The marvellous effect of this fine medicine upon the system is such as to immediately rally all the, vilal functions, the appetite ;s soon restored, a full flow of spirits quickly follows, the body becomes immensely invigorated with a certainty of restored health: fresh air and a little exercise are necessary to bring about a permanent state of things. Apoplexy can aiways be prevenied if the proper action. of the bowels be attended to, w hic.li this frt on his medicine never fails to accomplish. Disorders of the head and heart often terminate suddenly and fatally from obstructions lu the system, which might generally be prevented by taking small and regular doses of this fine corrective. Female Disorders. No medicine can be so infallibly relied upon for overcoming all obstructions as these Piils. They never fail to restore a healthy action throughout tue system. The printed instructions will enable ail to correct the first symptoms of disease, and avert ruanv serious fTlailldies. iio-loway's Pilis. soon change the sickly and sallow complexion, thus renewing the bloom of heallh, To females centering into womanhood, or at the turn 01 life, these i'ills will be foMnd inv iluable.. They should be taken two or three times a week, as a safeguard against dropsy, headaches, palpitations of the heart, and all nervous affections, so distressing at cerl" ill periods. Siicte Headache, Zndig-estion or foul Stomach, and disordered Liver. In such a deranged state of health the food is decomposed instead uf bting digested, and proves poisonous rather than nu- tritious. This derangement can be at orce set right by a course o: thi se purifying and diacstive Pills, which have acquired for themselves an imperishiibie fame for the mastery they have constantly exercised over the digestive organs. Holloway's Pills increase the appetite, regulate the liver, repress bilious- ncss, healthily si insulate the kidneys and move the bowels in a more wholesome a' tl natural manner than any other medicine. Disorders incidental to Children. The liver and stomach of children are, from many causeos often out of order, as they are allowed f.o eat many tilings that would disagree with their parents, hence their btood becomes impure, and liable to take any disease that is prevalent, and that in the worst form. One Pill, reduced to a powder, and put in a little water, given occasionally to children of twelve months old, and to those of three or four years, three Pills, and to others of seven years of age four Pills —will always tnake children look looming and hea tily Seventy-five out of every hundred do not reach the age of maturity. THE NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD FOR…
THE NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD FOR 1865, AND COMPETITIVE MEETING. IN accordance with the. programme which had for some time previously been issued by the Com'.nit, tee of the Aberystwith Welsh* Literary Society, a pub- lic meeting was held on the morning of New Year's Day to consider the desirability of making the utmost efforts to secure the Eisteddfod of 1865 at Aberyst- with, to form a local committee, and arrange the necessary details. There was a good attendance of the leading tradesmen of the town present; and a large bundle of congratulatory letters from the local gentry, who were unavoidably debarred from being present, testified as to the increasing local interest taken in the national movement by the influential classes. Thomas Owen Morgan. Esq., Mayor, pre- sided, and, after a pithy speech, called upon Mr. John Griffith, (the talented Loirdon correspondent of the Baner Cyrnru,) to address the mcetiu" Mr, Griilith then, in a very lucid manner, ^ave the history of Welsh National* Ebteddfodau, espe- cially since the Eisteddiodau formerly, thronuh the influence of Lady Llanover (then Lady Hail.) held at Abergavenuy. He also explained how it was that a was formed to arrange the general affairs of tne Eisteddfod, their object being to give it a basis, and to form as it were a connecting link between the Eisteddfodau, so that the proceeds "f the one should be devoted to form the nucleus of 1L fu-d for the succeeding one. By these means it is considered that in course of time the council would be possessed of an available fnnd, provided it were- considered de- sirable to augment a worthy prize. or otherwise to assist in fostering and encouraging natjve talent. Mr. Griffith concluded his very able speech by ex- pressing a hope, which was loudly applauded, that the