ENGINEER—Mr. James Dredge. BANKERS & TRBASORBRS. Stuckey's Banking Company, at all their Branches. WESTON-SUPER-MARE, as a watering-place, is w most delightfully situated on the Bristol Channel, and from the salubrity of its air, picturesque scenery, and many natural local advantages, has for many years been rising in public estimation. The Beach has long been pre-eminent for extent, being upwards of Two Miles in length, to which the tide ebbs and flows without impediment, and its proximity to Bristol, Wells, Bridg- water (each only Twenty Miles distant), Bath (Thirty Miles), and to Gloucester and Cheltenham, and the ease with which it is accessible by means of the Gloucester, Great Western, and Bristol and Exeter Railways, along which trains pass seven times daily in each direction into the town of Weston-super-Mare, offers unusual advan- tages and inducements for the erection of a Landing Pier and Slip, and the promise of a certain profitable return upon the capital invested, such as can be afforded at no other point in the Bristol Channel, and for this ample reason, there is no other place on the coast where any existing line of railroad touches, and it is obvious, therefore, that the outlay of capital which must necessa- rily be involved in the creation of those facilities which at present exist at Weston-super-Mare would propor- tionately reduce the return to the shareholder. If, therefore, it be necessary to expend a capital ofjE300,000 in order to obtain a railway and pier from another point in the Bristol Channel, at least an outlay of JE250,000 of such capital would and must be devoted to the attain- ment of that object, namely, a railway communication (which the port of Weston-super-Mare already possesses.) The committee, therefore, would assert (and defy con- tradiction) that no other port on the Bristol Channel can ever be in the same position as Weston-super-Mare without an outlay of capital to at least ten times the amount required at that place, and the result to the shareholders is too obvious to need further comment. The situation of the town also offers an immediate and direct point of communication with Cardiff, the Taff Vale Railway, and the whole of South Wales, the distance being only Eight Miles across the Channel, without any obstruction and it is proposed to establish a Steam Ferry between these towns, which will give a more ready com- munication with South Wales and the whole of the West of England than can b&dbtained by any other means already established, or at present in contemplation. It is announced that a branch railway will be shortly laid down from the Bristol and Exeter line to the central and eastern parts of the county of Somerset, through the city of Wells, so as to connect the town of Weston-super- Mare with the more distant southern counties, and the various important railways in those localities; and it is confidently believed that the opening of a direct commu- nication with South Wales from Weston-super-Mare, and the facility to be afforded for landing passengers at all states of the tide at the latter place, will much increase the traffic by this route, to which the Taff Vale and now proposed South Wales line will be great auxiliaries. There are at present at Weston-super-Mare five excel- lent hotels, a bathing establishment equal to any in the kingdom, erected by the late Dr. Fox, of Brislington, iSnd still held by his family, and 23,359 passengers were brought by the railway alone to the town in the course of the last year, exclusive of those arriving by other con- veyances and there are at present upwards of 550 houses. The population in 1831 was 1,359, and is now between three and four thousand. The plan proposed is to unite the main land with the Island of Bearnbeck, by means of a suspension bridge (upon the principle for which Mr. Dredge, of Bath, has obtained a patent), approaching the island in a north- western direction, passing over it and extending the Pier into the Channel to a distance of about 300 yards from the extreme point of the island. The approach from the Channel will be at all times at a depth of water sufficient to ensure the safe-landing of passengers, being at the lowest point (as shown by the government survey) not less than 18 feet; and will give a safe, speedy, and cheap mode of communication to parties visiting or trading to the Western, Welsh, and Irish coasts. There are at present twelve steamers passing Weston- super-Mare almost daily to Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Tenby, Hayle, Swansea, and Liverpool. Two steamers from Cardiff, and four from Newport also regularly trade from Bristol, a portion of the passengers and traffic by all of which, as well as a share of the Severn trade, may be fairly calculated upon, when it is remembered that Weston-super-Mare will, by means of the Pier, be ap- proachable at all times, and that the present hours of sailing of the Irish and Welsh boats are regulated accord- ing to the state of the tide, by which the duration of the voyage is necessarily influenced, their arriving within the period their power could accomplish being unavailing unless the tide to Bristol serves to carry them up the river. The proposed Pier will therefore be particularly de- sirable for persons coming from or going to Ireland or Wales. The present daily railway communications from the Town of Weston-super-Mare is four times to London six times to Bristol and Bath, and eight times to Exeter; so that persons, by means of the proposed Pier, will often be at Paddington or Exeter before they could, by the present mode, reach Bristol, and always be one or two trains in advance of any other present place of landing in the Bristol Channel. r s The contemplated Pier will be so constructed as to afford a delightful promenade to visiters and inhabitants of Weston-super-Mare at all times, as well as the oppor- tunity of immediate resort to the sea and to the surround- ing villages, while it is confidently expected that it will give a