NOTES. (By "OBSERVER") CARDIFF, TUESDAY MORNING. According to a high official in our midst the best safeguard against cholera is-oleanli- ness. I can fanoy many people experiencing a feeling of disappointment on learning this. Englishmen are said to dearly love a lord, and there is another thing on which they waste a tremendous deal of affection-medi- cine. Anything worth a guinea a box or two-and-ninepenoe the bottle, with maker's name blown in ta great saving by imbibing the larger sizes) is precious in our countrymen's eyes. Wherefore the mention of such a oomnson-place thing as cleanliness— unprotected by Government stamp or letters patent-is enough to dishearten your average reader, and this, too, at the latter end of the nineteenth century. Nevertheless, cleanli- ness is the best safeguard against cholera as against all manner of diseases—cleanliness in the person, in the house, and its surroundings. Don't trust to alcohol (another disheartening assertion) but boil your drinking water and your milk; don't spare water on your person or down the drains; and give our old friend Condy a chance. Passengers by tram, look to your tickets, else one of these days you may suffer the heavy financial deficit of one penny and run the un- pleasant risk of being put down aa sharpers as well. A Cardiff conductor has just been sent to gaol for fourteen days for dodging a passenger in this way; but those who use the cars are dearly to blame for not retaining their tioketa to their journey's end. Some years ago this particu- lar Davies happened to be in the composing- room of a Welsh newspaper, and bent over a stand, intent on reading soma matter in type on what printers call a "galley." Meanwhile the "oomp." in charge looking over the frame," saw what he thought was a P.D. idling, so brought a "side- itick" down with a tremendous whack on the shoulders of the reverend. One of the many noteworthy inoiaents of the terrible Park Slip disaster occurred at a prayer-meeting held by the entombed men whilst waiting for reseue or death. "One of us," said a survivor, was in the habit of denying the existence of a Deity, but on Friday night he besought the Almighty to hear his prayers, though they came in the eleventh hour." This is no isolated incident. I have never met an Atheist myself—[ don't believe there is one. In times of security and comfort, and again in times of distress, people say there is no God but when the dark shadow comes very near, they believe and tremble. The head may doubt, peradventure; not so the heart. We have on this staff a Cynic (cap. C., Mr Compositor, please.) Now I am naturally buoyant and light-hearted, except when I get the toothache, and this Cynic takes a delight in sitting on me and keeping me at my proper level as it were. The other night I had come in from hearing one of the great preachers who have visited us this week, and as I clearly like a good sermon (especially when l'm not bound to sit to the end of it), I was in specially good humour, and warbling something out of Sankey." M Doctors, or rather analysts, have been differing as to the quality of a Whitchurch publican's cwno. One said it was strongly impregnated with salt-f suppose to make the imbibers thirsty; the other analyst denied this in toto, and the case was dis- missed. Several dry looking fellowa about the corners here are grumbling that these matters are left to analysts at all. They are pre- pared, free of charge, to form a committee and test all the liqp-'T in Cardiff and the suburbs. Will the magistrates turn a deaf ear to such a disinterested appeal as this ? There is no love lost between busmen and tramcarmen in Cardiff. An enterprising busman has just been making it hot for a tram rival by bringing his vehicle smartly up at right angles to the on-coming car, j which an application of Euclid to the exigencies of civilisation shows must of necessity have resulted in injury to the said car. The Bench somehow did not see the ingenuity of the obstructor (who, by the way, is named Gallop) in the proper light, but fined him 10s. and costs: thus are attempts to introduce a little variety into our everyday life unappreciated by hard, cold justice. • Carmarthen will soon be up to its neck in humane medals. The other day a noble dog saved a child from drowning shortly after a man imitated the dog and now a woman has been travelling in the same good path. Shades of St. Peter, who says there's no heroism now-a-days ? • • Oh, young Wiltiam Hearn into durance is gone- He'll likely get better for being alone. A month is his term, and if anyone pines Under "ner rous depression," just drop a few line" To this same William Hearn, in her Majesty's choker," And secure a bright, cheerful, and amiable joker I If any of the strike leaders at Cardiff want the affair boomed, they have chosen a very unlucky time. Between collieries and cholera scarcely anyone knows or cares that there is a labour unpleasantness in progress. The poor long-suffering English language is about to endure another assault, this time in the form of a resolution just introduced in the American Congress, and which, if passed, will enforce the following pleasant changes in all the Government printing of the United States :—" 1. Drop UE at the end of words like dialogue. thus spell demagog, epilog, synagog, &c. 2. Drop final E in such words as definite, Thus spell opposit, preterit, bypocrit, requisit, &o. 3. Drop final IE in words like quartette. thus spell cigaret, roset, epulet, vedet, gazet, &O. 4. Drop final MK in words like programme, thus spell program, orifiam, gram, &c. 5. Change PH to F iu words like phantom. thus spell alfabet, paragraf, filosofy, fonetic, fotography, &o. C Substitute E for the diphthongs Æ CE when they have the sound of that letter. Thus spell eolian, esthetic, diarrhea, subpena, esofagus, atheneum, &c." The above, gentle reader, is no joke-I wish it were. I take it from one of the most sober periodicals published in America, which begins by remarking, English spelling is the worst in the world." Well, it soon will be if these improvements are effected.

LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. THEATRE ROYAL, CARDIFF. At the Theatre Royal this week the ever-popular drama. East Lynne." is being played by Mr. J. Pitt Hardicre's celebrated company from the Olympic Theatre, London. Probably no drama has succeeded in retaining its hold on the mind of the playgoer better than "East Lynne," for it appeals to the sympathetic feelings of all, and audiences appircntly never tire of it. Proof of this was forthcoming on Monday night, the theatre being almost, filled. Mr. John Ne-bitt takes the p .rt of Archibald Carlyle, Barbara Hare is portrayed by Miss Eimnelme Fussello, and MIMM Kate Read (Mis. fitt Hardacre) fulfils a double role as Lady Isabel and Madaane Vine. The company 19 atrong all round, and the drama is admirably produced in every res-pect. GRAND THEATRE, CARDIFF. "The Nationalist," a melodrama wlMch depicts the many phase" of Irish life—the pa-gsions,itid amotions of human nature, occupies tho Grand Theatre, and on Monday night it was witnessed by a largezaudience. The author of the piny, which is comparatively new, is Mr. J. W. Whit bread, whose productions are very fimiliar to Dublin playgoers, and in "The Nationalist." he has given a work which has won great approval. The company by which the drama is being played is Mr. Kennedy Miller's, Imd lias been specially formed by him for the representation of Irish drama. THE EMPIRE.. CARDIFF. Rarely has there been a larger or more enthu- Sladtlc attendaDce than that which assembled in the Cardiff Empire on Monday night, a considerable number being quite con- tent with standing accommodation. With the bill of fare which Mr. Stoll lias provided there should be a succession of such houses during the week. The ariistea each received an ovation. MirS Ada Reeve, a taking and favourite song- stress, were repeatedly encored. Miss Marie Le Blanc was also a bright particular star. The varied songs and dancta of Stanley and Lilian well upheld the credit of the artistes, a remark which equally applies to the Ottaways, who produce the sweetest music from bones. D. J. M'Carthv was a masterpiece of comic vocalism. Rosie Blond made a favourable impression as a serio- comic vocalist. R"ffin's trained monkeys demon- strated what careful training can produce. The trio of performers walked the tight rope a la Bloodin, and performed many wonderful feats.

THE CARDIFF BUILDING STRIKE. More Labour Imparled. Eighteen or nineteen walling masons, brick- layers, and plasterers arrived in Cardiff by the mail tills morning, and are now all employed upon various works in the town at the terms offered by tho Master Builders' Association. -h.

A LAD DROWNED AT THE EAST MOORS, On Monday afternoon a lad. named Robert William Pearson, four: eon years of age. residing with his parents at, 19, Meteor-strppt, Cardiff, fell into a pond of water at the East Moors and was drowned before nssistance could rendered him. The body was subsequently recovered and con- veyed home. An inquest wili be held to-morrow.

