PLIMSOLL.—An applica- tion has been made to the magistrates at Carnarvon to fix a day for holding a Board of Trade inquiry into the circumstances of the loss off Bardsey Island of -the schooner Nancy, of and from Carnarvon, Hugh Jones, master. It was stated that tne vessel was ninety .years-old. Her deck was not caulked. When seas •were shipped water^ran between her timbers upon a cargoof lime stowed in the hold. Mrs. McLeod, the wife of a military surgeon at1 Car- lisle, has been accidentally poisoned by an over-dose of morphia. She had been nursing a sick child, and cts imable to sleep from restlessness. Her hushallJ gave her doses of morphia to procure sleep, which at first produced no effect. Suddenly her condition became so alarming that he sent for other advice, but the C:1se proved fatal. A law has just come into force in the United States, providing that when cattle, sheep, or other animals, are conveyed in vessels or cars, they shall not be kept in confinement for more than 2d hours, at the end of which time they shall be released for live hours *or rest, food, and water. The expense is wade a nen on the animals, and the infraction of the law is punishable by fine. This is the most effectual way to check cattle disease. In the seventh annual report of the Manchester and Salford Trades Council, which has just been issued, allusion is made to the effect of the recent ad- vance in the wages of persons employed in manufac- turing and agriculture. Except in the case of miners, the advance that has taken place has not, it is said, iujproved the social position of the operatives to any appreciable extent, the increase in wages being only equivalent to the enhanced cost of living. Mr. Calvert, who lately broke down seriously ill during the first performance of Shakespere's Henry V., at the Prince of Wales's Theatre, has now so far recovered that he has been able to address the audience, acknowledging the sympathy and kindness which had been shewn him. At the resumed inquest on Friday on the body of a child, to which a young woman gave birth in a. plan'ition near St. Agnes, three weeks since, the mother of the infant gave evidence to the effect that, dreading her father's anger, she left her home, and being unable to obtain admission at any house on her way to the Truro Union she went into the plantation, and there fainted, knowing nothing of what subse- quently occurred until some hours after, when she awoke and found a dead body lying at her feet. The jury exonerated the mother from criminal responsi- bility. An inquest was held at Liverpool, on Saturday, re- specting the death of a farm labourer, named Michael Lien nan, who died from injuries received during a fight at Hightown, on Sunday week. The jury re- turned a verdict of "Manslaughter" against a man named Crews, who is alleged to have kicked the de- ceased. The project for erecting this church has long been mooted, but from various causes its accom- plishment has been delayed. At last, through the liberality and personal exertions of Mr. Hugh Birley, M.P., the undertaking has been brought to its present stage, The site has been given by the Dean and Chap- ter, and the total cost of the building will be £6.400. JUDICIAL PENSIONS AND COMPENSATIONS. According to the Finance Accounts recently printed, the judicial pensions in Great Britain in the year ended the 31st of March last amounted to £47,763. and in Ireland £ 19,509. THE CONSERVATIVE CAJSOIPATJ: Foa EXETER ON THE LABOUR QUESTION.—Mr. J. 9. Johnson, one of the Conservative candidates for Exeter, speaking at a ploughing match dinner yesterday, referred at length to the labour question and kindred topics. He urged the importance of providing better cottages for the la- bourers, and remarked that recent events had brought them face to face with a great difficulty-namely, the scarcity of labour. He would not say anything in depreciation of those who endeavoured by artificial means to create a demand for higher wages, because. although they might be mistaken, they were actuated by benevolent and well-intentioned motives. The lawt of political economy Were inflexible, and any attempti to regulate them by artificial means must recoil upon those by whom the attempts were made. He denied that the recent rise in prices of coal and iron had pro duced any real prosperity. DEATri OF DR. CANDLISII. The Rev. Dr. Candlish, Principal of the New Col- lege, Edinburgh, and senior pastor of Free St. Genres Church there, di.-d at his residence, Melville- street, Edinburgh, at a quarter before 12 o'clock on Sunday night, in the Goth year of his age. Dr. Cand- lish was well known as a leader in the Free Church of Scotland, having taken a prominent position in the important debates during the" Ten years'conflict before the disruption of 1813, and since that time he may be said t,) havc guided in a great measure tlu coiuicils of the Free Church, and directed its line of policy throughout. In lS-il Dr. Candlish was all but appointed to the chair of Biblical Criticism in the University of Edinburgh, when his election was objected to in the House of Lords by Lord Aber- deen, on the ground that he. had preached in one of the parishes of Strathbogie in defiance of an inter- dict of the Court of Session, although with the authority of the General Assembly. A correspon- dence passed between Dr. Candlish and the Home Secretary, Lord Normanhy, on the subject, but the appointment was ultimately cancelled. Dr. Cand- lish was chosen Principal of the Free Church or New College, Edinburgh, on the death of Principal Cunningham in 1802. Up to within a recent period he preached every Sunday to a crowded congregation. By the action which he" took inreganl to the (!uestion of Union as brought before the last General Assem- bly, he may be said, by the conciliatory course he fol- lowed, to have prevented a second disruption. He was a powerful debater and eloquent preacher, while the works of which lie was the author, and which were chiefly theological, exhibit great intellectual power. He was Moderator of the Free Church General Assembly in 1861. Dr. Candlish's mother was the Miss Smith iniinortalisedby Burns as one of the "six proper young belles" of Mauchline.

