big rise in the April audit, amd if the colliery owners understand that wages will necessarily be high and costs generally heavy during the TCM, will 'lÙ. KifiUs:: unsc* and thiw sectrre such higher wages for the men. There- fore," adds the writer," let us entreat our repre- sentatives on the scale, for their own sakes as well as our own, to take the matter in hand without delay."
Fatal Draught of Ink.
Fatal Draught of Ink. Francis Quinn, aged 60, a well-known wine and spirit broker and commission agent, who has offices in Liverpool and Belfast, was found dead on Wednesday in the Main Bridewell, Liverpool. He was found unconscious in his office on Tuesday night, and taken by the police to the hospital where it was thought he was drunk. He was then removed to the Bridewell and it was afterwards ascertained that he had swallowed a quantity of ink in mistake for wine. ?

WELSH SECRET SOCIETIES.
WELSH SECRET SOCIETIES. Antagonism Between federationists and Mabonites. A prominent gentleman, whose interest in the collieries of Wales is represented by an output of over a million tons per annum, interviewed by one of our correspondents on the subject of secret societies amongst the colliers, said:—" I know there were secret meetings and so-called odges amongst certain colliers preparatory to the outbreak in August last, but I am not aware of any secret societies at present existing. This, however, I believe, that there is underhanded work going on, and sooner or later results may be seen. This underhanded work is the action of a section, I believe, of the general federationist sympathisers, who wish to bring about a collapse of the Sliding- scale Association, and substitute for it the government of the Miners' General Federa- tion. The tactics displayed last year will, I should not wonder, be again repeated. The agitators show their own doubts of the superiority of the federation organisation by keeping aloof from the great body of the middle aged and thought- ful colliers, and approaching the most ignorant and thoughtless section, the young hauliers and If they had faith in their own statements, we would fancy that they would seek the fullest investigation after open-air or public meetings, and not try to influence by strategy. The weak side of the colliers is certainly the hauliers. They are the most ignorant. In a long course of colliery life I have never met with but one haulier who showed any tendency to religious profession." Our correspondent adds :—The statements of the colliery owner as to the existence of anta- gonism between the federationists aiid Mabonites and to underhanded work are quite sufficient proof that the statement made to me of secret societies now at work is a fact. Of course, if known to the leading coalowners, there would not be much secrecy about the matter. A little time will show further develop- ment of the movement, and good work has been unquestionably done by my informant in dis- closing it.
TELEPHONE USEFUL.
TELEPHONE USEFUL. Helped Police to a Smart Capture at Pontypridd, A remarkable instance of the use of the tele- phone for police purposes was given at Ponty- pridd on Wednesday evening in connection with a smart capture which took place in that town. It appears that about five o'clock p.m. Mr. John Rees, coal merchant, of Cardiff, gave informa- tion to the police at Cardiff that on the previous morning a haulier named John Ball had decamped with a valuable horse and coal wagon belonging to him. The information was tele- phoned to the Pontypridd police, and half an hour after the information had been first lodged at Cardiff Ball was arrested at the Clarence Hotel, Pontypridd, by Sergeant Thomas Davies and Police-constable Harries, it appearing that the horse and wagon had been sold to Mr. Richard Taylor, a well-known local hauling contractor, for Cl5. WELSH COLLIERIES. An Enormous Output of Coal Since the Last Strike. The output from the whole of the South Wales collieries, particularly those in the Bhondda Valley, is extremely large. Since the strike Mabon's Day is no longer regarded as a general holiday, and the output per man has not been so large for many years. The Taff Vale Railway last week conveyed to various places 285,000 tons of coal. This is the greatest quantity ever conveyed by them. The shipments at Penarth -57,000 tons—were very heavy, and at Cardiff Docks the quantity of coal brought down by the Taff was about 15,000 tons in excess of the usual quantity. The Taff Vale Railway also conveyed over 10,000 tons to Newport, a quantity con- siderably in excess of the average, but the quantity conveyed to Swansea over the new railway shows no sign of increase. The Rhymney Railway also did well, but the increase in the output from the Monmouthshire collieries is not so great as from those in South Wales, yet the increase here would be nearly 20,000 tons in one week. In the Ogmore Valley things are very brisk, and the Great Western Railway added considerably to the Barry shipments, and also those from Cardiff.
