Hill, 21 A, Soho Square Mr. Thomas Lawrence, Brecon SECRETARY.—Mr. Thomas Hawker WHILST providing a grand Trunk Line for Central Vf Wales in the Gloucester, Aberystwith, and Central Wales Railway Company, the Directors of that important Undertaking have not been unmindful of the various solicitations they have received for the extension of its public usefulness. Amongst the first and most necessary of the contem- plated Extensions is the Line of Railway now proposed the objects of which are to connect, by a direct Line, the teeming and fertile Districts of Herefordshire and the adjoining highly productive Agricultural Counties of Radnor and Cardigan with the great Mineral Districts of Merthyr Tidvil and the Neighbourhood; and by means of the Manchester and Birmingham Continuation and Welsh Junction, proposed to run from Crewe, via Llangerrig, (where that Line meets that of the Glouces- ter, Aberystwith, and Central Wales) to Aberystwith, connecting North and South Wales, Shropshire, Cheshire' Sic., as also the West of England. It will be hardly necessary to dilate upon the enormous Traffic which must exist between the densely populated Districts of Merthyr Tidvil, the Agricultural Counties before mentioned, with the surrounding country, and the Mines of Cardiganshire. In the latter neighbourhood the want of Coal is much felt. Improvement in Trade, increased Profits to Mining Establishments and Manufac- turers, the more ready interchange of Food for the products of the Mines, and general addition to prosperity must follow from the construction of this Line, which has the merit of clashing with no other project, and of being strongly sought after and recommended by existing interests. This Line will leave the Main Line at Glasbury, from whence it will run in an almost direct course along the Banks of the Llunvy River through Talgarth by Llangose Lake, crossing the river Usk at a most favourable point; it will then intersect the populous neighbourhood of Talybont, and, after striking the Valleys of the Glyn and Taffechan, terminate at Merthyr Tidvil. The necessary connection of this Line with the Taff Vale and South Wales Railways will be obvious. It may be remarked that this Line has long been called for by the Local Wants of the Districts affected by its progress, and was surveyed many years since by an eminent Engineer (the late George Overton, Esq., who planned the first Railway for Locomotive Power in the Kingdom.) The length of the Line will be about Twenty Miles. In the Allotment of Shares (which will take place at the earliest possible moment, on account of the necessity of being prepared for the ensuing Session of Parliament,) preference will be given to parties locally interested in the Line, and to Scrip Holders in the Gloucester and Aberystwith Railway Company. Applications for Shares in the annexed Form, may be made to the respective Solicitors; to the Secretary, at the Offices of the Company, No. 1, New Broad Street; or to the following Local Solicitors :— Birmingham Messrs. Secretary-Mr, John Petherick. Solicitors- We. B. James, Esq., 5, Basinghall-street, Lon- don; William Morgan, Esq., Bridgend, Glamorgan. Bankers-COminercial Bank of London National Pro- vincial Bank, Bridgend and Cardiff. THIS Railway is projected for the purpose of uniting the Rhondda and Ely Valleys with the South Wales Railway, at a fewmiles distance from the port of Cardiff; and to open a new mineral district, one of the richest and most important in South Wales, which is at present without the means of transit for its immense and valuable products. It will pass through the central portion of the great coal field of Glamorganshire, the geological formation of which is decidedly proved to afford most excellent eoal and iron-stone' in greater abundance than any other in the kingdom, with facilities of mining access seldom equalled, and the quality of the coal is admirably adapted for steam purposes and the manufacture of iron. An inexhaustible supply of limestone (so necessary for the manufacture of iron and for agricultural purposes) may be obtained by means of this Railway, much nearer and cheaper than by any other line. It is intended that the line shall commence at Blaen Rhondda, the head of the Rhondda Valley, and proceed down to a natural pass between the hills of Ffrwd Amws, a distance of eight miles, where it will enter the Ely cl Valley and proceed down (a further distance of six miles) to Lanelay Bridge, near Lantrissent, and there join the South Wales Railway, thus opening a communication under the most advantageous circumstances, as to dis- tance, with all the ports in the Bristol Channel. No Engineering difficulties present themselves in the formation of this line; and it is confidently anticipated that the works will be executed very considerably under the advertised capital. The Landowners along the line are favourable to this undertaking, and the names of many influential proprie- tors will be found on the Provisional Committee. No Subscriber will be answerable beyond the amount of his deposit until the Act is obtained, and then not be- yond the amount of his subscription. In the allotment of Shares, a preference will be given to Landowners on the line and other parties locally in- terested. Prospectuses and Maps may be had of, and applications for Shares may be addressed in the form annexed to, W. B. James, Esq., Solicitor, 5, Basinghall-street, Lon. don; to W. THIS Railway will commence at the Station of the Monmouth and Hereford and Worcester and South Wales Junction at Ross, proceeding through a rich agri. cultural district, now devoid of Railway accomodation, to Abergavenny, and from thence by Llanelly, Nant-y- Glo, Tredegar, Ebbw Vale, Rumney, and Dowlais to Merthyr Tydvil, at which