------:Hocal information-
:Hocal information- Mr. Evan Rowlands, Surgeon, Goginan, near this town, passed his examination, creditably, on the 23rd ultimo, and was admitted a licentiate of the Apothecaries' Company, London. COL. POWELL has arrived at his seat, Nanteos, to v be ready to take command of his Regiment, called out for 21 days' training, in this town, next week; when we have no doubt the corps will sustain the reputation it, has acquired by progressive improve- ment in drill, and in their manual and platoon exercises. THE NEW CIOCK put up in the bell tower gives out its measured tones to the satisfaction of the townspeople; and now that we are getting used to it, the wonder is how we have gone on so long without it in the dark. May this be the prelude to other improvements which are much called for to make this place what it has sometimes been called, The Brighton .of Wales. FATAL ACCIDENT.—On the 27th ult., an inquest was held at near this town, before J. M. Davies, Esq., Coroner, upon the body of John Roberts, aged 35 years, a servant, at Broginan-fawr. From the evidence it appeared that the deceased's master sent him from the field with a cart laden with corn, he himseifshortly following, when to his horror he foun rI the cart upset, and the bny buried under the corn quite dead. The jury returned a verdict of Accidental Death. PUBLIC TESTIMONIAL.—We are given to under- stand that a Committee has been formed with a view of presentfng: Mr. John Evans, Schoolmaster, of this town, with a suitable testimonial for his spirited public conduct in having for the last 32 years placced. a Clock and Dial on his house, and regulating the time during that long period. Mr. John Evans, very well known as a Schoolmaster, having been the instructor of many persons now eminent for their abilities,-such as Edwards, Bala; Philipps, Bangor; Jones, Newcastle Euilyn, and others. As a teacher of Navigation most of the bailors on the coast ol Cardigan, have been, more or less, under his tuition. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.— On the 19th ultimo, Mr. Adam Smith, a member of the Society in London for the Prevent ion of Cruelty to Animals, being on a visit at Hafod, the seat of W. Chambers, Esq., delivered there a lecture on the above subject. In addition to the family of the worthy host, and a party of friends, there was a large attendance from the neighbourhood; which showed the interest taken in the subject. Mr. Smith dwelt at some length upon the duty of man to protect the brute creation, and made a strong appeal to parents, the instructions of youth, and to the pulpit. Mr. Smith concluded by stating how gratifying it was to him to have had the opportunity of delivering the lecture in the house of a lady and gentleman who had long been connected with, and were supporters of the Society. CARDIGAN.-An Awkward Dilemma.-On Mon- day last, much gossip and excitement was created in this town, by the unexpected return of a man who some years ago joined the army, and embarked for India, leaving his wife in this town. After the husband had been away about 3 years, the wife received a letter announcing his death, and of course, she then adopted the usual widow's weeds. Some time having elapsed, and she having heard nothing to contradict her husband's death or any tidings of him, the widow was wooed and won by a sturdy and industrious mechanic to whom she was married some time back. The consternation of all parties concerned may be better imagined than described when the first husband so unexpectedly "turned up," on Monday last. The wife of two husbands has returned to her father's house until some arrangement can be effected. THE EISTEDDFOD.—The Grand National Eistedd- fod for Powys commenced on Monday Evening week last, at Llangollen and on Tuesday a grand procession to the gorsedd followed, from whence an adjournment, took place to the Eisteddfod, which was continued for the three succeeding days, in a large temporary pavilion, calculated to hold 5,000 present. It was well attended and notwithstanding the wet weal her which came on, must be considered a successful endeavour to promote the study and cultivation of the poetry, music, and general litera- ture of the Cymry. Several bardic degrees were conferred, and adjudications were made, and prizes given for the subjects offered for competition. Llangollen itself was crowded with parties from all parts of Wales, and from Manchester, Liverpool, and other places. The Evening Concerts also were crowded, and gave general satisfaction. Den- bigh was fixed upon as the place for the next Eisteddfod, and the formal notice of a year and a day given, according to bardic rules. PETTY SESSIONS.