Alien, ■ Thomas Webb, William Allen, ■ William Davis, Phillip Gibbs, I Benjamin James, James Atkins, I Asa Morgan, John Edwards. I James Dunn, Richard Cosslett, I PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS. I FOR. THE I DISTRICT OF CANTON, IN THE PARISH OF I LLANDAFF, GLAMORGANSHIRE. I A Ta Meeting of the LLANDAFF EDUCATIONAL I J\ BOARD, held at Cardiff, on Tuesday, December I Lth, 1853, The LORD BISHOP of the Diocese in the I I Chair. The sum of Forty Pounds was voted towards I the building of Schools, and a Teacher's Residence at I Canton. I In the Village of Canton, a Hamlet in the Parish of I Llandaff, situated within a short distance of the im- I portant Sea-Port Town of Cardiff, an entirely new popu- I iation, numbering nearly Two Thousand Persons, has I within the last few months suddenly sprung up, having I amonsr its number some hundreds of Children and young I pirsons of both sexes, and there is every reason to believe I that the number will be very largely augmented during I the enduing summer. It is scarcely necessary to state, I that this large community consists chiefly of the labour- I ing class, or that the district into which It has so rapidly I immigrated, is wholly unprepared, either with Church I accommodation, or the means of education. Under the I benevolent auspices of the Lord Bishop, there is every I probability that a Church will speedily be erected, and I Funds amounting to upwards of £80U have already been I subscribed for the purpose but no provision tvhatevzr, I save the grant of the Forty Pounds, just recorded, has been made Jar the purpose of prov.idmy Schools. A Com- mittee, chosen by the inhabitants of the District has been formed, having for its object the collection of a Fund sufficient to build Schools and a Teacher's Residence, with as little delay as possible. The small room licensed for Divine Worship, and which has been devoted to this purpose for the last two years, is now used as a School- room. and about 40 Children attend but this Room is most inconveniently situated, very incommodious, and most undesirable, even as a temporary expedient until a new edifice can be erected. There can scarcely be a more pressing necessity for erecting Schools, and providing for the education of the young thau exists at Canton. Viewed in every aspect, either as a Christian, a political, or a social question, no greater evil can be committed, than to leave the mass ot ignorance that exists there, to continue longer than the time absolutely necessary to provide a remedy; and every day that passes before the attempt is made, but in- creases the mischief and makes the reformation more difficult. The Committee, therefore, earnestly and sin- cerely invites the co-operation of all the friends of eou- cation, and respectfully solicits their contributions in aid of this guod work. Subscriptions will be most thankfully received by Rev. D. C. Browning, M.A., Curate of Canton, 5, Romily- terrace, Canton Dr. Bird, Greenfield, Canton; Mr. W. P. James, Builder, Canton; Mr. Geo. Murray, H.M.C. Canton Mr. Smith, Surveyor, Canton •, Clement W aid run, Esq Solicitor, Cardiff; and at the following Bankers: — The National Provincial Bank; Messrs. Towgood and the West of England and South Wales District Bank, Cardiff. The followingextracts are from the Minute of the 2nd day of April, 1853, and from the Explanatory Circular of the Committee of Council on Education, Whitehall, i.ondon. That whenever the Owners and Occupiers of Pro. perty in any Parish, not having sufficient accommodation in Schools under inspection, and not forming part of any incorporated Town, nor containing more than 5,000 In- habitants, shall raise a sum equal to One Half of the estimated outlay fur the erection and fitting up of suitable premises, this Committee, on beingsatisfied 01 the urgency of the case, will grant One Half of the same outlay, pro vided that no such grant shall exceed the ratrf of Gs. tor every square foot of area in the School and Class-rooms, it the plans include a Teacher's residence, or 4s. if they donutincludeaucharesidenee." ,I Provided also, that the Site, Plans, Estimates, Specifications, and Trust Deed be satisfactory to this Committee." The promoters of a School who have obtained the approval of the Committee of Council tor their Plans, Specifications, and Estimate, will be in a position to appeal to their fellow-parishioners to the effect that the Government will grant as much as is locally subscribed up to the whole sum needed, subject to a certain maxi- mum outlay in proportion to the accommodation provided. Collections in Church or Chapel, the proceeds of the sale of ftJ materials, and the value (as certified by two pio- feaaional surveyors) of sites given without pecuniary coiwyderftiioQ, may be reckoned M .0 much Vocally con- PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT? rrpHE COMMITTEE of the CARDIFF YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION & INSTITUTE X give notice, that their READING-ROOMS, 81, ST. INCREASING SURVIVORSHIP ANNUITIES J) may be purchased on the new Deposit principle, spe- cially originated for the MITRE LIFE OFFICE. Clergy, men or others may secure tor their wives pensions at their decease by the occasional deposit of itOand up- wards, with the power of withdrawing the'sums depo- site. should the wife die DEFORE THE HUOBAND. Mun- VIVORSHIP ANNUITIES are aiso granted by way of provi- sion to Mothers, Sisters, or Daughters and Pensions to Servants.. The peculiar features of these Annuities areas follows: 1st.-The Deposit may lie made of from £10 to £ 10Q more or less, the whole of which will be returned in case the intending Annuitant die before the purcha. ser, and, as each Deposit payment purchases an inde- pendent increase in the Annuity, there is no occasion for their being made with the inconveuieiu regularity lequired under the old system. 2nd. —If the intending Annuitant survive the purchaser, and thus enter upon her Annuity, she will receive at the time of his decease a Botius of accumulated simple interest at 4 per cent, 011 the deposits, for every year that the purchaser has lived from the date of his purchase to the date of his death, provided that such Bonus shall not exceed the amount of the Deposits. 3rd. —Every five years the Annuity will be increased byadivision of the profits on the Mutual principle arising from the Annuity Department of the Society. By way of example—A son, aged 35, the sole support of his mother, aged 55, desires to secure some ptovision for her in case of his unexpected death. Hymetety sinking .eIOO, he secures an annuity to her. if she sur- vive him, of £31 2s. 4d. per year, together with a Cash Present, by way of Bonus, of £4 on the £100 for every year that he lives. Thus, if he live to the age of 45. she has £40 handed over to her, and enters upon the annuity of £31 2s. 4d. If, however, she die before him the whole £100 is returned to him without the usual deduc- tions for fines, head rate, and other charges of the old system.
