The Company has been formed for tha purpose of acquiring and working the mining rights owned by the Crawshay Syndicate, Limited, in which the first seven Directors are Shareholders in the Iron Ore Properties situate in the neighbourhood of the well- known Somorrostro district (Bilbao, Spain, and con- sisting of the following (1) Larrea Cecilia 4 Pertenencias equal 40,000 (2) Salvadora Emilia 18 do 180,000 (3) Carlotta 12 do 120,0U0 (4) Damasia of the Larrea Cecilia 7'5 do 73,000 Square metres 413,000 Or about equal to 102 acres in extent. The Syndicate hold a Lease of eighty per cent of the mines from the original denouncers for a period of fifteen years, from the 15th March, 1890, renewable for any number of like periods of fifteen years, as the Syndicate may consider desirable, but the lea-e is terminable by the Syndicate on its being proved that the property cannot be reasonably or remuneratively worked. The Royalty is five reals per 1016 kilogrammes, equal to about one shilling per ton of Iron Ore, pay- able quarterly, with a minimum quantity of 10,000 tons per annum. Considerable works of investigation have been in progress revealing an extensive deposit of mineral, of the well-known Rubio Avenado" quality. The property has been inspected and reported upon by Messrs Foster, Brown and Rees, the eminent Mining Messrs Foster, Brown and Rees, the eminent Mining Engineers, of Cardiff and London. The following, extraeted from their exhaustive report, dated 24th October, 1891, will serve to illustrate the more salient points of interest to the Company. EXTRACTS. So far as can be seen by explorations made by the Syndicate and from the working of adjoining mine owners, there are three lodes, or veins, of brown Hasmatite Iron Ore traversing the property, viz The Carlotta Vein, the Modesta Vein, and the Santa Regina Vein." "The Santa Regina Vein is the vein which has had devoted to it the principal attention of the Syn- dicate, and it is upon this vein that the trials and explorations have chiefly been made. This was in consequence of the openings npan the vein in the adjoining Santa Regina mine, south of the Larrea Cecilia, aad the Demasia of the Larrea Ceeilia, and from which the vein obtains its name." At the Santa Regina Mine, four galleries or tiers of workings have been opened upon this vein, giving a total depth of deposit of 260 feet, the vein stui showing its full width in the floor of the bottom gallery. Taking these galleries from top to bottom I would give an average width of 7 metres for a total height of about 79.2 metres." The ore in these galleries appeared of good quality." The crop of the vein can be traced over the surface, although affected by a fault, to the south- west corner of the Larrea Cecelia mine where the Syndicate have put down a bore hole. wholly in ore to a depth of 20 metres, and this hole left off in ore. A pit has been sunk on the site of this bore- hole, about 7 metres deep, showing the ore to be ol good quality. For about 40 metres to the north the crop can be traced from the Jast-mentioned point, I then for about 100 metres there is no visible indica- tion of the crop, although the vein undoubtedly exists but after passing this short blank the crop is again distinctly visible, passing northwards through the Demaeia of the Larrea Cecilia, for a length of nearly 300 metres, where the crop of the vein obliquely intersects the boundary line between the DQmasia of the Larrea Cecilia and the Teresa mines the latter lying to the west of the former. For about 100 metres the crop crosses the ground belonging to the Teresa mine, and then passes again to the Demasia of the Lirrea Cecilia. Near where the rop first crosses the boundary the Syndicate have put down a bore hole No 6, which struck ore at 8.16 metres from the sur- face. This hole was continued through ore to a thickness of 3üA1 metres when it evidently struck the under wall of the vein which here has an inclina- tion to the eastward, and, consequently, the lode does not lie in a perpendicular position." "In close proximity to this borehole a shaft, 1'70 metres long, by one metre wide, has been sunk. This shaft struck ore at a depth of 4! metres, and is down a total depth of 25! metres, wholly ore the mineral still being in the bottom. We in- spected this shaft, and took samples of the ore for analysis." Ffom the bottom of the shaft a heading lias been driven to the west, It metres to the bound n-y, where it was stopped in ore, and to the east 8 metres to the upper wall of the vein. The vein would therefore have a width of at least, from the Western Boundary of the property, of 11'2 metres." "In estimating the quantity of mineral underlying the syndicate property, we think it will be wise not to take into account any ore that may be proved and found in the Carlotta and Mo,testa Veins, as we con- I sider that they have not been sufficiently explored. The estimate will therefore be confined to the Santa Regina Vein." This vein we think may be assured to run through the property (as it appears to exist with great regu- larity) for a distance of 700 metres, and we think that it would be safe to estimate an average width of 7 impetus. metres as proved in the Santa Regina Mine. As to depth of ore, a total depth of 80 metres can be seen at Santa Regina." We therefore have 700 x 7 x 80 equals 392,000 C. metres, and it is fair we think to estimate that there will be '2! tons to the cubic metre of 980,000 tons, of 2 which 80 per cent or 780,000 tons belong to the Syn- dicate." We h ve had the samples of ore taken by us as before Indicated analysed by Messrs It. W. & A. J. Atkinson, and we have reccive<i from them the result as follows, but we woul<i wish to remark that although the sample marked "I.TR. No 1" appears to con- tain an excessive proportion of Silica, still this in our opinion, is not of so much consequence, as we believe it to arise from the quantity of cL-ty, y matter attaching to the Ore from its neinsf taken from a water course in the vein existing locally at the spot where the sample was obtained. I.T.R. No 1. Iron In Ore dried at 212 degrees Far. 50.70 per cent Silica do do 11' 78 do Sulphur do do 0.023 do Phosphorus do do 0'027 do I.T.R. No 