Xmas Pudding. 2 lbs. Raisins 1 Currants Peel (mixed) 1 Bread crumbs 1 Beef suet 8 eggs and sufficient brandy to moisten Boil six hours when made and two hours again when wanted for use.

Xmas Cake. f lb. Best butter f Whitesugar i Sultanas t Mixed peel 1 Flour 2 ozs. Ground almonds 2 Chopped almonds Eight eggs and a little flavouring. Bake slowly.in a moderate oven. If this cake is made at once and kept in a tin until Xmas it will then be in excellent con- dition for almond paste and iceing.

Drmk^ Water. Nowa,days people do not drink enough water to thin the blood so that the system can be cleared of its enete-matter quickly and promptly. The consequence is that this long- continued retention produces rheumatism, and catarrh, and affects the heart. The use of water in its normal quantity keeps the stomach and bowels clean, and really has the effect of'an^inside bath.

Hot Water for Insomnia. Insomnia is often caused by worry upsetting thestomach, for indigestion will, inflate the < blóôd-vessêls of the brain. Recognising this, doctors are now prescribing hot water intern ally"! and externally. Before going to bed the person so afflicted should put the feet into hot Water. The object of this is to draw blood from the head, for when the blood- vessels are inflated.-they..press against the skull, the result being fears, apprehensions, and wakefulness.

To Rest the Body. Don't be afraid to, open the month, wide ,and yawn and stretch whenever you feel like it. Indeed, if you are very tired but do not feel like yawning, there is nothing that will rest you so quickly as to sit on a straight- back chair and lifting the feet from the floor push them out in front of you as far as possible, stretch the arms, push the head back,- open the mouth wide, and make yourself yawn. Those tense nerves will relax, the contracted muscles will stretch, and the whole body will be rested. Do this two or three times when you are tired, and see what it will do for you.

KuSKIN AND CARLYLE. In a characteristic passage, estimating the influence of Carlyle upon liuskin's social philosophy, and shewing how the disciple popularised the master's teaching, the late Sr Leslie Stephen, in his "Studies of a Biographer," thus contrasts the methods of the two great teachers Ruskin struck some sharp blows. Carlyle's huge growls had passed over men's heads like distant thunder, too vague to be effective. Ruskin meant to be the lightning, striking distinct and tangible points. He had, as he had shewn in his other works, a singular power of putting nasty questions, of hitting weak points, exposing loose and wordy phiases, and generally making himself disagreeable to self-complacent phrasemongers. He succeeded in irritating, if not in convincing. Yet, considered as a prophet, it s("'ms to me that Carlyle had a far more potent influence upon the more thoughtnd young men of the time than Ruskin ever possessed. He might be grotesque and extravagant, but his influence embodied a more vigorous and coherent philosophy. He had the uncompromising thoroughness of the Puritan, and in this respect was a quaint contrast to his disciple. Carlyle, as a descendant of John Knox, approved of the famous sentiment, "May the devil fl. away with the fine arts Ru-kin, who drew his eirly religious impressions from an enfeebled version of Puritanism, was alienated from it pre- cisely T)y !s it onoclastic tendency.

Landudno (h) 5 Abergele 1 Colwyn Bay v. Prestatyn. Prestatyn journeyed to Colwyn Bay on Saturday to meet the Bay in a friendly match. The start was delayed owing to the non-appearance of the ball, and it was some twenty minutes after the advertised time when the teams, under the control of Mr Meirs of Colwyn Bay, lined up. Prestatyn was represented by: Goal W. Glass, backs J. W. Jones, J. W. Ellis, halves E. Mostyn, K. Hughes. and J. Griffiths, forwards 11. Hughes, 1). W. Jones, D. Hughes G. Glass, W. A. Stone. It was noticed that Prestatyn were without J. T. Williams and T. W. Ellis. E. Mostyn won the toss and the Bayites kicked off against a strong cross- wind. The game was very scrapy and unin- teresting, the ball always keeping to one side of the field. Colwyn Bay had the best of the exchanges, but shot very poorly. Towards the interval the wind dropped, and soiue lively attacks were made at both ends, from one of which Glass scored from a grand middle by U. Hughes, bat for some reason Mr Meirs disallowed the point. Interval: no score. Thè second half opened in favour of the visitors. Stone being responsible for some grand shuts. The Bay now attacked, but føuftd Glass at tne top of his form. fc, Hughes made a grand run. and ended by forcing a corner, from which D. W. Jones headed the ball into the net, thus scoring first goal for Prestatyn. The game now became interesting and: exciting, the Bay attacking with vigour.. From how to the finish the game was hotly n contested, but without any addition boing 0 made to the score Prestatyn. thas gaining a well deserved victory by one goal to nil. The Prestatyn players were in great foriv, but none played a better game than did Glass in goal. some of his saves being really fine. Jack Jones and J..Wynne Ellis, at back defended well, whilst. 11. Hughes, Mostyn, and Griffiths, got through a lot of work with great credit. The forwards were grand in the second half, and D. Hughes gave a good display. R. Hughes and Stone were very fast" and. centred well. Glass and D. W. Jones were ever ready to shoot, and to beat Colwyn Bay on their own ground with a full senior league team is something to be proud of.

SCRAPS. Prestatyn are without a match next Satur- day. Prestatyn have received a bye in the second round of the Junior cup. Jack Wynne Ellis made a welcome re- appearance in the Prestatyn ranks on Satur- day. Stone and Glass does not sound like a very safe wing, but they are. Rhyl Victoria Football Club has been admitted to the Junior League. Z5 A spectator at Colwyn Bay remarked that he had played against W. Glass twenty years ago, and on Saturday's form considered he had improved since then. Mr Meirs fairly lost his head in refereeing the match at Colwyn Bay. He always whistled when the crowd shuuted. Prestatyn has had a bye in the first round of the Welsh Amateur Cup. Abergele came a terrible cropper at Llan- dudno. It will be "Derby Day" at Abergele when the blues visit that town. The Concert Committee of the F.C. have something extra up their sleeves for the first concert. The medals for the competition will be on view shortly at Messrs O. H. Hughes and H. Freeman's. One medal has already been promised. Will anyone elso offer one ? The competition will be a good advert, for Prestatyn. It is expected that teams from Liverpool, Bolton, and Manchester will compete. Tom Wynne Ellis is recovering slowly and will be fit for play in a week or so. The blues are becoming a popular teal. What a good gate they drewaVCólwyn in a friendly.
