ASSAULT ON THE POLICE AT BARRY DOCK. EXEMPLARY PUNISHMENT FOR A "LIVERPOOL CORNER-BOY." Scenes of daring ruffianism by sailors and others upon the police in the Barry district are becoming both numerous and alarming, and it is, therefore, full time that the magistrates should deal severely with the cases' which come before them. On Friday night last Police-constable William Williams was set upon by a man named Henry Wilkinson, a Liverpool corner-boy, ef ruffianly appearance, off the notorious Gueret-street, Barry Dock, and was assaulted in a cowardly and out- rageous manner. The ruffian was so violent that it was with difficulty that a number of stalwart helpers enabled the constable to lodge him in the police-station.—At Penarth Police Court on Monday—before Mr J. S. Bachelor and Mr J. Pyke Thompson—Wilkinson was charged with being drunk and assaulting the police in Thompson-street on the night of the 3rd inst., and committing a nuisance in the middle of the street. Witness requested him to move on, when prisoner commenced to curse loudly. He kicked witness several times in the stomach and other parts. With the assistance of a dock constable and others, defendant was taken into custody.—Dock-constable Guy Franks said he helped to take prisoner to the station. He was very disorderly and acted like a madman. Witness was also kicked on the body.- The Bench said the case was a very bad one, and one of the worst they had had before them for some time, and prisoner would have to go to prison for two months with hard labour.

BARRY DISTRICT TRADES' AND LABOUR COUNCIL. GRADUATED INCOME TAX AND DEATH DUTIES. THE CONDUCT OF MR. A. J. WILLIAMS, M.P., CRITICISED. The fortnightly meeting of the members of the Barry District Trades' and Labour Council was held on Friday evening last at the Victoria Hotel, Barry Dock, when there were present:—Messrs F. Walls (vice-president), Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, presiding J. Robins, General Union of Carpenters and Joiners; J. Murray, Smiths' Hammermen's Society H. S. Rendel and W. W. Fookes, Operative Stone Masons' Society; M. Jones and C. Tilley (provisional), Boilermakers' and Iron and Steel Ship Builders' Society: W. Copp. National Union of Operative Plasterers W. Harper, National Amalgamated Labourers' Union M. Nicholas (provisional) and A. Williams (provisional), Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants T. Griffiths, Carriage and Wagon Builders' Society; T. Pitt, Bristol and West of England Trade and Provident Society W. P. Clark (secretary) and Ivor LI. Thomas, Typographical Association; and J. Rees, labour representative on the School and Burial Boards. PROVISIONAL DELEGATE. Mr A. Williams was admitted provisional delegate from the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. LABOUR BEPBESENTATIVE'S REPORT. Mr J. Rees said he had not much to report with reference to the School Board, as no meeting of that body had been held since the last meeting of the Council. There had been two special meetings of the Burial Board, the one being called for the consideration of some little alterations at the cemetery. The other meeting was convened for the passing of cheques in payment of costs incurred in connection with the purchase of additional land adjoining the cemetery from the Wenvoe Castle Estate, such as conveyance, sur- veyor's fees, &c., which came to P,63, the land cost- ing £ 667 total, £ 730. REPRESENTATION ON THE NUBSIIFG ASSOCIATION COMMITTEE. A letter was read by the secretary (Mr W. P. Clark) from Major-General Lee, The Mount, Dinas Powis, acknowledging the Council's letter of the 27th ultimo with reference to the selection of two representatives from the Council to sit on the general committee of the Barry District Nursing Association. General Lee said he was pleased to receive the names, and notices would be sent to the representatives of meetings of the committee. —Mr Bothfield having resigned membership of the Nursing Association and Cottage Hospital Com- mittee of the Council, Mr Morris Jones was unanimously elected to fill the vacancy. THE COUNCIL AND THE PROPOSED GRADUATED I INCOME TAX AND DEATH DUTIES. Mr J. Robins referred to the memorial recently presented to Sir William Harcourt by Liberal members of Parliament in support of graduated income tax and death duties, .s.:c., and he (Mr Robins) proposed that the council ask Mr Arthur J. Williams, the member for South Glamorgan, to do all in his power to further the matter, as it may tend to decrease the taxes of the working classes, and would certainly prove a valuable source of revenue to the Exchequer.