Eisteddfod ol A bery stwnh • won Id be a model one. I Thu Rev. Aienry i ai ry, laiyboiit, (liowel Glan Cefni,) t,l)en spoke on the subject of the Eisteddfod, expressing his opinion that it would be a grand sue- cess but, unfortunately, as the event proved, com- f promising his reputation for bardic knowledge by asserting that if the Eisteddfod were proclaimed that a"5'r t ^°ie Pr°ceedings would be a great sham. Mr. John Matthews then addressed the meeting, and, atter a few eulogistic remarks on Eisteddfodau ni general, said, that, in his opinion, the memorialists should have been first consulted as to the mode of proceeding, and then a local committee formed to act in confirinity with the instructions of the council of the Eisteddfod. Mr. Benjamin Hughes said that not only were circulars sent to as many as could be recollected had signed the memorial, but also to scores of others, thus showing that it was intended to place matters on as broad a basis as possible. Llew Llwyvo then rose to refute Cefni as to its being improper to proclaim the Eisteddfod that day and a,tor some happy allusions to Cefni's assertions that it was a sham, produced the printed volume of ioio MSS, and conclusively showed that in fact Cefni had, in the zealot an argument, been totally and most egregiously in the wrong. Mr. Matthews then produced a letter written by I the secretary of the Eisteddfod to Sir J. D. Hughes, the secretary of the Harmonic Society and Christ- mas-day Literary Meeting, stating that he should oppose the proclamation by New Year's-dav com- mittee on that day, but that he would come some day arm do it himself instead; but this proved of no avail, for Mr. Griffiths, Gohebydd, produced a letter of still later date from the council secretary, in ^Oiich the first opinion of his was withdrawn. ^After a few more passages were read, a local com- mittee (with power to add to their number) was formed, Mr. John Jones, (loan Ifon,) and Mr. Robert Jones, (Adda Fras.) being selected fts local J secretaries, and Mr. John Davies, Harbour Master, as treasurer, and T. O. Morgan, Esq., mayor, being chairman. It was then proposed, and seconded, that- a pro- cession be formed, and the Eisteddfod proclaimed, which, after passing a vote of thanks to the mayor, was immediately done. A good little band, (got tip through the praise- worthy efforts of Sergeant-Major Keily, of the Car- digan Militia,) then paraded the streets, and, fol- lowed by a large procession,' entered the Castle, where the Druidic circle had been already arranged. Llew Llwyvo then entered the circle, and proclaimed tne Eisteddfod, his clear ringing enunciation being audible^to a wondrous distance. After a few Welsh airs had been performed by the band, the interesting ceremony was complete. ° the competitive meeting Commenced at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, J. M. Davies, Esq., Antaron, Barrister-at-law, in the chair. Mr. John Williams sang with much effect "God bless the Prince of Wales." After which bardic addresses were delivered by Dewi Cyncinioo- Messrs. James Jones, and Isaac Davies. Next on the stage appeared five boys to compete in the recitation of" Y Bugail-fachgen a'r Blaidd." Prize divided between David Jones, Cwmerfin, and 1 homas Owens. Three choirs competed in the singing of" Telynau mwyn Cymru." Not one was deemed worthy of the prize, the judges remarking that they all sang for the worst and not for the best. Five little girls, under 15 years .of age, next com- peted in the recitation of" Fy Main." Prize awarded to Anne Davies, of the Old Black Lion Inn. Four competitors came forward to sing a solo part placed before them at the time. Prize awarded to John Davies, Talybont. Competition in impromptu reading next followed, when the prize was awarded to David Jones, Cwm- erfin. Three competitors appeared on the stage to com- pete for the subject on the "Benefit that would accrue to Aberystwith by liaving a National Eis- teddtod," Not, one was deemed worthy of the prize, f Llew Llwyvo and his children then sang the Spelling Lesson," which caused immense applaase, and were vociferously encored. Two choirs next competed in singing a tune at sight, and the discord produced by them caustd great merriment among the audience. A choir of children, under the leadership of Mr. Thomas Morgan, sang"Merch y Meddwyu," and obtained the prize. An impromptu address on "New Year's-day" was next competed for by three. Prize awarded to John Parry. Competition in singing" Y Fenyw Fach a'r Bibl