In ancient Wales rivers become gods, and were worshipped by the people. In modern Wales some rivers are turned into saints, and have churches dedicated to them. An illustra- tion is found in the name Llanbradach." There never has been a saint called Bradach. It is simply the name of a small tributary of the Rhymney. Years ago there stood a solitary homestead there called Glan Bradach, anglice Bradachside. Glan in composition changes into Lan," and some wise man believed that the latter was the same word as Llan," which from that moment was attached to the name of the river, converting it, of course, into a saint.
