A VACATION AT MERTHYR. (By the Saunterer.)—No. 2. SATURDAY NIGHT SCENES. WELL, gentle reader, I think we parted from one another last week just as I was issuing out from my "head-quar- ters," to perambulate High Street, with all the pomp and carelessness of a real exquisite which it was possible for me to assume. Of course I thought that my shining hat and Bay new kids, and my aristocratic bearing, would command me a free passage through the crowded streets, so that I should not again be shuffled about as I had been when coming from the railway station. Alas how short- sighted is man How little did I think as I went out that night that I should have been shoved and bobbed about so awfully as I was I have been always accustomed to spend a nice quiet Saturday night. If I went out in London, it was only to adjourn to the nearest inn for jibe purpose of enjoying my pint of half-and-half," and my emoke with the few old gents whom I met there every Saturday night, and with whom I had been for many years accustomed to discuss the topics of each week. After that I returned to my lodgings, and there sought the consolation of repose. Gracious me, how different in Merthyr! Such a bustle, and such a noise, and such a crowd, and such a mixture of different characters, and inch a medley of different languages, I never before saw or heard in all my life I met here the tidy, clean-looking old "Welshwomen from the country, with her tall, cone- shaped hat, her short well-bustled skirt, her little red shawl carelessly thrown over her shoulders, and her large basket hung on her arm, in which she carried the pro- visions which, I suppose she came into the town to pur- chase. Behind her came the athletic Scotchman, with the fat, good-humoured-looking countenance, and the pleasant beam of prosperity shining from his bright eyes. Here again I distinguished the stalwart, strong-looking Irishman, with his little black "dudeen" stuck in the corner of his mouth, his battered little hat cocked on the top of his skull, his strong, heavily-nailed boots tightly laced to his feet, and the ends of his white working trousers rolled half an inch above the fat calves of his legs. Pat seemed quite at home," and he sauntered along with his hands in his capacious breeches pockets with as much apparent ease as if he were parading the streets of Tralee, or rambling among the scenes of the once famous Donny- brook. Again I distinguished among those around me the sallow complexion, fair, straight-hair, and badly-shaped form of the emigrant German, as he, too, smoked his little pipe, and lounged lazily about the large "shops, staring listlessly at the different articles exhibited for sale in the windows. Here again I recognized the hoarse, de- bauched laugh of the unfortunate female, who was arrayed in that flashy dress purchased with the proceeds of one of the most abominable vices. She was chatting with ap- parent gaiety (if such lost ones can be gay) to a no less abandoned looking member of the male sex, who one could at once know to be of that class which is too lazy to work, and the members of which subsist only on what they can obtain by bad and dishonest means. Of those two characters, I regret to say, I met with a large number— too large, I think, for the peace and good character of the town of Merthyr. Many other classes of people I also noticed, and, as I strolled along the street, endeavouring to push my way through the great crowd, I was so as- tonished at this strange mixture of people and their languages, that 1 fell into a kind of half-dreamy mood, from which I was suddenly awakened by the music of a number of instruments playing away at a short distance before me. Having pressed on a little further, I at length found myself on the brink of a still more dense crowd, collected about the Market Square, in which there seemed to be two or three shows exhibiting. In the first place I could see the immense flashily painted front of a marquee, on which were painted representations of lions, tigers, leopards, buffaloes, wolves, and a number of other denizens of the forest," the commanding figure of the human creature being visible at intervals, engaged in "mortal combat" with one or more of the wild beasts. This, I at once knew to be a menagerie, but to whom it belonged I cannot say. Next to it stood a no less flashily painted concern, in the front door of which stood an important looking fat iran, with a waxen image in his hand, repre- senting a small lady, which he declared to be a master- piece fac-simile of the redoubtable wife of Tom Thumb, a declaration which the crowd received with evident marks of credence and applause. The steps leading to the entrance doors of both the exhibitions were crowded with people of all ages and sexes, who pressed with the greatest eagerness towards the inside. Now, as I had come out expressly to seek for something to entertain me, and as I rather like menageries and such things, I thought [ might as well "step inside" and so I shoved my hand into my pocket, pulled out a shilling, and allowed myself to be carried by the pressure of the throng towards the entrance to the menagerie. After considerable pushing and jostling and pressing about I at length found myself at the bottom of the stairs, surrounded by a most extraordinary cluster of people. At my left elbow stood a little fat puffing gentleman, about four feet and a half high, with an old leather skinned chubby visage very much re- sembling the profile of Bacchus on a china mug. He donned a beaver, of a very ancient build indeed, and from the top button-hole of his white waistcoat was suspended a thick black cord which held a rimless eye glass. He dis- played a considerable deal of the breast of his shirt, the collar of which reached up to his ears on each side, and showed that the washerwoman through whose hands it last went la- vished on it a goodly amount of the most approved blue. He carried a stick about as high as himself in his hand, and, when I first saw him, he was endeavouring to dislodge one of his under?,tanders from the hoops of a buxom damsel by his side. The poor little man was almost lost amid the I crowd collected arround him, and the manner in which he pnffed and floundered about from one side to the other could not fail to make the most stolid creature laugh heartily. In his effort to raise his foot to the lowest step of the stairs, he had struck unto the Amazon's crinoline, and was soon quite entrapped within its meshes. Really, he could not be in a worst j position in the maze at Hampton Court, than he mowwaaamnngthe "fashionable circles" at the foot of the menagerie. He endeavoured to take his foot out quietly at first, but found it was all in vain, as while he pulled in one direction, the girl, who was doing her best to move on- wards, kept pulling in the other, thus only encasing him the more helplessly within her "toils" and "strapping" him to her the more securely. At length, the little fellow lost all patience, and forgeting his respect for the weaker sex he mustered all his remaining strength, and gave his tiny limb a desperate pull. in order to try and release it. The result of this unfortunate experiment was, that the foot not only went through the hoop, but also through the skirt of the outer muslin dress, half of which was seen to pull off in a most vexatious manner. The amazon became quite inflamed with passion when she saw the havoc that had been committed, and, turning round she laid her hand on the large blue collar of his shirt, and pulling with all her might she succeeded in matching both wings" of that article from the neck of the horrified owner. Encouraged by this success of her first effort, she dashed the two parts of the dismembered shirt collar into the little fellow's face, follow- ing up the advantage she had thus gained by an investment with her masculine looking hand on his left cheek. This assault completely floored the poor victim, and, as he was too confused to be able to guard himself from the pressure of the crowd, I soon saw him stretched beside me on the ground, the ivory buttons of his waistcoat shining upwards under the glaring light in front of the show. The pressure was now very great, and those immediately behind the fallen hero, being unable tosave themselves, were precipitated over his plump body. Those bebind them followed the same ex- ample, and in a short time a large heap of human beings was piled on the spot, the unfortunate little origin of all forming the foundation. After much shouting and crying and screaming from the people around, and jesticulating from the man on the menagerie stage, the attention of the people | was attracted to the scene beneath the stairs, and as those on the steps seemed to become more interested in the result of the accident than in the effort to get inside, I found an opportunity to press forward, and I did so with the greatest possible despatch. I saw no more of the unfortunate little man with the laree shirt collar that night, but I think he must have been almost half dead when he was taken up (if he was ever taken up at all), and 1 am sure that if he ever recovers he will at once give an order to have his shirts made with smaller collars than those he wore before, and to have the ones already in his possession changed to a moder- ate size. Finding myself in side of the menagerie, I proceeded to re-arrange my totally disordered habiliments, and to wipe the perspiration off my brow, which had become uncomfor- tably warm during the pressure I