Griffiths with being drunk and disorderly. Fined 5s. Hugh W illiams charged Enoch Jones with an assault. Fined Is. and costs. Elizabeth Jones charged Ann Richards with using abusive language towards her. Both parties bound over to keep the peace towards one another for 6 months. COMPLETION OF THE TURRET & CLOCK.'—We have now the infinite pleasure of congratulating our fel- p now the infinite pleasure of congratulating our fel- low>fcQwnsmen on the completion of the Town Clock. Perbapsut would not be out of place here to state that the jWsent Turret was commenced in 1856, on the site of tHHpId Town Hall, the ground of which was liberally grannsd by Col. Powell. It has been built by public subscription, at a cost of about j £ 900; is about 66 feet highj^nd 15 feet wide at the base; and the structure, b g in the Italian style, is really ornamental as well useful, and reflects great credit upon the designed Mr. E. Trevor Owen. Li- verpool, and the builder, 3*r. Roderick William's, of this town. The Clock, &c., is the gift ot^heFamily atGoger- ddan. It has four dials, whichbeautifully illu- mated. It was manufactured by Messrs. Russell "on, of Liverpool, and is considered to be not onljKthe largest, but the best clock in Wales. The beUX^e^Sbing 500!bs ,) is of a fine tone, and is from the cefebrated foundry of Messrs. Mears & Co., London),casters of the first Big Ben of West- minster. The Clock was set a-going for the first time at 9 o'clock on tfi^eveniug of Thursday last, in the pre- sence of thousands who had congregated together (although the wfeather was unfavourable) to witness the sight. Tar \arrels, sky rockets, blue balls, squibs, crackers, were carried and thrown about, and everything doneXo manifest the joy of the in- habitants on the auspii^jous occasion. RARE SPoRT.-On Monday, the 20th instant,Col Powell, of Nanteos, whHe shooting over parts of three farms in this neightiburhood, killed with his own gun twenty brace and a'half of partridges and fa two rabbits; and on the foltbwiog day, over the same ground, nineteen brace of partridges, three hares, and two rabbits! COUNTY COURT—The usual monthly Court for this district was held on Tuesday last, at the Town Hall, before Edward Humphreys, Esq., Deputy Judge. There were about 134 cases entered, most of which were settled out of court, and were com- pletely devoid of public interest, excepting perhaps that of The Aberystwith Gas and Coke Company v. John Kenrich. Mr. Atwood appeared for plaintiffs, and Mr. Willoughby Miller for defendant. Mr. Atwood in opening the case said, that in 1854 the plaintiffs engaged defendant as their Manager and Engineer, at a weekly salary of 26s., payable monthly; cottage and garden rent free. The de- fendant when engaged had signed an agreement to give the Company three months notice previous to leaving their employ; but there was no stipula- tion of the kind in case the Company should wish to discharge defendant. Plaintiffs kept the defen- dant in their employ up to a recent period, when they discharged him, and engaged another in his stead. Tthe Company taking into consideration the defendant's having a large family, and not be- ing perhaps in the best circumstances, offered him a month's salary after he was discharged. He however refused to accept that offer, and would not give up possession of the house and garden which he held of the Company as tenant at will, stating that he was entitled to three months' notice prior to dismissal. The plaintiff's made him a second offer of fg 5s. on condition that he would give up possesion of the house as desired, which he also re- fused and the present action was brought to recover possession of the cottage, &c., which he submitted the defendant as tenant at will was bound to give lip. Mr. Miller in defence said that, admitting the fact of an agreement, having been entered into by the Company and defendant, was it reasonable that if a man was obliged to give three months' notice prior to leaving an employ, he was not entitled to re- ceive the same previous to his being dismissed? The Judge then interfered, and said he thought the tenancy or the coitage was at will, and he would therefore give a verdict for plaintiffs, they of course taking the resporisibility of any action which might be brought against them by the present defendant for the recovery of three months' salary. Mr. Miller gave the Judge notice of appeal against the verdict, considering the question as one of importance.

