The International Team.
The International Team. HOW WiLL IT BE CONSTITU- TED P A Prize of One Guinea Wlil be Given to the Reader Sending in the Nearest Selection. Fortunately, trial matches do not come very often, or I should have to employ some assistance to deal with the mass of porrespon- dence that comes to hand from various en- thusiasts who wish to air their notions as to what players ought to get into the Welsh team, and what ought not. Some of my com- munications are couched in a gentle persuasive sort of way, others take a tone of firm remonstrance, and again occasionally one comes along full of bitter, biting sarcasm, taunting the committee with showing' favour instead of picking men on their merit. One of the latter kind has just gone the way of most epistles of this sort-into the W. P. B. I am sorry to disappoint any one of my corres- pondents, but there is reason in all things, and we must draw the line somewhere. How- ever, on the present occasion, the number of letters received on the one subject is so great that, not wishing to show favour to one more than another, I am compelled to drop them all gently into that self-same W. P. B. It must not, however, be thought that in doing this I wish t9 discourage correspon- dence amongst my readers on the subject, that is, when any subject of importance is brought to light. I am only asking that the letters shall be of general interest, and not merely airing a personal grievance, such as a-sking why this, that, and the othei third-rate player has not got his cap yet. Those of my corres- pondents, however, who send along post-cards and letters giving their ideas as to the com- position of the Welsh team I propose to deal with in another way. The team will not be selected for a week or so yet, and for the purpose of forming some idea as to how public opinion places the men I invite my readers to send in post cards giving their idea as to the personnel of the team that will be selected by the Union committee to represent "Wales against England. Those post-cards should reach me not later than Saturday morn- ing next, and the sender of the post-card giving the most correct list will receive a prize of one guinea. In the event of two or more post-cards giving the team correctly, the money will be awarded to the first post-card to hand. In the further event of none of the competitors naming the team correctly, the guinea will be awarded to the one which comes nearest. Post-cards must be addressed to "Welsh Ath- lete," Western Mail," Cardiff. When the prize has been awarded I shall publish alist pivingthe names of the plltyel's Rent in on the various postcards and the number of votes that has been awarded to each. This will form a valuable guide as to the public opinion on the merits of the various players before us. I see the Bard in the Athletic News goes plump for last year's International team, with the exception of Conway Roes and. Jim H;i,nnen, whom he replaces by Elliott, of Cardiff, and Daniell, of Llanelly. With the first-mentioned change I agree, proviiii ig, of course, thRt (lould i& selected to pla.y left centre. iti '-uiy case, however, I think we can go one better than the Oxford man, and if the Welsh Union insist on picking Gould for right centre, we have Fitz- gerald, who would, I imagine, be infinitely superior on the left to Conway Rees. Now, as regards Hannen. I know it has been urged that he is an old 'un. But that does not necessarily prove he is not still a good un. Personally, I believe him still to be one of the best forwards in the Principality. Certainly thero is no more honest a scrimmager nor cleverer a man in the pack than the old Newport war-horse. Why the idea should crop up at all that he is beyond his day is mere than I can understand, I have seen him play several times this year, and certainly I did not perceive the least falling off from his old time brilliancy. Certainly we want some young- blood in the team, but not at the expense of leaving out one of the best and cleverest for- wards playing at the present day. As to M'Cutcheon, if we take him en either I clnb or county form, his chances of being selected are extremely small. In previous years he bus always come in for a g'ood word from the Northern critics, but by general consent they seem to think much less of his play this year. He has not gained a place in the North team against the South, not even as a reserve, by which I take it that he has fallen off, although the Manchester Guardian generously excuses him by saying- M'Cutcheon would probably have found a place in the team if Welsh interests bad not been considered, and he will probably not be disappointed." Now, that is generous of the Northerners to consider our interests, and we. ought to feel grateful that they will so sacrifice themselves for the benefit or poor little Wales. They were not wont to be so self-saeirfioing, however, and remembering this, lam disposed to receive their favours with a considerable amount of caution. I may confess, however, that in the past two years M'Cutcheon has always beau a great fancy of mine, and I have several times been I alone iu advocating his claims to International honours. The way lie has been playing in the North, howøver, does not encourage me to again favour his chances. Moreover, under the circumstances of indifferent form which the Northern critics clearly suggest he is showing, I must contend that it was palpably his duty to come to Wales for the finel trial match, and give the committee a chance of judging how he is shapiug. It m*,y be that he is as clever as ever, but I strongly doprecat e the selection of players on past reputations, a,ud certainly the newspaper comments are not I encouraging as to his present form. Now, I suppose I must be in the fashiou and ¡ select a team, but in so doing there are certain reservations I m\ist make. One of these is, Where will Gould play, right or left. aud will the Union select players who have not been seen out in the trial matches P I will suppose that Gould will play left centre, whei-a, apparently, be is equally as clever as at right, centre, and that the committee wP' select players tha.t have ,'e! been s:e»n in the trial matches. In that case my i^am would be Back, W. J. Bancroft ;hro9-qnarter backs. T. W. Pearson. J. Klliotfcy A. J. Gould, en.l N. Bias's half backs, ParStfc and Sweet- Eseott forwards, Graham. Hannan. Watts. Buy. Mills. Hill'. Cope, and B. G. Edwards. Of course. 'J GouM psaya 1 right centre I should select Fitzgerald 10 partner him. The Hud-.W-dkdd Oinb ;ieeej-t;d the deci- sion of the iCoe'lir-h Union i is im?. but. are now having their own little innings bv con- stantly raising points for inquiry, which xnust take -Mr. Rowland Kill all his time to answer. Of course, the Fartown organisation directly a point crops up ask tho County Union for an explanation or definition. The Union, in its trim, refers the matter to the Eng- lish Rug-by Union, and so'the game goes merrily j oii. If Huddersfield cannot play football, they 1 at least mean to have a try at eortdani, W £ J.SH ATHLETE. I

EARL OF WARWICK.