endured outside. At length, having somewhat returned to myself, I found time to look around the place, and here I saw that the crowd was also large. Immediately before me stood a customer attired in a long tailed blue (an outer garment generally worn on Sundays by the old Irish peasantry), and with a liftle bit of about a five-year-old canbeen stuck on the summit of his cranium. In his right hand he sported a short bit of a thick stick, and with the left he clutched a large basket which, I saw, was full of newly purchased articles of food. Clinging to the tail of his long-tail blue was a puggy- looking little woman about eight and forty, dressed in a manner almost indescribable—so various were the colours of her garments and so curious the make. I at onee recog- The little woman seemed terribly frightened by the exhi- bition before her, and she clung to the coat tails of her better-half, bagging of him in a most energetic manner not to go nearer to the "wild bashtes Arra, hould off Katty, exclaimed the Hibernian, "an' none o' your nonsense. Sure dont you see the craythurs is kotched in their cages, an' divil a bit o' harm they could do us at all, at all. Come on, amoch, an' let us get the worth of our shillin'. Katty seemed to rally, and looking around her she began to believe that the "craythurs" were really "kotched. She, therefore, murmured no more, but followed in the foot- steps of her courageous but antiquated Romeo, still, how- ever, keeping a tight clutch on the "long-tail blue. "0 Jabus, Katty, look at that bashte, said the husband as they arrived opposite the den in which the large tiger was confined, there's a monster. Begorra that's like a big ugly cat with the spotted faver Och,- said the highly terrified Katty, that's a tiger as sure as I am a livin' woman this day, for I used to see a picthur o' the brute hung up in my masthur's drawing room when I was a livin' in Clonmel, which, God forgi' me, for ever leavin'. Now Katty allana, said Pat, Shureyou're not sorry for leavin' ould Ireland wid me, are you ? Shure if you're goin' to go on in this way we'd better go out at wonce. Och, inusha, God bless you an' do come, Pat, answered the woman, "faith I'm all on pins while I'm here and I don't see what use it '11 do us at all, at all. Come on avick." The disappointed Hibernian gave a very reluctant assent, and giving a kind of farewell glance to the place around, he adjusted his caubeen and pushed his way back towards the door. There was no doubt that Patrick had been put in a passion by the obstinate fear of his wife, although he acquiesced in her wishes with such apparent alacrity and good humour. As he ascended the steps to take his departure. I could see that bis face was flushed with suppressed ire, and I, for one, would not like to be the person to insult the Hi- bernian that night, especially while he had his sprig of shillelagh in his hand. When Pat had gone from my gaze like a beautiful (?) dream," I commenced to stare at the wild creatures caged around me, and occupied myself thus for about half an hour. I don't intend here to enter into any description of the forms, features, habits, or habitats of these wild beings, as such can be found in any work on natural history already published, and as, I suppose, most people know as much of these wild beasts as I do myself—a very good reason why I should say nothing more about them I noticed nothing further of a more than ordinary character inside the mar- quee and, after peeping critically into every cage in the place, and asking some as learned questions as I could fish out of my cranium from the different keepers, I strolled out again not a bit more of a naturalist than I was when going in. The crowd outside was now greatly diminished, as very few were there except such as, probably, did not know much about nice inviting suppers and warm comfort- able beds, and who during there lives had breathed a good deal more of the night air than of the healthy atmosphere of daylight. After cautiously picking my steps down the rickety stairs, and fairly landing myself on terra firma, I took out my cis-ar case, lit another Havanna, and strolled further down the street. I had not proceeded very far when I witnessed a scene which showed me how abandoned are some poor creatures of this world what brutes they make of themselves by their passion for bad beer and worse gin; what bad ex- amples they show to their children and how much more of their Saturday night's pay they spend among their companions in the beer shop, than among those far more entitled to their earnings—namely, their poor, suffering, neglected, and, perhaps, half naked and half starved families. Sprawling against the wall, in all the abandon- ment of beastly intoxication, and scarcely conscious of the world about him, lay a sottish looking, dirtily-clad, middle- aged man, at whose shoulder stood a poor-looking, ragged, and, also, very dirty little boy, apparently about twelve years old, and who called the prostrate drunkard his "father." Father," said the little fellow, tremblingly, and in scarcely audible accents, "come home, father my mother sent me after you as she is not able to come out herself. Do, father, come home with me Home," answered the inebriate, with a terrible oath, your mother and you may go and be d d I'll go home when I like Go along you—who sent you after me ? By G— I'll make you and her pay for this, if she don't let me alone Go home yourself The poor little degraded child trembled from fear and cold, for the night was very chilly and, as I walked away, disgusted with the beastly exhibition I had just seen, I could hear the little fellow's piteous whinings, mingled with his timorously reiterated entreaties to his brutal father to go home, and the plasphemous answers and threats of that abandoned wretch 0, Humanity, how degraded cans't thou be made 0, Passion, what a power dos't thou possess over man What a fatal weapon art thou in the hands of the wicked one, for the working out of his vile ends 0, Ye who devote yourselves to God's service, why do ye not exert yourselves more energetically for your depraved brethern ? 0, ye ministers, and priests, and monks, and preachers, and ye who profess to teach the wori of God—where rest ye on a Saturday night, and why are ye not oftener seen out in the streets watching out for such cases as I have described making efforts to reform such wretches as I have spoken of speaking words of comfort and consolation to such unfortunate children and such sickly, forlorn wives as are in numbers in our towns and cities and by your knowledge and advice teaching to poor fallen creatures the evil of their ways and the guilt thereof ?" Alas! I fear ye prefer your own comfortable homes and warm beds on a Saturday night to the exposing of yourselves to the dangers and privations of the streets, and the unpleasantness of the night air But, perhaps, some of you must be excused as ye are probably on that night preparing or rehearsing your sermon for the morrow! But, my superior friends, if you are really anxious to faith- fully fulfil your vocations, and carry out truly the proposed work of your lives, I think you may well prepare your sermons and rehearse them on some other night of the week, and you may, perhaps, do much good by practising a little self-denial on the Saturday night, by seeking out for and endeavouring to console some of your fellow beings around you, who are sadly in want of consolation But, my dear reader, I am becoming a little philanthro- pical, and, perhaps, you may not much care for that sort of stuff. I must, therefore, pass on, and express myself profoundly satisfied with all the men of God" of the present day, amongst whom there are, beyond doubt, a large number of excellent, hard-working, unselfish, good and faithful servants," though there may also, perhaps, be some amongst them who prefer, sometimes, to bury their talents —especially on a Saturday night! After proceeding a little further, I turned down a bye street, and in one of the houses there I witnessed a scene which formed, indeed, a very striking contrast to the one described above. Approaching a neat-looking little cottage, the front door of which was open, and from which a red, warm-looking light issued, I was somewhat startled by the screams of a young child, who, I conjectured, was receiving some applications of the birch from an offended parent. Here, however, I was wrong, and I soon found I was led into a mistake by forming a rash conclusion in consequence of some reminiscences which I still entertained of my younger days Arriving opposite the door I threw a side- glance into the house, and—such a homely scene as I there witnessed The door opened on a neatly flagged kitchen, at the upper end of which a large fire blazed in a nice clean grate. A dresser stood alongside, well filled with shining delf and china, and brightly polished tin vessels. At one side of the fire sat a man rather beyond the middle age, who was smoking a long white pipe. The man wore no coat, and sat—or rather squatted—in a large straw arm- chair, with his legs akimbo, and his fine ruddy face enjoy- ing the full heat from the blazing fire. On his fine, big, English-looking head he wore a dark house cap and, over him on the mantlepiece I could notice a bright pewter measure, which I conjectured contained something "beery." Were it not for the appearance of only middle-class luxury that was evident about the house, one might take the old chap in the chair for a specimen of the fine