There were high jinks some months later, when the annual dinner was held at the Angel Hotel. Dr. Jones, the then mayor of Cardiff, was in the chair, and not less than 250 members and friends were present, and the proceedings were char- acterised by the utmost enthusiasm, and thus ended the Invincible year." The following season—that of 1886.7 -showed, but little deterioration in pllint of medt from the preceding one. Twenty-eight matches were played in all of which twenty were won, three drawn, and five lost; the scores standing 60 goals and 53 tries as against their opponents' 7 goals and 10 tries. Some good clubs were played this season, too, the list including, besides the local teams, Liver- pool, Runcorn, Swinton, Brighouse Rangers, and Wigan. But little change was observable in the playing members composing the first fifteen. Hancock, of course, was out, the quartette usually being W. M. Douglas, C, Arthur, A. H. Williams, and G. A. Young. Norman Biggs, I believe, also played in one or two matches. 1887-8 was G. A. Young's year of captaincy, bis vice being A. F. Hill. This season was only second to Hancock's year. Out of the 25 matches played nineteen were won, four drawn, and only two lost, these being with Llanelly and Gloucester. The score read-Cardiff, 48 goals and 41 tries, as against their opponents' six goals and six tries. Only a few new players were seen in the team this year, the most notable of which were H. M. Ingledew, D. W. Evans, and W. E. O. Williams. The record of '88-9 was 33 matches played, of which 24 were won, four drawn, and five lost, the score being 57 goals and 63 tries against their opponents twelve goals and fourteen tries. Burton, Halifax, Swindon, the United Hospitals, Gloucester, Oxford 'Varsity, London Welsh, Maories, Oldham, Yoik, and Bluckheath aie names that speak volumes as to the metal Cardiff were then composed to present such a record, and despite the losses, this was one of the very best, years that the club has ever experienced. They beat Oxford University by three goals and two tries to nil, and were, moreover, the only Welsh team that defeated the Maories. Norman Biggs and Rosser Evans were seen in the team this season, and both of them were playing in such rare form that they secured their international caps. The Maoris was the great match of this season, and as they had beaten out neighbours at Newport and Swansea it created an immense amount Of interest in the Welsh metropolis. The team representing Cardiff on this occasion was:—Back, Hugh Hughes; three-quarters, A. M. Hill, C. S. Arthur, F. N. Jones, and Norman Biggs; halves, Rosser Evans and Jarman; forwards, A.F. Hill, A. F. Bland, Q. D. Keuzl e, D. W. Evans, R. T. Duncan, W. T. Morgan, J. Mahoney, and S. Nicholls. Although the Maories were not over bashful in proclaiming that they were sure to win, they pud Liue respect to the lour three-quarter system, anjj put out a man from the serum to assist their trio in coping with the Cardiff quartette. Biggs and Arthur, it will be remembered, did some wonderfully smart work just after the game commenced, and the latter giving N jrman a pass, snabled Biggs after a magnificent spriut to score in a somewhat difficult angle. Sid Nicholls waa mainly instrumental in scoring ;he second point just before halt-time. He dubbled ;he ball splendidly through the visitors, and kick- ng it over the line Blaud and Morgan fell together on the b'lll and scored the try, Hughes iuccessfully taking the place kick. One incident connected with that match afforded inbouuded amusement to the reporters present. A gentleman travelling with the visiting team was accommodated with a seat adjoining that )ccupied by the members of the fourth estate, and probably never before nor since has such an Mithusiastic votary of any team been seen on the ground. During the different stages of the game his face was worth going a long way to sep. It was a veritable football kaleidoscope, or perhaps it might better be termed a football weather glass. No need to look at the game, it was depicted plainly enough on this gentleman's features. Were the Maoris pressing or having a bit of the best of it his face would absolutely beam, and he seemed to expand into a grin, but, on the other hand, were Cardiff holding an advantage a look of awful gloom, anxiety, and Jespondency would come over his face and he would shrink and shrivel up into a mere dwarf. Never before nor since should I think a football enthusiast has been seen like unto him. 1889-90 saw the commencement of the downhill movement that has, unfortunately, characterised the Cardiff team of late. Out of the 36 matches played 26 were won, seven lost, and tliree drawn; 46 goals and 51 tries were scored, against 14 goals and 14 tries. Most of the teams previously mentioned were on the fixture list, the new ones being New Brighton, Old Merchant Taylors, Cornwall County, and Leicester. Out of the 33 matches played in the following season (1890-91) 22 were won, nine lost, and two drawn, 40 goals and 42 tries being scored as against their opponents' eighteen goals and seven- teen tries. Blackheath, Oxford University, Swinton, Barbarians, and Leeds were amongst the clubs played. Season 1891-2 saw Cardiff reach what is to be hoped their lowest ebb. Thirty matches were played, thirteen of which were won, fourteen iost, and four drawn, the score reuding-Cat-diff, 16 goals and 31 tries against their opponents' 25 goals and 31 tries. A great many arguments might be adduced to show why the season proved so disastrous. The players were at sixes and sevens. New blood was being constantly introduced, and no opportunity was given the team to form nny sort of combination, changes taking pluca in the com- position of the team in practically every match. The present seasou. too, does not at tho present moment present an inviting aspect. Only one or two experienced players will be left in the team, which will mainly be composed of young and raw material; and before any results can be hoped for they will have to be licked into shape. Still, I have hopes for the future, and, providing the team are allowed to keep together and are given time to understand each other and form some sort of combination, the outlook is not so black itS many would havs us imagine. FIVE HUSBANDS" ALIVE And Claim the Body of a Wifa. Yesterday Dr. Danford Thomas held an inquest at the Clerkenwell Coroner's Court relative to the death of Harriet Thrower, 47, a married woman, lately living at 22, Brunswick-place, Clerkenwell. Before the inquest five men presented themselves at different intervals at the mortuary and claimed to be "the husband" of the deceased woman. They persisted that they had passed through the legal forms of marriage with her, and had a right to see the body- However, Mra. Bismire, the mor- tuary keeper, refused to lot either of them see her, and referred them to the coroner. In the interval the mother of deceased came to the mortuary, and finding the state of affairs refused to see the body or give her name or address. The first witness was William Barnard, a market porter, who stated that he had cohabited with deceased for some time. She was the wife of a clerk connected with a Con- tinental company, but it was not known if he was now alive. Deceased had an affection of the heart. During the afternoon of Wednesday he heard that she was ill, and at night he came home and found her dead in bod.—Dr. Kedman, who made a post- mortem examination, found that death had occurred from effusion and rupture of a blood- vessel on the brain.—The jury returned a verdict of Death from natural causes."

