A remarkable figure arrived in Rhos during the small hours of Saturday morning last week, when the inhabitants were disturbed by his continuous shouting through the streets. Making a halt after a few paces, bareheaded, and with uplifted hand, he exclaimed, "Prepare to meet thy God, 0 Israel." Three times he gave the cry, and, turning right- about, he repeated it, and then went forward. Mr. Eldon Bankes, who is the prospective Unionist candidate for Flint Boroughs, addressing a Primrose League gathering at Brynypys, on Saturday, expressed warm admiration of the way in which Mr. Balfour had managed his party and of the methods with which he had met the tactics of the Opposition in the past session. Dealing with the fiscal question, in very gingerly fashion, Mr. Bankes said that there was no reason why any Unionist should be the least afraid that anything in the nature of Protection was likely to become the law of the country. He would like to advocate a policy that would put the Britisher at least on the same level as the foreigner, and if there was any preference to be given, it should be given the Britisher. He did not advocate a tax upon food. Personally he had not made up his mind on the fiscal question, but he thought the time had come for a change of attitude, and he liked Mr. Balfour's proposal to have a conference with the Colonies. There was a gathering of between 3,000 and 4,000 people awaiting the choir. Mr. Daniel Owen, the conductor, was carried shoulder high through the streets, headed by the band. Morien returned home from the Mountain Ash Eisteddfod the other night in the sweetest of tempers, his head filled with the music of the choirs, and his heart overflowing with sentiments of patriotism. A few minutes later he was almost rent with fierce indignation. During his absence thieves had broken into his kitchen garden and robbed him of some of his finest potatoes The Rev. D. Cunllo Davies, minister of Hermon Calvinistic Methodist Church, Dowlais, has received a very cordial call from Maengwyn Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, Machynlleth, and is considering the call.