old English gentleman" so celebrated in song—and, I think, there are a good many "fine old English gentlemen" not half so happy in their own homes—although they may have riches and every thing riches can afford-as was that man in his own kitchen that night! His face beamed with inward satisfaction, as he watched the curling fumes of blue smoke that issued out of his mouth, and from the head of the long pipe, as he took each whiff. I could also, however, notice that from time to time a peevish little twitch clouded his open brow, and there was then a slight im- patient-looking inclination of the head to the other side of the kitchen, from which the youngster's screams, which I had heard before, still proceeded. Looking in the direction, I soon discovered the reason of the cries, together with the little fellow from whom they proceeded. In the opposite corner of the Kitchen was a large tub, at the side of which stood a busy-looking matron, and within which screamed a plump little child of about three or four years of age. The mother—for I considered the matron to be so—held down the child with her left hand, whilst with the right I could see that she adminis- tered on its body a goodly lather of soap. The poor little fellow plunged about in the cold water in the tub with his eyes shut, with his mouth widely opened, andjiis little hands firmly clutching his mother's arms to try and prevent her from putting on any more of the lather or sprinkling over its body any further doses of the cold water His cries were such as little children in similar circumstances always utter—and such as we ourselves (I mean big people) have uttered long before this—although, I confess, I forget all about it now, and if any one was to accuse me of such bad conduct when I was a "younker I'd tell them indig- nantly, they were wrong, for that I was always the quietest child of my age, never crying for anything, but always happy and cheerful—even in the washing tub Well, after gazing on this happy scene for as long a time as due decorum permitted me, and having fully compared it in my own mind with the far different incident I had previously wit- nessed, 1 settled my beaver on my head, and as my cigar was now almost smoked away, I bethought me of returning to my lodgings, and trying to get to bed. On my way back to the inn the town was quiet enough, it being now rather late. I, therefore, arrived at my tem- porary abode without any further incident occuring worth notice. On to-morrow, I intend to pay a visit to your cha- pels or churches, and try how matters are conducted there. Should there be anything noteworthy in them, I shall tell it to you next week, and in the meantime kind reader I will just wish you au revoir

BLACKWOOD PETTY SESSIONS. JUNE 8.-(Before J. Davies and H. G. Marsh, Esqs.) Assault.—Elizabeth Richards v. Ann Humphries.—Com- plainant. in a rambling way, detailed how defendant had assaulted her at Tredegar without any cause.—Defendant said they were neighbours, and complainant had a bad tongue. Mrs. Richards called her bad names, and she could not help striking her. This the complainant denied, and defendant having no witnesses, as well as ad- mitting the assault, was fined 6d. and costs. Assault.—Lewis v. Marsden and Marsden v. Lewis.— This was another row at Tredegar. Lewis is a young girl and Marsden a married woman. A dispute had occurred, and Lewis being possessed of a very wild tongue, fired away at the quarrel in English. To-day she could not speak English she said, and the hearing was conducted in Welsh. Lewis said she was coming down the street when Vlarsden ran out of her house and struck her. Marsden, who bears a good character, and is well known, complained that it was impossible to live near Lewis, that Lewis called her a wh-, and created no end of disturbances with neighbours living near her.—The magistrates dismissed the case. The great Ebbw Vale Row Settled at last.-Cocklin v. Nester, Nester v. Cocklin, Cocklin v. Tomey, and Tomey v. Cocklin.—After many adjournments, this great case has at length been disposed of.—Mr. Plews was "ambassador extraordinary for Tomey, and Mr. Harris for Cocklin.— By arrangement all the cases were heard together.—Mrs. "if I »' • X 4.1. I did not ask him to leave his wife. My husband hit him with the brick, Did not see my husband or my sister's husband put him on the wall and beat him. I was in my house by my pantry door. He had his summons against me on a Friday, and I had mine on a Saturday.—Honora Cunningham said I live four dcors from Cocklin, and re- member the 4th of May after we got back from Tredegar sessions, I heard a quarrel between Ellen Cocklin and Toomey. He had his hands in her hair, and took him off her. I saw a mark on her head. I saw no more after wards.—Cross-examined by Mr. Plews: I was at Black- wood a month to-day when this row began. I was sitting down in the house. His hands were on her hair. Do not know where her hands were. They were not in her mouth, as she could not put them in. The defendant struck Carty and complainant and her husband were there. They were pushing each other.—Alice Dibble said I am the wife of Samuel Dibble, and was talking to Mrs. Cocklin. Mrs. Cocklin's little boy was playing ball, and it rolled into Nester's house, who refused to give the little boy the ball. —Nicholas Cocklin: I am the husband of complainant. The day we returned from Tredegar sessions my little boy was playing ball, which went into Nester's house, where Toomey lodges. We struck each other. Toomey then went and hit my wife and pulled her hair out of her head. Toomey went for the police. He and I struck each other. —Cross-examined I had some bricks in my hands. If I had I would not deny it to the Bench. I was locked in the house, but got through the window when he bad hold of my wife's hair. I did not strike him with a brick, but I did fling it. It was before he had hit me after he called my wife bad names to my [face.—Mr. Plews ably reviewed the evidence, and called Patrick Toomey, v. Ellen Cocklin and A icholas Cocklin, who said I was at Tredegar on the 4th May. She threw a brick at me. He had a brick in his hand, and he threw it at me and hit me twice: I never put my hand on her hair. They were all at me at once. There were three bricks thrown at me, and I was hit on the head by one of them.—By Mr. Harris I did not see the boy come into the house for his ball. He did not come in while I was there. Witness's further evidence went to show that he was called bad names. He was not in six public-houses. Did not call at the Mountain Hare. -Mary Dunavan said I heard Mrs. Cocklin say she would take Patrick Toomey in the road with her. Patrick Toomey Patrick Toomey in the road with her. Patrick Toomey came out, and Ellen Cocklin and him were talking toge- ther. Nicholas Cocklin came out and saw them, and began to throw stones at Toomey. Mrs. Cocklin took her hus- band into the house and took the stones from him. He came out through the pantry window. He began at Toomey, and they altogether got him to the wall and began to beat him.-The magistrates dismissed all the rases. Affiliation. -Time an Objeet.-Police and other Trou- bles.-Eliza Dyke v. Thomas Llewellyn.-Mr. Rice Harris for complainant, and Mr. Plews for defendant.—Complain- ant said I am a single woman living with my father, a saddler, at Nantyglo. I had a child on the 23rd of April this year. I previously lived at the Boot Hotel, Aberdare, and lived there about three years and eight months. I first became acquainted with defendant there. He was in the police force at Aberdare. About twelve months last February he came from Dowlais. I was at my father's house then at Nantyglo. Defendant is in the police force at Dowlais. We went to Abertillery together. He came to see me on the 12tb of June last year. We went to Rhymney together. It was from what took place that day that I became pregnant. The impropriety took place at Nantyglo. Several improprieties afterwards took place. He is the father of my child.—Considerable evidence hav- ing been taken, Mr. Plews said he did not intend to call any witnesses. His client had evidently made a mistake in reckoning the months. Defendant was with her on the 12th of June, and not again until August. From June to April 25th is ten months and a fortnight, and not nine months and a few days, as his client said.-Such being facts, and time being the great object, the case was at once dismissed.—The following is the copy of a letter received by complainant from defendant Dowlais Police Station, Sept. 18th, 1865. Dear Love, I received your letter this morning, and was very sorry to hear that you was ill; but I can't make you out, you do seem so funny. When you went to the Boot you never sent one letter to me. You know that I was up at Nantyglo on Monday, June 12th, 1866. You have been a very long time till now before tell- ing me of it, but that is an old saying with you now to me. I am very sorry to hear it, and can tell you that you went to the Boot without telling one word to me about it, after what I told you. By your account you are three months in it. I shall be on day duty next Sunday, and therefore I can't come to meet you. I called at your brother George's yesterday, and they told me your father, mother, and Fred and Polly and Jenny were there on Sunday all day. They came in a trap. They were telling me that your mother is going to Swansea this week for the benetit of her health. I have not much reason to tell you.—Yours respectfully, J. LLEWELLYN.-Miss Dyke."