considerable impetus to trade. With such advantages, and the toll proposed to be received from the many persons frequenting the Pier passengers landing there, jthe charge on an extensive influx of goods to and from Ireland, Wales, and other parts, and the prospective result arising from the surface of Building Land (upwards of an Acre), not required for the purposes of the Pier, on the Island of Bearnbeck, the capitalist will ensure an ample return for investment. John Hugh Smyth Pigott, Esq., the Lord of the Manor, has most liberably pledged himself to give the land and approaches, and all the stone and wood from the hill adjoining, requisite for the undertaking, and to take 50 Shares, being the largest number which will be allotted to any one individual; and, as a considerable proportion of the proposed capital has been already applied for, the allotment will very shortly be made. Amongst the first and most necessary of the contem- plated Extensions is the Line of Railway now proposed the objects of which are to connect, by a direct Line, the teeming and fertile Districts of Herefordshire and the adjoining highly productive Agricultural Counties of MTU r Cardigan with the great Mineral Districts of "yrTidvil and the Neighbourhood; and by means Manchester and Birmingham Continuation and T l»nl^UnCJW?' In the latter neighbourhood the want of Coal is much felt. Improvement in Trade, increased Profits to Mining Establishments and Manufac- turers, the more ready interchange of Food for the products of the Mines, and general addition to prosperity must follow from the construction of this Line, which bM the atrit of clashing with no other project, and of being strongly sought after and recommended by existing interests. This Line will leave the Main Line at Glasbury, from whence it will run in an almost direct course along the Banks of the Llunvy River through Talgarth by Llangrose Lake, crossing the river Usk at a most favourable point; it will then intersect the populous neighbourhood of Talybont, and, after striking the Valleys of the Glyn and Taffechan, terminate at Merthyr Tidvil. The necessary connection of this Line with the Taff Vale and South Wales Railways will be obvious. A short Branch from the Glyn Valley will connect the Line with the Great Iron Works and Mineral Districts of Sirhowy, Tredegar, and Rhymney; and, by means of the Tredegar Railway, connect it also with the important Town and Port of Newport. It may be remarked that this Line has long been called for by the Local Wants of the Districts affected by its progress, and was surveyed many years since by an eminent Engineer (the late George Overton, Esq., who planned the first Railway for Locomotive Power in the Kingdom.) The length of the Line will be about Twenty Miles. In the Allotment of Shares (which will take place at the earliest possible moment, on account of the necessity of being prepared for the ensuing Session of Parliament,) preference will be given to parties locally interested in the Line, and to Scrip Holders in the Gloucester and Aberystwith Railway Company. Bankers-Commercial Bank of London National Pro- vincial Bank, Bridgend and Cardiff; Messrs. Towgood and Co., Cardiff Engineer-Charles Edward Bernard, Esq. Secretary-John Petherick, Esq., pro tem. THIS Railway is projected for the purpose of uniting the Rhondda and Ely Valleys with the South Wales Railway, at a few miles distance from the port of Cardiff; and to open a new mineral district, one of the richest and most important in South Wales, which is at present without the means of transit for its immense and valuable products. It will pass through the central portion of the great coal field of Glamorganshire, where iron-stone also abounds with the coal in immense quantities, and laying, geologically speaking, nearly flat, and obtainable, for the most part, by proper levels. The coal, in addition to its being of excellent quality foriron making, as is proved at Merthyr and Aberdare, is also, like that of those dis- tricts, of the very best description for steam-purposes, being nearly smokeless, although inflammable; indeed so pre-eminently is the superiority of this description of coal established for steam-purposes over any other, that the demand for it far exceeds the supply, and promises, according to the opinion of the most eminent marine engineers, to supersede all others for purposes of steam- navigation. This source of traffic alone will afford a handsome return for the capital invested, as has been demonstrated in every instance where even tramroads or canals have been constructed to open the mineral resources of other lose promising Tallies in Wales than the Rhondda, I which is celebrated for the abundance, quality, and facility of obtaining its productions. An inexhaustible supply of limestone (so necessary for the manufacture of irop and for agricultural purposes) may be obtained by meatl of this Railway, much nearer and cheaper than by any other line. This line will afford to the increasing population of the rich vales of Ely and Rhondda a much desired communi- cation with the great market town and port of Cardiff, from whence, at present, they may be said to be almost excluded. It is intended that the line shall commence at Blaen Rhondda, the head of the Rhondda Valley, and proceed down by a natural pass between the hills of Ffrwd Amws, a distance of eight miles, where it will enter the Ely Valley and proceed down (a further distance of six miles) to Lanelay Bridge, near Lantrissent, and there join the South Wales Railway, thus opening a communication under the most advantageous circumstances, as to dis- tance, with all the ports in the Bristol Channel. A preliminary survey has already been made by com- petent parties, and it is found that the country admits of highly favourable gradients, so much so that it is confi- dently anticipated that the works will be executed very con- siderably under the advertised capital. The Landowners along the line are favourable to this undertaking, and