WELSH LAND COMMISSION.
WELSH LAND COMMISSION. Preparing Evidence in Cardigan- shire. Our Aberayron correspondent writes :—A series of meetings arranged in accordance with the mandate of the county council, are being held in Cardiganshire to prepare evidence for the Welsh Land Commission. The attendance has been very meagre, and hardly a farmer has taken part. At Aberayron the meeting was timed to begin at six o'clock, and the Town-hall was lighted in anticipation of the gathering. A bell was sent out imploring the townspeople to attend and avoid a fiasco. The intention to hold the meeting in the main hall was abandoned, and it was seven o'clock before proceedings commenced in the assembly-room. Only a few farmers from the immediate neighbourhood attended. A preacher occupied tke chair, and the meeting was addressed by shopkeepers, a schoolmaster (who had tried farming and had given it up), a lawyer, and other non-agricul- turists. A resolution in favour of establishing a land court and calling upon the Government to advance money to the tenants to buy farIUe at a low rate of interest was submitted. An effort was made to induce a farmer to support the resolution, but not one responded. On being put to the meeting, some twenty hands out of about 60, including children, supported, but the negative was not submitted at all. A committee was held after the meeting, but nothing was done, and it stands adjourned to Monday next.
TITHE WAR IN WEST WALES.
TITHE WAR IN WEST WALES. Interviews with the Home Secre- tary. The blank refusal of Mr. Robert Lewis to proceed to the execution in the parish of Pen- bryn, Cardiganshire, of warrants for the re- covery of tithes, has evidently brought things to a head. We understand that a few days back the Home Secretary was waited upon, first by Mr. C. M. Williams (Aberystwith) and the chief-constable; and, secondly, by Mr. J. H. Evans (registrar of the Newcastle-Emlyn County-court) and Mr. Robert Lewis. The question of police protection was, we believe, the chief matter brought under Mr. Asquith's notice. A report on the subject will be presented at the next meeting- of the standing joint com- mittee for Cardiganshire.
IN DIRE DISTRESS.
IN DIRE DISTRESS. Smalls Lighthouse Keeper Seriously Indisposed. On the 9th instant the master of a Milford and Waterferd passenger steamer reported at Mil- ford that distress signals were being made from the Smalls Lighthouse as his vessel passed. The Trinity tender Siren was at once despatched to the lighthouse from New Milford, but, owing to the heavy sea running, she was unable to approach the rocks on which the lighthouse stands. Every day since the Siren has put out to sea, but failed to communicate, except by signal, owing to the bad weather. It appears that the principal lighthouse-keeper is serioutly ill, and requires medical attention.
SOUTH WALES COAL WAIL. '
SOUTH WALES COAL WAIL. Possible Action Against Charterers for Demurrage. We understand it is possible that at the forth- coming assizes certain actions will be entered on behalf of some of the shipowners against char- terers for demurrage in connection with the non-supply of c&al during the time of the coal war in South Wales last summer. A number of interesting legal questions are involved in the contemplated action.
ANOTHER SECESSION TO THE CHURCH
ANOTHER SECESSION TO THE CHURCH Our Barmouth correspondent writes :—There has been for some time a rumour floating in the air that a promising young minister and pastor, who is also a distinguished graduate, and who is in charge of a church in Merioneth, was con. templating going over to the Church. The report had became so common that the deacons of the church of which he is minister felt it their duty to put themselves right with the ceuntry and to afford the minister the opportunity of either denying the rumour or to confirm it. So at the close of the service last Sunday one of the deacons, in the presence of the others, told the minister of the rumour, and asked him for either a denial or otherwise. How- ever, no definite statement was made that night, but early the next day the deacons received a letter of resignation from the minister. Although the minister referred to has not stated in so many words that this step is taken with the object of entering the Established Church, yet it is almost certain that in the course of a few days he will be admitted into the Communion of the Church.
THE CARMARTHEN MURDER.
