HOUSE OF LORDS.-The Licensing Bill passed through Committee on Tuesday substantially in the form in which it was sent up from the Commons. HOUSE OF COMMONS.—The House of Commons was occupied with discussion on the Land Titles and Transfer Bill, the second reading of which was moved by the Attorney-General. Sir W. Harcourt remarked that it did not go half far enough, and that, if it were passed under the name of the Land Titles and Transfer Bill, the public would be greatly disappointed, for they would find that it left thing's very much as they were. Sir Francis Goldsmid withdrew the amendment he had moved, declaring that the House, whilst fully recognising the importance of facilitating and cheapening the transfer of was of opinion that these objects would not be accomplished by the measure proposed, and the bill was read a second time. The Real Property (Vendors and Purchasers') Bill, and the Real Property Limitation Bill, were read a second time, and, some other measures having been advanced a stage, the House adjourned. 0

FUNERAL OF MARSHAL CONCHA. The public funeral of Marshal Concha has taken place at Madrid, and was a great State ceremony, the procession including Serrano and the Cabinet, a large number of military and naval officers, and many officials of the State departments. The troops of the garrison also attended. The body was conveyed to Atocha Church, in the crypt of which Marshal Concha's remains will rest until the mausoleum in Malaga is ready to receive them. The corpse was placed in a very handsome coffin, and this rested on an artillery waggon drawn by eight horses. In addition to the public func- tionaries who joined the procession many civic bodies and private persons sent their carriages. The cortege also included three of the Marshal's horses, one of them being the animal Concha was mounting when f he received his death wound. The greatest order prevailed, and everywhere there was an expression [of the most intense popular sympathy. Con- cha's brother, who is Captain-General of Cuba, has seat a telegram, in which he says, I referring to the deceased-" His death leaves me an example which I am ready to follow, if it be necessary." Marshal Concha lived only ten minutes after he was wounded. The troops had immense difficulty in rescuing his body from the Carlists. Marshal Concha was born at Madrid in 1794. He first bore arms in the War of Independence > against Napoleon and on the termination of the I European wars he set out, in 1816, for the colonies f of South America, then in revolt against Spanish rule, and distinguished himself, along with Espar- I- tero' in this difficult campaign. On his return to Soain in 1824 he served first as Brigadier, then as Acting-Marshal, in the Carlist war and was elected la deputy of the Cortes by the city of Cadiz. Attached to the Moderate party, and devoted to the interests of Maria-Christina and of her daughter, Isabella, he served first under Espartero, and then, after the de- feat of his chief, he became one of the principal sup- ports of the Government of Narvaez. In June, 1843, he was appointed Governor of Valencia and of Murcia, and soon forced the rebels of Saragossa to capi- tulate, and occupied Barcelona in the name of the Queen. In 1844 he suppressed a new j, Progressist rising in Carthagena, and in ao- knowledgment of his services received the f title of Captain-General of Catalonia. After the Liberals, the Carlists in turn agitated the province, breaking into open insurrection. General Concha, however, soon mastered them, and declared Don Carlos as well as the Prince of the Asturias, traitors to the' country, and also outlaws. In 1847, when differences had arisen between the Spanish and Portuguese Governments, he was sent to the Por- tuguese frontier with 6000 picked men, and he occupied the town of Oporto. During the same year he accompanied the Queen, Maria-Christina, to Paris, and afterwards he returned to his work as a deputy, taking his place among the strictest members of the Constitutional and Conser- vative party. In 1849 he received the command of the second Spanish Corps d' ArmSe sent into Italy to assist in the re-establishment of the Pope, and occupied Terracina. But he soon returned to Spain, and "charged himself anew with the functions of Captain-General of Catalonia. Towards the close of 1857, distrusting the tendencies of the new Govern- ment of Isabella, he prepared, along with O'Donnell, Gonzales Bravo, and others, a political address de- manding a prompt convocation of the Cortes. This act, which was the signal of the revolu- tion of 1854, was pronounced unconstitutional, and the Cabinet issued an order for his banishment to the Canary Isles. He preferred, however, to retire to France, whence the revolutionary movements in progress in Spain soon recalled him. Arrived at Saragossa, he received from the Junta the command of the insurrection, which terminated with the exile of Maria Christina, the fall of Narvaez, and the re- establishment of Espartero. All the dignities he formerly enjoyed were restored to General Concha, and he was appointed, besides, General of Artillery, and afterwards Marshal. These titles were" continued to him by O'Donnell after the coup. d'état which overthrew Espartero in 1858, but they were withdrawn from him on the return of Narvaez, who forced him to retire from office He remained inactive till near the close of Isabella's reign. When the revolt oi! 1868 had be- come formidable, the Queen charged Marshal Concha with the formation of a Cabinet, of which he as- sumed the presidency. Though the insurrection had become general, the Marshal thought mmself abl- to resist it if the Queen would return to Madrid But she refused to do this, and thereupon the Carlists. AS FOUR MEN WERE ASCENDING A STEAM- HOIST at the Cloth-hill Mills, Dewsbury { works of Messrs. Michill Bros.), the chain broke, an all four were precipitated a depth of 60 or 70 feet. One named Thos. Ward was killed, and the others are not expected to recover from the injuries they have received.

