The ice carnival and bazaar at the Park-hall, Cardiff, under the auspices of the Llandaff Diocesan Church of England Temperance Society, was re-opened on Friday (the con- eluding day), by Mrs. Thompson, in the presence of a smaL number of visitors. ±te- ferring to the dual basis of the Church of England Temperance Society, she said no meeting connected with the C.E.T.S. was probably ever held in which mention was made either in approval or dislike of the dual basis. The C.E.T.S. held another basis, the parochial and diocesan. She believed the former basis was the more important. The parochial work was that done in towns and villages by more or less enthusiastic men and women, grappling hand to hand with the evils of intemperance, and striving by all means to lessen them, and to foster and create a high and healthy public oninion on the subject of temperance. To connect these small societies, and to secure more or less unanimity of action, a diocesan society was formed, to which the parochial organisations were affiliated. Mrs. Thompson then went on to show the need of funds for carrying on the work, but hoped the parochial or town furds would not suffer, or the shoeblack brigade, labour shelter, and prison shelter allowed to languish for want of support. They had all cheerfully given work, time, and money j to the cause of the diocesan society, and were encouraged by a certain measure of success. She trusted tha receipts would amount to a satisfactory figure. (Applause.) On the motion of the Rev. Compton Davies, seconded by Mr. F. W. Brett, a vote of thanks v.-as accorded Mrs. Thompson for opening the bazaar. The Rev. Canon Thompson responded on behalf of his wife. Referring to the cause for which the carnival was held, he said he could not forget that long before there was any diocesan organisation, or before tJjere was any thought of one, they were at work in the town of Card ill' in connection with the C.E.T.S., and the maintenance of the police court mission, shoeblack brigade, and so on showed the downright practical work which they were striving to carry on without the aid of any society whatever. He hoped there would be a great deal to show for the organisa- tion in other parts of the diocese than Car- diff, which lie looked upon as the centre of the diocese. He spoke in high terms of the work of Mr. Howe, the organising secretary, who had been indefatigable in his endeavours to make the carnival a success. (Applause.) LBY GWEN."J At the conclusion of the opening ceremonies of the ice carnival in the Park-hall on Friday several new amusements were added to those which were so thoroughly appreciated on the three preceding days. The marionettes again exhibited, and were followed by a decapitation show. Mrs. Kenway's pretty little pupils once more rendered their charming Carnival Dance. Mr. Cole and Mrs. Howe per- formed selections on the organ, and Mr. Ernest F. Andrews, Mr. Arthur Andrews, and Miss Jessie Morris cleverly performed "Box and Cox to a delighted assembly. During the afternoon, despite a heavy pressure of engage- ments, Lady Henry Somerset honoured the carnival with a visit, and, complimented Mr. Howe, the energetic secretary, upon the ex- tremely pretty get up" of the hall. Her ladyship also purchased articles from several of the stalls, and allowed herself to be photo- graphed standing in the archway of the Ice gr- Palace of Montreal, surrounded by the ladies of the B.W.T.A., who have so courteously performed the duties of refreshment stall- holders during the carnival. The stall- holders were also photographed in their national costumes. The business of the car- nival concluded with a Carnival Dance, which was held in the hall in front of the ice palaces, and the pretty lights from above being turned on the dancers from time to time had a very bewitching effect. Among the ladies who were not too tired to dance we observed Mrs. Buckley, attired in black- lace; Mrs. Howe and Mrs. Arthur, cos- tumed as Russian ladies; Miss Jessie Morris, fancy dress; Miss Morgan, Swiss peasant; the Misses Fowler, gipsy costume; Miss Edith Murphy, French peasant. Mrs. Hanson, evening dress; the Misses Walford Hanson, Swiss peasants; the Misses Lewis, Swiss peasants; Miss Jayne, Swiss peasant; the Misses Alexander, ladies of England; Miss Edwards, eau de nil shot rep—with silk to match-white cap and apron, with eau je nil ribbon; Miss Common, white cap and apron with pale blue ribbons; Miss Cuvillier, pink and blue shot gown, white mob cap and apron with pink ribbons; Mrs. Lipscombe, black satin and Honiton lace; the Misses Lipscombe and Miss Moore, Norwegian peasant costume; Miss Merrick, gown of art green muslin; the Misses M. J. L. and E. Woosey, Norwegian costume; Miss Sage, nursing costume; Miss Knill, Norwegian costume; and the Misses Kendrick, Norwegian costume. A great many ladies, friends of the stall-holders, attended the dance in the evening. Johnson and Roberts' band discoursed delightful music, and from the moment he first stood beside the bishop at the opening of the carnival to the last whirl of the carnival bal) the Rey. W. Lewis was busily employed putting forth every possible effort for the general success of the cause.