MODERN FARMING. Mr. J. Mechi.'of Tiptrea-hall, Kelvedon, writes :1" follows to the Times :—"From long practice and ob- servation I venture to predict that the future of agri- culture, as regards the well feeding of the people and the profit of the farmer, will depend onmeat making and wheat and barley growing concurrently, especially on that extensive portion of the kingdom suitable for cereals rather than for pasture. Abundant evidencL" of this exists, especially in Norfolk, where land, not naturally rich, has been made a fertile means of feeding the people with bread, meat, and beer. This has net been effected by pasture, but by the purchase extensively of foreign agricultural produce for meat making. I quote, as an instance, by no means a solitary one, where, on a farm of 1,200 acres, in addition to artificial manures, about £-1,000 annually is paid for cake made from foreign grown linseed, amI from this is produced prolxdJly £ 3,000 worth of fat meat, and a proportionate ..quantity of manure to enrich the fields, and thus vastly increase the produce, not only of wheat, barley, and oats, but also of pulse, roots, clover, and other green crops suitable for meat making. Thus effect fol- lows cause for the farmers' profit and for the good of our country; for it is asserted by our most competent authorities (see Mr. Lawes in Royal Agri- cultural Society's Journal) that the best and cheapest manure results from making fat meat; but of course this system requires additional tenants' capital, or, which is the same in effect, a smaller area of holding in proportion to the usual capital, which may be taken as at present about £5 10s. to £6 per acre on the 47,000,000 of acres which form the tarmed area of the United Kingdom (see Board of Trade Returns). There is a vast margin for increase in this respect, for in Norfolk, Lincolnshire, and some other well-farmed districts, where much meat and corn are produced by stock-feeding and artificial manuring, from £15 to JB25 per acre is frequently the tenant's capital, and there landowners have also a large capital invested in suitable build- ings, drainage, roads, and other necessary improve- ments. It is not to pasture that we must look for the future (although that is c:1.pable of immense improve- ment by feeding the cattle on it with foreign pro- duce and by draining and other means), for, according to the Board of Trade Returns, the average yield of hay per acre per annum is at present under one ton. Foreign feeding stuffs for meat-making may be obtained in unlimited quantities witness the lists of imports of linseed, cottonseed, raespeed, and cakes of the same; also palm-nut cake, Indian corn, locust beans (containing 41 per cent. of sugar), peas, beans, barley, oats, and buck-wheat. The vast importations of foreign human and animal food and drink amounting probably to £70,000,000 annually, ought, after consumption, greatly to enrich our soil and increase its produce, and will do so when we come to our senses on the great utilization of sewage question. Mighty steam has changed many things, and will greatly alter and improve our agricultural practice both as regards landowners and their tenants, but it will be, naturally, a work of time. Dis- cussion and agitation will hasten progress and im- provement, and land will be brought into a more suitable condition for the investment of increased tenants' capital. The production of meat in thi3 country at present prices is estimated at about 32s. per acre, or ;76,00,),0,10 per annum. On this farm, and on many others which I could name, the an- nual prodllee of fat meat has been during 30 years £ 3 per acre. On such naturally poor land as mine, profit depends upon meat making and corn growing concurrently; for in unaided pasture its products would be at a minimum in quantity, quality, and price."