THEATRICAL SUMMARY. Another comedian, who has been known to the public for some time, has undertaken the difficult task of representing Cabriolo," the mountebank and parvenu baron, in the Princess of Trebizond. The work has been made additionally arduous from the fact that Mr. Toole recently impersonated the same character, but Mr. G. J. Taylor has shown a great amount of ability, which will render him no unworthy successor of that great comedian. The Princess of Trebizond was produced at a morning pei formance at the GAIETY THEATRE in London, and as the attempt has been perfectly satisfactory, the company are about making a tour through the pro- vinces, during which the Princess will be the prin- cipal attraction.-The ROYALTY THEATRE, which gained for itself such well-deserved notoriety some few years ago, on the production of the late T. W. Robertson's comedies, bids fair to lose its prestige, and descend into quite a second,rate place of enter- tainment. Archie Lovell was produced some short time since, and, owing to its visible want of ani- mation and interest, has been supplemented by an eccentric comedy," entitled Better Late Than Never. The French are a decidedly entertaining people, and by their irrepressible flow of animal spirits contrive to make a very small incident appear intensely amusing, but when that trifling incident is detached from the rest of the play, from the lively dialogue and sprightly acting, what wonder if it fall upon English ears as something intensely dull and stupid r L'Homme qui manque de Qhauce is the title of the original French whimsicality, and Mr. F. C. Burnand has introduced it at the ROYALTY under the some- what inappropriate name of Better Late Than Never. The scene is laid in Wales, and some laughter is attempted at the expense of the inhabitants of the principality. The principal details, if any there really be, are concentrated upon a dilatory lover who leaves his country to seek his fortune, deter- mining to return, when that most desirable circum- stance shall have taken place, and wed the object of his affections. He does make a fortune, returns to, as he supposes, his own true love," and finds her the wife of a hypochondriacal old gentleman. Maddened, he returns to Africa, makes more money, and returns a second time, to find his fair one married a second time to an old fire-eating captain. Re- solved to make no more money, he consoles himself by marrying his intended's friend, and in the end all are very "happy." The only acting deserving of any men- tion is that of Miss Maggie Brennan as the fair one Clementina."—Mr. Sims Reeves, who has been suffer- ing from severe indisposition which he has only recently recovered from, held his annual benefit concert at the Albert Hall. Capacious and vast as the auditorium is well known to be, it was as crowded as if it had been the occasion of a State concert, and Mr. Reeves need not fear that his popularity has in any degree dimi- nished during his temporary withdrawal from public life. Not only did the great tenor himself sing, but Madame Nilsson, Madame Trebelli-Bettini, Madame ,Sherrington, and Miss D'Alton gave their valuable services. Contrary to his usual custom, Mr. Reeves gave an encore to the duet between Madame Nilsson and himself, but though recalled thrice, when he sang Tom Bowling," he followed his usual practice of bowing his acknowledgments. Madame Nilsson ren- dered Auld Robin Gray" in her most captivating manner,, and it is a source of very great satisfaction that her voice has in no degree suffered by her sing- ing in the halls of America, but seems rather to have gained in fulness and richness of tone. e AT THE HIGH COURT OF JUSTICIARY, Edin- burgh, Martin Gilboy has been found guilty of the murder of William Armstrong at Bonnyrigg on April 25, by stabbing him with a knife, and was sentenced to be executed on July 21. The jury recommended the prisoner to mercy. A GRAND BANQUET has been given by the Corporation of the Trinity Board at their