—Mr Rees said it was quite new to him to hear of the matter being taken up by a trades' council. It was a political matter, and one in which the Chancellor of the Exchequer should take a lively interest. It would mean a substantial reform in taxation with reference to large and small estates, but he thought there would be a difficulty in getting the matter through, like every other measure calculated to relieve the working classes er improye their conditions, the majority of the peers in the House of Lords belonging to the moneyed classes. The matter sounded nice on paper, and it seemed very reasonable that everyone should pay his fair pro- portion of taxes towards the revenue of the country, but what they knew of the House of Lords was sufficient to convince them that the reform would probably never become law. If it were pointed out to what extent the working community would benefit by this movement he (Mr Rees) would certainly support it; but, so far, that was not known, and, therefore, they should not do m(,re than write to Mr Williams on the matter. -The Chairman thought it was best to let the matter drop. He had great objections to playing into the hands of Mr A. J. Williams, because he had not done his duty to the council in movements they had asked him to take an interest in.—Mr M. Jones concurred with the chairman, and said the council should not dabble in politics, and he moved, as an amendment, that the matter be allowed to drop, and that the Council take no interest in politics.—Mr Harper seconded, but the amendment was not required, there being no seconder to the original motion, which, therefore, fell through.

TRAGIC AFFAIR AT CIDO-X-TON- BARRY. AN OLD INHABITANT DELIBERATELY COMMITS SUICIDE. A painfully sad affair occurred at Cadoxton- Barry on Thursday evening last, an old and respected inhabitant, Mrs Catherine Thomas, of 6, Brock-street, being found dead in a tragic manner. It appears that Mrs Thomas, who was fi5 vears of age, had been left alone in the house dunug tb evening, but about six o'clock a woman name Prothero, with whom deceased was living, enter the house, and not finding Mrs Thomas uc& stairs, she went upstairs, f.nd found Mrs Thomas hanging by a clothes line to the bannisters. Acting-sergeant Ben Davies was at once called, but the body was already quite cold on the arrival of the officer named. He cut down the body, and Dr Treharne was sent for, but life was extinct. It is believed the old lady had grown melancholy, but it was never suspected she intended committing so rash an act, as there was no necessity preying upen her mind. Mrs Thomas was the mother of Mr Llewellyn Thomas, schoolmaster, Bed was, near Caerphilly. The deceased lady (Mrs Thomas) has a son at the Cardiff Infirmary being treated for a broken arm, and this, it is surmised by some, preyed upon her mind. THE INQUEST. On Friday afternoon, at the Police Station, Cadoxton, an inquiry was held by Mr E. B. Reece, the district] corner, and a jury of which Mr J. McGill was the foreman, into the circumstances attending the death of Catherine Thomas, who resided at No. 6, Brock-street, Cadoxton. and who committed suicide the previous evening. Mr Llewellyn Thomas, schoolmaster, Bedwas. said he had identified the body as that of his mother, Catherine Thomas, who was 65 years of age. Deceased had been living with him for a week recently. She seemed slightly depressed in spirits at times. but nothing unusual. She hud been troubled about his brother under treatment in the Cardiff Infirmarv.-Ann Protheroe said deceased had been living with her. Deceased had been rather low spirited. On Thursday evening, about six o'clock, she found deceased hanging by the neck to the bannister of the stairs. Deceased had never threatened to do such a thing. eting- sergeant Ben Davies deposed to cutting down the body. Deceased was quite de;id.—Dr T-eharne said he was called to the house on the evening in question. He had been attending deceived tor five weeks, as "In had been suffering from low spirits and sleeplessness. In his opinion she had committed suicide while in a state of temporary insanity.—A verdict in accordonoe with the medical evidence was returned.