MERTHYR POLICE COURT. SATURDAY. —(Before E. J. Davies & David Davies, Esqrs. A Female Inebriate -Mary Riordan, a. woman with a child in her arms and two or three about her heels, was charged with being drunk and using indecent language in the streets on Wednesday evening last.-P.S. Thomas said that at about six o'clock in the evening, he saw the defend- ant drunk in the High-street, with a large crowd collected about her. She was making use of most beastly language, and threatening to strike some children who were round her, with stones. He sent her down Victoria-street towards her home, but she returned to the High-street and again ill- conducted herself in a similar manner. He was obliged to take her to the station.-The prisoner was fined 7s 6d in- cluding costs, and, in default of payment, she should go to gail for seven days. EXTRAORDINARY AND DISGRACEFUL CASE AT ABERDARE. The Magistrates now retired to a private room to hear a case which had occurred at Aberdare, and which was one of the most disgraceful that has ever come under our observa. tion. A man named Thomas O'Hearne, apparently about twenty five or twenty seven years of age. was charged with having committed a rape on two young children, one named Martha Griffiths, aged twelve years, and the other, sister, Sarah Anne Griffiths, aged nine The case of Martha was first heard, and on that child being examined she said;—I live with my father at Aberdare. The prisoner lodged with my father. On either a Monday or Saturday night, about six weeks ago, I was in bed with my father and sister. My sister's name is Sarah and she is younger than I am. My father had been drinking that night. The prisoner came into the bed where I and my sister and my father were. I was awake when he came to bed, but I had slept before that. The prisoner used to sleep in the same room as we slept in, but in another bed. He did not say anything when he came into bed, but he hurted me shocking with his hands. The witness went on to describe how the prisoner had shamefully and indecently assaulted her with his hands, and she first said that he did nothing more. She said that be remained in the bed all night, and did not leave it till abont five o'clock the fol- lowing morning. Her father was asleep at the time, and was not sober. He was lying at the foot of the bed. After some further questioning the poor child then stated that the prisoner still further assaulted her in a most cruelly criminal manner, from the effects of which she still suffered severely. She told her father about the affair next morn- ing. She did not make any noise at the time, but she could not state the reason why. The prisoner she said, committed a similar assault on her sister a couple of nights afterwards. William Griffiths, a puddler, was then examined. He said :-I am Martha Griffiths' father, and live at Aberdare. The last witness was twelve years old on the 15th of last month (May). On Saturday night, just six weeks ago (that was on the 5th of May). I had gone to bed some short time after midnight. The two little girls, my daughters, went to bed with me. I was quite drunk, as I was working very hard by myself all the week, and the little drop of beer I took quite overcame me. I was lying in the bottom of the bed, and I put my feet outside of Martha. The prisoner who covered me up, put my feet between the two girls, and when I moved them back again, he returned them to the same place. I did not know the reason at that time. When 1 awoke in the morning Martha told me that she could not sleep all night, as Tom O'Hearne had been coming to bed to her, and she was afraid. Again, on Tues- day morning the children told me they could not sleep the night before, as the prisoner had again been in the bed with them. I told the prisoner's mother about, and I think she told him. The mother said the children should have been dreaming. Dr. Evan Jones, of Aberdare, was examined as to the nature of the injuries sustained by the two little children, and his evidence went to show that the poor little creatures were in a most deplorable state, and that there was a dis- ease communicated to them which would, probably, remain with them during life, and extend to their offspring, if they should have any. He also examined the prisoner, who, he said, showed symptoms of a similar disease. P. C. Jennings was next called. He deposed In conse- quence of information I received I arrested the prisoner at the Market-house Ale and Porter Stores, at Aberdare, on yesterday. I told him he was charged with committing a rape on William Griffiths' two little daughters, and also with imparting to them other serious injuries. He said, Who can prove it ?" I took him to the station, and he continued to say "They cannot blame me for this, it was the oldest girl injured me in the first place." I asked him what oldest girl" he meant. He said, It is a sister of the other two she is about fifteen years of age she has been travelling with a shooting gallery that was in Aber» dare, etc. Martha Griffiths was here re-called, and in answer to some questions from Mr. Lewis she said The name of my eldest sister is Maryanne Griffiths. She once lived in our house, but she has gone away with a shooting gallery. She went away last week. My oldest sister and I slept together since the prisoner was at me. Dr. Jones was also re-called, and he said it was possible that the disease might have been communicated from her sister if they slept together, but that was a very rare thing. The Father: Mr. Jones knows my eldest girl a long time, and he can say what sort of a girl she was. She had the best of a character in Aberdare, and I can get fifty good characters for her if it is required. I can also send for the girl, as she is with her master and mistress in Devonshire at present. Mr. Jones I cannot speak to that. The Father: Sergeant Matthews here knows her these many years in Aberdare, and he can speak for her, THE SECOND CASE was then considered, in which the prisoner was charged with a similar assault on Sarah Anne Griffiths, a handsome child of nine years of age. When the little girl appeared to give her evidence she seemed so young and innocent that doubts were entertained as to whether she understood the grave nature of the oath she was about to take. Mr. E. J. Davies, therefore, asked her was it a good or bad thing to tell a lie ? The little girl answered that it was not good. Mr. E. J. Davies: Do you know where good people go to after death ? The little child To Heaven, sir. Mr. E. J. Davies Where do bad people go ? Witness To hell, sir. Mr. Lewis Do you go to school ? Witness: Yes, sir. The child was then sworn, and she said I live with my father in Aberdare, and I know that man (the prisoner). I think it was on a Saturday night the prisoner went to my sister, and on the Monday afterwards he came to me. My father was in bed with us when the prisoner came to me. (This item in the evidence was afterwards contradicted by the witness's sister and also her father, both of whom said the father was at his work on the Mon- day night.) The witness, in terms similar to those used by her sister, described the rape committed on her by the prisoner, and further said he held her down in the bed till she was just dead. She, too, had been very bad ever einn that r)i Jennings were again examined, and gave evidence some- what similar to that given by them in the other case. As an excuse for not dismissing the prisoner from his house when he committed the first assault, the father, Wm. Griffiths, said that he knew the prisoner could not get any other lodgings, and he, therefore, did not like to be hard on him, or to kick up a bother I The prisoner said he did not wish to ask any questions, but he had something to say for himself. His defence was to be heard on the Tuesday following at Aberdare, to which court the case was adjourned. [For conclusion see Aberdare police report.] An Ostler in Trouble.—Wm. Williams, who had once been a horse dealer in good circumstances, but had latterly been a stableman or ostler, was charged with cutting off and stealing a horse's tail. Several people in Merthyr and Penydarren turn their horses out to graze at night in the Penydarran fields, and on Friday morning last many of them had lost the greater part of their tails. One horse, beloning to Benjamin Evans, a labourer on the farm, had lost a large quantity of hair, and the stump of the tail had been mutilated. It was discovered that the prisoner had sold about 91bs. of horsehair to a marine store dealer in the town, named Reiley, and from it two tufts were picked out and identified as having belonged to the horses of Mr. Evans, and Mr. John Giles, ale and spirit merchant. The prisoner was remanded till Monday, as some nine horses have had their tails docked and disfigured. The prisoner denied the offence, and said he was not near the field that night. Disgraceful.