GREAT FORWARD MOVE. A meeting of the Welsh National Executive, which consists of representatives of the Welsh local education authorities, was held at Llan- drindod last week. The conference was private, but enough is known of what was done there to show that the movement, if it has been more silent of late, is not less vigorous. The Committee conferred with representa- tives of the Mountain Ash authority in view of the action of the Board of Education under the Default Act. With reference to the Roman Catholic school, a complete understanding was arrived at as to the course to be adopted, the Mountain Ash delegates entirely concurring with the recommendations of the Committee. The situation in Merioneth was carefully considered. Mr. Lloyd-George presented the report of a sub-committee, which had had several con- ferences with the leaders in that county. The sub-committee had unanimously concurred in the proposals of the county leaders, and these were now endorsed by the Executive. It was, however, resolved, in view of the enormous importance now attached to the situation, that the details of the further action it has now been decided to take in Merionethshire should not be disclosed. It was, however, authorita- tively stated that the measures about to be adopted will fully maintain the essential prin- ciples for which Wales has been fighting, and will, it is believed, place the Government in the position of having to promote further legis- lation if the present policy of the Board of Education is to be made effective. The situation in Montgomeryshire was also fully entered into. Here the situation, both in its financial aspect and in relation to the relative proportions of provided and non-provided schools, differs essentially from that presented by Merionethshire. The plan of campaign now suggested by the Executive for adoption in the county met with the hearty assent of the county delegates, and will be put in operation at an early date. It is said to be of an altogether different character from that about to be pur- sued in Merionethshire, and is authoritatively declared to be of such a nature as will force the fighting and give the whole kingdom an early object-lesson as to the intensity of the national feeling behind the movement." The plan of campaign will be in accord with the essential lines of the Cardiff resolutions.

Y PROFFESWR O. M. EDWARDS AR WRTHSAFIAD CYMRU. Mewn araeth a draddodwyd ychydig ddyddiau yn ol ym Meirionydd ar Wrthsafiad Cymru," gwnaeth yr Athro O. M. Edwards, golygydd Cymru, sylwadau tarawiadol. Os gwneir rhywbeth yn erbyn dau beth neillduol," meddai, le geir dynion yn barod i ymladd trostynt- sef dros blant ac arian." Ni ddaeth ef erioed ar draws neb a ymddirywiasai gymaint fel nad oedd yn ewyllysgar i ymladd dros ei blant, na neb yn rhy dda i beidio ymladd am arian. Yr oedd ef a'i gyfeillion wedi dod yno i wrthdystio yn erbyn yr anghyfiawnder a wneir a'u plant a'u harian. Dichon nad oeddynt wedi dioddef cymaint a rhai ardaloedd oddiwrth y gormes, ond yr oeddynt baroted a neb i wrthsefyll. Mae y Ddeddf Addysg yn anghyfiawn i'n plant. Bu Cymru ar y blaen am godi athrawon da. Syndod yw fod cymaint o Gymry yn athrawon yn Llundain, a chredai efe mai y rheswm am hynny ydoedd fod cydymdeimlad y Cymro yn burach nag eiddo y Sais. Er cymaint o rin- weddau a fedd, 'does ganddo yr un galon mor lawn o gydymdeimlad ag a fedd y Cymro. Ni wneir byth athraw da o neb os na all gydym- deimlo. Gellwch gael dyn gonest, cydwybodol, diwyd, yn cyflawni ei holl ddyledswyddau i'r dim, ond o werth dim os na bydd yn hoff o blant. Ac y mae'r Cymro ar y blaen yn hyn o beth, fel rheol. Anfynych y ceir ardal i fynu a'r Bala a'i hamgylchoedd sydd wedi codi cym- aint o athrawon da, a gwelir hwy o gwmpas Cymru i gyd. Ond dyma ydyw eu cwyn dan y ddeddf hon Mae yn anhawddach i Ymneill- duwr fyned yn athraw nag ydyw i Eglwyswr. Wedi i fachgen o Ymneillduwr basio i fyned i mewn i goleg, rhaid iddo chwilio am goleg y ca'i dderbyniad iddo. Ond am Eglwyswr neu Babydd, mae pob coleg yn agored i hwnnw. Ac eto, mae y colegau hynny i gyd yn cael eu cadw gan arian y wlad. Fedrwn ni ddim myned ym mlaen a'n gwaith o fradychu ein hegwydd- orion heb wadu y grefydd yr ydym yn meddwl cael bywyd trwyddi, a'r grefydd y mae ein bechgyn a'n genethod yn cael eu dysgu ynddi. Mae athrawon gwael yn cael eu rhoddi i'r wlad oherwydd eu bod yn medru cael myned i'r colegau, ac athrawon da yn methu myned iddynt am eu bod yn Ymneillduwyr. Ac arian y wlad sy'n eu cadw. Nid teg hyn. Oes rhywbeth gwell nag athraw da? 