r-- :Ru:\¡ MICROSCOPE.—The instrument itself consists of a brass tube, about 2s long, and lin diameter; into one end of the tube screws a piece of brass, with a circular hole in its centre; in the day time this acts as a diaphragm, cutting off the more oblique rays; by artificial light this is removed when the instrument is in use. The other end of the tube is closed by a cliriile of glass, upon which the object to be examined is placed. The magnifier consists of a single lens of a very short focus, fixed between two brass plates which screw together, and which are pierced in the centre to receive it. The larger of these plates screws upon the tube, and thus forms the adjustment for properly focussing the object. It is es- sentially a,simple microscope, of high power, and is best adapted for transparent objects. To give an idea of its power, by comparison, it magnifies more than a Codring- ton or a Stanhope lens. It distinctly reveals the cor- puscles in human blood, and the markings upon the feathers from a motfs wing. TOOTHACHE.—Many persons believe that toothache is caused by exposure of, and irritation to, the nerve of the affected tooth; this is a mistake however, for though particles of food, draughts of hot liquids, or inspirations of cold air, do very often, by irritating the nerve of a decayed tooth, induce a fit of toothache, an attack is as frequently the result of constitutional causes as of local irritation, thus indicating its neuralgic character, and close affinity to tic-doloreux. Of all the constitutional causes inducing toothache, the most frequent is a dis- ordered state of the stomach such as acidity, flatulence, and indigestion, or whatever disturbs healthy action in the alimentary organs. To remove these exciting causes, a compound colocynth pill should be taken at bed time, and a stomachic powder, composed of ten grains oi car- bonate of soda, two grains of powdered Coiumbo, and four grains of ginger, in a wine glassful of peppermint or common water, three times a day. The best time to take these powders is an hour before b/eakfast, dinner, or tea. When there is a decayed tooth, and the attack of pain is the result of some particle of food irritating the nerve, or when it arises from inadvertently biting on the sensi- tive member, instead of attempting to remove the sub. stance by the tongue cr a toottrpiek, the teeth should be cleaned with warm water and a moderately hard brush, using the bristles as a lever to jerk out the irritating particle; and should the brush cause the gums to bleed, the bleeding should be encouraged, by filling the mouth occasionally with hot water. There ie hardly a drug in the pharmacopoeia that has not been tried 'by some dis- tracted sufferer, in the hope of breaking the paroxysm of the pain but out of the long list of medical agents there is not one that can be bmestly called a specific; though there are many that will afford relief, and some- times effect an almost instant abatement of the anguish, though possibly on the nest occasion they inay be totally inoperative.—Household.