—On Tuesday last, at the Town Hall, before F. R. Roberts, Esq., Mayor, and D. Edwards, Esq., John Griffiths charged Harford Lvans with letting off squibs on Sunday last in front of his house, between 12 and 1 o'clock in the morning. The Mayor said complaints were con- tinually made of the nuisance complained of, he would therefore by way of example fine defendant 5s. and 5s. costs. Lewis Morris charged Lewis Lewis with using threatening language towards him, whereby he was put in bodily fear. The defendant was ordered to enter into his own re- cognizances to keep the peace towards plaintiff fbr 3 months. Mary Griffiths charged John Jenkins with using abusive language towards her, and other- wise annoying her. The case was adjourned. COMMISSIONERS' MEETING.-An adjourned meet- ing of this body was held on Tuesday Jast, at the Town Hail,—present J. Jenkins, Esq., (in the chair), Messrs. J. M. Davies, J. Leon. R. Watkins, J. Miller, T. Cleaton, C. Hackney, T. Jones, and R. Morris. Mr. R. Watkins compiaiued of the state of the pavement on the North Parade, which wanted gravelling, and hoped that as Winter was now com- ing on it should be done, as also the Marine Terrace. The Street Committee were ordered to report on the state of North-gate Street, at the next meeting. Mr. Lewis Evans, Builder, complained of the state of the yard in Crynfryn Row, and also of the stench rising from the garden of Miss Harris, Alfred Place, in consequence of the number of pigstyes that were in them. He added that the effluvia from what he complained of was at times so great, that it was im- possible for anyone with any degree of comfort to sleep in the back part of his house. Ordered that the owners of the several places be served with a notice previous to being summoned under the Sanitary Act. It was ordered that the Clerk do write for one of the patent stench traps of Mr. Lewis, A bergavenny, with a view of having it tested as to its suitableness to this place. The question as to whether the Commissioners should take part of the yard now in the occupation of Mr. Henry White, in Newfoundland Street, was ordered to he adjourned until the next meeting The Turncock said that the main pipe which was now used for the conveyance of water to Bridge Street, was much too small, and recommended that a 6-inch pipe be laid there in place of the present one, the cost of which would be about, £ 20. It was ordered that the question be brought under consi- deration at the next meeting. LLANBADARN PETry SESSIONS.—On Wednesday last, at the Black Lion, Llanbadarn, before John Evans, and J. G. W. Bonsall, Esqrs., several Jury Lists were received and passed. Mary Hoicells charged Winifred Jones with an assault. Fined Is. and costs. The same one charged Many Mason with an assault. Fined Is. and costs. P.C. Skinner charged John Hughes with furious driving. Case dismissed. P.C. Skinner charged Edward Evans with being drunk and disorderly. Defendant not appearing, a warrant was ordered to be issued for his apprehension. TOWN HALL, ABERYSTWITH.-On Thursday last, before T. 0. Morgan, and L. Pugh, Esqrs., Thomas Richards, of Llanbadarn, Carrier, was brought up by P.C. Skinner, who charged him with I using threatening language to deter him from his duty. Ordered to enter into sureties Cor his good behaviour. WELSH AND OTHER RAILWAYS.—From a tabular return moved for by Mr. Lowe, M. P., just printed, showing the financial position of every railway in the United Kingdom, it appears that the author- ised capital of the Llanidloes and Newtown line is £ 60,000, of which £ 32,437, is paid up, and £3J,fi28 has been expended in railway works, preliminary expences, &c. There is power to borrow jE20,000, but this has not been exercised. The capital of the Oswestry and Newtown line is fixed by the act at £ 250,000, of which £ 65,490 is paid up the borrowing power extends to £ 63,000, hut no money has as yet been borrowed. Theexpen- diture amounts to £ 39,162. The authorised capital of the Shrewsbury and Hereford line, which is leased to Mr Brassey, the contractor, is £ 675,000, of which £417,970 is paid up, and (except jE46,270, which receives a preferential dividend of 4| per cent) pays 4 per cent to the shareholders. The loan power is JE225,000, and has been availed of to the extent of JE150,000, upon which interest at rates varying from 4 to 5 per cent, is payable. The expenditure has been X,,581,550, being £ 13,580 in excess of the total amount which, at the end of 1857, has been raised by shares and loans. This concern was amalgamated last year with the London and North Western Company, to which it was transferred by lease in perpetuity, taking effect from March 1st, 1857. ANNUAL MEETING OF THE INDEPENDENTS -The Independent Connexion held their Annual Meeting in this town on Thursday last, when sermons were delivered by the nevds. Mr. Jenkins, Brynmawr; Mr. Rees, Kendle; Mr. Stephens, Dwygvfylchi; and Mr- Ambrose, Portmadoc. There were numer- ous audiences, and the discourses were eloquent and impressive. .1Ij TOWYN, MERIONETH. PLOUGHING MATCH AND CATTLE SHOW.—On Friday la6t, a meeting was held at the Corbet Arms Hotel, Mr- R. Price, of Bronprys, in the chair, to take into consideration the day for holding the Annual Plouiihinu Match and Cattle Show. The committee of management fixed the 26th of October j but after senond enns'deratinn. the day is uncertain, it being the com. mencement of the Aberystwith Hum. V.'eek.