-Ann Davies, who was discovered by P.C. Morris prostituting herself in the public streets, was com- mitted to Swanse gaol for 21 days' hard labour. Drunk.—John Woods, for having been drunk and dis- orderly in Graham-st., was committed for 7 days. A Fracas.-A case in which John Lloyd was charged with cutting and wounding Daniel Williams, was remanded to Aberdare. The charge arose out of a fracas at the Rail- way Tavern, Cwmbach, where the prisoner threw a tumbler at the prosecutor. There were several publicans summoned and fined for having their houses open during hours prohibited by law. MONDAY.—(Before J, C. Fowler, and T. J. Evans, Esqrs.) Unfortunate Prize Fighters.-Two very closely-shaven members of the pugilistic confraternity were brought out from the dungeons to answer a charge that they did assemble on Sunday morning for the purpose of pummel- ling one another without mercy, and thus causing a breach of "blessed peace." One individual, who had his eyes painted black," and the appearance and shape of whose nose at once showed that the claret" had been often ex- tracted from that noisy organ, called himself John Charles, and was muffled up to the ears with an immense piece of smutted stuff resembling a "neckerchief." The other pugilist wore a phiz of divers hues, which showed that be had not escaped scot free" from the encounter with Johnny, and called himself John Edwards. The ring had been pitched, the seconds chosen, the curiosity of the crowd excited, heavy bets invested," and all the necessary in- gredients of the prize fight arranged, when Sergeant Howlett was spied looming in the distance," and steering towards the "charmed spot." The combatants, however, fought five rounds, and seeing that the peacemaker was rather adjacent they pulled on their wearables and courage- ously skedaddled. They were, however, afterwards cap- tured, and the only excuse they then offered for their endeavour to break the peace was, that they had not finished the fight, and were to begin again on Monday The worthies were told to find sureties to the amount of X20 for their good conduct for the next six months. At the end of the court a host of customers similar to the Johnies pre- sentei themselves as sureties. Other Candidates for the"P.R."—J ohn Brien and Charles Finn were summoned for being drunk and riotous on Satur- day evening. There could not have been a much greater contrast between the David and Goliah of ancient renown than there now existed between those two worthies. The Irishman, Brien, must certainly have stood six feet in his stockings," and for build" and broad shoulders he seemed quite a paragon. On the other hand Finn would not have received a single backer" among any pugilistic circle, so lean, small, and un-sprinky looking did he seem. How- ever, it seems he has pluck enough, for when Goliah offended him on Saturday evening he showed himself ready enough to wire in and square points with the big 'un. Sergeant Thomas chanced to get a glimpse of the combat- ants, and he interrupted their exhibition and marched I them off to "quod." The worthies were now mulcted in 5s. each, including costs, or, if they or their purses preferred j it they could get cheap board and lodging for seven days. An Eccentric Wish.-A very fat and portly nymph-du- pave was charged with breaking a square rrt glass in a street lamp opposite the Dynevor Arms on Sunday morning at a rather early hour. P.C. Williams was "on duty in the street when he espied the nymph "rolling up towards him. It would seem she had some reason to be offended with the street lamp, for without any provocation she raised a stone and sent it whirling through the glass. She then "took to her heels" up the street followed by the policeman. As, however, she saw more than one path before her, and was puzzled which to choose in order to be safest on, her pace was somewhat staggering, and ere long the pursuer had her in his clutches. He locked her safely in the Market-square "receiver," and from thence she issued to be presented in court. When asked the reason why she broke the lamp the female replied that she wished to have a spell in Cardiff "jug." Her wish was com- plied with, but the scene was shifted to Swansea, where she may now "rest and be thankful," for ten days, with an opportunity of occasionally "labouring hard" for the good of that place. A Drunken Husband.-An individual, named Thomas Murphy, who, it appears, does not love his wife to that extent which has been called "not wisely but too well." was charged with being drunk and riotous at Dowlais on Saturday night. P.C. Melhuish saw the worthy striking his wife two or three times, and he told him to desist. The policeman then proceeded on his rounds," but had not gone far when he again saw Murphy laying on the un- fortunate wife, who called to have him arrested. Murphy was then taken into custody, and was now fined 7s. 6d. in- cluding costs. He called out stoutly for his "Mary Jane," that, it appears, being the cognomen of his wife, but for sometime no answer came. At length he called for "the money," and a female voice was then heard to say "here it is." The money was accordingly paid. Another Inebriate.—William Martin, an itinerant hawker, was charged with being rather spirited in High-street on Sunday evening, in consequence of which he caused some injury to a carriage belonging to Mr. J. T. Williams. As an excuse the prisoner alleged that he had only just come into the town," and, we suppose, as a housewarm- ing," he took a couple of pints. The excuse, however, was not accepted, and Bill was fined 10s. It's enough, faith," said the muicted-one as he paid the cash. Affectionate Neighbours.—Margaret Evans summoned Thomas Howles, and Eliza his wife, for an assault. The row arose about some pigs and ducks, but as defendants wished to produce witnesses the case was adjourned till Saturday. The Charge of Cutting Horses Tails.- William Williams was brought forward on remand charged with cutting the tails of several horses. The case were conducted for the prosecution by Mr. James, and the prisoner was defended by Mr. Plews. The case of Mr. B. Evans was first heard. -Mary Evans, the plaintiff's wife, was examined, and said that on Thursday night last she saw her husband's horse left out in the field at Penydarran where there were some other horses. On Friday morning it was discovered that the horses tail had been cut off. Part of a horses tail was here produced, and she swore it once belonged to her horse, because it was white and yellow.Michael Kyley, a marine store dealer, said he bought the tail produced from prisoner, and he had been in the habit of buying such things from the man for several months passed. He gave him Is. per pound for the hair, and all the tails he (witness) bought from prisoner, with this one, weighed 9 lbs.—P.C. Harding, who arrested the prisoner, said that Williams told him he got the horses tail from an animal belonging to his master, Mr. Charles Davies, a horse dealer.—Mr. Plews then inti- mated his intention of proving an alibi in this case, and, after addressing the court for his client, he said he wished to examine some witnesses.—Mr. James objected to such evidence. He submitted that the case for the prosecution had been made out prima facie. and the question was, therefore, one for a jury and not for the Bench.—Mr. James's objection was overruled, and Charles Davies was examined. He said he was the prisoner's master, and on the Thursday evening in question Williams took tea in his house about five o'clock. He remained about the place till nine o'clock, and then went to bed with another man in the house. He (witness) believed prisoner did not leave the house during the night, and he saw him at breakfast early next morning-—John Jackson swore that he slept with prisoner the whole of Thursday night, and he did not think he could have gone out without he (witness) knowing it. He was sure prisoner was in the bed with him all night.— The Bench said that they should send the prisoner for trial at the next quarter sessions at Cardiff.—Another charge was then preferred against Williams for cutting the tail of a horse belonging to Mr. John Giles.—Eevidence of a like nature to the above having been given, prisoner was also sent for trial on this charge.-A third charge was then made against prisoner for cutting the tail of a horse belong- ing to Mr. Thomas Williams.—On this the prisoner was also sent for trial. WEDNESDAY.