The Glamorgan Team.
The Glamorgan Team. A PECULIARLY PICKED THREE- QUARTER LINE. Some Further Opinions on the Welsh Team blat Will Meet England. Well Wisher" writes a long letter, in which he disagrees with my remarks of Tuesday. His principal contentions are (1) that Conway Rees is better than Fitzgerald (2) that M'Catcheon was not selected far the North on the ground that he is a Welsh international' and no man can play for two countries; (3) Frank Mills is not up to International form, and will be replaced by either Daniell, Pook, or Packer and (4) tha.t club ha.lves should not be separated, and. failing to select Parfitt and Phillips, the committee ought to select either the present Newport pair, the present Cardiff pair, or the present Neath pair. That is the gist of his letter, and certainly he scores once or twice. Take his charges seriatim. I disagree with his idea. that Conway Rees is a better man than Fitzgerald, who I fancy is the best left cootre in Wales at the present day, barring, of course, Gould. He shows perfect combination at the four three- quarter game, and, like Gould, is valuable by reason of his individual brilliancy, which by varying the style of attack, ma-kes the Welsh back game all the more dangerous. In his next item, however, he scores a decided hit, and in writing of M'Cutcheon's non-selection for the mp Northern team I ought to have remembered that the North v. South match is really a trial ginne to select the English fifteen by. In statement thres, however, I must again die-agree with him, for Mills, on Saturday's form, was one of the best forwards on the field, and few good judges said otherwise. His cen- cluding argument that a pair of club halves oue-ht to be selected will meet with general approval, but at the same time if two good men could be selected that were not belonging to the same club the want of harmony could be got over by the suggestion thrown out in my Monday's notes. "Fairplay," writing from Morriston, is a, bit too" toney" in his remarks, which arc simply an attack on a Cardiff player and a fellow pressmaii. There is no interesting point raised throughout the letter, so I am compelled to omit it. A somewhat novel but valuable suggestion for the protection of football grounds from frost reaches me from Cardiff. It is as follows Dear Sir,—Reading your notes on the above subject, has it ever occurred to the different clubs to make use of old newspapers for protect- ing the ground ? Paper is one of the best non- conductors they could possibly have, and lewt. of paper would go a good deal further than a ton of straw. Besides which they wouldn't make half the mess that straw doC.Yollrs, &c., ERNEST HEATH." With our minds intent on the International trial mateli we 'ha.ve accorded but sea-nt notice to the Glamorgan county team selected to meet Devon on December 20. The biggest mistake that the committee have made, and one in my humble opinion which will cost them dear, is to play Bancroft centre three-quarter. He is cap- tain of the Swansea team. and if he thought that he would be doing his club molt service by playing three-quarter he would do so.for heaven knows they are short enough. Instead of this, he takes his usual place at back. Now, our county team is in the- same position as Swansea they a,re short of class three-quarters. If the Cardiff team would only throw in their lot with the county, then the difficulty would be in talent than any other county. Hov/ever, it is idle t-> talk about what might have been. We are met with the difficulty that we ha.ve a scarcity of backs: and the committee in their wisdom take the cleverest full-back playing-one who has reduced saving the forwards to one of the exact sciences—-from his aeeustomed place to play centre throe-quarter. A more incon- gruous pair of centres than Bancroft and Thorogood it is not possible to conceive. I am not saying anything alxrat either man indivi- dually, but of this I itin firmly convinced they will not give an exposition of the Welsh system. I would mucli prefer eeeing Bancroft in his proper position, and either Davies, of Morris- ton, or Conway Rees, partnering Thorogood" Alexander and Coke will do, especially if the latter be well fed and openings made for him. He has pace, and with half a chance can score, but starved as he is at Swansea the only wonder is that he has not chucked it up altogvther as a bad job. Little fault can be found with the forwards, who, if not exactly class enough for an International, are of the able-bodied descrip- tion, with plenty of that" devil" in them that counts so much m county football. The Yankee game of football, as my readers will doubt,le-is have gleaned from previous notes on the subject which have appeared in this column, is purely and simply n game in which brute force and etrengtit are of more value than skill, and in which the object of each side is to do up" the other. The American journals are iust beginning to recognise this fact, and the World" takes thp lend pointing out the danger ele- ment, showing how cruel it is in its pve-ent form. It has often been an idea of mine to see a Wei ■ h team