the names of many influential proprie- tors will be found on the Provisional Committee. No Subscriber will be answerable beyond the amount of his deposit until the Act is obtained, and then not be- yond the amount of his subscription. Until an act of Parliament shall be obtained the affairs of this Company shall be under the control of the man- aging directors, to whom power is given to allot the shares, and to apply the funds of the Company in payment of all the expenses incurred in its formation and in the preparation of the plans and sections to be submitted to Parliament. Power will be applied for in the act (and in the mean time is hereby given to the managing directors as above) to raise any additional capital, to extend or abandon any part of the line, to make branch lines, or enter into any arrangements, by amalgamation or otherwise, with any other company or companies, and also to nominate the first directors of the Company. In the allotment of Shares, a preference will be given to Landowners on the line and other parties locally in- terested. Prospectuses and Maps may be had of, and applications for Shares may be addressed in the form annexed to, W. B. James, Esq., Solicitor, 5, Basinghall-street, Lon- don to W. PROSPECTUS. rfI HIS line of Railway will form the shortest possible route JL to Liverpool, Manchester, and the northern counties, from the populous and important portion of South Wales included in the counties of Glamorgan, Carmarthen, and Pembroke, in which are situated several important sea- ports, and extensive copper, iron, tin plate, chemical, and other works, also potteries, collieries, &c. and the Go. vernment Dock-yard of Pembroke and will afford nearly the same advantages to the whole Principality. It will pass through the centre of an extensive country famous for the breeding of cattle for the supply of the English markets, and through districts containing many lead, copper and other mines, which, owing to the want of outlet, have hitherto been neglected; and it will afford to the whole country great convenience and facility of com- munication, well calculated to increase its importance. The easy and direct communication by this route with the south of Ireland will be evident, and prove the means of considerable traffic for goods, cattle, corn, and passengers. Whether taken as an expeditious mode of conveying the valuable manufactures of South Wales, and its large supplies of cattle and corn, as well as those from the south of Ireland, to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, and the central and northern parts of England and Scot- land, or as the ready means of supplying the various manufactures of the north, foreign imports, and shop goods to the various towns and districts partaking of the advantages of the line, or as an easy and agreeable transit for the tourist to the far famed beauties of North and South Wales, and the new field open to the trading com- munity, it must, in a commercial, agricultural, and national point of view, be considered as one of the most important railways in the kingdom, compared with which all other railway schemes for Wales, however useful they may be in their several localities, are but of secondary importance. The line will be taken in a direct course, with scarcely any deviation. The country presents few engineering difficulties. The importance of the undertaking, would, however, justify a more than average expenditure if it were necessary and, when the great saving of distance is considered which will be effected from the towns of Swansea, Neath, Llanelly, Tenby, Pembroke, Haverford- west, Carmarthen, Newport, Cardigan, Aberystwith, and the whole of these districts, and the important manufac- turing locality of Merthyr Tydvil, in the journey to Liverpool, to Birmingham, and the midland counties, it will be obvious that no narrow views as to expenditure ought to stand in the way of making this railroad as direct and efficient as possible. As the line will traverse a part of the country not hitherto possessing the same facilities of commerce as other portions of the kingdom, a continually increasing trade far beyond the usual multiplication of traffic shown ordinarily to be the effect of railway communication may be calculated upon. The committee rely on the strenuous aid and cooperation of those railway companies whose line of rail forms part of this undertaking but to avoid all uncertainty on this head, it is intended to take ample powers for the completion of the whole line by the pre- sent as an independent company. It is proposed to construct a branch to Brecon and the several towns in the vicinity of the line, where require ), and to take power to increase the capital sufficient for that purpose. Looking at the magnitude and importance of the line, and the benefits it will confer to the whole country, but to the principality of Wales in particular, it is expected that the nobility, gentry, and trading community will, by their cordial cooperation, enable the Company to make this railway one of the best, the most prosperous, and useful in the kingdom. The late successful demonstration of the atmospheric principle on the Croydon Railway have led the Committee to have the line surveyed, with a view to the adoption of either system of traction, when it shall have been fully ascertained which is the best adapted to this line. Until an act of Parliament shall be obtained, the affairs af the company shall be under the control of the Com- mittee of Management, who are empowered to enter into such arrangements as shall best serve the interests of this company. Power will be taken under the act to limit the respon- sibility of shareholders to the amount of their subscription, md to allow interest at 4 percent, upon the calls. Preference in the allotment of shares will be given to those locally interested and to the shareholders of con- necting lines. The Parliamentary contract and subscribers' agreement tvill be ready for signature on payment of the deposits.
