JOHN P. THOMAS, M.P.S., PHARMACEUTICAL AND DISPENSING CHEMIST, (BY EXAMINATION.) 5, GREAT DARKGATE STREET, ABERYSTWYTH;
THE COMMERCIAL fc GRAMMAR…
THE COMMERCIAL fc GRAMMAR SCHOOL The annual meeting for the distribution of prizes at the above school took place this year on Friday evening, Jane 22nd. Mr Evan Evans, solicitor, occupied,the chair, and addressed a few words of advice and encouragement to the boys. Mr Davies, the examiner, and Mr J. H. Edwards, Great Dark. gate-street, also spoke, and congratulated the school upon its success. The list of prizemen in the various subjects was read, and the prizes distributed. As upon former occasions, the prises were awarded after a searching examination, conducted by a gentleman not connected with the school. This year the Rev J. M. Davies, B.A., of the University College of Wales, a graduate of the London Univer- sity, and a gentleman who had lor many years en- gaged in the practical work of education, examined the school, and reports as follows :—"I examined the pupils of the Commercial and Grammnr school, Aberystwyth, last week, and beg to present the fol- lowing report on the results of the examination papers were set in English, arithmetic, algebra, Euclid, Greek, Latin, French, English history, geo- graphy, and Scripture. The English subjects in. cluded grammar and analysis of sentences, with special reference to Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, and Merchant of Vt nice. The general work oi the school as well as the 'particular work dene in English proves that the labour bestowed on this subject is in due proportion to its importance. The seniors did superior work in grammar, and were quite at home in the parsing and analysis of diffi- cult passages from Shakespeare. The juniors also did satisfactory work, all of them obtaining more than hall the maximum number of marks. The mathematical subjects included aritlimetioj algebra and Euclid. The papers in arithmetic were ofea high order throughout the school. The papers of the juniors showed very good results in elementary algebra, while most et the seniors also did no less satisfactory work in higher algebra. The school as a whole does not stand quite so high in Euclid, but t' perhaps the comparative exc. Ilenee of the arithmetic and algebra papers may account in some degree for this deficiency. Tue classical work included Greek and Latin grammar with Cffisar, book I, and Virgil's Eaeid book II. The work on the whole was quite equal to what might be expected of be- ginners. The pupils who took the Greek paper shewed fair knowledge of the accidence. The answers in Latin grammar were much superior, and indeed highly satisfactory. A little more attention to composition would make the instruction in Latin very efficient. The translations from Cnsar and Virgil were in every way creditable, the good idio- matic English of several of the papers suewing great ability on the part of the pupils. The geography of the seniors was specially commendable, both for accuracy and extt-at ut knowledge. The junior divi. sion also acquitWii themselves very crtditably. The English history of the senior class was but fair, and should receive greater attention in the future, but the juniors on the whole did fairly well in this subject. Both seniors and juniors did well in Scripture history. In French the grammatical questions were accurately answered, and the trans- lations very creditably rendered. Two of the senior boys, viz. J. M. Dayies and John Owens de. serve special mention, as they obtained very nearly the maximum number of marks in almost every paper. The results of the examination as a whole leave the impression of much honest and thorough work. The great constancy in the altainmenlS ot pupils belonging to the same class is clear evidence of the honesty of the teaching. The high character of the work in English and mathematics deserves special praise, and cannot fail to recommend the school to all who are preparing themselves for commercial pursuits. At the same time it would be difficult to think of a place better adapted to the capabilities of children entering upen the study of Freaob, Latin and Greek. In fact the school takes up the whole range of subjects just at the point where the fkmentary schools leave off, and in this respect supplies an acknowledged want in our system of education. J. M. Davies, B.A. (London), late scholar of the University College of Wales, June 27th, 1883." The following is the list of prisemen in the various classes :-For general attainments in all subjects: John M. Davies, Chalybeate-terrace; and John Owens, Queen-street. English Grammar and Analysis: Higher Senior, T. H. Jones, Terminus Hotel; Lower Senior, John Jones, Llangwyryion; Junior, A. T. Kaio, Barracks. English History Senior J. D. Williams, Mary- street; Junior, John Williams, N ..rtb .parade. Latin: Higher Senior, D. W. Richards, Great Darkgate- street; Lower Senior, R. E. James, Queen'a-road Junior, John Rees, Queen-street, and David Benjamin, Bortb, equal. Arithmetic: Senior, David Edwards, Llangwyryfon Junior, H. J. Mollyneaux. Queen's-street. Greek: Junior, Jas. Jones, Llancynfelin. Algebra and Euclid: John Roberts, Festiniog. Scripture History, Senior, M. H. Davies, Llanafan Junior, J. H. LI. Jones, Llwynglas, Talybont. Geography Senior, Meurig Thomas, Great Darkgate-street; Junior, D. J. James, Powell-sireet. French J. H. Edwards, Terraoe-road. Orthography and Writing Senior, Ivor Davies, Troedybryn Honse Junior, R. D. Davies Powell-street. Book-keeping (single and double entry) Thomas Jones, Gray's Inn Lane. Good conduct and perseverance (awarded by the vote of the school to) Johu Jenkins, Great Dark- gate-st. After the list had bceu read,the boys heartily cheered Mr Evans, the chairman, Mrs Evans, who was also present, and Mr Edwards, Great Darkgate- street, who had this year again each given a prize to be competed for by the school. The Master then referred to the general state of the school, and re- marked that it still continued to flourish, and that several pupils bad been successful in the course of the year; ene had passed the examination for the Queen's scholarship at the Bangor Training Col. lege two otbershad entered the Llangollen Theo- logical College, one At the head of the lilt; oite had gone to St Aidan's, Birkenhead, another to St David's, Lampeter, and another to the University College of Wales, and were progressing very favourably. As usual, however, the majority of the boys entered situations where no examinations were required, aud he was happy to find out that they these were doing well and giving every 8atis- faction to their employers. The boys having given three heBrty cheers to the chairman, examiner, and visitors, separated for their mid-summer holi- days, after they had joined together in singing the national anthem at the request of the chairman. The school re-opens on Monday, August ólh.