—(Before J.'C. Fowler, Esq.) A Hero of the Cleaver in Trouble -A big, jolly-looking butcher's man named Phillip Harding, was charged with assaulting P.C. Davis while in the execution of his duty, on the 19th inst. Phill was out for a spree on Tuesday evening, and got somewhat too noisy in the Market Tavern. The landlord was obliged to send for the police to have the "cleaver" turned out, but when P.C. Davis proceeded to do so, defendant hit him a thumper on the chest, the consequence being that he was now fined 10s. and costs, which he paid.. A Troublesome Female.—A. miserable, badly dressed, and very aged nymph-du-pave, named Ellen Sullivan, was misconducting herself in Pontstorehouse, when P.C. Ste- vens took her into custody. She was sent to Swansea gaol for 21 days. Youthful Rioters. -Willi- Moss, a very unwashed looking youth, was summoned for being drunk and riotous on the 19th inst., and was fined 5s. and costs in default, seven days in gaol.—Elias Jones, another dirty and ragged gamin, was fined 10s. and costs, for endeavouring to pre- vent the constable from taking his "pal Billy into cus- tody in default, he should go to gaol for ten days. Both worthies went to quod." r "Gulled" in the "Celestial City.A red-whiskered sinker from Aberaman, who called himself James James, summoned a battered-looking, but rather large nymph from China, for stealing from him XI lis. lgd. The pro- secutor came into Merthyr on last evening, and finding himself rather amorously inclined, he picked up with the nymph, and went with her to her celestial abode. He had peeled off," and was just beneath the sheets with his inamorata, when a thundering rap" came to the front door. The modest female became frightened, and swore that if her husband caught her in her present posi- tion she would be "murthered." She rushed downstairs to see who knocked, and while she did so, complainant said she also contrived to whip away" his trowsers, and take the money from its pocket. She denied the charge, how- ever, and said it was another woman, who was sleeping in the same room with some other "chap" that "fingered the cash." P.C. Williams arrested the prisoner, but found no money on her. The nymph was committed for trial, and she seemed to look upon the whole affair as a good bit of fun. An Irish Row. —Catherine Loughlin, a pale-faced daugh- ter of Erin, summoned Julia Cotter, another native of the Green Isle," for an assault. It seemed that a row oc- curred between the two natives, and defendant struck com- plainant a blow on the forehead with a stone, causing a bump there. Julia was fined 2s. 6d. and costs, or in default, she could go to Swansea gaol for seven days. The heroine preferred the solitude of the gaol, and she went there. An Absentee Defendant.-John Butter, who did not answer when called for, was charged by a cock-nosed little Irish girl. of the breed of the Sullivans, for an assault. the little one interfered to save her "ma." Defendant then turned on complainant, and gave her a violent kick in the abdomen, from which she suffered for a long time. The case was adjourned till Saturday for the appearance of defendant. An Irish" Account Book."—Mr. Patrick Boyle, the accountant" who kept his books with chalk on a bit of a plank, appeared to-day to prosecute Catherine Murphy for embezzling £2 3s. 2jd. of his money. The 2 evidence was not sufficient to warrant a conviction, as his Worship did not wish to rely on the book," and the case was again adjourned that some of the persons who paid money to the prisoner, which she did not return, might be produced as witnesses.

ABERDARE POLICE COURT. TUESDAY.—(Before J. O. Fowler, Thos. Wayne, Esqs., and Capt. R. T. Roberts.) Trespassers.—William Kenrick was fined Is with Id. damage and 3s. 6d. costs, for trespassing on lands in the occupation of Mr. Bruce Price, near the Duffryn wood, Mountain Ash.—William Rosser and Edward Davis were similarly punished for a similar offence. A Batch of Inebriates. —Rees Jones, for being drunk and riotous at Aberdare, on the 5th inst., was fined 10s. including costs, or in default, seven days in Swansea gaol. — Robert Davies and Robert Bevan were similarly mulcted for a like offence.—John Lewis was fined 7s. 6d. and costs for being drunk and wanting to fight with another man, 011 Saturday morning, the 9th inst.—John Davis, for being drunk and riotous on the 11th inft., was fined 10s. includ- ing costs.—Richard Jones, for a similar offence, was fined 7s. 6d. including costs.—David Morris, for being drunk and beating his wife on the night of the 7th of May, was fined 10s. including costs. Charge of Assault.-Elizabeth Bowen summoned Sarah Smith for an assault. It seemed that defendant was beat- ing another woman, when Mrs. Bowen interfered to stop the fight. Defendant then turned on the peace-maker and rewarded her for her good intentions by striking her on the left eye. —Fined 10s. and costs in default, she should go to Swansea gaol for seven days. A Fortunate Inebriate. —John Edwards was charged with wilfully damaging a knocker, the property cf Mr. T. H. Evans. landlord of the Cardiff Castle Hotel. On Satur- day night the defendant was out on a spree with some other jollificators," and they called at the Cardiff Castle about half-past twelve, and inquired for lodgings. The door, however, was not opened for them, and the defendant continued to call for admittance and try to shove in the door. The landlord sent for the police, and when they ar- rived he opened the deor. The defendant then rushed on Mr. Evans, and was about to pay him for the lodgings," when he was prevented by the constable. Mr. Evans now discovered that the knocker had been strained to one side, and he had some difficulty in replacing it in its original place. He did not, however, wish to prosecute, and the defendant was accordingly discharged with a caution. Important Cattle Plague Case. -Rees Beynon was sum- moned for having, on the 31st of May, unlawfully brought three calves into this county without having them examined and certified to be healthy by one of the county inspectors. —Mr. Simons appeared for the defendant.—P.C. Jennings was examined, and said that on Thursday night, the 31st ult., at about half-past ten o'clock, he met the defendant bringing three calves towards the slaughter-house. He asked him for the certificates, and defendant gave him the ones produced. (They were found to date only from Neath but that was some miles within the boundary of the county).-Supt. Wrenn was then examined and said: On the 29th of May Mr. Beynon was fined here for a similar offence, and he came and asked me what he would do in future. 1 told him he was simply to obey the rules, and he would not get fined; and that, if he was bringing any cattle into Glamorganshire he should get the inspector to irspect them on the borders of the county. He asked me if it would do for him to have them inspected at Neath, and I said "no," as he had then arrived fourteen miles within the county, and the offence was thus committed.— Cross-examined by Mr. Simons: I know cattle brought into Glamorgan which were inspected by the Glamorgan inspector in Carmarthen. I have several such certificates. —Mr. Simons Have you been in the habit of receiving certificates from the cattle inspector at Neath for cattle brought into this county ? Witness Never, that I am aware of.—Mr. Simons Have your officers. -Witness I don't know, if they have they did so without my sanction.—Mr. Simons Have you -sent the Inspector down to examine cattle at Neath?—Witness: Certainly not. -Mr. Simons Have Dot you, yourself, com- municated to Mr. Nicholas, directing him to go to Neath to inspect cattle there ?—Witness Sometime ago they were doing those sort of things, and I told Mr. Nicholas I could not help such things, as we should mind our own district. I told him to go and meet the Irish cattle train, and leave us right in this division whatever they did at Neath.—Mr, Simons Do you know Mr. Morgan, the pork butcher at Merthyr ? Did he get his things inspected at Neath ?— Witness No, not that I know of.—Mr. Simons: Have not you communicated to Mr. IN icholas telling him to go to Neath and inspect those cattle ?—Witness here hesitated, but Mr. Simons said something about having such a letter as that referred to in his possession, and he repeated the question. Witness: All I did was what I have before told you. —Mr. Simons Come now, has not this been done re- peatedly?—Witness: No, certainly not.—Mr. Simons: Has it ever been done with any one but Mr. Morgan ?— Witness I don't know.—Mr. Simons Was there any exception in Mr. Morgan's case ?—Witness 1 don't know. —Mr. Simons How is it that Mr. Morgans came to be inspected in this way ?—Witness I don't know; 1 don't remember the case at aIL-Mr, Simons: Do you know whether this train stops at all or not once it leaves Carmar- then till it comes to Neath ?—Witness I don't know what the arrangements are now, but they have stopped below the county.—His Worship Do you mean the Irish cattle train?