HOUSE OF COMMONS.—On Monday the Lord Advo- cate moved the second reading of the Church Patrona^ (Scotland) Bill. Beferring to the amendment jhich Mr Baxter had put upon the paper, opposing further process with the bill, he aslied what further "1I0^ion j*ao required. He could not imagine any, and was penned to discover in the amendment simply an excuse for delay. Mr. Baxter sought to demonstrate the unfairness of a bill which placed the election of ministers in the hands of com- municants and other members of the Church congregation, they numbering in some of the Highland parishes not more than five, including the minister, his family, and his domestic establishment. .n jyTr Gladstone opposed the bill. It was not possible to mats' it acceptable by alterations in committee, he said, unless the iniative were boldly and liberally taken by the authors. The debate was continued by Mr. Eraser Mackintosh, Sir Graham Montgomery, Mr. Laing, Sir W. Stirling Max- well, Dr. Lyon Playfair, Colonel Alexander, and Mr. Leatliam.