THE CARMARTHEN MURDER. Our Carmarthen reporter states that it has been ascertained from the borough under- sheriff (Mr. Thomas Walters), that he has just heard from Mr. Justice Kennedy, who is now at Lampeter Assizes, that the county of Car- marthen cases enly will be taken on Saturday next at the Carmarthenshire winter assizes. The murder case from the borough will, there- fore, not be taken until Monday, but the grand jury for the borough must attend en Saturday morning, when the charge will be delivered to them at eleven o'clock punctually.
PONTYPRIDD STATION.
PONTYPRIDD STATION. Abandonment of the Proposed Alterations. It will be remembered that some time ago the Taff Vale Railway Company proposed to re- build and extend their Pontypridd Station, at a cost of from £20,000 to £ 25,000. The intended alterations included, amongst other things, the L widening of the bridge carrying the railway across High-street, while from the present entrance to the Wheat Sheaf public-house was to be fenced in by the company, and a new road to be constructed on the site now occupied by the block of buildings in that locality, a-ad was to come out in High-street at a spot near the Taff Vale Hotel. All the arrange- ments proceeded satisfactorily until the plans of the new road were submitted to the Pontypridd Local Board, when it appears that those plans showed that the proposed road would have a much steeper gradient than the one which loads through Station-terrace, and two precipitous dips were consequently formed where none now exist. The local board deemed it unwise to accept a road which was not equal to the present one. This objection wa.s laid before the Taff Vale Railway Company, and it is now understood tha.t the proposed new station is to be altogether abandoned, owing to the opposition thus offered. Whether this is so or not, as regards the site of the present station, however, it is certain that the erection of a com- modious station at ton typridd cannot be much longer delayed. Locally, the possibility of reverting to the Gelliwastad Road site is discussed pretty freely, owing to the fact that the corapany have already acquired a Wesleyan Chapel and a whole street of houses quite recently, ostensibly for the extension of facilities for goods traffic.

THE MONTREAL OUTRAGE.
THE MONTREAL OUTRAGE. A Eeuter's telegram from Montreal on Wed- nesday says — MM. Mercier, Pelland, and De Ma.rtigny were to-day brought before the Court of Special Sessions for sentence, having yesterday pleaded guilty to a charge of con spiracy to damage the Nelson Monument in Cartier-square to the extent of 20dols. Judge Dugas fined them each 23dels. In an address to the court the Judge eulogised the memory of Nelson and eulogised the British for honouring their great naval hero. He was satisfied the conspirators did not realise the gravity of their act, and concluded by saying that the monument weuld remain in its place without injury from French Canadians.
THE FRENCH NAVY.
THE FRENCH NAVY. A C7eawal News telegram from Paris on Thursday night says —The persistent labours of M. Clemenoeau and other leading journalists to expose the defects and inadequacy of the French Navy are about to receive important recognition. I have the best authority for stating that the Government has decided upon appointing forthwith an extra Parliamentary or Special Commission to inquire into the question of naval supplies and armaments. This commission is to be composed of eleven Deputies, seven Senators, two State Auditcrrs, one Councillor of State, and seven naval experts.
GROCERS AND CO-OPERATION.
GROCERS AND CO-OPERATION. Deputation to Sir Edward Reed, M.P. On Thursday afternoon a deputation, (xm- sisting of Mr. R. Benjamin, Mr. Ballard, Mr. D. Davies (Aberdare), Mr. Wm. Griffith, and Mr. Parker (secretary), representing' the Cardiff Grocers' Association, waited upon Sir Edward J. Reed, K.C.B., M.P., at the Royal Hotel, Cardiff, in reference to the teaching of the co-operative system in board schools.— Mr. Benjamin stated that the action of the Government on this question was very unfair to a large section of the trading community, and not beneficial to the public. The co- operative stores of the present day. he said, were worked by capitalists for their own benefit, and in many oases large profits were made.—Mr. Griffith stated that the. text-book issued by Mr. Arnold Foster on this question was very misleading. Mr. Foster stated, for instance, that sugar could be bought at a co-operative store for 2d. per pound, whereas a private trader charged 4d. per pound. Nothing could be more ridiculous, because nearly all householders knew thpt sugar could be bought cheaper from the private trader than from a co-operative store. The cus- tomers at the stores were ready to pay 20 per cent. more for their goods because they had a chance of 10 per cent, being returned to them in dividend at the end of the year. In many places the co-operative store was nothing more or less than a truck shop. It was dominated by the "gaSec-s." and the mi who refused io deal there were quickly informed that their services were not required at the works.—Sir Edward Reed promised that the subject should receive his bcot atten- tion. He was bound to say that co-operation pure and simple was a very good thing for the community; but if the system were used merely for the sake of gain the co-operative store must be placed on the same level as the ordinary trader's shop.