_?_ EARL OF WARWICK. A Friend of the Prince of Wales and a Gentleman. The Morning Lender says The new Earl of Warwick—whom the world will, of course, still for a, while designate Lord Brooke—is in the very innermost circle of Society, and a promi- nent member of the set of which the Prince of Wales is the chief. He is a genial, gentlemanly man of 39, who deserves some more distinctive reputation than that of being the beautitul Lady Brooke's husband. He is quite an old Parlia- mentary hand, though he has not held a seat in the present House. He represented East Somerset from 1879 to 1885, and then he obtained a victory at Colchester. That was a victory, not for political principles, but for beauty. Lady Brooke herself canvassed the electors, and they were not able to withstand the witchery of her charms.

?BURGLARIES IN CARDIFF.
BURGLARIES IN CARDIFF. A Shop Broken Into in Custom-House Street. It appears that the gang of burglars prowl- ing about Cardiff just now is composed of several expert thieves, who plaai and carry out their nefarious work in a skilful and daring manner. In the "Evening Express "of Monday we reported a cate of housrbt e.tking at Roath, and about the same time at which the two swell mobsmen were at work there others of the clique paid a visit to the shop of Messrs. W. W. Ware and Co., curriers, 17, Custom House-street. The shop is on the ground floor, and the shopman lives at the top of the buildings. The place was securely fastened up on Saturday evening, and it was all right on Sunday till towards the evening, when the shopman thought he heard a noise, but did not come down to see the shop. The thieves, however, seem to have been disturbed, for, although they had successfully effected an entrance by the front door, they had not time to tamper with the safe or carry off any valuables. A policeman was soon on the scene, and at once informed the shopman that the front shop door was open. In the safe was a considerable sum of money, which was found all right. As a possible clue to how the burglaries at private houses are being woiked, it may be mentioned that at present a woman is visiting various parts of the town making inquiries of parties who have furnished lodgings to let. Her story is that her husband is a traveller, that he has come to stay for a week—although the story varies in some cases so far that the husband has favoured the place with a stay for some time—and that they would like to get good furnished lodgings in a respectable neighbourhood. These inquiries have been made by the same woman in different places in Riverside. Canton, and Roath, more often at night, but occasionally in the day time, and in each case where she succeeded in persuading her interlocutors she makes a minute inspec- tion of the rooms offered. In one case in I El don-road she agreed to take the rooms, but wished her "husband" to see them first. Need- less to say, neither she nor her husband have returned to take up their quarters there. All 1 this points to the fact that she is acting as "jackal" for her male companions, the object of the woman being to see what articles of i value there are on the premises which might be converted into "swag." The description of the woman given by those who have spoken to her is: —Small in stature and slender in build, with brown, or dark, hair, and sharp features. She almost always dresses in black, and wears a feather boa round her neck, and close-fitting hat and fall. An Attempt at Roath. Tower House, Fitzalan-place, Cardiff, was the scene of an unsuccessful attempt by burglars in the small hours of Monday morning. Professor Allaby, the phrenologist, was sitting up reading when he heard a noise at the dining- room window. He at once went into the room, and on pulling back the blind, caught 0, glimpse of a man near the window, and one disappearing' through the bushes. Before an alarm could be given the men bad cleared away. The catch of the window had been pushed back, and but for being' disturbed the burglars would have had another scoop. LETTER FROM MR. LANG MAID. THE EDITOR. Sir,—1 should like to correct the statement made in your paper of Monday's date regarding the burglary at 100, Newport-road. It says that on my informing the police two con- stables went to the house and found the "birds had flown." The real facts are as follow: I saw the two men enter the house, and by the light in the hall oould see them go up- stairs and close the front bedroom blinds. I at once came to the conclusion they must be burglars, aud went straight to tbe police- station. where I. could get only one man to leave. As soon as we entered the front garden station. where I could get only cne man to leave. As soon as we entered the front garden we saw one of the burglars in a stooping posi- tier) come downstairs and across the hall, when he fastened 1he door with the chain. I said to the constable, "Let us burst open the door," but he said, "No: we must not break into the house. I will go round to the back while you stay here." There was not a single per- son there at the time but the ixdieeman and myself. My little soft crossed the road to me, and 1. sent him to the station for more assis- tance, but by the time the other constable arrived the thieves had made their escape. I j feel certain that if the door had been burst open we could have captured them.—I am, j&o.. R. LANG-MAID, 157. Newport-road, Cardiff.