'Does dim byd salach, beth bynag, nag athraw sal. Mae doctor sal yn beth mawr i bohl fentro eu bywyd i'w ddwylaw Mae gweinidog sal, na fedr fod yn ddigon dewr i ddweyd y gwir, na digon tyner i fod mewn llawn cydymdeimlad a'r rhai o'i gwmpas, yn beth i fawr ofidio o'i herwydd. Ond 'does dim byd salach nag athraw sal, hunanol. Hen drefn personiaid ac ysweiniaid oedd penodi athrawon haner moesol, wedi bradychu egwyddorion a chrefydd. Nid oes fendith mwy nag athraw caredig yn caru plant: mae ei ddylanwad ar yr ardal am genedlaethau. Ond pwy sydd i gael dewis yr athrawon hyn ? Myn personiaid ddweyd mai nhw ddylai gael gwneyd. Tybed nad y chwi ddylai ? Chwi sydd i dalu, a chwi ddylai gael eu rheoli hefyd. Edrychwch ar bwnc yr arian hefyd. Fe geisiodd y wlad hon roi trethi ar yr Americamaid, ac fe gollodd Prydain fwy yn yr ymgais. Mae'r frwydr yn mynd ymlaen yn odidog yn Lloegr-gwahanol adranau Ymneillduaethyn uno, y Bedyddwyr ar y blaen, y Methodistiaid a'r Anmbynwyr yn dilyn, y Wesleyaid wedyn, ac ugeiniau a channoedd o Eglwyswyr sy'n cashau y ddeddf. Beth wnawn ni ? Ymladd dros egwyddorion. Dri chan' mlynedd yn ol, ein galw at y stanc wnaethid i sefyll dros yr un egwyddorion ag y brwydrir drostynt heddyw. Yr un ydyw rhyddid cref- yddol a rhyddid mewn gwlad. 'Does dim eisiau gofyn hynny heddyw. Ond cofiwch mai dros yr un egwyddorion a'r bobl aeth at y stanc y pryd hwnnw yr ydym ni yn sefyll yma heno. Ychydig ar ol hynny, dyna fuasid yn wneyd—- dioddef cael eich troi o'ch ffermydd. Dros yr un egwyddor y rhoddodd ffermwyr eu bywyd i lawr, y gadawsant y cartrefi ag yr oeddynt wedi eu maethu a'u hamser a'u harian i'w gwneyd yn gysurus, yr aethant i dlodi mawr, y gadawsant y fferm a'r plant ar hanner eu magu. Ond ni ofynir i chwi fyned at y stanc i drengu, ond yn unig i gyfranu fel y medrwch i'r drysorfa. Haerir ein bod yn tori'r gyfraith. Na, y ddeddf sydd yn myned ar draws ein hegwyddorion, ac yr yd)m ninau am lynu wrthynt trwy bobpeth.

The Revolt. ANOTHER "EMERGENCY" SCHOOL. Widespread inquiries throughout Merioneth- shire, writes a correspondent, show that the "revolt" policy against the Education Act has penetrated all the outlying and isolated villages of the county. The unbounded success attend- ing the recent opening of a number of emer- gency" schools has impelled the Merioneth Education Committee to select the populous district of Carrog, two miles from Corwen, for the next battleground for a revolt" school. A visit there revealed the fact that the village, whilst being practically Nonconformist in religion, was actually devoid of a Council school, despite the fact that Nonconformist children outnumber those associated with the Established Church by three to one. At the Church school about go scholars are now in attendance, of which over 60 are the children of stalwart Nonconformists. Councillor Foulkes Jones, Corwen, a leading member of the Merioneth Education Committee, stated that arrangements had been completed for educating the children of Nonconformists at Carrog devoid of sectarian teaching, and on Monday next, another emergency school will be opened under entirely novel conditions. The chapel children, withdrawn from the Church school, will migrate to the Calvinistic Metho- dist Chapel vestry, where there will be accom- modation for sixty scholars, in classes ranging from Standard I to VI. The infants will be taught in the Baptist Chapel vestry. Mr. Foulkes Jones stated that 64 scholars have promised to transfer to the emergency school, leaving only about 30 at the Church school. He added that the Merioneth Revolt Fund was swelling daily, subscriptions being received in large amounts from all parts of the Principality and England. The English Non- conformists had liberally subscribed, and, as an instance, a new chapel, recently opened in Liverpool, had sent £80. It was expected that a large school would be built shortly at Carrog to combine infants and the other scholars, and very soon revolt" schools would exist in every village and town in Merioneth. The best possible talent was being installed for teaching at Carrog, and the Committee had been fortunate in securing the services of Mr. Wm. Owen Edwards, of Blaenau Festiniog, as headmaster, and he would be assisted by Mr. Elias Jones, Llangerniew, the son of Professor Henry Jones, of Glasgow and Bangor. CHECKMATING A CHURCH MOVE. An instructive incident in the Welsh educa- tion war has just occurred at Pwllheli. Here there is a strong Church school, as well as an equally successful Council school. Some mem- bers of the Church party, on the reopening of the schools after the summer holidays, tried to induce Church parents to remove their children from the Council to the Church school, and succeeded in detaching five pupils. The chal- lenge was promptly accepted by the Free Church Council, which at Pwllheli happens to be vigorous and active. It was found that out of 230 pupils in average attendance at the Church school 130 were the children of Non- conformist parents. A complete register of these was prepared, and the authorities of each Nonconformist chapel furnished with a list of children of parents attending there who were pupils of the Church school. As the result of a systematic canvas of these parents at least 100 children will now be withdrawn from the Church school and transferred to the Council school. As the Church school has three depart- ments-boys, girls, and infants-each with its own head teacher, and as with the reduced attendance the average in each department will fall to 40 or 50, it may become the duty of the Education Committee to reduce the school staff, and possibly make th'e three departments into one mixed school.