place it will join the Taff Vale Railway. The distance will not exceed 40 miles. On reference to the map it will be seen that this Line, in conjunction with the proposed Worcester and South Wales Junction Railway, via Ledbury, Malvern, and Ross, will perfect a continuous and direct communication from Merthyr Tydvit to London, Gloucester, Birmingham, South Staffordshire and the North. The population of Merthyr and the surrounding Mine- ral districts exceeds 120,000, and this Line will place it in direct connexion with the agricultural counties of Monmouth, Hereford, and Worcester. The Line will be laid down so as to render the greatest accommodation to the principal Iron Works in the district through which it will pass, and a saving of JO miles over any other Line will be effected between Merthyr and Worcester, and other places north and east of that city. Arrangements are in progress with the Worcester and South Wales Junction Railway Company for the mutual fidTant6iffe of Qejppaoieii Applicants for Shares who are personally known to Members of the Provisional Committee are requested to refer to one of such Committee; all other ap- plicants will be required to give a reference to some banker or other person of known respectability in Lon- don or the town from which the application is nmde. Holders of Scrip in the Worcester and South Wales Junction Railway will be entitled to an equal number of Shares in this Company, upon making application in the usual form and within a time to be hereafter specified; subject, however, in the cases of holders to whom the shares were not originally allotted, to the approbation of the Provisional Committee, and all such persons must therefore give a reference according to the form below. The usual power will be taken by the Act to allo^y interest at 4 per cent. per annum on the amount of sub- scription paid up, and no subscriber will be answerable for more than the amount of his deposit until the Act is obtained, and then not beyond his subscription. PROSPECTUS. 'I'HIS,line of Railway will form the shortest possible route I to Liverpool. Manchester, and the northern counties, from the populous and important portion of South Wales included in the counties of Glamorgan, Carmarthen, and Pembroke, in which are situated several important sea- ports, and extensive copper, iron, tin plate, chemical, and other works, also potteries, collieries, &c. and the Go. vernment Dock-yard of Pembroke and will afford nearly the same advantage to the whole Principality. It will pass through the centre of an extensive country famous for the breeding of cattle for the supply of the English markets, and through districts containing many lead, copper and other mines, which, owing to the want of an outlet, have hitherto been neglected; and it will afford to the whole country great convenience and facility of com- munication, well calculated to increase its importance. The easy and direct communication by this route with the south of Ireland will be evident, and prove the means of considerable traffic for goods, cattle, corn, and passengers. Whether taken as an expeditious mode of conveying the valuable manufactures of South Wales, and its large supplies of cattle and corn, as well as those from the south of Ireland, to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, and the central and northern parts of England and Scot- land, or as the ready means of supplying the various manufactures of the north, foreign imports, and shop goods to the various towns and distrltts partaking of the advantages 6f the line, or as an easy and agreeable transit for the tourist to the far famed beauties of North and South Wales, and the new field open to the trading com- munity, it must, in a commercial, agricultural, and national point of view, be considered as one of the most important railways in the kingdom, and compared to which all other railway schemes for Wales, however useful they may be in their several localities, are but of secondary importance. The line will be taken in a direct course, with scarcely any deviation. The country presents few engineering difficulties. The importante of the undertaking, would, however, justify a more than average expenditure if it were necessary and, when the great saving of distance is considered which will be effected from the towns of Swansea, Neath, Llanelly, Tenby, Pembroke, Haverford- west, Carmarthen, Newport, Cardigan, Aberystwith, and the whole of these districts, and the important manufac- turing locality of Merthyr Tydvil, in the journey to Liverpool, to Birmingham, and the midland counties, it will be obvious that no narrow views as to expenditure ought to stand in the way of making this railroad as direct and efficient as possible. As the line will traverse a part of the country not hitherto possessing the same facilities of commerce as other portions of the kingdom, a continually increasing trade far beyond the usual multiplication of traffic shown ordinarily to be the effect of railway communication may be calculated upon. The committee rely on the strenuous aid and cooperation of those railway companies whose line of rail forms part of this undertaking but to avoid idl uncertainty on this head, it is intended to take ample powers for the completion of the whole line by the pre. I sent as an independent company. ■' It is proposed to construct a branch to Brecon and the several towns in the vicinity of the liue, where required and to take power to increase the capital sufficient for I that purpose. Looking at the magnitude and importance of the line, and the benefits it will confer to the whole country, but to the principality of Wales in particular, it is expected that the nobility, gentry, and trading community will, by their cordial cooperation, enable the Company to make, 1 Hsf'vay one the best, the most prosperous, and useful in the kingdom. 