♦— CARDIGANSHIRE MIDSUMMER…
♦— CARDIGANSHIRE MIDSUMMER QUARTER SESSIONS. The General Miasm, o„ariPr Sessions for this County was held at the County Sessfons *j0use, Aberayron, on Tuesday, the 'lHlh ultimo, before G. W. Parry, Esq., (Chairman), James Davies, Thomas Jones, G. B. J. Jordan, W. Chambers, J. P. Pryse, A. L. Gwynne, D. Llewellyn, J. Boultbee, C. R. Longcroft, T. D. Lloyd, T. 1). Saunders, D. Davies, and W. Jones, Esqrs., Capt. Lewis, Rev. Rhys Lloyd, and Rev. W. North. A true bill was found against Evan Williams for stealing a brass bore, the property of Mr. Thomas, Founder, Cardigan. The prosecutor having failed to identify the property, the jury, by the direction of the Chairman, returned a verdict of acquittal. Morris Gibby, Cattle dealer was indited for stealing the sum of jE31 lOs, from the person of John Jones, a Farmer. Mr. Lascells appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. Thirlwall defended the prisoner. This case lasted most part of the day. It appeared that the prosecutor and the prisoner slept in the same public house, at Newcastle Emlyn Prosecutor retired to rest with the money in his pocket, and on the following morning found it was gone. The prisoner, it seems, had absconded during the night with a horse that did not belong to him suspicion naturally fell upon him, and he was apprehended at his residence near Swansea. The money was not found upon him, but it was proved he had been displaying some Bank Notes at a public house, on which a cross mark was noticed, and which prosecutor said he had put.; and it was known that the prisoner had no money, from the fact that he wanted to borrow 5s. on the day the money was lost. The jury retired, and in a short time returned with a verdict of Guilty; and prisoner was sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour. COUNTY BUSINESS. Lord Cawdor, the Chairman, and Mr. Hughes, the Clerk to the visitors for providing a joint Lunatic Assylum for the counties of Carmarthen Cardigan, and Pembroke, produced the plans and specification of the proposed building for the in- spection and adoption by the Magistrates of this County. A lengthened discussion ensued as to the propriety of adopting the plans, it being urged that they were by far too expensive for this County, It was ultimately determined that the consideration of the subject be adjourned to August 3rd, to afford an opportunity of ascertaining the number of Luna- ti<s requiring confinement; and enquiring whether a less expensive building would not be more suitable to tha requirements of the County of Cardigan. Notice was given by the Chairman that at, the next Sessions application will be made for a sum not exceeding £ 500 towards repairing and irnprov- ing the Aberystwith Lock-up, and a sum not ex- ceeding Y,50 towards flagging and repairing Aber- ystwith Bridge. The question as to whither an additional Superintendent of Police was required was adjourned. A County Rate of f and a Police Rate of £ was ordered to be made.

PONTRHYDFENDIGAID.—The Calvinistic Metho- dists in this place having suffered much inconve- nience for a length of time from their present place of worship being too small to accommodate the con- gregation, a subscription was set on foot some 12 months past; and having been successful, a building Committee was appointed, who elected a. Rowlands, Esq., to apply to the Earl ofLisburne for a site upon which to build a new edifice. His Lordship promptly acceded to their request, and directed that they should have the most suitable place they could select for the purpose, upon very moderate terms. Notice was given that the Committee was ready to receive tenders for the building of a chapel of the following dimensions-20 yards long by 14 yards wide inside, and 24 yards high, with an hipped roof, to contain 80 pews. At a late meeting of the Committee held at the present chapel, the tender of Mr. Roderick Jones, master mason, of that village, was accepted, to be completed for £ 94; & Mr. Joseph Hopkins is to complete the joiner's work for £ 126. 1 Tin Committee to supply all the materials for both tracts. CORRESPONDENCE.
CORRESPONDENCE. To the Editor of the A berystwith Observer. SJR.-I beg to call the attention of the public, with your permission, to the WORKING MEN'S READING ROOM at Jasper House, Church Street, in this town, lately opened by the generosity of a lady. The room is large, well ventilated, & lit, and in every way suitable and convenient. I observed the Carmarthen and North Wales Newspapers; Eddowes's Journal; Y Cymro; Baner y Cymry; Yr Herald Cvmraeg; Yr Amserau The Express Daily Paper; The Illustrated London News; and last, thoagh not least, The Aberystwith Observer; besides a number of books, probably not less than 80 volumes. Before this room was opened a com- plaint had become general among the working classes that they were in effect excluded from the benefit to be derived from the Mechanics' Institute by the charges there being too high for their means and that Institution is kept possession of by a class totally different from the mechanic or working class, for whose benefit it was professedly intended- a sort of higher or second-class persons. Surely it is no exercise of 1 enevolence or charity to provide books and papers for those who can afford to pay for thein and many of the books presented to that inst ution were intended it is presumed for the use o Je who had not the means of purchasing them < ij Mnselves. But the poor are now debarred ffl i ip use and perusal of those books by the ch. 1 at the Mechanics' Institution being o.) too high a scale. Twelve shillings a year is too much for a working m;.in to pay even for the means of self-culture, as it is as much as many of us earn in a week to support ourselves and families. But a half-penny a week—sixpence a quarter, or two shillings a year—is not too much even for the work- ing man. I say this because I observed many attended at the opening of the room in question, and seemed eager to avail themselves of the oppor- tunity thus afforded them of becoming acquainted with the leading topics of the day, who have turned away as soon as they found anything was to pay, and have totallv discontinued their visits. My ob- ject now is chiefly to cause this Reading Room to be better known and appreciated through the town. A WORKING MAN.