FATAL ACCIDENT.—Miss Anna Mary Pares, aged 47, eldest surviving daughter of the late Mr. T. Pares, of Hopwell Hall, Derby, has met with a shocking death at her residence, Bellair House, in Dorset. She was found by the family gardener lying on her back on the pavement near the garden of her house, having fallen from a three-storied window. She sustained concus- sion of the brain, and died shortly afterwards. It is believed she overbalanced herself at the window. The jury at the inquest fouud an open verdict. THE MARRIAGE OF THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH.—Tha St. Petersburghcorrespondent of the IndependanceBelye says that in the Russian capital they are busy prepar- ing for the marriage of the Duke of Edinburgh with the Grand Duchess Marie. In the workshops of Cron- stadt they are making standards bearing the Duke's arms. These consist of the royal arms of England bearing the Duke's special cognisance on a scutcheon, of pretence; this scutcheon bears the silver bend charged with cross gules and two anchors of the same. CAUTION TO PASSENGERS IK TRAMWAY CARS. —Dr. Lankester, the Coroner for Central Middlesex, has concluded an inquiry at the Twyford Arms, Twyford-street, Barnsbury, into the circumstances at- tending the death of Emily Rock, aged 16 years,' servant to a tradesman living in the Essex-road, Islington, and who expired from injuries received by being run over by a Favourite omnibus, after getting out of a tramway car, on Sunday, the 28th ult. The proceedings lasted several hours, and the court was I crowded to excess, several gentlemen belonging to' the London General Omnibus and Tramway Companies being present. Agnes Rock, of Upper Bemerton-street, Caledonian-road, mother of deceased, identified the body, and stated that when in the Great Northern Hospital, and perfectly sensible, deceased told her that she was getting out of a tramway car at Barns- bury-street, and before she could properly get out a. Favourite omnibus came up and knocked her down she had a child nearly two years old in her arms, which prevented her seeing the omnibus. Mr. Adam Young, house surgeon at the Great Northern Hospital, said deceased was admitted on the -8th ultimo, suffering from shock and great pain in the abdomen; she lingered some days, got worse, and expired on the 5th instant from peritonitis, after inflammation of the in- ternal organs, the post mortem examination shewing several external bruises. The jury returned the follow- ing verdict and resolutions That deceased expired from injuries caused by being knocked down and run over by an omnibus in the street, occasioned by acci- dental causes adding their opinion that great blaine was attached to the driver of the omnibus for not pulling up sooner, as they think he had ample tune to do so. They also attached blame to the conductor of the tramway car for not protecting the deceased when she was leaving the tramway car. EXCHANGE WITH THE UNITED STATES.—The New York Times has the following communication from Washington :—" In quoting exchange in foreign coun- tries it has never been the practice, except in deal- ings with Great Britain, to assume a par upon which a percentage is rated. The universal rule, except in this case, is to quote the money of this country against the money of other countries. Thus, on France and the franc countries, exchange is quoted on francs and centimes to the dollar; on Russia, cents to the thaler; on Frankfort, cents to the florin, and so on. In reforming our practice with Great Britain, the Secretary of the Treasury says it will be judicious to adopt the same method, quoting exchange either in dollars and cents to the pound sterling, or in pence and fractions to tht dollar. In the Spanish-American States and in China it is customary to quote exchange on Great Britain in pence to the doliar, but for the United States the Secretary would recommend quotations in dollars and cents to the pound sterling for the fol- lowing reasons -1. The variation in qui 'nif one cent to the pound is near enough to denot customary variations of exchange in the market, so that the use of fractions instating prices will be unnecessary. One cent variation corresponds very nearly to one-quar- ter per cent. in the exchange upon the fictitious par. 2. As the dollar of the United States is a gold coin, and of South America and China, a silver coin, a distinction in the unit for quoting exchange is for this reason desirable, since it would thus be understood, without further explanation, that a. quotation of dollars and cents to the pound referred to a gold dollar, and of pence and fractions to the dollar to a silver dollar. The law, while prescribing the close of the present year as the term for the discontinuance of the old rating of exchange, does not prohibit, but rather invites, an earlier change in the practice. In order to avoid the inconveniences of a postponement to the last moment, the Secretary recommends that the change be entered upon at once, and urges upon those in a position to guide in introducing the changes demanded by law the importance of acting promptly, so that by conference and interchange of views an agreement may be reached as to the most convenient time and manner of affect- ing them." It appears that the Act of Congress, to come into operation at the end of this year, fixes th< value of the pound sterling in United States gold coin, at 4 dollars 86 cents 6 £ mills, which is equal to the present conventional way of fixing the exchange at 109i per cent.