-ö- TOWYN, MERIONETHSHIRE. THE BEST YEI\—In three former numbers of the Observer" we noticed that several large potatoes had been grown in the neighbourhood of Aberyst- with, the largest of which weighed 22 oz. A potatoe weighing 27 oz., grown by Mr. Thomas Beddoes, of Towyn, may be seen at the house of Mr. A. Hunt, Chapel Street, Towyn! ANGr.ING.-On Thursday se'nnight, a gentleman from Aberystwith. staying at Towyn, caught with a fly in the Pontfathew brook, near this town, 106 trout. On the Saturday following, he had capital sport in the Dysynni.-Two nice sewing, a trout weighing two pounds, and a good dish of smaller fry. Excellent sport has been had since the late rains. Hundreds of fish are gone up the river. FAIR.-On Friday weekiasttheannuu) September fair was held. The attendance of drovers was rather numerous. The supply of cattle was not large, as in former years. Three-year old bullocks sold at from £ 11 to £ 12. Two-year old steers fetched from £ 8 to 1£9. Milch cows £ 12. Horses were scarce, the supply not being equal to the demand. Pigs were cheap. Cow FIRM ATION.—The Lord Bishop of Baiig-or lteld the sacred rite of confirmation inSt.Cadfan'sChurch, in this town, on Tuesday last. The number of candidates were only about thirty. ABERDovEY.—LAUNCH—On Friday week last, a Stumer was successfully launched ffomthebuifd- ing yard of Mr. Roger Lewis. The ceremony of christening was performed by Mrs. Jones, of Trefri, (the iadyof one of the principal owners,) who, as the Steamer.,glided gracefully into her future ele- ment, wished\jBuccess to the Quarry-maid." It was the first Steamer built in this part of the Princi- pality. Great invest was naturally felt on the oc- casion. We trustV-hat the labours of the few spirited owners will ptove successful, and that the vessel may have safe.XprontabIe, and prosperous voyages. We understand that she is intended to ply between London and Aberystwith, and Liver- pool and Aberdovey. A dtttner in honor of the occasion took place at the Corbel Arms Hotel, where about 80 gentlemen and others gt4t down to a most beautiful repast, got up in splendidhstyle by the new landlord and his sister, Mr. and i s Pritchard. Toast and song went merrily round, Tmd a jovial afternoon was spent.

Lines suggested by the sudden…
Lines suggested by the sudden Death of a Lady at Aberystwith, SEPT. 8TH, 1858. 'T WAS Sabbath eve;—the Pastor's glorious theme Thanksgiving was, and earnestly he strove T' enkindle in the people of his charge The flames of grateful love;—on many an ear His words unheeded fell, they failed to pierce The icy unconcern the soul which cased. But one there was whose heart to each appeal Responsive beat, well-tuned to such discourse. In outward seeming, as she left the Fane, Was none more likely than herself t' appear Again within its sacred walls. Three day* Had nearly passed, the lady knew those doors That eve would be unclosed, and purposed there To wend her joyful steps; but ere the strains Of prayer and praise uprose from that small band Of worshippers, her soul had been conveyed Through gates of pearl unto the Temple fast, High, and refulgent, where the saved of earth Blend in extatic songs with angel choirs. Oh let those sorrowing sisters from whose side The loved one hath unwarned been caught away, Clasp to their hearts the thought that sudden death" To her was "sudden glory;" all the pains, Th' unrest, the feebleness, the sad farewells. Which haunt the dying couch, she hath been spared. Tho mortal friend was none in that still room, Where to her side with stealthy step drew nigh The king of dread, One waited to receive The unclothed spirit in His arms of love; And as he upward bore it, seemed to say, All ye behind who tarry, "watch and pray."
CORRESPONDENCE.
CORRESPONDENCE. THE INVISIBLE BLUES. To the Editor of the" Aberystwith Observer." SIR,-A few nights ago several knockers, bell- pulls, name-plates, and ether door furniture were removed by some empty-pated fools" out for a lark." Of course none of the police were about, so the mischievous snobs—for any people who are guilty of such acts are snobl-escape detection and punishment, and the unfortunate sufferers can obtain no redress. In the old time, when the town was left to the guardianship of two old men, the inhabitants did not expect very great vigilance from them, and quietly put up with many annoyances, in the hope that a better system would one day be established but with the new police force they naturally thought matters would mend, and that the order and peace of the town would be well preserved. Experience however has shewn that the town is very little better off under the new system than the old for if there is anything wrong at any time requiring the presence of the representatives of the law, those gentlemen prove by their absence their undoubted 11 right to the title which I have put at the head. of this letter. The corners of our streets are still blocked up by blackguard idlers, to whom the authoritative move on" is never applied; our knockers are stolen, and we are left to « grin and bear it;" bullies can roam about insulting the passers by without being called to account; and on Sabbath mornings the disgusting spectale is frequently to be seen of drunken men reeling about without any steps being taken to ascertain where they obtained the means of getting into such a degraded state. All these things take place, and yet people pay county and police rates; and it is titae the attention of the public should be called to the matter, in the hope that by its exposure the abuse may be re- moved. I am, Sir, Your obedient Servant, X. Y. Z.
