The Babes in the Wood.—Twins in a cradle. Shortest Thing in the World.—A professional borrower's memory. Why is an author the queerest of animals ?— Because his tail comes out of his head. Model Toast for 'Sparks.'—The following toast was pronounced at a firemen's dinner, and was received with great applause—' The ladies—their eyes kindle the only nhme against which there is no insurance!' Domestic Colloquialism.—' Ain't you almost boiled V inquired a little girl of a gentlman visiting her father and mother. « No, little one, I can't say that I am. Why do you ask, Daisy ?' Oh, because I heard mamma say your wife always kept you in hot water!' Pray, Sir.—A short time back one of the libraiians of the British Museum, passing through the King's Library, was stopped by a well-dressed man who had been examining the cases in which manuscripts and other documents relating to Wickliffe are exhibited, and was I asked by the visitors, Pray, sir, can you tell me who the Mr Wickliffe was who formed this col- lection ?' The teacher had grown eloquent in picturing to. his little pupils the beauties of heaven, and he finally asked, 4 What kind of little boys go to heaven ?' A lively little four-year-old fellow with kicking boots flonrished his fist. • Well, you may answer,' said his teacher. Dead ones shouted the little man at the top of his voice. Dumley had accompanied a friend home to dinner, and, as they seated themselves at the table, the hostess remarked, I trust that you will make allowances, Mr Dumley. My servant left me this morning very unexpectedly, and I was compelled to cook the dinner myself," Oh, certainly, my dear madam, certainly,' responded Dumley, with much emp ressem ent;' I can put up with anything On the occasion of the distribution of medals ot officers and men who had served in the Crimea, Lord MaJmesbury tells us that Mrs Norton, talking about it to Lord Panmure, asked, Was the Queen touched ?' Bless my soul, no was the reply. She had a brass railing before her, and no one could touch her.' Mrs Norton then said, I mean, was she moved?' Moved answered Lord Panmure.. She had no occasion to move.' Mrs Norton then gave it up in despair. Many years ago the only inn at Keswick was called the Cock,' and was much frequented by the visitors to the Lake Districts. But, the late excellent Bishop of Llandaff, Dr. Richard Watson, happening to reside in the neighbour- hood. and being universally esteemed and loved, the landlord, out of compliment to his lordship, changed his sign to the 'Bishop's Head.' Another inn was shortly after opened in the village, and the proprietor selected the Cock as his sign. The landlord of the old inn, finding that the rival establishment, owing to its name, threatened to deprive him of many of his cus- tomers, in consequence of the guide-books re- commending the Cock' as the best inn, wrote under the bishop's head at his door, This is the original Old Cock, to the great amusement of the bishop. A Settler.—Landlord to tenant: Good morn- ing, sir; fine day, sir. Just call round to see if it would be convenient to settle your quarter s rent ?' Do you know, landlord, that none of the doors in this house will shut ?' New house, sir; new house, you know takes time to settle.' Ah, then there's a pair of us I'm a new tenant; it takes time for me to settle too. Good morn- ing. Call again.' Managerial Uureasonableness.—A curious effect which tbe constant repetition of one part has upon an actor is that, after playing it for a great length of time, he is apt to forget his lines and take up wrong cues. A stoiy is told of an English performer who, after playing one part for a very long time, forgot his lines one night. It's very strange,' said the stageman- ager, when the actor came off, that you are not perfect in that part by this time. You have been playing it for two hundred nights.' 'Well," said the actor, do you expect me to remember it for ever ?' The Object.—' Captain and Mrs Burrell are here,' we read in Memoirs of an Ex-Minister.' The former related an amusing adventure which happened to him at Newcastle, where he was quartered. He had a severe attack of small- g>x, and was confined to his bed at the hotel, uring his illness a young lady, of fashionable appearance, with her carriage and servants, ar- rived there, intending to stay tor one night only I but, on healing that a young officer was dan- gerously ill in the same house, she expressed great interest, and, instead of leaving next morning, she announced her intention of remain- ing a few days, constantly repeating her in- quiries as to the state of the sick man. Captain Burrell was extremely touched at her romantic conduct, which he took as a persona] compliment; but, when recovering, the doctors announcing that he was safe and the lady being informed of the fact, she ordered a carriage, after telling the waiter that she was much disappointed, as her object in stopping was tc see a military funeral.' A Fine California Scheme.—A crowd of sum- mer tourists were on the beach at Los Angeles one day, watching some fancy rifle-shooting by a party of professional otter-hunters who had come over from the Channel Islands. These really wonderful marksmen, cost of them native Californians, were killing gulls on the water, breaking bottles, and hitting dollars thrown in- to the air, with great eclat, when a 'dudish'- looking young man from 'Frisco yawned in a bored manner, and remarked in a very audible voice to a companion that he did not see any- thing very wonderful in that sort of shooting. This produced a series of sarcastically polite re- torts on the part of the original lords of the soil. Perhaps the gentleman could show them something better ? Well, I don't know,' re- plied the young man; languidly taking one of the hunters' Winchesters. I might if some- body would hold a corlf or gpmething on his head for me.' The riflelBen showed their white teeth with amusement. Doubtless,' said one of them, winking at his companions—' doubtless the gentleman's friend would oblige him.' SUICIDE OF THE KING OF BAVARIA.