—Witness No, the other train—Mr. Simons: You have been receiving the certificates of Inspector Thomas, at Neath, and receiving them here without Qomplaint ?- Wit. ness I have not, nor have any of my officers done it to my knowledge. I wrote to Mr. Thomas telling him that cattle coming there should have certificates, and that a certificate from that place would not do here.—Mr. Simons Did not you tell Beynon if they were inspected by Superintendent Thomas at Neath that would do ?—Witness Certainly not 1 told him quite the contrary—that they should be inspected on the borders of the county. I told him that in the presence of Sergeat Matthews. I told him distinctly that the Inspector at Neath would not do.—Mr. Simons: Do you know a certain man in Wales who imports a large quantity of cattle in here? Have not his cattle been always inspected at Neath ?—Witness I don't know that. There was a ccnviction against him for breaking the cattle plague regulations at Merthyr.—Mr. Simons Answer my ques- tion distinctly ?—Witness I don't know I have no recollection.—Mr. Simons Do you know of no cattle brought in with a certificate like this ?—Witness I don't know. I know that this man was convicted for a breach of the cattle plague orders, but I forget the offence.-His Worship Where do the certificates generally come from when the cattle have entered Glamorgan?—Witness From Inspector Thomas.—His Worship: He goes up to the borders I suppose?—Witness 1 suppose he makes his own arrangements for doing so.—Mr. Simons: I will show you at once that there is never an inspection made anywhere except at Neath. The railway company is responsible for this, as Neath is the first place they stop at after leaving Carmar- then, and there they are inspected.—His Worship Don't they stop at Laugher?—Ivlr. Simons No, sir. There may be exceptions in this way, but it is almost the universal rule observed, and I shall prove to you that nearly the entire of the cattle brought into the district have been in- spected in about the same way as those have be-in-some by the county and some by the borough inspector.—His Worship It seems to me it is a question of fact-whether this particular train had stopped anywhere on the borders of the county where the cattle might be inspected before they entered in. If not, I think the responsibility then devolves on some other person.—Mr. Simons: We can show that at once.-His Worship Then, that is necessary to be proved.—Mr. Simons I understand, sir, that the train in question stopped at Llanelly, in Carmarthen, some miles in that county, and then it came on to Landore, but it stopped there only a few moments or so. There is, how- ever a vary substantial stoppage at Neath, and there the inspection is made.-His Worship: I think it would be desirable to ascertain what the practice of the Petty Ses- sions at Neath is with regard to inspections. If the magis- trates have been in the habit of considering Neath the proper place for inspection, I think we should take notice of that fact, and make arrangements here accordingly. —Mr. Simons: 1 think 1 might leave that to your Worship to enquire about.-His Worship: I will enquire about it, and then bring back the information as soon as possible.—Mr. Simons: The object of all those enactments is to adopt every possible precaution against the spread of the disease, and, at the same time, not to interfere with the despatch of those cattle.—His Worship: Certainly; and I think the local Magistrates at Neath are the fit authorities to know what ought to be the local arrangements down there. The case was then adjourned for a week, in order that his Worship might ascertain the arrangements of the Patty Session Magistrates at Neath as to the inspection of cattle there. Van Quaterlege again.-This "great unknown" was again presented in court to-day, on the adjourned charge of breaking thirteen panes of glass in the window of the police cell. Poor Yon appeared very much "cut up" after his cell. Poor Von appeared very much cut up after his weeks imprisonment, and he conducted himself quite in a model manner in the court -not endeavouring to leap across the benches, swing about his cap, or ask for his monish He handed in a document on which he professed to have his history written, but which no one (and, it was thought not even himself) could read. He was asked if he had any- thing to say, but he gave the best possible answer to this, by remaining stolidly silent. He was then told that he should get another week's imprisonment, but even this did not move him. During the remainder of the day he occupied himself in gazing at the different prisoners brought up. in We wish joy to the next people who get Von amwngst them It was since discovered that the letter was written in Hebrew. The disgraceful case of rape on two young children. --This adjourned case against Thomas O'Hearne was heard to-day in a private room. It appeared that the girl Martha Griffiths, is over twelve years old, and as she made no noise resistance when being ravished by the prisoner, the charge was dismissed. On the other charge for committing a rape Sarah Ann Griffiths, on aged nine years, the prisoner was fully committed for trial. Bail was refused. For full report see Saturday's police at Merthyr. A dangerous felloio.-John Lloyd, a very red headed customer; was charged with unlawfully cutting and wound- ing Daniel Williams, a blocklayer, of Cwmdare. The plaintiff appeared in court with a large patch on the left side of his face, and he stated he was in a public house in Aberdare, where the prisoner also was. Prisoner gave him a drink out of his pint, and when it was empty called for another. He said that plaintiff was to pay for it, but he (plaintiff) refused to do 80. A glass was then thrown at him, and it cut him severely. He believed he would have bled to death had not Mr Phillips come to attend him.— Joshua Jones, a farm servant, now living at Aberdare, said he saw the prisoner firing the tumbler at plaintiff which cut him so much. After that Williams struck prisoner on the nose with a stick.-T. L. Phillips, assistant Surgeon,. said he examined plaintiff's wound about three hours after it had been dressed. There was a large incised wound on the cheek from about 2J to 3 inches, it extended from the angle of the left eye, down to the lip. It penetrated to the bone. P.C. Morgan said he arrested the prisoner in the Railway Tavern, Aberdare, and when he told him the charge, prisoner said I only thought to throw a drop of beer over him, but instead of that it went into his face. He then struck me with a stick, and I struck him with a tumbler. "-Prisoner was committed for trial. Drunk and .BM<o!M. —John Watkins bor being drunk and riotous in Hirwain road, was fined 7s 6d, or in default of payment, seven days in jail. Selling beer without a license.-The adjourned case against Martha Williams for selling beer without a license was then heard. Public House Cases.—Job Morris, landlord of the Wynd- ham Arms, was charged with selling drink on Sunday the 10th instant, at an illegal hour.-P.C. Williams said he went to the defendant's house at twenty minutes past four o'clock on the above day, and he saw the door open. In- side he found five men with two pints of beer before them. Three of the men were under the influence of drink.-As it appeared that the men represented themselves as travel- lers, the case was dismissed with a caution. The Prince of Wales. David Lewis the landord of the Prince of Wales was charged with keeping his house open for the sale of beer at eleven o'clock at night.—P.C. Lewis proved the case and defendant was fined 2s 6d and costs. The Royal Oak. — William Barry, landlord of the Royal Oak, for selling a pint of beer at an improper hour on Sun- day the 10th instant, was fined 5s and costs. The Crown. —Margaret Harris, landlady of the Crown, was charged with selling beer at a quarter past 8 o'clock on Sunday morning the 10th instant.-P.C. Bevan proved the case, but as Mrs Harris was not present the case was ad- journed for her appearance. The Lamb.—Sarah Wakefield of the Lamb, was charged with selling beer at an improper hour on the 11th inst. At about a quarter past five o'clock in the morning there were five men in the house, and they were drunk. Defendant was fined 10s and costs, and when paying it she complained greatly of this hardness on a widow. Assault Case.-In the adjourned case of Jane Edwards v. William Phillips, the defendant was fined 10s and costs, or in default ten days in jail. The money was not paid. Stealing Coal. WIlham Lloyd, a most miserable looking man, whose head was cut in several places, was charged with stealing 60 lbs. of coal from Thomas C. Hine, and Co. The prisoner admitted the offence, and was sent to jail with hard labor for one week.