THE LAW'S DELAYS.,
THE LAW'S DELAYS. Here is a Record Case from South Wales. The London correspondent of the Bristol Mercury says --One has heard of many cases of abnormally prolonged litigation both in fiction and real life, but there is a South Wales arbi- tration case now running in London which promises to take a lot of beating. It is a private arbitration concerning a colliery in South Wales, in which Mr. Inskip appears on one side against counsel on the other. Up to date there have been 199 sittings. The evidence alone has occupied 170 days, and the well-known Bristol lawyer, who is as noted for keeping to the point as he is for his grip and mastery of the facts of an intricate legal case, has just finished a 25 days' epeeeh At the next sitting the speeches of the counsel on the other side will be commenced. It would be interesting to know in what year the arbitrator will finish his review of the evidence and argumeats and deliver hie
Death in a Fin Point.
Death in a Fin Point. BLOOD POISONING FOLLOWf SKIN PUNCTURE. The Sufferer Becomes Almost Crar With Pain ere the End Comes. John Will, a silk weaver, residing is Nev York, has died from blood poisoning produced by a fish bone, which penetrated his finger seven weeks ago. Will came from Germany with his family, consi sting of his wife and three children, a year ago. He secured a position in a silk mills, and was known as an indus- trious, sober fellow, whose only weak- ness was fishing. When holidays and Sundays came round Will always started out oarly in the morning to deplete the nearest waters of their finny inhabitants. He was of a somewhat taciturn disposition, but one subject he was never known to refuse to discuss, and that was his pet hobby fish tales. His fondness for fishing eventually caused his death. Five ago b'lidneBa is the nil- grew slack, and WUl was ELmous those who were thrown out of employment. He occupied all of his spare time in indulging in hit favourite pastime, which incidentally added to the scanty larder at home, which was sadly depleted through his enforced idleness. Seven weeks ago he left home at five a.m., telling his wife that he was going to the Hudson to fish. He was away all day and returned at seven p.m., after a good day's sport, with one pound and a half of sea bass as the result of his prowess. Will told a good story about a fish that he didn't catch, and then began to prepare the bass for supper. In cleaning fit the middle finger of his right hand was penetrated by one of the dorsal fins. The wound, though painful. was not sufficient to cause him to seek medical attention. The latter part of December the finger began to swell, and on the 27th Will picked out a piece of fish bone from the old wound. The inflammation increased, and the next day he called on Dr. G. Starke for treatment. Lotions and poultices were applied without benefit. Will vowed never to go fishing again—and he kept his word. The inflammation extended through his arm, which was swollen to twice its normal size, and his suffering was intense. Dr. Starke bled him with leeches, and finally flanced the finger. Day by day the man's suf" erings increased. The pain kept him awake at night and nearly crazed him during the day. Finally Dr. Brugman was called in consulta- tion. It was decided that necrosis had set in, and an operation was determined upon. Dr. Starke performed the operation. Being unable to administer ether and operate at the same time, the doctor concluded not to place Will under anaesthetics. His fourteen-year-old son John held his father's hand while the physician cut the member open and scraped out the dead bone. The patient rallied for awhile, hut began to aink, and finally died in great agony. While performing the operation Dr. Starke accidentally cut his finger while opening a can to procure some iodoform gauze to bind his patient's wound. The injury was upon the same finger of the right hand and was located in exactly tbfi same position v was patient's. The doctor, in his haste, bathed the wounded member in a basin of water in which Will's wound had been washed. The doctor's finger began to swell, and ho cauterised the wound with pure carbolic acid. He is now anxiously awaiting the result of his injury.