house, in London, to the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Con- naught, Prince Christian, Prince Edward of Saxe- Weimar, the Lord Chancellor, several of her Majesty's Ministers,and many persons variously distinguished. WILT JAM MILNE, a boy only ten years of age, has been sentenced, at the Aberdeen Police-court, to ten days' imprisonment and five years in the Oldmill Reformatory for having struck his grand- father (with whom he lived in Upperkirkgate, Aber- deen) on the head with a stool. THE OCEAN YACHT RACE, from Dover to the Isle of White, has just been decided. Mr. W. Turner's Celonia, schooner, 202 tons, being the first to rourfd the Spithead, followed, a quarter of an hour after, by Major Ewing's Gwendoline, schooner, 191 tons. AT THE WARWICKSHIRE QUARTER SESSIONS Leanda Shepherd (23), pleaded guilty to having, at Kenilworth, on the 26th of May, while a member of the Warwickshire constabulary, embezzled £ 18 18s. 9d. belonging to her Majesty the Queen. In consideration of the prisoner having been in gaol five weeks, and being strongly recommended to mercy by the deputy chief constable, he was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment. THE HOUSE OF A MAN named Taylor, residing at Crogh^n, near Phillipstown, King's County, Ireland, has been attacked by an armed party, and the outer doer broken open. The assai- lants, being unable to force open the inner door, fired through it, and wounded Ta: lor in the breast. The wounded man professes not to know who his assailants were, but the outrage is attributed to a dispute between him and his sister, ha having married recently, while she insists on her right to remain ir. the house and to a share of the land. A MAN, WHO DESCRIBED HIMSELF as a betting agent, has been charged at the Southwark Police- court, London, with having defrauded the South- Western Railway company by travelling on the line without paying his fare. A train was returning from Stockbridge Races, and, on being brought to a stand- still, a short distance from Clapham Junction, a number of men got out of a carriage, climbed the embankment, and ran away. The prisoner was caught, and, on his being found without a ticket, he was given into custody. He was ordered to pay a penalty of 40s., with the alternative of a month's imprisonment. A MAN HIS OWN EXECUTOR.—xvir. James Lick, of San Francisco, having in the course of his life accumulated a large fortune, chiefly by judicious purchases of land in California, executed on June 2, 1874, a deed by which he conveyed all his property to seven persons upon trust to leave him in posses- sion of his homestead for life, and to pay him during his life such sums as he may require not exceeding 25,000 dols. a year, and also to pay legacies to rela- tives of his amounting in all to 26,000 dols. As to all the rest of his property, the trustees are to apply it to various public uses specified in the deed. Among these are the following 700,000 dols. to be applied to the construction of a more powerful telescope than any yet made, the same to be erected at an observa- tory in California; 250,000 dols. for a group of sta- tuary to be erected in the State Capitol grounds, representing the history and progress of California 300 000 dols. to. found in California a school of mechanical arts; 150,000 dols. for a monument to the memory of Francis Scott Key, the author of the song, "The Star-Spangled Banner;" 150,000 dols. for the erection and maintenance of free public baths in San Francisco 100,000 dols. to founa an Old Lady's Home," for women unable to support taem- selves smaller sums to various public charities, and for the erection, of monuments to the memory of Mr. Lick's father, mother, sister, and grandfather, of which last the deed states that his name was written in the German language Liik," and that he died at the age of 104 years, having suffered much in the War of Independence; the residue is given to the California Academy of Sciences and the Society of California Pioneers.