1 he late successful demonstration of the atmospheric principle on the Croydon Railway have led the Committe* to have the line purveyed, with a view to the adoption of either system of traction, when it shall have been fully ascertained which is the best adapted to this line. L ntil an act of Parliament shall be obtained, the affaiii of the company shall be under the control of the Com- mittee of Management, who are empowered to enter into such arrangements as shall best serve the interests of thi* company. T1' be taken under the act to limit the respon- S' 1 °n 8 la!t'^°'ders to the amount of their subscription, and to allow interest at 4 per cent. upon the calls. Preference in the allotment of shares will be given to those locally interested and to the shareholders of con- necting lines. The Parliamentary contract and subscribers' agreement will be ready for signature on payment of the deposits. Applications for shares to be made at the office of the company, to the solicitors, at 18, St. Paul's Church-yaul, W"' and to the following agents and stock and share brokers viz., London Agents-Messrs. Ellis, Elliott, and Co., Solicitors SECRETARY—Mr. William Protheroe, 10, Old Jewry Chambers, London. rpHIS line will join the Chepstow, Forest of Dean, and L Gloucester Junction Railway at Chepstow, and ex- tend westward to Piercefield, the far-famed Windcliff, and Tintern Abbey, to the towns of Usk and Pontypool, and over the centre of the great iron and coal field of South Wales, passing near to and through the midst of the extensive iron-works and collieries of Monmouthshire and Glamorganshire to join the Aberdare branch of the Taff Vale Railway, which connects Merthyr Tydvil and Aberdare with Cardiff thus forming a much more direct and almost straight line-by means of the railways already made and projected between those immensely populous districts, and the centre of the kingdom and London, by means of which the journey by land will be shortened between the metropolis and this great seat of industry to four and a half, and between Newport and Cardiff to five hours, which at present, even by the aid of existing railways, cannot be performed in less than from ten to twelve hours. It will be found by reference to the official census of 1831 and 1841 that the average increase of population of the county of Monmouth exceeded that of any other county in England or Wales. This fact is referred to as illustrative of the rising importance of the country through which this railway is intended to pass, and of the very large passenger traffic which may reasonably be calculated upon. The town of Usk, with Ragland, and the rich agricul- tural district for many miles around, are supplied by carts from the vicinity of Pontypool with coal and lime, which are there obtained at a cheap rate, and in return cattle and provisions of all kinds, hay, corn, and pit timber to an enormuus extent are sent to the iron-works and collieries, where the consumption is immense. This traffic alone must necessarily ensure a considerable revenue to the Company, independent of the great traffic from the manufactured iron, fire-bricks, and paving stone, which is of superior quality, and in great abund. ance. The present cost of conveying and delivering iron and tin plates from the works to London, including transit to the port, shipping charges, freight and in- surances, amounts to little less than 20s. per ton whilst by this railway, and those it is intended to join, the average cost at the rate usually charged for such goods on railways will effect a saving of at least 25 per cent., and be conveyed within twenty-four hours, instead of the average voyage round the Land's End of three, and not unfrequently six weeks, and with the very important advantage of delivering the iron free from rust, which is unavoidable on a sea-voyage, in small bars more par- ticularly, causing a deterioration of from 15s. to 20s. per ton at least. This Railway, by means of the Chepstow, Forest of Dean, and Gloucester Junction, and the Birmingham and Gloucester Railways, will open Birmigham as a mar- ket for the manufactured iron of South Wales, from which it has been in a measure excltlded, from the diffi- cult and expensive transit by the River Severn and canals. Large quantities of iron ore, known as Haem atate ore," is imported into Wales from Lancashire, Cumberland, Devon, and Cornwall; whilst ore of a similar quality, and equal productiveness for iron making, 'exists in abun- dance in the Forest of Dean, and may be raised and deli- vered by means of this and the Chepstow, Forest of Dean and Gloucester Junction Railway to the different Iron Works in Monmouthshire and Glamorganshire at an average of from 2.5 to 30 per cent, less than it costs at present, and at the same time leave a handsome remune- ration to the railway companies. The Committee of Management have gone very care- fully into estimates of the goods traffic especially, and they feel justified in expressing a decided opinion that the re- venue from this source alone will yield 5 per cent. on the proposed capital of the Company, in addition to the revenue to be derived from the other traffic. This railway will pass close to, and within a few miles of all the iron and tin works of Monmonthshire, and the' principal part of those in Glamorganshire and the fol- lowing short statistic of the extent of those stupendous undertakings will give an idea of the vast importance of the present project. The iron and tin works commence at Pontypool, and are- 1. The Pantymoile Tin and Iron Works of Capel Han. bury Leigh, Esq. 2. The Blaendare Iron and Coal Works of R. J. Blewitt, Msq., M.P. 3.