SINGULAR DEATH OF A LADY. Mrs. Troode, wife of Colonel Troode, of Matford, Exeter, and Woodlev, Dulverton, died suddenly on Saturday morning under singular circumstances. She was walking with another lady to the meet of the Dulverton foxhounds for cub hunting at Marsh Bridge, and when ascending Mitrah-litil a wasp settled on her hair and became entangled in it. Its efforts to free itself so startled Mrs. Troode that she fainted. She recovered consciousness, however, almost immediately, and exclaimed to her companion, "I am dying," asked for restora- tives, and then sank back, apparently dead. Efforts were made to restore auimntion, and medical aid was sent for. Mr. R. J. Collyns, sur- geon, Dulverton, after an examination of the body, pronounced life to be extinct, the cause of death being severe shock to the nervous system followed by syncope.

FEVER IN LONDON. No fewer than 75 patients suffering from fever were removed from their homes to the hospitals of the Metropolitan Asvlums Board during yesterday up to oight o'clock lust; night, and with sixteen admissions on Sunday, 54 on Saturday, and 62 on Friday, the total number of patients under treat- ment has again reached a quite unprecedented figure in the history of the board. The returns prepared by the officials of the Metropolitan Asylums Board showed that, despite a very large number of discharges of cured patients, there were 3,442 patients under treatment. All the hospitals in London are full of acute cases.

SINGULAR RECOVERY. A singular case of recovery of a deaf and dumb person was mentioned at the recent meeting of the Kendal Union Rural Sanitary Authority. A girl living at Preston Richard was sent, at the beginning of this year, to a deaf and dumb school in Liverpool, and in May she was taken ill with scarlet fever and placed in a hospital. After her apparent recovery she visited hor home, when she again became ill of scarlet fever, and is now in the Kendal sanitorium. Since her illness in Liver- pool, however, she has perfectly recovered her hearing, and is beginning to talk. She is eleven years of age, and had been deaf and dumb from six months old.

