THE NEW TOWN HALL. Tin: negotiation between the Town Hall Committee and the Library as to the terms of amalgamation, seems to be nearly as de- b licate an affair as the Syrian question, and to be equally difficult of settlement. We were in hopes that they would have worked toge- ther harmoniously, and that we might have looked forward with confidence to seeing not only a fine Town Hall, but the Library housed therein but on enquiry we find that both these desirable things are in some peril. It appears that when the Library Com- mittee consented to subordinate their scheme to that of the Town Hall, there was no defi. nite agreement as to the terms and accord- ingly when these came to be discussed it was found that the views of the two parties were directed to different ends. The Town Hall Committee calculated upon a rent of X30 from the Library to pay dividends upon their shares, while on the other hand, the Library Committee had resolved to capitalize the rent, and by a vigorous effort now to free themselves from any annual charge from this time forth. They accordingly proposed to pay a sum of £500 at once, and take a lease of two rooms to be provided for them in the Town Hall, for a term of 99 years, at the nominal rent of Is., free of all charge for ground rent and repairs. The proposal came upon the Hall Com- mittee unexpectedly; but upon considering the subject, they resolved to accept cSCOO for two rooms of somewhat smaller dimensions. There are, therefore, two points of difference —one of apace, the other of money. The Library Committee want two rooms, one 30 feet by 20, and the other 20 feet by 15; while the Hall Coinnnfctee offer 30 feet by 18, and 18 feet by 15 the difference between them being 90 feet, or sitting room for about twenty people while the difference in money is e8100. It is contended on the one side that the required accommodation can be ob- tained for £ 500. while the other side assert it will cost double the money. At a special meeting, held at the Library Hoom on Tuesday, the proposal of the Hall Committee came under consideration; but, knowing that it would be an arduous un- dertaking to raise even cEoOO in the form of donations, the managers of the Library re- solved to abide firmly by the first proposal, and in case of its final rejection to push for- ward their own project. It is a most desirable object to relieve the Library from the annual charge which has hitherto impeded its progress; and there is a moral grandeur in the attempt to place the institution upon a permanent footing, which must obtain public admiration and support, We cannot, therefore, do otherwise than heartily wish the project complete success; but we hope at the same time, that the two schemes may be brought to work harmo- niously, and that the Hall Committee may be able to accept the proposal made from the Library. The simplest solution of the difficulty, and ;hat which we expected to see carrie'ii out, 1,1 vould have been for the 1T :]1 Committee to ~,V lave given the Library the room they re- quire, at a nominal rent, and for the mana- ."f ?ers of that institution to have transferred Gbeir subscriptions to promote the Hall 3cbeme; for it appears that there arc con- siderable promises held by them which will not be available for the Hall, or only avail- H able in the conjoint interests of the Library. In this case, the Library Committee, who were first in the field, and who have there- fore prior claim to public support, would not only withdraw their project and leave the field, but would also give material support to the promoters of the Hall. But as matters now stand, even by the acceptance of the £500, both projects will be urged upon the town, and public sympathy will be divided between the two, and possibly to the disad- vantage of both. The supporters of the Library are ready to give their money freely without expecting any return, save the con- sciousness of doing a public service, and we doubt not that many of the subscribers of Jhc^Iall are equally public spirited, and will npt care much about receiving dividends jnerefrom. Upon this basis it seems to us that the two schemes could easily be recon- ciled. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. »f A MBRTHYB, CUCUMBER AT TBNBV.-There is now exhibiting in a fruiterer's shop in Tenby a monster cucumber, which attracts the greatest notice and the warmest plaudits. It may be some satisfaction for Merthyr amateurs to know that this cucumber was grown by Richard Thomas, Esq., of the Court. We have seen the vegetable', which measures 31 inches in length, is propor- tionately thick, and altogether one of the finest we have ever beheld. THE HARVEST.—Although our hill farmers are foreboding and prophecy disastrous times and high—almost famine prices-we are glad to hear that corn growers are not yet disconsolate.. Harvest operations have commenced in several counties, and if old Sol would favour the land for a little while with his sunny visage, the crops would far exceed the average in quantity, and be a fair average in quality. We noticed this week, I in the window of the Post Office, a fine sample of wheat from Gloucestershire, and, as we hear, it was picked at random, the sample proves that the favourable opinion of the harvest yet enter. tained, is pretty well founded. MocK AUCTIONS. We are informed that a mock auction has been held in the town, and a good amount of business transacted. Our working men will do well to be exceedingly care- ful what they buy in any auction room that is not attended by a Merthyr auctioneer of known re- spectability; and as a valuable rule for their guidance, to remember that any stranger who praises the goods put up for sale, in order to tempt, is mvariably a knave m the employ of the firm J. HE KEY. HUGH STOWELL Bit OWN.—Within tne last few years some of the younger ministers of the Gospel have boldly and successfully entered the lists as popular lecturers. They have felt that whilst the pulpit was their ordinary, and most important sphere, the platform should not be neglected. They have recognised the fact that there are hundreds of topics, interesting and instructive to the great mass, and which can. not with propriety be introduced into the pulpit, and they know that there are tens of thousands of our countrymen, especially those dwelling in large towns, who-never enter places of public wor- ship. Influenced by a knowledge of these two facts, and by a desire to promote the social and moral well-being of their fellow.men, the ministers to whom we allude in a noble spirit of self-sacrifice T have voluntarily undertaken the laborious and critical duties of public lecturers by this means they have accomplished great good. They have popularised many subjects which previously were regarded as dry and uninteresting. They have improved the tastes of the people, and raised thousands to a high social, jfnd moral position. One of the first to undertake, and certainly the most successful in following, the duties of public lecturer, is the Rev. Hugh Stowell Brown, who is to lecture in Merthyr, on the 11th of September. Those who heard him deliver his lecture in Mer- i41 thyr on "The Proverbs of the people," can understand how it is that year after year for many years past the people of Liverpool, and the North of England, throng to listen to him. It has never been our pleasure to listen to a lecture which so captivated and instructed us as did that of Mr. Brown. And intelligent men who have 4 had the most extended experience in the way of H hearing lecturers, most emphatically testify that they never hoard anything in any way compara- ble to that lecture. We are very anxious that all in and around M erthyr who can appreciate a good lecture should be present when Mr. Brown -I appears again before a Merthyr audience. Scores were absent *rom the last lecture because they iH were not acquainted with his name, and popular- ity. but we hope that not one of our fellow citizens will lose the chance which is now offered them of hearing England's most powerful public lecturer. EXCURSIONS.—If the enterprising spirit of the Vale of Neath Company received anything like its due reward, shares would be at premium, and people anxious to get, not sell them. This week another excursion on a large scale took place on the Vale of Neath liaihvay from Carmarthen to Merthyr. At about mid-day the streets were inundated with hosts of the ilip Van Winkle hat, < carried about, of course, by the cherry-cheeked, "fI round-faced damsels of Carmarthen. Old and young, townsmen, countrymen, all were repre- sented; and throughout the day they might be seen munching their frugal dinners, and looking at the various "lions" possessed by our good town. The day, considering the wet season, was fair, and nothing occurred to mar the enjoyment of the pleasure-seekers. In reference to the ex- :1It cursion, we heard only one complaint made by our neighbours, which complaint takes the form fn of a regret, and Is-that it is a pity the Vale of eb Neath Railway Co. does not discover a generous,, open-purse sort of people down country, and, having discovered them, benefit Merthyr trades- men by bringing a host of these generous excur- sionists up to town.
