Gwespyr. Midnight Songsters. The night which saw the old year out and the new year in was fine but breezy, and the moon shone on many small parties of amateur Musicians, who visited the various residences and farmhouses for miles around. Besides several choirs, whose music was decidedly "ariedill quality, many of the caroilers gave instumental selections,a modern novelty being a medium-sized gramophone, which, wielded close to the key-hole, gave forth strains both grave and'gay. "When sunrise ushered in the first day of 1907, the music of a brass band was still to be heard patrolling the hills. Needless to say, New Year's Day was observed as a holiday.

The New Magistrate. Much satisfaction is expressed locally on the appointment of Mr John Williams (Ros- lyn) as a permanent magistrate, for which office he qualified at the Quarter Sessions in Mold on Tuesday. Mr Williams has been a resident in Dyserth for nine years, and always takes an active interest in the welfare of the district. His courtesy and geniality have won him many friends, who have not been backward in con- gratulating him on his selection as a Justice. A man of keen business ability and con- siderable experience, he can be relied upon to administer the law with discretion.

Postal Arrangements. It is gratifying to note that the postal 0 authorities are recognising the necessity of revising the arrangements in this neighbour- 0 hood. Hitherto one could only have his letters of an evening by going to the post office for them. But this has been remedied now, an evening delivery having come into vogue this week. Another concession granted is the timing of the evening dispatch forty minutes later 7-40 instead of 7 p.m. Whilst fully appreciating these boons, the residents consider that it would be a great convenience were a sub-office opened in the upper part of Dyserth. The idea has been previously advocated in these columns, and it would be well not to let the authorities lose sight of this need. Perhaps the Council, in n conjunction with our new J.P., will move in the matter.

The Day School was re-opened on Monday after the Christmas holidays, and the attendance since has been the best for the past six months.

Illness of the Vicar. Much to the sorrow of the parishioners, the Vicar has been confined to his bed since Fri- day. On all hands the wish is expressed that his recovery will rapid and complete.

Social Evening. On Thursday night a social was held at the schools in connection with the tech- nical classes. The local committee de- frayed the expenses, and about 80 invita- tions were sent out. The event will be reported next week.

Death of an Old Resident. On Saturday morning, after a short illness, John Jones, Post Office Terrace, died at the ripe age of 77 years. Deceased was interred in Meliden Churchyard on Tuesday, the funeral being largely attended. Rev. J. Parry Brooks (Prestatyn) conducted the service at the house, and the Rev. Peter Jones (Rhyl) at the church and graveside. Before leaving the house 0 fryniau Caer- salem" was sung, and in church the service concluded with the hymn Yn y dyfroedd mawr a'r tonnau."

Farewell Sermon. Next Sunday the Rev Humphrey Lloyd is to preach his farewell sermon, after having been conducting the services here for some months. A permanently appointed curate is expected in the parish.

Competitive Meeting. On New Year's Eve an interesting com- petitive meeting, promoted by the friends at C.M. Chapel, was held, and the goodly number present spent a pleasant evening. Owing to indisposition Mr John Williams, J.P. (Rosslyn), was unable to attend, but the Rev R. P. Hughes filled the gap admirably. The winners of the various events were as follows Best-made button holes, ''Anfedrus" (who did not respond to her name) singing for girls under 15, Sally Williams (Wesley Place) singing for boys under 15, prize divided between J. and P. Pierce; spelling in Welsh (for those under 21), Peter Hughes, Bryniau, answering impromptu questions, T. J. Hughes; reading unpunctuated sentence, Lewis Hughes, Bryniau. For the quartette only one party put in an appearance. There was therefore no competition, but the party (led by Mr P. Price) gave an excellent rendition. Items were also contributed to the pro- gramme by M. Ellis (Gwaenysgor), Lewis Hughes, P. R. Hughes, and L. Williams. The adjudicators were the Chairman, Mr John Roberts (Gwaenysgor), and Mr Joseph Davies (Prestatyn). The usual votes of thanks were passed, and the meeting con- cluded with the singing of a hymn. The secretarial duties were efficiently carried out by Mr John Pierce.

Gronant. Water in the Wrong Place. One often wonders, in passing the only day- school of which Gronant can boast, why that black pool of stagnant, muddy water is allowed to remain in such close proximity to the entrance. Besides the unhealthiness of its position, there is a certain amount of dan- ger to children in the vicinity. A few loads from the neighbouring refuse heaps would soon rectify matters.

The Brass Band. The members of the Excelsior Brass Band are to be commended for their plucky attempt to take the prize at Colwyn Bay on Tuesday. Be it remembered that they were competing with two of the first bands in Wales, viz., "Royal Oakley" and "Nantlle," therefore, though not successful in winning the prize there is no reason why they should not do so in the future even when the bands men- tioned are competing against them, if their ambition is attended with a corresponding amount of perseverance.