GREAT CHESS MATCH AT NEWCASTLE. The match between Bird and Lister commenced yesterday at the Newcastle-on-Tyne Chess Club. The conditions are the first five won games, draws not counting, stakes £ 50, and the time limit twenty moves an hour. Lasker won the toss for first move, and opened with the Ruy Lopez, which Bird defended in an original and enterprising manner. Lasker compelled his opponent's resignation on the 64th move. The game was especially interesting, inasmuch as Mr. Bird adopted his own line of defence, knight to Queen's fifth at the third move, which is generally condemned by theorists, and although he lo3t the game this was no impeach- ment of the defence, as after the opening Bird had quite an even game, with some attack.

Buying a Moustache. It is not always wise to give utterance to one's pious aspirai ions, even when they relate to the hirsute adornments for which the vanity of the genus homo is known to crave. At Esaen a few weeks ago two young men were seated outside a caf6. One was rosy and beardless, the other tauiied and moustachioed like the heavy villain of transpon- tine drama. Said the rosy and beardless one, in a moment of guileless desire, I would give fifty marks for your moustache!" The other, with dramatic promptitude, snipped off the envied adornment, and, laying the hairs on the table, demanded the fifty marks. The youth protested that his offer was a joke, and refused to abide by it, whereupon his companion issued a writ against him to compel a fulfilment of the contract. The action came on for trial the other day, and resulted in a verdict for the plaintiff. The beardless defendant is all the more mortified because, in the meantime, his friend has grown another fine moustache-

Gad's Hill. The present owner of Gad's Hill has been offered more than twice the sum he paid for Dickens's favourite home by the managers of the great World's Fair, who were anxious to cart it bodily to Chicago, there to re-erect, it in the Exhibition grounds. The present proprietor, a retired Indian judge, has declined the munificent offer of the enterprising Yankees.

Doll Making. It takes 80 men to make a German doll. Each man makes a small portion of a doll, but it is the same little bit all tho time, and 1,000 dozen dolls can be made in a day in some of the big factories. After the men finish the bodily portion of the doll the women's work begins. They paint faces, put on wigs, dress the dolls, and pack them for market.

A Rambling Holiday. Tbd Duko of Norfolk, the Earl aud Countess of Loudoun, and the Ladies Mary and Margaret Howard are engaged in making a riding tour through Staffordshire, Shropshire, and Wales. Two of the ladies ride in a mail phteton drawn by a handsome pair of horses, and the gentlemen and one of the ladies are mounted on horscback.

A Royal Shot. An in fcmwn, the German Emperor is a keen sportsman and as excellent shot. Thursday, says a Kerlin correspondent, lie took an active part in the target practice at the shooting school near lluheleben, and is said to have scored the greatest number of bulls'-eyes.