Master and Maid. SENSATIONAL CHARGE AT THE MANCHESTER COURT. Burnley Manufacturer Charged with Murdering an legitimate Child on the Evidence of his Servant. A sensational murder trial was opened on Friday at the Manchester Police-court. Ash-, worth Reed, a manufacturer, of Spruce Mill, Burnley, and Elizabeth Ann Remington, a domestic servant, were charged 'with the wilful murder of the infant child of the latter.—The body of the child was found in a black hole at Clough, Blackley, near Manchester, some time ago. On Thursday Inspector Caminada arrested the female prisoner, and from a statement she made to him he arrested Reed on Friday morn- ing on the Manchester Royal Exchange, where he was transacting business with other mer- chants. On being taken to the police-office and confronted with Remington, the latter made the: following statement:— I was in the service of Mr. Ashworth Reed, and he is the father of my illegitimate child. He told me to go to Man- chester, and I came from Burnley Station. He told me to take lodgings, -vhioh I did in Now- bridge-street, where I was confined, and he has supported me since. I met him at Victoria Station, and we walked up the ateps to Ducie Bridge, and then took the train to Cheetham-hill. We walked along the road to a wood at Blackley. Mr. Reed soaked a pocket handkerchief in water and gave it to me to put on the child's mouth. I put it on and took it off again. Then Mr. Reed put it on again. Soon after he said the child was dead. He then wrapped it up in a brown parcel, tied it, and left it there. I wrote to Mr. Reed and received the letter now produced. Mr. Reed told me it would never be found out that it was my child. He said it would disgrace him, and that he would never hold up his head in Burnley. I cannot tell the date. I left the house in July. He told me to write to him under the name of Richard Battersby, Spruce Mill, Burnley." When the inquest on the child was held, medical evidence showed that death was due to convulsions. A doctor now informed the court that the symptoms were similar in cases of death from convulsions and suffocation.—The prisoners were removed, bail being refused. Excitement at Burnley. The arrest of the Burnley manufacturer and waste dealer, Ashworth Reed, caused the greatest surprise in commercial circles at Burnley, where he was a well-known figure. He is married, has three children, and lives in some style in a good residential part of the town. He is about 50 years of age, and has been successful in busi- ness. His father is highly respected in the town. Nothing is known as to the antecedents of the servant girl, who is also charged with the murder.

Lewis Thomas, the young singer who has lately been heard so frequently in Covent Garden, at the promenade concerts as well as in a prominent part in Samson and Dalila," is, as his name denotes, of Welsh origin, though he was born near London just 30 years ago. He received his earlier education at the Dulwich Col- lege, and later on went to Germany, at the little town of Barmbeck, near Hamburg. He received his musical training entirely at the Royal Academy. Mr. Thomas took up his music somewhat later in life than usual, but is now a pupil of whom Mr. Fred Walker and Mr. William Shakespeare are justlv-proud. He was also a pupil of Mr. W. H. Cummings. Mr. Thomas is a typical Welshman. He has large blue eyes and genial manners he is, too, a lover, of flowers, and something more than a student of botany.

He attempted to jump off, but one of the trams passed over his leg, severely injuring it. He was at once conveyed home, and Dr. Jones amputated the limb. The unfortunate man, however, rapidly grew worse and succumbed the same afternoon. Deceased leaves a widow and one child. His wife was away at the time undergoing an opera- tion in a London hospital.