THE CHURCH IN WALES.
THE CHURCH IN WALES. The London correspondent of the Manchester GUiardian says:—I learn that the "Church Defenders "-as the gefetlemen who are anxious to maintain the Establishment in Wales describe themselves-are still desirous of bringing about an electoral alliance with the Scottish Church- men. The latter remain shy and cautious. They do act at all relish the idea of making the Scottish Establishment dependent on the fate of the Welsh. It is, however, the fact that the English hierarchy are strongly in favour of making the attack on the Welsh Church a sub- ject of resentment by Scottish Churchmen, and are urging this policy with great persistence. The ultimate result is, therefore, doubtful.

One of the company playing! in the drama Old Sport" at the Victoria Theatre, Newport, named Richard Cowell, was found on Wednes- day night to have taken poison, but whether with a view to cause suicide, or by inadvertence is not quite clear. His part on the night in question was taken by Mr. Pryce Jenkins, who was years ago well known amongst Welsh foot- ballers.

Afraid of Becoming Black
Afraid of Becoming Black 0 SUPERSTITIOUS FEARS IN THE MIDDLE AGES. Thrilling Story of the Manner in which a Daring Captain Quelled a Mutiny. Some time in the year 1494 Vasoo de Garna, wiio had 6e1 out from Portugal on unkmwHi seas to discover a route to the Indies, found himself becalmed in the middle of the Atlantic. Standing alone on the deck of his ship he could hardly suppress a sigh as he looked to- wards the burning red horizon, at his vesaab which seemed deprived of all life and motion, and thought of his sailors lying everywhere about, inactive, discouraged, stupefied by tiw. intense heat. But, what is that ? Arising afar in the distance he sees an almost imperceptible cloud. —small as the puff of smoke which comes from the bowl of an Eastern naighileh—a very little thing, indeed, but enough to foretell the very near approach of the much-longed-for breeze. Though almost certain of the fact, V:18oo re- frained from communicating it even to his offices; he knew the demoralisation that would follow were he by any possibility to be de- ceived. And his prudence was all the greater as he had feh for some time past & breath or whisper as it were of discontent and mutiny in the air. One thing particularly surprised the great captain, thatwhile there was some excuse for irritability and impatence during this terrible calm, his men, on the contrary, seemed to have become quieter and better. Now, leaning against a. sail which partially oonoealed him, rihance gave him the key to much that was puzzling. A top-man. leaving one of his companions with whom he had been in conversation, said in rather a loud voice: — "I tell you that he would sacrifice us all to his ambition, and you are a parcel of cowards if you let him do it." The sailor passed on without seeing his captain, but not before De GaIna. had recog- nised in him Baltaaar, a man irreproachable in his conduct and work, though not generally liked. Vasco realised that he was on the brink of a terrible danger, so lie set at once to work to outwi this enemies. He determined, however not to do anything hastily. The day passed on without incident: but in the evening, just as the sun was sinking beneath the horizon to give pl&oe to night, after a short crepuscule, the long-expected breeze was felt coming across the sea gently a,nd smoothly as the breath from the dewy lips of a, young girl. A cry of joy came from the officers on board, but murmurs of uneasiness and discontent from the men. In another moment revolt would have broken forth in all it fury, but Yasco, who had kept an attentive eye on all, ordered. commands to be suspended for the present., and called his men about him. Standing with arms crossed, he surveyed the wild, ex- cited throng with a firm and fearless look, and in a sonorous and sympathetic voice said: "Sailors, my friends, my children, you who have followed me willingly, enthusiastically— you whom I sum leading to conquest, fame, and glory—why these signs of discontent- and insubordination ? What is it that makes you lose courage and hope? I ought, I know, to be