TONDU EXPLOSION. LATEST PARTICULARS. RELIEF OF THE SUFFERERS. -f Thousands of visitors from all parts flocked to the scene of the Tondu disaster on Sunday, and in the evening many were unable to get away by reason of want of facilities, and they per- force had to spend the night as best they could— some on doorsteps, or wherever they could find shelter. Monday morning broke threaten- ingly, and soon the rain descended in torrents. Up to 10.30 there were not a score of people around the drift. All hope bad been abandoned. There was no chance of any bodies being brought up. This kept away the relatives, who sorrowed in their stricken homes, while a drenching down- pour kept away the morbid sightseer. MR. FORSTER BROWN. 1 CONDITION OF THE INJURED. Dr. Jones on Monday afternoon said the five of the sufferers who had suffered most from the effects of the aftor-damp-Ttiotuas Tiiomas (Bankers) and his two sons-were reported as dolog very weN. the elder Thomas being able to sit in front of the fire and enjoy his milk. Phillips, of Bryncetiiio, was also progressing most satisfac- torily. All may now be said to be out of danger if they take care of themselves. MR. J. W. J Mr. Robson, her Majesty's inspector of mines for the district, who was below again on Monday, considers the work is proceeding even better than I could be expected. Exceptional difficulties had been encountered. but immense energy bad been displayed by the explorers. There were very heavy falls of roof, and in the main slant gas is accumulating. This, of course, must be, for there is nothing to clear away the accumulation of gas given off from the coal in the inner workings. Thus, the explorers in a double sense hold their lives in their hands, while the road they arc making is more of the shape of a switchback than anything else. MR. JOHN THOMAS, MINERS' AGENT. I THEORIES OF THE EXPLOSION. Competent authorities think the explosion occurred either in No. 4 or No. 7. and it is thought there must have been a double explosion, men having been blown from east to west, and lobo from west to east. The displacement of the timbers also seems to point to the same thing. AN EXPERIENCE IN THE WORKINGS A striking and, to him, doubtless, memorable experience befel the Rev. James Jones, chaplain to the Glamorganshire Asylum, in the pursuit of his sacred calling. On Saturday it became known that eight men were alive in the workings, but in such severe straits were some of them that the rov. gentleman named was asked by Drs. Jones and Thomas if he would go down to them, as pro- bably his presence might be useful. The men were at No. 7 Stage, and Mr, Jones immediately resolved to make the descent. The three started together, and proceeded alone as far as the Park Heading near No. L From here sjrne of I MR. EVAN THOMAS, OF BRYNCETH1N. the rescuers acted as guides. Three bodies were passed in the main slope, one of them being that of William Hopkins, a lad, whose widowed mother was mouirning her loss at Aberkenfig. The little fellow was lying stretched on his back, his right hand showing signs of having been slightly smashed. The party then proceeded as far as No. 4 Stage, passing three more bodies on trams, whete they had beeu pluced by the explorers. Further again they went, to find the smeUs almost overpower them and prevent them going any further for the present. Thinking the widowed woman at Aberkenfig would Hke to have the body of her son, the party asked some of the rescuers to help MR. JENKIN JONES, MAESTEG, them bring up the body. This they readily acceded to. An ambulance stretcher was sent for, but it would not pass through the narrow opening which had been made in the debris. To pass through this hole was a work of great difficulty- a difficulty and danger to which the explorers saein to be too accustomed to take cognisance, j But to those to whom familiarity had not bred the proverbial contempt the danger was apparent. Tons upon tons of rock had been splintered by the force of the explosion, and above were huge masses of stone which the slightest concussion would bring down. Of the three gentlemen oamed, two-Mr. Jones and Dr. Thomas—had lost their lamps; to pass through the hole it was necessary for those who passea through to crawl upon their hands and knees, or rather erovel nearly flat, and so work them- selves along. Dr. Jones went in front with the light through this hole in the debns. Then in total darkness, for the body of the doctor obscured MR. DAWSON. (From a photograph by Mr. D. Gradually, therefore, Mr. Jones had to work himself by degrees from his perilous posit ion and on his return to bank frankly confessed that he had nearly lost his head. And no wonder, for he was well-nigh exhausted. The incident shows how perilous is the work of the explorer. A somewhat similar experience befell Dr. Edward Thomas on Friday. He was taking a "jack "of beef tea to the reecuers, and out of one of these narrow passages he had literally to be pulled by Morgan Thomas, who hauled him back by th4 legs. When he got aa far as No. 4 he was strongly advised not to go further because of the foul air. It was on his way there that he got so unpleasantly fixed. A FORTUNATE CIRCUMSTANCE. It was a fortunate circumstance that the 014 fan remained in its place and had not beet removed when the new fan-house was erecte* recently. The old fan-house was nearer tilt mouth of the return, caught the full force of tin blnst, and was wrecked. Had it not been the new fan must have suffered severe injury, in which, event no life could have been saved, because all ventilation would have been stopped. HOW THE TWO FIRST MEN ESCAPED- It seemed a great cause of surprise that the two men who first escaped and who came out directly after the explosion were not injured by the force of the terrific blast which did such havoc both inside I DR. JONES. and outside the workings. It was explained to a Western Mail representative by one of the engineers who have done good service during the 'ast two or three days that they were working in tho return, the explosion travelling against the current of fresh air. THE COFFINS. As is customary at similar disasters in South Wales, the company owning the mine are supply, ing the coffins. These are being made at the Tondu workshop, where the carpenters are busy night and day in anticipation of the bodies being brought up. DR. EDMUND THOMAS. A THRIFTY POPULATION.