Wobble-Urns at Work,
Wobble-Urns at Work, THROUGH THEM YOU CHAT WITH THE DEAD. Mrs. Russell Davies Tells of Their Power and the Objects of Her "She is different, from an others, did you say ?!, "Yes. quite different. Extremely .ever, for one thing, whereas nearly all the others that I have come across were hopeless duffers -too ignorant to deceive anyone. Also. she is 'mignonne and dainty, charmingly dressed in a gown that rustles with invisible silk; and of so pleasing a colour that it is a res^ to the eyes to look at it. An Irish harp for a brooch; above, it a refined, delicate, and very intellectual face. That is the lady. Here is her portrait as a. frontispiece ta her new book, but it does her very scanty justice." "How iii the world did you come across her?" I saw the new book (says a writer in the "Westminster Gazette"), dipped into it, and found, here and there, such excellent common-sense passages that I wrote to the publishers for her address. If you have read your newspaper properly, you will have seen that it has been campaigning among London ghosts recently. Through mediums, spiritua- lists, and clairvoyants you enter upon such a campaign. Well. here was a clairvoyants and medium who has had more extraordinary experiences than anybody I have heard of, and who yet has some common-sense lei*. So I went to see her." And what was it like ?" "It was in a, tiny, pretty drawing-room. Nothing very extraordinary to be notied. ex- cept a kind of glorified camp-chair, with tài. inscription on a silver-plate:- PRESENTED TO THE WOBBME-UMS r-t WILLIAM T. STEAD, XMAS, 1892. Wobble-Ums' sounds Steadian. What- ever does the man mean? So he had been there before you?" "What the exact origin of the word ;s I can't tell you, but, no doubt, the wobbie- ums are spirits. Of course, Mr. Stead had been there before. Why, the place sunply swarms with spirits, Mrs. Russell DaviM says." "What did they look like?" MRS. RUSSELL DAVIES. "Why, you are behind the times! Yot and I and other ordinary people can't see the ghosts—the spirits, I mean—it is only the elect. I felt a little nervous when Mrs. Russell Davies said, as we sat before her drawing-room fire, 'The room is full of them. I see them all around, and hear their voices. "Did they have any message for you?"— "None whatever. I suggested that probably I was not. sympathetic enough, but Mrs. Davies said that wasn't it. You must get experience first, and then you can communicate with them or they with you." But where does Mrs. Davies's spiritualism differ from that. of other people?" "That is the very question I asked, and the answer was-I thought it a very noble, answer -that her object is to convince the worlr. that there is an after-life. She has proo: positive of this. People that have long beet, dead come back, through her, to their friends speak to them, comfort them, and help then to bear their losses. "Why, Anne Boleyn walked into the little drawing-room the other day, and made oom plaint to Mrs. Davies that Mr. Froude ha< wronged her in that book of his." And wasn't Mr. Froude informed of thi heartrending spectacle of the ghostly Ann Boleyn appearing to denounce him?" "Of course he was. And his aiiswer w; that if Anne Boleyn would come to him s his own room he would be willing—condescenc ing-enough to have an interview. I call cruel of Mr. Froude not to meet the Que, in Mrs. Russell Davies's drawing-room, whe: she loves to dwell, and where, sometime papers laid on a table flutter upwards to tl. ceiling and come back with Anne's ..w- graph written on them. "Oh, dear me, no; Mrs. Davies does nt give public seances. She is much too ne vous. Only in the privacy of her draWinr room, and to a few favoured friends, does sh ever reveal her wonderful power. I congra £ « lated her on the fact, and foolishly remarket that it was more easy to have faith in spiritu* listn if it was not a money-making affair. Whereupon, with exquisite tact, she told m( that, though she never gave public seanoes she did take a fee of a, guinea from those 0 her private sitters—is sitters the right worcU- who can afford to pay. For instance. Mrs. Davies, personally absolutely hates animals, and she knows uothir, whatever about horses and dogs. But one < her familiar spirits—Ned is his name- splendid as a judge of these creatures. I actually bought a magnificent bull terrier f Florence Marryat, in Ireland, through t medium of Mrs. Davies, who when posses- by Ned knows all the points of a good dog. '• A;izain. Ned foretdlSi unfailingly wi. horse, in a famous race, will win. He, Mrs. Davies, kuew that Isinglass would I run any more this year long before the lwr, owner had any idea of this disastrous fn And she has foretold the winner in many a many a race." "What is the lady's adiress P" Now, you're wicked. Her object in pra tising clairvoyance is, you must remembet to teach people that there is an after-life, an:, not to encourage them in lror«o-ra<unt. Although 1 must add, she kindly gave me t understand that if someone came to her in friendly way—-she didn't go further." _?-?-?-?--