FIGHT BETWEEN A DOG AND A D WARE. (From the Daily Telegraph.") In narrating the sequel of my experiences, I wish to say that my object is twofold first, to truly paint the 'scene-which I have witnessed; and next, to turn the attention of the local authorities to such barbarism as I have now described. If the brutality in question long survives after I have told my tale, then, indeed, I have written this unpleasant account in vain. I resolved to go through with the matter, and punctual to the minute—half-past eight o'clock. --I was at the trysting-place. You had better not meet us at the alehouse," whispered the Old Hand, as we parted on the previous night; stand at the corner of Mill-lane, and when you see us, follow without taking noticed" The Old Hand and his friend, the owner of the brown retriever, were as faithful to the appointment as I myself; and they strolled up Mill-lane innocently smoking their pipes. A halt was called near a dirty row of houses, at the door of one of which stood a man in miner garb, who knocked the ashes out of his pipe against the doorpost, and this evidently was a preconcerted sign, for my companions made straight for the house and speedily the outer door was bolted from within, and further secured with a stout chain. The scene was a place about sixteen feet square, with bare walls and a brick floor, and at the four sides a rope was already extended, leaving a space of about a yard between it and the wall, and here, railed off from the centre, three deep, were the sightseers. Pit- lads most of them, some black as when they came up out of the pit, with a sprinkling of the "rough" and costermonger order, the most prominent of the gathering being half-a-dozen swells of the country fancy." But the person- age who chiefly attracted my attention was a dwarf -a man of at least middle age, but certainly of not more than four feet and a half in height, yet with tremendous hands and feet and bandy legs. This was "Brummy." He was honoured with much notice on the part of the sporting swells," who shook hands with him, ill-looting and repulsive as he appeared to be, even favouring him with their whispered confidence. Then one of the sporting "gents" took out his timekeeper and called "five minutes to time," whereon there was a clapping of hands, and the bandy-legged dwarf proceeded to divest himself of his coat and waistcoat, his blue-checked shirt, and his boots, leaving himself with nothing on but his trousers, and an under-flannel cut off high at the shoulders. Stripped, he appeared an extraordinary muscular fellow, and his arms, which were nearly covered with hair, were scarred, each of them from the wrists to the elbows, as though at some time or other he had been badly burnt. 0 The creature likewise had a scar, ugly and jagged, within an inch of his collar-bono, and another-—now one came to examine him for wounds-at the right side of his chin, which looked like a piece bitten out of a dirty apple and put back again. Then he took from a pocket of his coat a phial filled with what looked like oil, and, amidst almost breathless silence, com- menced to anoint his arms and fists with it, rubbing it well in. All ready ? asked the sporting swell with the watch. Ay, mun, bring him as sune as ye like," grinnned the dwarf and then there was heard the pattering of a four-footed animal, and an anxious whining, and, the kitchen-door opening, in came Dan'l with Physic. It was my friend the elderly miner of the evening before, and Physic was the hideous-jowled dirty white bull-dog. The instant that Physic caught sight of "Brummy" he gave a furious gasp, but Dan'l had him fast by the great leather collar, and, hauled him to the wall, where another man hitched a stout chain to a holding, while one performed the same office for the dwarf. There could no longer be any misunderstanding as to the horrible encounter which was about to happen. This dreadful dwarf had backed himself, or had been backed himself, or had been -backed by his friends, to engage in combat with Dan'l's bull-dog. As well as I could make out the terms of the fight were that both dog and man were to be allowed length of rope enough to get at each other, but there was not so much of it that either could fail to get out of the other's reach should he deem it prudent. The biped brute was to kneel down or go on all-fours, and to use no other weapon than his clenched fists. He was by no means to take hold of the quadruped's collar, or to attempt to grapple with the dog unless the dog "made fast" to him, when he would be at liberty to use his hands in order to extricate himself. In case the bull-dog should be lucky enough to "pin" his enemy, the man had only to cry out "I'm done," and means would be promptly taken to compel the victor to loosen his grip. On Brummy's" part, to van the fight he was either to stun or so punish the dog that, despite all its master's urging, it would refuse to face the dwarf again after a full minute's notice. There was no need to encourage the red-eyed Physic; he was too eager for the fray. He did not bark, but he was frenzied with passion to that degree that tears trickled down his blunt nose, and his gaspmgs became each moment more shrill and hysterical. The man was on all fours when the words let go were uttered, and, making allow- ance for the length of the dog's chain, he arched his back catwise, so as to escape its fangs and fetched it a blow on the crown of its head that brought it almost to its