EBBW VALE. CRICKET MATCH.The first cricket match for this season came off on Thursday last in the Duffryn field, between eleven of the Beaufort cricket club and eleven of the Ebbw Vale. It was a spirited match. The greater part of those from Beaufort were young men, some of them being real juveniles, yet they were pretty well up to the mark. Those of Ebbw Vale were mostly old experienced hands, and after several hours' contest, the Ebbw Vale eleven were declared victorious by 48 runs. THUNDER STORM. —A very violent thunder storm broke over this neighbourhood on Saturday night. The rumbling of the thunder, as long as it lasted, was most appalling, and the vivid flashes of lightning tilled many with dismay. The rain fell in torrents, which was very acceptable, as the water spouts were nearly dry, and water for domestic pur- poses was very scarce besides, the land and gardens stood in need of a little sprinkling. We have not heard that any damage of a serious nature has been done either to person or property in this locality. ZION SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY.—On Sunday last the church worshipping at Zion held their school anniver- sary, when collections were made for the school funds. The Rev. J. Hughes preached three very suitable sermons to good congregations. The scholars in their recitations and singing acquitted themselves with great credit, which shows that much pains and labour have been given by the teach- ers to bring the scholars to such a state of proficiency, and thus enable them to maintain their well-earned reputation of being second to no school in the locality. TEETOTALISM.—Every one will agree with us that tee- totalism has been for a long time at a low ebb in this town, in consequence of the apathy of those who profess to imbibe the principle of total abstinence, and in their not having courage enough to advocate publicly the temperance cause. Some years ago there was a flourishing cause in this locality and the members of the society were incessant in their ex- ertions to propagate their opinions, and denounce the drink- ing traffic as the greatest curse to society and the sure road to ruin. Then the society could procure the services of a Gough, a Lemat, a Cossham, a Grub, a Vincent, and many other eminent teetotal lecturers. We should not forget a Cheap Jack who was styled the apostle of the tee- totallers, who, although somewhat unpolished, did as much for the temperance movement as any of his predecessors, but since Cheap Jack, or Richard Reese, left this locality, the teetotallers have done comparatively nothing to stem the torrent of drunkeness, and many a promising youth has beeen ruined morally and intellectually, by indulging in intemperate habits. Now, there is scarcely a vestige of the temperance cause to be traced in our neighbourhood, and were it not for the strenuous efforts of the Brynhyfryd Baptists, who have managed to keep up the Band of Hope, teetotalism would have been buried in oblivion. On Satur- day night last Mr. Bromley, a member of the American Congress (on a visit to his native country), delivered a lec- ture in Welsh, in the open air, on teetotalism, and on Sun- day the same gentleman delivered three more lectures on the same subject. A large gathering of persons was pre- sent on each occasion. The arguments made use of, although poignant, could not fail to convince any unpreju- diced mind that it was high time that those in black cloth did more to raise the degraded drunkard from his miserable state, and place him in a more noble and honourable posi tion. We understand that Mr. Bromley will take a toui through Wales for the purpose of advocating the temper- ance cause.

IMPORTANT DECISION AFFECTING COLLIERS AND MINERS. ABERDARE COUNTY COURT. JUNE 13.-( Befor.e his Honour Judge Falconer.) William Phillips v. Thomas Wayne.—This was an action to recover wages, namely .El 10s. The plaintiff had re- fused to continue to work a certain stall in a coal pit. The plaintiff stated that he did not continue to work in th« pit, because he was in want of a place to work in. They would give me no place but that where I was, and there I was afraid of my life. I had worked in the pit about five months. Gave up the stall because of the danger. They told me timber must be put up. I met the timberman before I left, and he told me, I am going to timber your stall." I said "go." I would not have gone there again if they had timbered it. There had been a fall three or four times. Falls are not frequent in the pit.—John Roberts said I am still working in the pit. I now the place in question. The roof is not bad in the works. They have now timbered the place in question.—Is it safe since the timbering? I would not have worked there.—Thomas Evans, overman: I know the stall. I do not consider it to be at all dangerous. There are some stalls better and some worse. There has been no fall since it was timbered. A tin: ber-man is usually sent at once when necessary, un- less the man there can timber it himself. The plaintiff was asked to do it, and he said he could not. A man was sent to do it.—What was the state of the top? The top had fallen five to six feet in breadth, and five to six feet in height. It had fallen so as to shut up the whole side. Any man accustomed to underground work would not be frightened at it. I told him there was no occasion to fear, and I encouraged him to go on.—David Thomas said: I work where the plaintiff did, and I have no fear in doing so, otherwise I would not work there. The place had been made safe when I went there. I did not see it before I went there. There are three pair of double timbers. I am not sure if there is any other double timber in the heading. -His honour said he did not doubt that the place was safe and that proper precaution had been taken. He (thought, however, the plaintiff had a real apprehension of danger. When there is a trua belief of danger a man may refuse to work, and those who manage the works must give such as- surance of the absence of it as to induce the work to be again undertaken. It is evident the plaintiff had cause for apprehension and, therefore, refused to go back to the par- ticular place he had been set to work in. He acted in a bona fide belief of a cause for fear. There was no trick; no desire to leave the pit in order to annoy his employer nor was there any misconduct or disregard of duty. All I have to decide, if I decided adversely to the claim, would be that there was misconduct. As there was a real appre- hension of danger, I cannot measure the degree of appre- hended danger a man may face with safety to himself. It is enough that, at the time he really entertained reasonable grounds to apprehend danger. This I infer to have been the case. I, therefore, hold that he is entitled to be paid the wages which he had earned,and now sues for. Judg- ment for the plaintiff.

REVIEW. "THE GREAT WHITE THRONE." BY THE REV. J. THOMAS, TREDEGAR London: S. W. Partridge, 9, Paternoster-row. -3d. In this little pamphlet Mr. Thomas presents us with a dis- course on that great scene which is to divide the present order of things from the eternal future. The discourse, as the author informs us, was delivered before the "Monmouth- shire Association of Congregational Ministers," and received such cordial approbation from the members of that body as to encourage him to give it a wider circulation. It contains a simple and somewhat graphic description of the Great White Throne and the awful events which are to transpire before it. The author endeavours, and not without success, to prove from his text the judicial position, the royalty, the purity, and, above all, the divinity of Christ. The univer- sality otlhe judgment is also discussed but we think the author has exceeded what is written when he asserts (p. 16.) that all worlds will then be for once emptied of their in- habitants." This is nowhere stated in Scripture and if it be the case, as he himself admits (p. 9.) it may be, that the dis- solution of the heavens may take place only "in appearance, there will be no occasion for emptying the celestial bodies. One phrase in his text, "cast into the lake of fire, is a puzzling one, and certainly requires some explanation; for we are informed that death and hell (that is, according to Bible phraseology, death and the grave ) shall be cast into that lake. Now, as this can only mean that they are then to be abolished, how are we to interpret the same ex- pression when it is said that whosoever was not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire ?" This is no captious question, but one which shows how ne- cessary it is for preachers, not only to employ the language of Scripture, but to explain it. Our space will not permit us to say more. We assure our readers that this discourse breathes an air of genuine piety, and if it be not distin- guished by exhaustive exposition, it still possesses the great merit of earnestness and simplicity, so as, we hope, to awaken, convict, and profit even the careless reader.
