Amongst the first and most necessary of the contem- plated Extensions is the Line of Railway now proposed the objects of which are to connect, by a direct Line, the teeming and fertile Districts of Herefordshire and the adjoining highly productive Agricultural Counties of Radnor and Cardigan with the great Mineral Districts of Merthyr Tidvil and the Neighbourhood and by means of the Manchester and Birmingham Continuation and Welsh Junction, proposed to run from Crewe, vid Llangerrig, (whete that Line meets that of the Glouces- ter, Aberystwith, and Central Wales) to Aberystwith, connect North and South Wales, also Shropshire, Cheshire, fie., with the West of England. It will be hardly necessary to dilate upon the enormous Traffic which must exist between the densely populated Districts of Merthyr Tidvil, the Agricultural Counties before mentioned, with the surrounding country, and the Mines of Cardiganshire. In the latter neighbourhood the want of Coal is much felt. Improvement in Trade, increased Profits to Mining Establishments and Manufac- turers; the more ready interchange of Food for the products of the Mines, and general addition to prosperity must follow from the construction of this Line, which has the merit of clashing with no other project, and of being strongly sought after and recommended by existing interests. This Line will leaVe the Main Line at Glasbury, from whence it will ruh in an almost direct course along the Banks of the Llunvy River through Talgarth by Llangrose Lake, crossing the river Usk at a most favourable point; it will then intersect the populous neighbourhood of Talybont, and, after striking the Valleys of the Glyn and Taffechan, terminate at Merthyr Tidvil. The necessary connection of this Line with the Taff Vale and South Wales Railways will be obvious. A short Branch from the Glyn Valley will connect the Line with the Great Iron Works and Mineral Districts of Sirhowy, Tredegar, and Rhymney; by means of the Tredegar Railway, connect it also with the important TOwn and Port of Newport. v It may be remarked that this Line has long been called for by the Local Wants of the Districts affected by its progress, and was surveyed many years since by an eminent Engineer (the late George Overton, Esq., who planned the first Railway for Locomotive Power in the Kingdom.) The length of the Line will be about Twenty Miles. THIS Railway is projected fcAhe purpose of uniting J_ the Rhondda and Ely Valleys with the South Wales Railway, at a few miles distance from the port of Cardiff; and to open a new mineral district, one of the richest and most important in South Wales, which is at present without the means of transit for its immense and valuable products. It will pass through the central portion of the great coal field of Glamorganshire, where iron-stone also abounds with the coal in immense quantities, and laying, geologically speaking, nearly flat, and obtainable, for the most part, by proper levels. The coal, in addition to its being of excellent quality for iron making, as is proved at Merthyr and Aberdare, is also, like that of those dis- tricts, of the very best description for steam-purposes, being nearly smokeless, although inflammable; indeed so pre-eminently is the superiority of this description of coal established for steam-purposes over any other, that the demand for it far exceeds the supply, and promises, according to the opinion of the most eminent marine engineers, to supersede all others for purposes of steam- navigation. This source of traffic alone will afford a handsome return for the capital invested, as has been demonstrated in every instance where even tramroads or canals have been constructed to open the mineral resources of other less promising vallies in Wales than the Rhondda, which is celebrated for the abundance, quality, and facility of obtaining its production. An inexhaustible supply of limestone (so necessary for the manufacture of iron and for agricultural purposes) may be obtained by means of this Railway, much nearer and cheaper than by any other line. This line will afford to the increasing population of the rich vales of Ely and Rhondda a much desired communi- cation with the great market town and port of Cardiff, from whence, at present, they may be said to be almost excluded. It is intended that the line shall commence at Blaen Rhondda, the head of the Rhondda Valley, and proceed down by a natural pass between the hills of Ffrwd Amws, a distance of eight miles, where it will enter the Ely Valley and proceed down (a further distance of six miles) to Lanelay Bridge, near Lantrissent, and there join the South Wales Railway, thus opening a communication under the most advantageous circumstances, as to dis- tance, with all the ports in the Bristol Channel. A preliminary survey has already been made by com- petent parties, and it is found that the country admits of highly favourable gradients, so much so that it is confi- dently anticipated that the works will be executed very con- siderably under the advertised capital. The Landowners along the line are favourable to this undertaking, and the names of many influential propri tors will be found on the Provisional Committee. Vj No Subscriber will be answerable beyond the amount of his deposit until the Act is obtained, and then not be- yond the amount of his subscription. Until an act of Parliament shall be obtained the affairs of this Company shall be under the control of the man- aging directors, to whom power is given to allot the shares, and to apply the funds of the Company in payment of all the expenses incurred in its formation and in the preparation of the plans and sections to be submitted to Parliament. Power will be applied for in the act (and in the mean time is hereby given to the managing directors as above) to raise any additional capital, to extend or abandon