2. Iron in Ore dried at 212 degrees Far 57'78 per cent Silica do do 4'01 do Sulphur do do 0'017 do Phosphorousdo do 0'020 do The approximate cost of production wouli be as follows Working the Ore 8 reals per ton Dead work removing toppage, &c 2 do Incline & conveyance to railway 3 do Railway tolls, as proposed by the Luchana, Company and by the Cadagua Company, Includ- iilg tipping 8 do 21 Royalties 5 do Administration 2 do Incidentals, including compensa- tion to the Surface Owners 1 do Or total cost free on board 29 do Or a total cost of about six shilliner per ton free on board in Bilbao River. This estimate is assuming that an output av ilabte for sale (,f 10,000 tons a year as a minimum quntity be worked but of course, with an output of double, or more than this quantity, the cost would be less, probably not more than five shillings and four- pence to five shillings and sixpence per ton." The present selling p I ice of this quality ore f.o.b. in Bilbao River is about eight shillings and three- pence per ton, and the present cannot by any means be considered an inflated state of the market. The low- eat price for many years has not been below about ten shillings per ton." Taking an average output of ore available for sale by the Syndicate of 30,000 tons a year, a work- ing cost of five shillings and sixpence per ton free on board, and a selling price of eight shillings per ton, the Syndicate would receive a profit of two shillings and sixpence per ton, or JS3,750 a yea, for twenty- six years from the Santa Regina Vein alone." "We think that a capital of .£10,000 would be sufficient to open and develop the mines, and would li'ave a sufficient margin for working capital and tor contingencies." With the capital named we have every confidence that the working of the mineral resources of the pro- perty will realize the results indicated." (Signed) FOSTER, BROWN, & REES. Cardiff, 24th October, 1891. Estimating the output of thd mines at not exceed- ing the quantity indicated by Messrs Foster, Brown and Rees. there is by their figures from the one vein alone sufficient to pay 18i per cent. on the whole of the capital of the Company, but there is every pros- pect that a large increase upon the estimated output will be realised, this will it is hoped, tend to hand- somely augment the dividend, and that quite inde- pendently of any profit which may hereafter be derived from tile Carlotta and Modesta Veins. The following mines in the neighbourhood of Bil- bao have been very successful, as appears from the following particulars extracted from Burdett's Official intelligence, showing some of the profits :— The Somorrostro Iron Ore Co., Ld." Dividends—1836-7 40 per cent 1887-8 46 1888-9 „ 65 1889-90 „ 85 "The Consett Spanish Ore Co., Ld." Divides-1883 „ 22i per cent. 1ë84 „ 410 (No later information is recorded, but it is believed the Dividends have steadily improved this view is confirmed by the figures ot the Consett Spanish Ore Co., Ld.) Rubro Iron Ore from its excellence for the manu- facture of Steel and its behaviour in the nlast furnace is in increasing demand, not only in the United Kingdom but in Germany, Belgium, France, and the United States. The Hil uao Maritimo y Commercial Revista Seminal" of 10th January 1«91, gives the exports of Iron Ore from Bilbao in 1879 as 1,117,836 tons, by 1890 it shows the trade had steadily developed to 4,372,918 tons, nevertheless it is believed Iron Masters find great difficulty in ob- taining an adequate supply of suitable ore. It must be admitted a practically unlimited demand is likely to permanently exist for mineral for the best class of Iron and Steel, and as there is evidence of the exhaustion of the better qualities of ore at Bilbao, the prospects of fair market prices for the output of the Company's mines may be well assured. Mr Josiah T. Smith, President of the British Iron Trades Association, in dealing with the Iron Ore Resources of fepatn in his paper read before the Association in May, 1889, summing up the probable quantities available, states Tnis would meet the present demand along with the ores of S imorostro for perhaps twenty years. That, however, althouuU so remote as to get rid of auy immediate apprehension of an ore famine, is not a long period in the history of an industry like the Iron Trade, and if the eon- sumption of ores of this description should increase, there is the prospect of a material reduction in the lite ot the Bi bao Ores." Alternative routes offer for the transport of the mineral from the mines to the place ef shipment. (1) By the inclines already at work from adjacent mines to the Cadagua Railway. (2) By means of the private Railway of the Luchana Mining Company, Limited. The latter is preferred by the Engineers as con- necting the mines direct with the Shipping Wharf. The communication witn the Kegato depot of the Luchana Company's Railway being obtained by the erect-on of an Incline and an Aerial Tramway. Very little time need be expended in the erection ¡ of the Aerial Tramway, and in getting the mines nto full working order. ■ "9 Price k0 paid the Vendors for their property 13 £ b,0o0; payable < £ 2,000 in cash ,• and £ 4,000 in fUiIy paid-up shares. The Vendors pay the pre- liminary expenses of the Company up to the date of aloLmeat. The only agreement entered into his one between the Crawshay Syndicate, Limited, and Richard Henry Marsh, on behalf of the Company, dated the Tw llty-second day of February, 1892, the same, to- gether with the Engineer's Report, Memorandum and Articles of Association, and plans of the mines can be seen at the Offices ot the Company. Application for Shares should be made on the Form accompanying the Prospectus, and forwarded with the amount of the deposit to the Bankers or the Secretary. It the whole amount applied for be not allotted the surplus paid on deposit will be appropriated towards the amount due on allotment. Wnere no allotment is made, the deposit will be returned in full. Prospi ctuses and Forms of application can be obtained at the Offices of the Company, or of the Bankers and Solicitors. Cardiff, February 22nd, 1892. ITT&IIC SOTTAS. Being the owner of considerable property in the town, our interests are identical.
