PAWNING A PAIR OF TROUSERS FOR MEDICINE. JAMES FBASSIS THOMAS lives in Pontnewynyid, near roQtypool, Menmoatiuhire. Me is new twenty-three years of age, living with his mother, a widow. Soma eleven yearn ago, thea a mere boy, he went to werk in the coalpit as a miner, in order to assist liis mother ia rearing her family of little siuldrau, Seon, owereiV the little tehow broke down in health; but the neces- sities ot the family seemed to require it, and he continued to toil in the mines, suffering all the time from the effects of indigestion, an agonising symptom being asthma, in such a troublesomeferm that the boy was unable to lie in bed. Working through the day, and resting as bestheoould in an arm-chair durin, the night, naturally undermined his constitution. Year by year his health grew averse and worse, until at last rheumatism came with all its dreadful agony. One joint after, anotlier became swollen and inflamed, so that he was obliged to stop work. In this sax plight the now young man was confiued to the house tor two long years, suffering all that mortal could eadnre. One physician aftei another was called upon to treat his complaint, but with no benefit, for- the poor fellow continued to grow worse and worse. Hoping to find some means, of relief, a consultation of doctors was held, when it was decided that an organic disease of the heart existed in an incurable form, and that medital aid could not afford relief. lie was given up to die. These years of expensive medical treatment had exhausted the little savings of the mother, and they had no money to buy even the necessari s of life But a toud mother never giyes up in despair. There was one spark of hope left. Someone had told her of a remedy that had cured so many cases-even when: as hopeless as this one seamed to be-and the -in jt)atrlo love went out for her d.ar boy. But how to get the medicine was the question. Their money was entirely gone.