Mawr" then took place between four little girls under 15 years of age. Prize divided between Margaret Morgan and Elizabeth Evans. After a vote of thanks had been given to the chairman, Llew Llwyvo sang the solo of" Hen Wlad fy Nhadau," and was joined in the chorus by the audience. The meeting afterwards broke up. THE concert Commenced at a quarter past six in the evening, under the presidency of Thornas-Owen Morgan, Esq., Mayor, Llew Llwyvo acting as conductor, and Mr. Robert Young, Organist of St.. Michael's, being the accompnnyist. The chorus, "Boat Song," by Briu- ley Richards, was first sung by the choir in a man- ner that was rapturously and deservedly applauded. fJJevv Llwyvo then sang-" The White Squall," and u '1 ight Little Island," which drew thunders of ap- plause. Next on the programme was a solo on the pianoforte, by Master R. S. Hughes, namely," Home. Sweet Home!" with variations. His youthful ap- pearance, coupled with the correctness of his exe- cution and management of the instrument, elicited well-merited applause. Mr. Edward Edward4 after- wards sang "Y Gadlys," (The Camp,) in a highly creditable manner. Llew Llwyvo and Miss Llwyvo Lewis sang the "Singing Lesson," which was rap- turously encored, and complied*vith. "The Lonelv Harp" was next sung by Miss Morgaa, her voice and 1 self-command being very much admitvd. •' Oh, Tell me gentle Stranger" was sting by Miss Anne Jones and Clan Adal, and were encored with enthusiasm. Miss Betsey Williams then sang "Clychau Aberdyfi," (The Bells of Aberdovey,) in a manner that could scarcely be. surpassed. "TIlP Butterfly" was next rendered by the Messrs. E. Edwards, J, Morgans, W. Samuel, and Miss M. Edwards, and wasdeservedly applauded. Thus ended the first part. The adjudications on the' Essays, Stanzas, Pen- manship, Pencil Drawing, and Congregational Tune were next read, when the prizes were awarded as follows — Essays—" History of Aberystwith and Neighbourhood," Mr. John Williams-, "Causes of Earthquakes," Mr. John Davies, Schoolmaster, Llan- badarn. Stanzas—" Welsh Coast Railway," Mr. John Lewis, Llanrhystid "Falls of the Mynach, Mr, O- M. Davies, (Owain A fan"). Penmanship- Master Edmund Harris Thomas. Pencil Drawing— Master George Hunt Thomas. Congregational Tune —Mr. Evan James, New Cross. —Mr. Evan James, New Cross. The above having been disposed of, the concert re-commenced with singing the chorus, Sweet Day so Cool," by Brinley Rieliards. with very fine effect. Morfa Rhuddlan," (The Plain of Rhyddlan,) was next sung by Llew Llwyvo in his usual, first- j class style. One of the most exciting pieces of novelty in the entertainment was the singing of "Codiad yr Hedydd," (Rising of the Lark,) by Miss Llwyvo Lewis, accompanied on the pianoforte by Master R. S. Hughes, who were rapturously applauded, and narrowly escaped an encore. Glan Adal then sang "The Village Blacksmith," with his accustomed effect, and Miss Betsey Williams, and Miss Mary Edwards sang "We are Fairies of the Sea," in a style which dt served the applause of every one pre- 'dw sent. Mr. Edward Edwards afterwards sang the solo How vain is Man who boasts in Fight," in a masterly manner, and the glee, "Life's a Bumper," was very beautifully'sung by Llew Llwyvo, Glan Adal, and Mr. William Samuel. Glan Adal then gan"- "Yr Hen Lane," (The old Bachelor, "i and was rapturously encored. Man the Lifeboat" was afterwards sung by Llew Llwyvo, in his usual first-rate style, and the ehoi us, Lhyfelgyrch Gwyr Harlech," (March of the Me-n of Harlech.) terminated the concert. At the conclusion votes of thanks were duly given I Jo the cnairman for presiding, the ladies for decorat- ing the hail, Serjeant-Major Keily for tlje use of the Ivand. and the proprietors for lending tJW hall on the occasion. After which the National Anthem was Sung, and the proceedings terminated, the audience leaving much pleased wit.h the day's entertainment Both meetings were held at the Temperance Hall, which was neatly decorated by certain young ladies and the building, though not quite finished, was all that could be expected, and promises to be a valuable acquisition to the toVvii. We are happy to inform our readers that the fol- lowing is a selection of the subjects which will be offered for competition at the Eisteddfod to be held in this town in ) SG5 :—"For the best. Essay on the OHsrin of -the English Nation, more especially with reference to the question how far the}' are descended from the Ancient Britons." Prize 100 guineas. HISTORICAL NOTES.