any part of the line, to make branch lines, or enter into any arrangements, by amalgamation or otherwise, with any other company or companies, and also to nominate the first directors of the Company. The communication by railway between these impor- tant towns and the contiguous hop and cider districts has been entirely left unprovided for by existing arrange- ments, and this line is brought forward under the auspices of the Great Eastern and Western Railway Company, on the strong representations and request of a large and most influential body of the landed gentry of the neigh- bourhood. The object proposed is to make a direct communication between Leominster, Bromyard, and Worcester, which latter town has always been the natural market for the produce of these districts, and to afford the inhabitants the most direct communication with London, as compared with other lines, by upwards of 30 miles. 'PHIS line of Railway will form the shortest possible route 1_ to Liverpool, Manchester, and the northern counties, from the populous and important portion of South Wales included in counties of Glamorgan, Carmarthen, and Pembroke, in which are situated several important sea- ports, and extensive copper, iron, tin plate, chemical, and other works, also potteries, collieries, &c. and the Go- vernment Dock-jard of Pembroke and will afford nearly the same advantage to the whole Principality. It will pass through the centre of an extensive country famous for the breeding of cattle for the supply ef the English markets, and thtough districts containing many lead, copper and other mines, which, owing to the want of an outlet, have hitherto been neglected and it will afford to the whole country great convenience and facility of com- munication, well calculated to increase its importance. The easy and direct communication by this route with the south of Ireland will be evident, and prove the means of considerable traffic for goods, cattle, corn, and passengers. Whether taken as an expeditious mode of conveying the valuable manufactures of South Wales, and its large supjfces of cattle and corn, as well as those from the south of Ireland, to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, and the central and northern parts, of England and Scot- laud, or as the ready means of supplying the various manufactures of the north, foreign imports, jtRtl shop goods to the various towns and districts partaking of the advantages of the line, or as an easy and agreeable transit for the tourist to the far famed beauties of North and South Wales and the new field open to the trading com- munity, it must, in a commercial, agricultural, and national point of view, be considered as one of the most important railways in the kingdom, and compared with which all other railway schemes for Wales, however useful they may be in their several localities, are but of secondary importance. The line will be taken in a direct course, with scarcely any deviation. The country presents few engineering difficulties. The importance of the undertaking, would, however, justify a more than average expenditure if it were necessary and, when the great saving of distance is considered which will be effected from the towns of Swansea, Neath, Llanelly, Tenby, Pembroke, Haverford- west, Carmarthen, Newport, Cardigan, Aberystwith, and the whole of these districts, and the important manufac- turing locality of Merthyr Tydvil, in the journey to Liverpool, to Birmingham, and the midland counties, it will be obvious that no narrow views as to expenditure ought to stand in the way of making this railroad as direct and efficient as possible. As the line will traverse a part of the country not hitherto possessing the same facilities of commerce as other portions of the kingdom, a continually increasing trade far beyond the usual multiplication of traffic shown ordinarily to be the effect of railway communication may be calculated upou. The committee rely on the strenuous aid and cooperation of those railway companies whose line of rail forms part of this undertaking but to avoid all uncertainty on this head, it is intended to take ample powers for the completion of the whole line by the pre- sent as an independent company. It is proposed to construct a branch to Brecon and the several towns in the vicinity of the line, where required, and to take power to increase the capital sufficient for that purpose. Looking at the magnitude and importance of the line, and the benefits it will confer to the whole country, but to the principality of Wales in particular, it is expected that the nobility, gentry, and trading community will, by their cordial cooperation, enable the Company to make this railway one of the best, the most prosperous, and useful in the kingdom. The late successful demonstration of the atmospheric principle on the Croydon Railway have led the Committee to have the line surveyed, with a view to the adoption of either system of traction, when it shall have been fully ascertained which is the best adapted to this line. Until an act of Parliament shall be obtained, the affairs of the company shall be under the control of the Com- mittee of Management, who are empowered to enter into such arrangements as shall best serve the interests of this company. Power will be taken under the act to limit the respon- sibility of shareholders to the amount of their subscription, and to allow interest at 4 per cent. upon the calls. Preference in the allotment of shares will be given to those locally interested and to the shareholders of con. necting lines. This line of Railway will have its Western Terminus at the port of Swansea, and will either adopt the pro- jected line from that port to and beyond Loughor Mill, called Swansea and Loughor Railway," when formed, and then extend itself to Pontardulais and Llandilo- Vawr, and on to Brecon, or else