knees. The dog's recovery was instantaneous, and bef re the dwarf could draw back Physic made a second dart forward, and this time its teeth grazed the biped's arm, causing a slight red trickling. The haiiy dwarf was still smiling, and the animal made for its opponent in a sudden leap, but the dwarf leapt forward too and smote the bull-dog such a tremendous blow under the ear as to roll it completely over. But with astonishing energy Physic turned about, and with a dash was again at the dwarf, and this time contrived to fix its teeth in one of his hairy arms, a terrible gash appearing as the man snatched the limb out of his ravenous jaws. The bull-dog was licking his lips, and .hadfewer tears in his eyes as his master drewhim back. Round 3," was a fight in earnest, the dog worry- ing the man and the man dealing it terrific blows on the ribs and on the head with those sledge- hammer fists, till in the end both the man's arms were bleeding. By the time Round 10 was con- cluded the bull dog's head was swelled much beyond its accustomed size it bad lost two teeth and one of its eyes was entirely shut up; while as for the Dwarf, his fists as well as his arms were reeking, and his hideous face was ghastly pale with rage and despair of victory. In round 11, the bull-dog came on fresh and foaming with awful persistence of fury, but with desperate strength the dwarf dealt him a tremen- dous blow under the chin, and with such effect that the dog was dashed against the wall, where it lay still, and the wretch who had so disgraced what aspect of humanity was in him was declared the victor. I shall have gone through that horrid spec- tacle to little purpose if any such tournaments are, in future, waged at Hanley. • A STATE BANQUET has been given in Vienna to the Grand Duke Constantine, who is understood to have gone to that city to commemorate the anni- versary of the Battle of Raab. The Emperor of Austria proposed a toast to his" dear friend "the Emperor Nicholas and to the Russian army and navy, to which the Grand Duke replied. A GERMAN DOCTOR NAMED UIILING, Of New York, who has been under the charge some time of attempting to defraud the Merchants' Life Insurance Company by representing that a Louise Germs was dead and buried, when, in fact, the said Louise was alive, and the coffin which Uhling said contained her remains only had bricks iu it, has been convicted o the crime charged against him, and sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment.

SUICIDE OF A PRISONER IN GAOL. An inquest-ha3 been held at Warwick Gaol on the body of Francis Hopkins, alias John White, who was awaiting trial at the Quarter Sessions on the charge of stealing a watch at Aston, the property of Ben- jamin Shorthouse. The deceased, who was 34, was received into gaol on the 11th June, and the next day became so violent that it was found necessary to place him in a padded cell. On the 15th he became calmer, and was placed in one of the ordi- nary cells, where he hanged himself by means of a piece of sheet fastened to an iron plate. David Hopkins, 19, -Lancaster-street;, wood-carver, Bir- mingham, the mother, and the widow were present. It appeared that deceased was a skilled carpenter, and earned 36s. a week when at work. He had, however, bad habits. He had been convicted five times, the last occasion being in 1867, when he got seven years' for stealing pearl buttons. He was also given to drink occasionally, and was described as sullen and morose. Since his confinement in gaol he had written several letters home, in which he described his brain as on fire, and said he did not know what he had done since he was committed. He also asked his friends to be kind to'his wife. The jury returned a verdict of Suicide while in a state l of unsound mind."

ASSAULT BY CIRCUS LADIES. A case of assault andbattery betwE en ladies connected with Sangers'travelling circ.s has been heard before the Hereford magistrates, and excited much curious interest. Madame Green, the complainant, charged Mdlles. Rose and Annie Chinniworth with an assault and battery. On the 20th of May the parties were travelling from Ludlow to Ross in the ladies' omnibus of Sangers' troupe of equestrians. Be- fore leaving Ludlow, Madame Green, a lady between five and six feet high, slapped Annie Chinniworth, a very small young lady, in the face, it is said, all through the green-ej-ed monster." When near Here- ford all the ladies had to get out of the omnibus to ease the horses up rather a steep hill, after which Green got in first, placed herself on the right-hand seat at the door, threw herself lengthways over some luggage, occupying the room of two, and stretched her legs across the entrance to the'bus, so that when Rose Chinniworth attempted to enter the vehicle she tripped, and, smarting under the insult offered, she slapped her big antagonist in the face A fight ensued, eyes were blackened, faces scratched, noses made to bleed, chignons desi royed, and ear-rings torn from the parts they were intended to ornament. Strength at length told, and Madame Green called upon Rose Chinniworth to admit that she was beaten. Madame at once "threw up the sponge," saying, You have done enough for me." They were separated, and the conflict stopped by the ladies and gentlemen of the company. The magistrates held the assaults proved, but. with much provocation, and therefore fined Rose 10s. and Annie 5s., with costs, which altogether amounted to £ 3 8s., or in default imprisonment.