HISTORICAL NOTES. PTNAS POWIS, ETC ( Continued from our last.) On the summit of the bill, to the north of St. Andrew's Church, commanding a most beautiful view of the surrounding country, there are some remains of an ancient mansion, called "the Bovii,'f The former name is supposed to have been the Beau Villa, or Beau Vale; the modern building, which is now a farmhouse, stands lower dofrn, at the foot of the hill. A family of the name or Hovveiis resided here, but they are become extinct, and there is an old monument in the north side of St. Andrew's Church raised to their memory. There was formerly a private chapel belonging to this family parallel with the chancel, in which they were buried, hut that part of the church has been takcn down many years ago. There is an old tombstone still to be seen outside the Church of St. Andrew's, beating the following inscription Here lieth the body of John Gibbon James, buried the I-1th day of August, 1601, and Margaret Matthew, his wife, buried the 8th of Ja- nuary, 1631. He asred 99. She aged 124." Cer- tainly a very extraordinary age, for few persons live- tobeaoenturyoidinourdays. A mason, of the name of James Jenkins, was buried near this spot, las) year, aged 94. He possessed all his faculties tù withill a day of his death. There is an old seat cut out of the rock on the top of a hill near the church, called in Welsh "Cadairyr Essrob," the Bishop's Seat. The Rev. Dr. Hall, grandfather to the Right Hon. Lord Llanover, was rector of this parish for many years. There were several mansions in this parish. Colebrook was the restdence of the Herbert family, but the family is extinct., and the mansion has given way to a farmhouse. There was a gentle- man s residence at a place called Abercloes, but a solitary cottage marks the spot at present, Some eighty years ago it was in possession of a Rev. Gabriel Powell, a clergyman. On the south of Dinas Powis the parish of Sully is sftuated. When t itz-Hamon parted the country be gave the Lord- ship of Sully to Sir Reginald De Sully, who built the estate. There are some remains to be seen at present. Between Dinas Powis and Sully there is very large and extensive moors which were covered atonefifnehythe.-ea. The late Mr. Thomas, of SlIlIy, father of Henry Thomas, Esq., Chairman of the Glamorganshire Quarter Sessions, at a consider- able expense constructed a sea bank, which kept the sea out. For many years after this, owing to the damp arising from the moors, the inhabitants suffered from the ague. A snort, distance trom Dinas Powis. is the parish of Michaelstone-le-Pit. This parish is surrounded by hills, in the form of an amphitheatre. On a hill in this parish tbeie are some remains of an ancient British camp. There is an old tradition prevalent in this locality that on this spot Cromwell planted his cannons to destroy Dinas Powis Castle. It is evident that the castle was destroyed some centuries before Cromwell was born. It is very probable that it was destroyed by one of the Welsh chieftains whilst smarting under the galling yoke of the Normans. The Rev. John Morgan is the present respected rector of St. Andrew's, late incumbent of Llany- chaiarn and Llangwyryfon, a most kind-hearted, liberfil, and exemplary clergyman, who is always ready to succour the poor and needy. JOHN ROWLANDS, (Giraldus.) Dinas Powis, Glamorgan.

THOUGHTS ON THE DAWN OF A NEW YEAR. Oxe thousand eight hundred and sixty-three is now for ever past, One thousand eight hundred and sixty-four will fly away as fast; But whether life's uncertain scene will hold an equal pace, Or whether death will step between, and end my mortal race Or whether sickness, pain, or health my future lot will be Or whether poverty or wealth, is all unknown to me. 11 One thing I know, that needful 'tis to watch with careful eye, Smce every season spent amiss is registered on htaju Earth rolls her rapid seasons round to meet hegfflnl fire; But virtue is with glory crowned, though suns and stars expire. Ah! what an awful thought! ah! what a useful lesson this! Oh let me well improve my time, then let me die in peace. Iiheidol Cottage.
