-F ilorat fitforinatton. IN a leading article in the" Times," of last Tuesday, on the recent public enquiries into the Comparative mortality of the different districts of lEngland, Aberystwith, as to one class of diseases, cholera and other bowel complaints, is stated from the return by Dr.Greenhow to be the healthiest town in England, and Liverpool the most unhealthy. This fact speaks volumes in favor of our town as a place of retirement and resort; and, accordingly, we shall expect to see this place full of Visitors during the warm weather now experienced, and which may be presumed likely to continue during the appearance of the Comet. ABERYSTWITH HORSE, CATTLE, AND GENERAL SEPTEMBER FAIR was held on Thursday last. The supply was short, and consequently few exchanged hands. Probably the fine weather for the harvest was the cause. THE NEW CLOCK.-Workmen have arrived, and are engaged in putting up the Clock. It promises to be a real boon to the town. It bears the in- scription of the Gift of the Family at Gogerddau, 1858." COAST GUARDS.—Capt. Tatham, R. N., attended at this town on Thursday last, to receive names for the Coast Volunteers; the members of which corps are gradually increasing. THE ROYAL CARDIGAN MILITIA AND RIFLE CORPS have received orders to assemble in this town for 21 days training on the 5th of October, under the command of Col. Powell. GRAND HARP ENTERTAINMENT.—Mr. Ellis Ro- berts, Harpist to the Prince of Wales, gave one of his series of Harp Entertainments at the Public Rooms, on Thursday evening last, to a numerous and respectable audience, in which he was assisted by Llew Llwyfo, a Welsh bard. The entertainment went off well. INQUEST.—An inquest was held on the 6th inst., at Goginan, near this town, before J. M. Davies, Esq., Coroner, and a respectable jury, upon view of the body of William Davies, Farmer, Troedyfron, Cwmrheidol, aged 66 years. From the evidence of the deceased's wife, it seems he went to bed on the evening of the 5th inst. at his usual time, and in the enjoyment of good health. About 1 o'clock in the morning he was noticed to be very uneasy. She thinking he was dreaming, endeavoured to arouse him; but he did not answer. She then instantly called her sons; who on entering the apartment found that life was quite extinct. Verdict-Died by the visitation of God. WONDERFUL PRODUCE! In two former im- pressions of the" 0 BSER V ER" the public were in- formed of a couple of enormous potatoes dug re- spectively by Mr. A. P. Davies, of the Gogerddan Arms Hotel, in this town, and Mr. Tolfree, of Llanbadarn-fawr. We find now, however, that there is in the possession of Mr. Henry Trenwith, Goginan, near this place, a potatoe weighing not less than 22 oz.. being heavier by 1 oz. than the largest of those alluded to above. We may here mention that the seed was purchased of our towns- man, Mr John Davies, who had imported a cargo of the same from Ireland. NEWTOWN AND MACHYNLLETH RAILWAY.—The adjourned half-yearly meeting of this Company, was held at Machynlleth, on Friday week last, R. D. Jones, Esq., in the chair. The report stated the Company had yet nearly two years for the purchase of land, and four years for the completion of the railway. The Chairman enlarged on the topics contained in the report, and moved its adoption which, being seconded by Dr. Evans, was un- animously agreed to. The Secretary mentioned that steps had been taken to obtain payment of arrear of calls, on which interest would be charged. PETTY SESSIONS—On Tuesday last, at the Town Hall, before F R. Roberts, Esq Mayor, and T. 0 Morgan,Esq. P.S. Thomas charged Louis Goitoire, a Frenchman, (who understood English,) with beign drunk and begging about the streets. Prisoner discharged on promising to leave the town.—P. C. Evans charged David James with being drunk and creating a disturbance in the public streets. The prisoner denying the charge, called the landlady of the Angel Inn to prove the contrary. Case dis- missed-Mary James, (better known as Mary Lletty'rgegin,) wife of the last defendant, was brought up, having been apprehended for using abusive language towards Ellen Williams, with a tendency to commit a breach of the peace. De- fendant made a long harangue, which caused much amusement in court. The Mayor ordered the prisoner to find surety to keep the pepce for three months. The prisoner's husband being accepted as such, she was discharged.—Mary Hughes was sum- moned by David Davies for throwing a bason full of hot water at him through a window. Ordered to find surety t6 keep the peace towards plaintiff. G' A DISTINGUISHED VISIToR.-On Wednesday last, Charles Kean, Esq., the celebrated tragedian, and manager of the Royal Princess's Theatre, London, accompanied by Mrs. Kean and family, arrived at the Rfdle-Vup Royal Hotel, from the Devil's Bridge. Mr. Kean is wisely spending his I- vacation" amid the bea/ties, and in the invigorating air of the Cambrian mountains; and most heartily do we wish him re- newed health, to enable him to bring to a trium- phant termination his next season—which the play- going world will regret to hear, is to be his last-as manager and lessee of the Princess's. Of Mr. Kean's great merits as an actor, and more particularly a Shaksperian actor, it is superfluous to speak, but as a manager, it is but riuht to say, that he has done more to elevate and refine the British drama and the British "tage than any other man ever connected with either; and for this he deserves, and indeed receives, the respect and gratitude of the nation. THE COMET.—The Comet at present visible, and which presents such a fine object (especially through a good telescope) amongst the Northern constella- tions was first discovered by Dr. Donati on the 2nd of June last—hence named The Donati Comet- had at first the appearance of a faint luminous circle even with the aid of powerful telescopes. The nucleus has gradually increased in brilliancy; and the coma, though single, presents a beautiful object. On the morning of the 1.3ih instant, I found its distance from the North Pole to be 60° 13' at 2h. 16m. the length of its tail 3° 4'. On Wednes- day 9h. 10m., its distance from the Pole was 64 degrees 23 minutes its coma 4o'oBO' thus proving its rapid approach. Its present position is near the star Regulus, rapidly moving in a. South-WTest direction, bearing at 9h. in the evening about N. N. W. Its distance from the earth is about 110,000000 of miles its diameter 3,000 miles. The legth of its coma 15,000,000 of miles,-From a Cor- respondent.
- CORRESPONDENCE.!
CORRESPONDENCE. To the Editor of the" Aberystwith Observer." MR. EDITOR.-SIR,-By your kind permission, I will make a few observations on a letter which appeared in the "OBSERVER" of last week, signed, EVAN ROWLANDS, Surgeon. As an inhabitant of Aberystwith, I beg to express my thanks to that gentleman for the lively interest he takes in the sanitary state of the town. If we should not be trespassing too much on the valuable time of Mr. Rowlands, he would be conferring a still greater iavouronthe town by visiting the Board of Com- missioners at their next meeting, which w ill take place on Tuesday week, that they may avail them- selves of his engineering capabilities. For if such a supply of water as he mentions can be obtained at the cost stated it would show a want of consistency in the Commissioners not to avail themselves at once of so desirable a project. I am, Sir, AN INHABITANT.