OBTAINING MONEY BY FALSE PRETENCES. At the Camberwell Police-court, London, William Thompson, 22, described as a clerk, living in Clap- ham, was charged with obtaining money by false pretences. The prisoner, it appeared, had recently became a voluntary teacher at the schools attached to St. Peter's Church, Vauxhall. In consequence he became known to the clergy and several members of the congregation, and undertook to collect sub- scriptions with a card for the schools. The cards were for penny subscriptions. A few days back prisoner went to the Rev. A. T. Edwards, vicar of St. Phillip's, Kennington-road, and represented that he was endeavouring to raise subscriptions on behalf of three orphan children. He wanted, if possible, to get X7 to apprentice one of them. Mr. Edwards said he must first have some letter to prove the case before he subscribed. Prisoner afterwards brought a letter purporting to have been written by the Rev. G. W. Herbert, of St. Peter's, which caused Mr. Edwards to give prisoner 5s. The prisoner after- wards took a letter purporting to come from Mr. Edwards, which induced Mr. Herbert to give a sub- scription. Both letters where shown to be forgeries. Detective Jupe took the prisoner into custody, when he said he had no intention to defraud any one. Mr. Bates, one of the curates of St. Peter's, also proved giving 5s. to defendant upon his representa- tion as to the orphan children. A lady at Clapham had also given money for the same object. It wa3 shown also that prisoner had altered the school col- lecting cards, so as to suit the purpose of his sub- scription for the supposed orphans. Inquiries had been since made which resulted in showing that the statement of the prisoner was a total fabrication. It was also proved that he had before been charged with obtaining money by false pretences, but in con- sequence of the parties prosecuting not pressing the case he was discharged. Prisoner still declared that he intended to devote the money he collected to some children. Mr. Ellison said prisoner had no doubt used his efforts to turn the stream of charity into his own pocket. He sentenced him to be im- prisoned with hard labour for six months.

SING ULAR MINING CASE. Vice-Chancellor Malins has decided the case of a company, in which Sir George Bowyer, Mr. de la Poer, Sir Spencer Robinson, Colonel Ankenan, and others were directors, tried before him in the Vice- Chancellor's Court, London. It appeared that early in the year 1872 a company was formed, composed of the above gentlemen and others, for the purchase of a mining property in California. It was stated that plaintiff, a Mr. Hartmann, had had an interest previously in the mine, and being aware that the above gentlemen were desirous of purchasing the property he endeavoured to give them to understand that the sum he had paid for it was < £ 285,000, while he had really paid but < £ 40,000. The company was formed under these conditions, and advertisements were inserted in several mining journals, with a view of obtaining a large number of shareholders. In the advertisements it was asserted that the property had been purchased for £285,000, and was an exceedingly profitable speculation. In the pro- spectus tee names of the above directors were printed conspicuously, but it was not stated that the pro- perty had really been purchased for £40,000. The company was duly formed, and in the end of 1872 had a money capital of .880,000. Plaintiff having lost Y,500 now sought to have his name struck off thâ list of shareholders. The Vice Chancellor said it bad been decided that where fraud had been employed to place a person's name on the *=> directors it was right he should have a bx.ain e' o. h 'y could 0 caIn taken off. The prospectus stated that the property was a 0110 *n Callfoin^. valued at £ 285,000 m fully paid-up shaies, and of some 13,000 feet in extent. + The fact, of the case was the very reverse. On the strength of this the public were sought to pay the difference between the £ 285,000 axd the £ 40,000 really paid. He could only say that it was a lamentable state of things that a body of gentlemen should sit on a board of directors in connection with such proceed- ings. Taking into account all the circumstances of the case, the manner in which plo, i, had been deceived by these misrepresentations and o+her reasons, he came to the conclusion that he was entitled to have his name disassociated from the lists of the company.