visit the RtAtes. hut the Americans' style of play just noVv is such that it would be impossible for us to visit them, simply because neither of us would understand or appreciate each other's game. To-night the .Tockev C. C. hold their annual dinner at Barry's, when between one and two Uundred members and friends are expected to sit down. It ought to be a very jolly evening. Indeed, the jockeys have pl?nty of good talent in their ranks. A correspondent drops me a line, re the Neath-Pontypridd match, which he says was splendidly contested and fast throughout. At the out-set the visitors seemed to lack that combination which characterised the Neath play, but in the initial stages of tlfe second hilf their exhibition was onnital. Time after time they engaged in bouts of clever pacing, Barnard. Green, and A. B. Evans being nearly always prominent. The partisans of the Rhondda. men were wrnth at the referee's decision following the try claimed by A. B. Evans. It was a fine performance, but G. D. Trick, the touch umpire, •said that the visitors' left win>r had. gone into touch, and the referee could do nothing under the circum- stances but disallow the try. I would ask cricketers to rememlier that the Glamorgan County 0. C. hold their general meeting at tlw Angel Hotel to- morrow night. The discussion is of such importance to the future well-being of the County C. C. that it behoves all interested in the summer game Ho be there. The reform in the payment of Association professionals is to come before a meeting of the League at Manchester next Friday night week. The seen da. so far as the scale of payment goes, is as follows :— 1. That no player in the employ of a. League club shall receive more than fI, maximum sum (- £ 740) for one year. It shal l be optional to any club to pay a player during the close season so long as such payments do not exceed 20s. per week. 2. That no club shall pay more than £ 10 bonus on engaging a player, and then only to nlayers not previously registered with the league. In the «went of ,th« transfer l-sing desired by the player and the club to which he belongs, the amount of such transfer be decided upon by the management committee. Th.' Welsh International team will not be 3(dc-c.ted for a week or so yet, and for the purpose of forming some idea as to how public opinion places the men I invite my readers to send in post cards giving their idea as to th0 personnel of the team that will )o selected bv the Union committee to represent Wales againsi Emrh'ml. Those post-cards diould reach me not later than Saturday morn- ing nest, and the sender of the post-card giving the most correct will receive a prize 3r one guinea. In the event of two or more no't-cards giving the team correctly, the money ivill be awarded to the first post-card to hand, [n the further event of none of the competitors taming the team correctly, the guinea ,11 je awarded to the. one which comes nearest. ] Post-cards must he addressed to "Welsh Ath- lete." "Western Mail," Cardiff. When the wize has been :1warded I "haD publish a ist giving the names of the players sent 1 n. on thp various -jvost-^ards nn. thr 1Him1)(T • yf votes that has been awarded to each. A WOMAN WARRIOR.
A WOMAN WARRIOR. She Has Spant Sixty-Eight Years in Barracks. A reporter of the "Evening Express" on Monday sought out Mrs. Snape, who resides with a few of her relatives at 41, Hirwain-street. Cathays.. He was taken into a little snug room 011 the ground floor at the rear of the house, and there found Mrs. Snayc busily plying her needle and thread. She is short and redun- dant. Her dark, almost swarthy, face looks mobile, expressive, and very intelligent. She manifested the utmost displeasure on being a,-ked for an interview. and, as may be imagined, was at first reluctant in giving any information. You must not mind my being rather abrupt," said the lady in an apologetic tone, "1 have only tins very day got downstairs after a bad attack of influenza." "Sorry, indeed, to hear that." our represen- tative rejoined, "hut I understand that you have lived the belter portion of your life in military (juay, tcrp?" "That is ,.0, Of 72 years I have spent almost 68 in l>arracl £ s." "Then your father was a soldier?" "Yes: my father was in the 4h,t, which is now the 1st W(,I,li Regiment. I wa.s bred and born in the 41st." "When and \vh;; were you bœ'JI?" "Now 72 years ago at Madras; was married first to Sergeant Cherion, of the 41st. when I was but sixteen years of age, and after- wards, in I860, to Sergeant Snape, who was also in the 4-lst." ROBBINS TO BE RELEASED. He Has Shown Exemplary Conduct While in Prison. We understand that Arthur John Robbins, who was convicted and sentenced to a term of five years' penal servitude, for extensive frauds on one of the Cardiff building societies, will be liberated from penal servitude in a fortnight, after serving about three years and ten months' imprisonment. Since his con- viction lie has by exemplary conduct obtained every possible privilege allowed by the prison authorities, and it is to this cause that the reduction of the actual term of the sentence is attributed.