The Old and the New. A watchnight service was held at Bethania" on Monday night to solemnize the last moments of the old year, and to greet the incoming of the new year. It took the form of a prayer meeting and was well attended. At midnight the hooters of Mostyn Iron works. Trelogan Mine, and Point-of-Ayr Colliery, also the sirens of steamers on the water, loudly saluted the year 1907, whilst carols where sung here and there by small parties, all doing their utmost to signalize a year of good fortune to all. b

An Old Inhabitant. No doubt the news will be received with pleasure by a large number of friends that Mr J. Jones, Holyhead, permanent way inspector on the L. and N.W. Railway, has been pro- moted to the Rhyl section of the Company's line. His new district will embrace the line through here to Holywell, so that there will be ample opportunity of a visit to Ffynnon- groew very often. Mr Jones and his family intend to make their abode in Rhyl. Lecture at Peniel. Mr W. O. Jones delivers a lecture at Peniel on Saturday night. Subject, "The Revival."

NORTH WALES TEMPERANCE WORK. -A meeting of the Executive Committee of the North Wales Temperance Association was held on Monday at Engedi, Colwyn Bay, Mr H. J. Williams (Plenydd) presiding. Mr J. Herbert Roberts, M.P., and Mr H. E. Jones (Howel Cefni) were elected president and vice- president respectively for the ensuing year. A letter from the Llangollen Eisteddfod Committee was read thanking the Association and the United Kingdom Alliance for the offer of a prize of JE10 for a temperance composi- tion, and it was decided that the subject should be "A Welsh handbook dealing with the most modern aspects of the question, with a history of the rise and progress of the cause in Wales."

Mostyn. Dinner to the Poor. The annual dinner given to the poor, aged, and infirm people of Mostyn, under the aus- pices of the people of Christ Church, took place in the National Schools on Wednesday. The tables were sumptuously laid out, and dinner was served from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., provided for by voluntary subscription. Al- together about 150 sat down. The following visited the schools: Lady Mostyn, Hon. Gwyneth Mostyn, Mrs Trevor Eyton, Mrs Prys Eyton. The ladies in attendance at the tables were: Mrs Roberts (Glan-y-don House), Mrs Barratt (Bronheulog), Mr Nuttall (Ingle- dene), Mrs Bithell, Misses Bassett, Morris, Williams, and Mrs Hammond. After dinner a capital entertainment was provided, presided over by the Vicar, when the following artistes took part Mr F. Nicholson (Gwespyr), Masters J. E. and C. Roberts (Holywell), Misses M. Jones and S. Roberts (Mostyn), Mr Edwards (Rhewl), Mr J. T. Roberts (Mostyn), Christ Church Glee Party (conductor Mr W. Nuttall, L.L.C.M.), with Miss Morris and Mr Nuttall as accom- panists. A very jolly time was spent. At the close a vote of thanks was proposed by the Vicar, and seconded by Mr Barratt, to all patronisers and workers in the Society, which was carried unanimously. Afterwards a vote of thanks to the Vicar and the artistes was proposed by Mr Barratt, and seconded by Mr Eyton. God save the King was then sung, after which a cup of tea and a mince- pie was served to everyone present, this concluded the charitable event. --+-

Deaths at Rhyl. The funeral of Mr Francis Geary, auctioneer, Rhyl, who died suddenly last week at the age of 59, was largely attended on Saturday. Another death which took place on Tues- day is that of Mr Joseph Jones (Waterloo Villas, Rhyl), a retired commercial traveller well-known throughout North Wales. Mr Jones was elected on the Rhyl Council only last April. Both the above were prominent oilicials of St. John's Church, Rhyl.

FOOTBALL NOTES. Meliden v. Rhyl Amateurs. The above match was played at Meliden last Saturday. The Rhyl captain won the toss and Meliden kicked off against the wind. Almost immediately from the start Amos scored for Rhyl. After this reverse Meliden settled down to a hard game. After much midfield play the Meliden forwards broke away, and J. Hughes scored. A little later the same player sent the ball towards the Lihyl goal, when one of the backs handled and Meliden were awarded a penalty. R. Jones took the kick and scored with a good shot. The Rhyl team were having the best of it when half-time was called with Meliden leading by 2 goals to 1. Restarting, the Rhyl forwards broke away and scored an equaliser. The game now was of a ding dong character, each side pressing alternately, and when time was called Meliden were attacking. Final score Meliden 2, H.hyI Amateurs 2. J. Hughes at left-half and D. Hughes in goal played a fine game, while D. J. Parry was a good centre half, doing his work well. Amos and the right-back were the pick of the Rhyl team. Meliden were awarded three penalties, from only one of which a goal accrued.

Reversed. Last week it was recorded that John Ellis was awarded the first prize and Llewelyn Jones second for answering six scriptural questions at the competitive meeting. We are now informed it was the other way about, Llewelyn got first and John second.