A SORROWING HUSBAND The following touching lament for a deceased wife, from a disconsolate editor of a Missouri paper, appears in the columns of that journal: Thus my wife died. No more will those loving hands pull off my boots and part my back hair, as only a wife can Nor will those willing feet replenish the coal-hod or water-pail. No more will she arise amid the tempes- tuous storms of winter and hie away to the fire with out disturbing the slumbers of the man who doted on her so artlessly. Her memory is embalmed upon my heart of hearts. I wanted to embalm her body, but found I could embalm her memory cheaper. I procured of Eli Mudgett, a neighbour of mine, a very pretty grave- stone. His wife was consumptive, and he kept it on hand several years in anticipation of her death. But she rallied last spring, and his hopes were blasted. CHILD MURDER IN GLOUCESTER- SHIRE. Mr. W. E. W. Coren, one of the county coioners, has held an inquest at Windrush, Gloucestershire, on the body of an infant which had been found con- cealed under the following- circumstances In July last a young woman named Mary Brown went into the service of Mrs. Ann Franklin, landlady of the Fox public-house, Windrush, and Mrs. Franklin, from facts which had come to her knowledge, taxed Brotvn with being pregnant, anci gave her notice to leave. Next morning she did not hear the girl go downstairs as usual, and thinking she might be skulking in consequence of what had been said to her on the previous day, lYIrs. Franklin went to her bedroom, when she noted indications of something having taken place during the night. The girl, however, was not in the room, but on going downstairs Mrs. Franklin found her about her work, looking pale and dejected. She accused her of having given birth to a child during the night, but the young woman stoutly denied it. A surgeon was then called in, and the girl haying-been examined it was found that her statement. was false. She then admitted that she had told her mistress' a. lie, and said she had put the child down the closet. A search of the closet was made by the police,. but, notwithstanding the girl's persistent state- ment that she had put it there, the child could not be found. After searching tne premises all night the police made an examination of the bank s of the Windrush, which runs at the bottom of the garden attached to the Fox, when they saw on the mud by the river-side what appeared to be & woman's footprints, and some small pieces of fresir clay. From these appearances it was suspected that the soil had been disturbed, and, on digging down- into the batik, the policeman found the dead body of a female child, wrapped up in a copy of the Times newspaper. The clay on the body was very firm, as if it had been trodden down with the feet or a shovel, and the constable had some difficulty in removing it. with his hands from the body of the child. On the body being examined by Mr. Swan, a local surgeon, it was found to be that of a fully-developed child, and the medical man, after applying the usual test to the lungs, was clearly of opinion: that the child had been born alive, and had had an independent circulation. Its death had been caused by four fractures of the skull, caused by a blunt instrumsnt, with which the child had been struck during its life. One of Brown's boots, stained with blood, was found to correspond with the footmarks in the mud by the river side, and a piece of carpet also stained, and found near the child's body, had been used by the side of the young woman's bed. The coroner's jury returned a verdict of "Wilful murder against Mary Brown.

LARGE EMBEZZLEMENTS BY A CLERK. At the Manchester Police-court a respectable- looking young man named William H. Dobsonhas been charged with embezzling large sums of money, amounting to about < £ 4000, belonging to his em- ployers, Messrs. Sewell, Warner, and Co., shipstore dealers and ship brokers, New-quay, Manchester. Mr. Dickinson said that the defalcations extended over a period of three years, during which time the prisoner had, unknown to his employers, been living a life of great vice and extravagance. Mr. Warner had the fullest confidence in him, and did not pay that attention to his books and accounts he would otherwise have done. In October last that gentle- man found that his assets were not equal to his liabi- lities, and he had to call his creditors together. A meeting was held, and Mr. Banner, who was employed to go through the books, reported that there were a number of items which were incapable of explana- tion. Another meeting was held, and the prisoner was called upon to explain the items referred to. He was unable to do so, and admitted having em- bezzled several sums. There were a number of items in the books of money purported to be paid to various firms with which he dealt which were entirely fictitious. He estimated the total amount of money appropriated by the prisoner at between < £ 3500 and < £ 4000. Further evidence having been taken in support of the charge, the prisoner was asked if he had anything to say. He replied that he had nothing to say except that he pleaded guilty to the charge. He was committed for trial at the sessions, bail being refused. THE JUDGES OF THE COURT OF QUEEN'S BBINCH, Ireland, have unanimously decided that Mr. FIsher, of the Waterford Mail, had been illegally in custody, and ordered his discharge. It is stated that Mr. Fisher will bring an action against Alderman Cummins, Mayor of Waterford, for malicious prose- cution—damages, < £ 10,000. A WOMAN NAMED PEACOCK, upwards of 60 years of age,' met with her death under shocking circumstances last week in Brechin. Her niece, a young girl, had called at deceased's house on Friday night, when she found her lying in a doubled-up posture by the bedside, and on some of tin? neigh- bours going in it was found that the woman's neck was broken. It is supposed that she had been stretching out of bed for something and had fallen on the floor, and thus met with her death. Dr. Mackie gave it as his opinion that the woman had been dead two days before she was discovered.
