MAC ADAM, BROTHERS & CO., ENGINEERS, SOHO FOUNDRY, BELFAST, after Twenty Years of experience, have brought their improved TURBINE to great perfection. It is applicable to all practicable heights of fall, giving much greater power from the water than any kind of Water-wheel. On Low Falls it has the great advantage of not being impeded by floods or back water. It is particularly well adapted for situations where the quantity of water is variable, and where all other Wheels fail. Its motion is extremely regular, and, when desired a Governor can be applied effectively. This Wheel is at work in a great many places, of which reference will be given. ELECTRICITY IS LIFE. ABERYSTWYTH WORKHOUSE.
ABERYSTWYTH WORKHOUSE. On Friday, the 29th ultimo, the inmates of the above workhouse (42 in number) were regaled with a generous repast, given by a kind lady, to whom they are annually indebted for a similar treat, as well as other kindnesses. The children, after making an advantageous dis- 0 play of their masticating powers, sang some pieces very creditably, in their characteristic way, to the gratification of the ladies present. In the evening the children amused themselves at playing, confa- bulating, and singing, and thus came a very pleasant day to a close, leaving behind it a flame of gratitude in the hearts of those who are, to a great measure, deprived of the luxuries and freedom of life that many others enjoy. It is comforting to those of our fellow-creatures who are the unfortunate subjects of adverse circumstances—those who are emaciated with sickness, benumbed with age-those who are deprived of the fond smile of a parent-to know that .there are hearts kindled with benevolence, who willingly forego the ease of the couch and the bright- ness of their commodious apartments at home to breathe comfort into the breasts of the aged and orphan, and to assuage their miseries. It is a serious fact that poverty still abounds, and like a grim monster it spreads its black, cheerless wing over the shattered panes and dismal abodes of the poor; it rends many a heart with anguish; it brings the hoary hairs of the widowed mother with sorrow to the grave! May God increase the number of those agents of love, and may they be endowed with that charity that never faints in seeking its objects; that charity that has, ere this, climbed the summits of the Alps, travelled the cold regions of Mount Hecla, braved the perils of the ocean, amid the floating rocks of Greenland, borne the scorching heat of the Arabian desert beneath a vertical sun, traversed the plains of Hindostan, visited alike the ward where burning fever raged and the busy streets and haunts of the crowded city. We say again, may such as have this charity, as well as means, be multiplied, and then our country will wear a different appearance gal- lies will be less peopled, jails will be less crowded, church-yards will be less visited, sighs will be ex- changed for singing, and thorny pillows will be made easy.—JOHN LLOYD GRIFFITH*.