it will avail itself of the 35th sect. of the South Wales Railway Act, which enacts "That nothing in the said recited Acts, or in this Act contained, shall be construed, or taken to prevent or im- pede Nathaniel Cameron, Esq., of Dan-y-Graig, in the County of Glamorgan, his heirs, executors, administra- tors, or assigns, fiom making and maintaining any Railway, or Branch Railway, from certain Collieries, now belonging to the said Nathaniel Cameron, situate in the parishes of Loughor and* Llandilo-tal-y-bont, in the county of Glamorgan, to the Railway, or to the port of Swansea, or to the Port of Penyclawdd, or from making such Railway, or Branch Railway, along the side of, or parallel to the Railway, or from carrying the same across the Railway on the level thereof" And, making arrangements with that proprietor, carry this line across the South Wales Railway and that pro- prietor's coal-field, and proceed direct up the above route to Brecon. Arriving from Swansea at Brecon, and availing itself either of the proposed Welsh Midland line, or the Great Eastern and Western lines, if constructed, so far as those or other lines may appear applicable, this Railway will proceed to Hereford aud Worcester, and will there form a junction with the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway, taking advantage of that line as far as Birmingham, and will then join the Birmingham and Derby Railway, and proceed as far as Belper, or as near thereto as convenient, on the North Midland Railway, from whence it will be extended by Alflcton and Mansfield, to East Retford and Gainsborough, where it will form a junction with the Great Grimsby and Sheffield Railway, and proceed to New Holland Point opposite to Hull, which most impor- tant seaport forms its eastern terminus. The object of this company will be attained by the construction of about 80 miles only of Rail, and the use of other lines to the extent of about 140 miles. It is important to observe, and a glance at the map will show, that the proposed Line is the most direct line that can be formed between the sea ports of Hull and Swansea. In the allotment of the Shares of this Company, the proprietors on the different Lines, in connection here- with, as well as neighbouring land-owners, will be entitled to a preference. The directors reserve power to amalgamate, purchase, or otherwise unite with any other line of Railway, also to vary the route or m.^e any extensions that may appear to them desirable, and to increase the capital, if necessary, for the attainment of any such objects. The usual powers will be taken in the act of parlia- ment to allow each shareholder interest at the rate of E4 per cent. upon all deposits and calls until the Line be opened, and the amount of the liability of the share- holders will be limited to the amount of their subscriptions. THIS Line of Raihvay (which is proposed by the Duffryn Llynvi and Porth Cawl Raihvay Company), will embrace the richest Mineral Field in the Principality, lying chieny in the Hundreds of Newcastle and Ogmorc, and comprising a district of about 10 miles square, abounding with Coal of the best quality, also with Argil- aceous and Black Band Iron Ore. The readi^ means, therefore, for the transit and shipping Company's Coal to Ireland and various parts of Wales* f. well as the Continent, the Colonies, and elsewhere, \fJ thus be open to the Company. This mineral property (especially the Coal) has be*' surveyed and reported upon W. W. Taylor, Esq., gineer, of Swansea. That Gentleman, in his Rep^ divides the Coal into two separate quantities and quality and they are thus classified, viz About 900 acres 0 very superior Steam Coal, and about 400 acres of stro1 bituminous Coking Coal. Both of these kinds of Co*, have been proved in three veins, viz:—the Steam CoaV vein, 4 feet, and 2 of 3 feet each the bituminous 1 vein of 6 feet, and 2 of 2 feet each in thickness, > lying under a strong stone roof. In consequence of I excellent roof, the stalls or boards may be worked a gre J width with little timbering, and the Steam Coals very large. There are also many other veins not °Pe°jj The veins lying at an inclination of one in 6, and due eastern rise in 900 acres, and southern rise in acres. The flatness of the veins is very favourable ™ working much of the Coal by level. I It is impossible to prescribe a limit to the quantity Coal which may be extracted from this Coal-field. known quantity contained in the mines that have opened cannot be less than 20 millions of tons. LTP^ the crop of these veins a winning has already been effect^ from which the Coal can be readily and immedv worked to the extent of from three to four hundred ac< at something like 6,000 tons per acre. A steam-eng^ is already erected of sufficient power to draw off rd water, and to bring the Coal to the surface by an inch'1? plane. Other plans and arrangements are also be' ? adopted for working the coal to an almost extent. i At present, a short Railway has been laid down, screens erected for loading waggons, near the leading to the Port of Swansea, for the purpose of veying the Coal and Ores to that Port. Horses, y gons, and the necessary material for conveying 100 tons per day by the road, are already Pr0.vi<if belonging to the Company, who have also acquis £ convenient wharf and shipping place at the Swansea, held on a lease for a term of years, with some alterations, of loading three vessels at time. a The quality, also, of the Coal has been tested in ways, and the correctness of the analysis made by drew Ure, Esq., M.D., F.R.S., (see a copy of J certificate and report appended), has been the subsequent trial of the coal at H. M. Dockr Woolwich. ,(t Several trials have also been made on board in the Bristol Channel, in the presence of Mr. A comparative trial has also been made, in his at Her Majesty's Dock Yard, Woolwich.