severe, but my heart prevents me speaking to you otherwise than as a father .You are my helpers in a. work undertaken for the honour of our country. Speak—explain your grievanoes Believe me, I shall act. fairly and justly with you!" There was profound silence for a few moments. Sorne of the sailors lowered their heads half ashamed and repentant, others looked towards Baltazar in an eager question- ing way. Twisting his cap between his hands, this malcontent moved forward, and in some stammering words declared that his comrades were willing to obey their captain in all things if they remained in their present latitude, but that they absolutely refused, te cross the equator. "Ah the reason P" asked Vasco. All the men roared out the answer: — "We don't want to become niggers! We know that the moment we get to the equator we shall all turn black. Baok. Back! We must go back to Europe! Vasoo and his officers knew now they had to wrestle with credulity, ignorance, and blind brutality. So you believe that you will become negroes if you cross the equa.tor ? I also, 1 suppose P" "Dame! We oan't say that. You have probably some way of keepfng yourself white. While we To the astonishment of everyone. Vasoo replied —— "Baltiza,r has spoken truly. I do possess a secret that. will keep one from becoming even browned under the hottest sun. To- morrow I shall tell it to you. From now till then I command the most implicit obedience. Go back to your posts, obey your officers. I shall see you in 24 hours." After giving this order, Vasoo descended to his cabin, where he was soon joined by his second officer. "Now, said he to the latter, "use all available means to quicken the speed of the ship. Issue your commands fearlessly and firmly, and do not call on me until you osta no longer stand the insubordination of the crew." The Sam-Gabriel flew through the water 't like a bird. Even Vasoo seemed satisfied aft the progress made. On the other hand, the sailoms, who suspected that they were in the neighbourhood of the equator, began to be alarmed, as they- calculated as a very little time would bring them to it. Morning dawned and still no revolt. The officer in command struggled as best be oooM against the grumbling and mutinous erew. However, at about five o'clock the disorder be- came so great that it clearly became impassible to manage any longer. Vasco was acquainted with the state of affairs. "All right," said he. "Bring the ruw leaders to me. and let all those who wish to hear what I have to sav come with them." Every man ran towards the cabin. Come in. Baltazar. Let all of you oomt nearer! I promised to reveal the secret of remaining white while posing the equator. I run uroing to keep that TDromise. Look!" Witli a rapid movement he raised a pieat of carpet, and showed a hole cut in the flooring, through which one could see quite plainly the powder magazine of the vessel. Baltazar and those with him turned to- wards their ohief for an explanation of this strange sight. He was standing erect, looking like an angry god. He was armed with two pistols, which he pointed towards the terrible opening. You see. You understand! Liars and traitors! If one of you dare to disobey the slightest order I will blow the Sam-Gabriel into a. thousand atoms without one word of warning or explanation." A shriek of terror came from the crowd. Many. seized with fear, turned instinctively to fly. Others, with Baltazar as their leader,, thought to overwhelm their brave and noble chief. "Do not approach, or I fire!" said Vasoo tranquilly. An indescribable scene ensued. The sailors whose allegiance Vasco had won back by his daring attacked the mutineers, and all fought with the strength and courage of wild beaefes. The captain stood with his pistols pointed towards the fatal hole, watching the struggle. Five minutes—which seemed five centuries— passed before the officer who had charge of the log entered the cabin, aaid made the simple announcement, Seven knots and a half." Thp face of V 3",C0 cleared. He called out in a loud triumphant voice: — "My friends, we passed the equator three minutes ago." Baiitazar was hanged the same morning.—* (Jreorgeg Kegnel, in the "Sun."