SUICIDE OF THE KING OF BAVARIA. King Louis, of Bavaria and his medical at- tendant, Dr Gudden, were found in the Lake of Starnberg on Sunday evening about eleven o'clock. His Majesty had gone out for a walk after dinner with the doctor, and it was not until their pifolonged absence caused some suspicion that a search was made for yiem I The hodies were removed to Berg Castle, where efforts to restore animation were continued un- til midnight but without success. The telegrams from Munich reporting the sad occurrence re- presented that the King committed suicide, and dragged Dr Gudden into the water after a des- perate struggle on the bank of the lake. Much excitement prevailed in Munich on the event becoming known, and thousands of people sur- rounded the Royal Palace, to await the publica- tion of proclamations. The deceased King's brother Otto has been proclaimed King, and Prince Luitpold Regent, as Otto is incapable of governing. ————-
KISSES BY TELEGRAPH.
KISSES BY TELEGRAPH. Weel, did ye get my letters, Jeannie V asked Jock Tamson of his buxom sweetheart, to whom he had returned after a six months' absence. 'Ay, an' yer kisses too, Jock,' said Jeannie slyly Oh, the crosses laughed Jock. They werena sae sweet kisses as thae anes, I warrant!' and he bestowed a hearty smack on her upturned face. Weel I'm no sae sure, though they've a queer like taste when they come by telegraph' said Jeannie. By telegraph,' echoed Jock in an amazed way. Ay,' returned Jeannie. Ye see, I never kent what the crosses at the fit o' your letters were for, till ae dae I speired at Jess Myers, an' she tell't me they were a. receipt for twenty kisses ye had sent to me by telegraph and that they wid -be lyin' waitin' me at the Post Office.' And ye believed her,' gasped Jock. Of course what for no ? So I gaed doon to the telegraph office, and tell't the clerk what I was expecting the best way I could. He looked puzzled kin' at first, but aifter he under stood the thing, he was rael ceevil. He took me ahint the coonter, an' put twa wee spurtle-like things into my han's, and then gar'd mee steek my e'en. Then there was a wee bit dirl gaed a' through me, and then smack cam' the first kiss then anither dirl, an' then cam' anither ane an,' I declare, I got a' the twenty in less than a twinklin'! But it's queer hoo the tele- gram took awa' the effeck of a body's whisker she added meditatively. I declare I wid nsver ha kent ye had a bristle Na, I daursay na,' said Jock, as he strode off in search of the beard less telegraph clerk. When that worthy ap- peared the next day with a patch on his left eye and his arm in a sling, he thought it necessary to explain to his friends that he had met with a severe accident in consequence of the zealous discharge of his official duties.
MR D. DAVIES, M.P., AND THE…
MR D. DAVIES, M.P., AND THE CARDI- GANSHIRE LIBERALS. In the face of the fact that so large and im- portant a section of the Liberals in the county of Cardigan as the Penmorfa and Pontgarreg United District Liberal Association has just passed, and that unanimously, a resolution in favour of the public conduct and policy of Mr D. Davies, M.P., it is very certain that the so- called County Liberal Committee does not re- present the true feeling existing amongst the Cardiganshire constituents, the large majority of which (as the hon. gentleman himself recently asserted) are loyal Unionists. The wording of the resolution referred to was as follows, and its unmistakeableness in Mr Davies's favour speaks for himself :—' That this association de- sires to express its high appreciation of the valu- able services rendered to the Liberal cause in Wales in general, and in this county in particu- lar, by Mr David Davies, M.P., and regrets to hear that, owing to bodily affliction, he does not intend, to contest the seat at the next election, and sincerely trusts he will soon be restored to his usual health.' In acknowledging the receipt of this resolution, Mr Davies remarked that his conduct in Parliament was at all times prompted and governed by strict honesty and conscientious ness, an opinion which the constituents at large are, doubtless, fully prepared to endorse.
A HIGHLY-FAVOURED DOCTOR.
A HIGHLY-FAVOURED DOCTOR. About a month ago a London physician had a telegram from the wife of a noble patient at Cannes Come for consultation fee £ 1,000." The great doctor replied Anxious cases can not come." Her ladyship seems to have thought that tbi.^ was but a wa) of making a better bar- gain for she increased her offer in four succes- sive telegrams, till the last read Come at once — £ 5,000." While the five telegrams and replies were being sent backward and forward the "anxious cases" considerately died or got better; so our doctor in his last reply wired 'Coming." After he had seeft his patient at Cannes, my lady inquired what was the fee. He said All the Riviera doctors with English clients met and fixed the fee for a consultation—the consult- ant coming expressly from London—at £ 1,000." A check for £1,000 was accordingly presented to him. Calling on his way to his train next day, merely to say good-by and inquire after his pa- tient, the lady handed him an envelope not to be opened till by and by." The doctor said "I have had my tee. This visit is not professional, but complimentary but being told to put the envelope in his pocket, he did so. Later on he found it contained a check for £ 500, a sum which had no particular relation to-the telegra- phic bids. Nor is this all. Four checks came on successive days, their united value being £3,500, all signed by her ladyship; and at the bank letters were received preparing the cashier for their presentation. The doctor wrote, saying he had had his fee and could take no more. He offered to return £4,000 or distribute it amongst useful institutions. As the money was left in his hands he adopted the latter course, with the result that £1,000 was given to the Medical Examination Hall. £1,000 to each of two hos- pitals, and £1,000 to one of the medical insti- tutes.—" London Truth."