Like a Living Torch.
Like a Living Torch. --+- A GIRL RUNS BLAZING ABOUT A SHOP, She is Frightfully Burned through Exploding Alcohol and may Die from Her Injuries. Up to a few days ago the prettiest girl in L. Shaw's hair-dressing parlours, in New York, was Margaret Lynch. She was tail and graceful, with golden hair and blue eyes. An accident, due to her own carelessness, blotted out her beauty in a moment, and left her life in the balance. Miss Lynch was the head of the cosmetic department in Shaw'. establishment. Her duties required her con- tinual presene* in the basement of the store, where the cosmetics are prepared. She superintended the work of nine other girls, who mixed and prepared the fluids sold i*5 the storeroom above. The work in the !):■ ■;> meut is of such a nature that seven stoves, all red hot, are required. The ingredient of the cosmetics are heated on the stoves before they are mixed one with another. Enveloped in Flames. Shortly before noon Miss Lynch took a teapot and placed it on one of the stoves preparatory to making tea for her lunch. As she was busying herself over the stove was called away by one of the other girls to look it. some alcohol that was about to IJ(} used in the preparation of a hair dye. Kh« was inspecting the alcohol when she thought of her tea. Fearing it might be spoiled i! left too long on the stove, she hurried to it5 holding the can of alcohol in her left hand. As she bent over the stove to move the tea- pot there was an explosion, and when t hi other girls recovered their senses Miss Lyrsrik was lying on the floor enveloped, in flamee. All Fled From Her. Among the girls in the basement was Mis^ Lynch's sister Nellie. When she sa.w her sister writhing in the fire she ran to her and tried to put out the flames. "Keep back! Keep back!" shrieked MiftIr Lynch. The girls fell* back and watched her as she rolled about the floor. Suddenly she stag- gered to her feet and ran out of the base- ment up the front stairs into the salesroom. Her light cotton dress was ablaze and flames hid her face and head and hands. The sales- woman and customers fled when they saw her. The girl ran to and fro from one end of the store to the other, crying for some one to help her. At last, exhausted, she fell to the floor. K. C. Ross, the coloured janitor of the building, caught up a heavy rug1 and threw it over her as she lay on the floor. The smothered flames gathered heat so that ithe girl threw off the rug and again began to j. run about the store. "Help me! Oh, somebody help me 1" 1 efe cried, rushing towards the front door Roasted Red. The orowd outside fell back. The girl stretched out her blazing hands to- open the door. Policeman Hogun opened the door and shoved her back in the store. Then he forced htr to the FotM tMiJ L iu the. .'l. Janitor Ross had used. He rolled her over until the flames were extinguished. As he unwrapped the rug for a surgeon to see the girl, the crowd that had gathered in the store turned away. The breast, arms, and hands of the girl were roasted red. Her face was scorched and her beauty marred. She could not see, and groped blindly to stay the sur- geon's hand as it touched her face. "Will I die?" she moaned. "Tell rneJ Will I die?" The crowd was silent. Why can't I see you?" she cried, as she licard, her sister's voice among those around her "Where are you?" What Caused It. At the hospital her wounds were dressed an( she became quiet. There is little hope of he; recovery. Her back, chest, neck, face, anc arms are badly burned. Her hair, which W81 her pride and the boast of her comj)anion« in the hairdressing establishment, was burned off. The explosion was due to some of the alcohol' from the can falling on the red-hot stove. As the drops of fire splashed about the room, the dresses of three of the other girls caught fira. The flames were extinguished before rthey gained any headway. Nellie ♦Lynch wa- burned about the hands and wrists a-s she tried to help her sister. Alice Daly was alst: slightly burned. Was a Very Careful Girl. Great care has always been taken in the preparation of the cosmetics in the vanou- hairdressing establishments in the city. Th, chemicals used, together with the manner o preparation, make the work exceptional; dangerous. This is the first accident of th kind that has happened, but several girls i the employ of the establishment say tho several times in the past Miss Lynch herse prevented such a catastrophe as befell h< the other day. The manager said that Mi Lynch had been placed in charge of the roo: becaue of her carefulness and trustworthinef If she recovers, her employer will see that sh: does not suffer.
