i LC^ALTNOTMT
LC^ALTNOTMT THE LATE MR. DAVID DA VIES. In our last issue we were able to announce (and were the first to give the public the in- formation) that £ 1,000 had been given for educational purposes in the Barry district by the relatives of the lato Mr. David Davies. Already at Barry Dock there is a lasting me- mento to the work of that gentleman in the shape of a, bronxe statue by Mr. Gilbert, R.A. We are pleased to inform our readers that on Thursday afternoon, at about the time the Star was published, a replica of the statue at Barry Dock was unveiled in the native village of Mr. David Davies (Llandinam, Montgomery- shire), in the presence of a large and repre- sentative gathering. In the Barry District we feel sure the memory of Mr. David Davies will always be cherished. He had carried out a good and noble work. KEEP YOUR WINDOWS FASTENED. Complaints have reached us of the doings of a number of boys in this district, and we advise our readers to be certain that all their windows are regularly and securely fastened, Various portion of the district have been visited by them, and in one instance they cleared out all the food they could find. At about 10.45 on Thursday night four boys made an attempt to enter a house in Rectory-road, but they were disturbed. They were seen to. jump over the wall at the back of the house, and when one was caught by a neighbour he confessed that one of his companions was on another's shoulder endeavouring to enter the house. Information was give to the police, but it is said the youth- ful burglars have not been home of late. On Monday another attempt was made by two boys to open the front room window of a house in Charlotte-street during the afternoon. They were, however; unsuccesful, and ran away when disturbed. We hope that every endeavour will be made to secure these offenders, and that every householder will see that his premises are properly secured. I'JRJENDLY SOCIETIES. We are pleased to find that Barry has made such good progress in the matter of Friendly Societies. The gathering of Druids on Wednes- day was one of the largest we have had the pleasure of attending, and was well conducted. The great enthusiasm shown speaks well for the future welfare of this Ancient Order, and the officers should be proud that .they have control of a body of men who have done so much to help themselves. Too much cannot be said of Benefit Societies, and as was remarkedi at the gathering the members take upon themselves. the necessity of providing for a rainy day. Major-General Lee also advocated the forma.- tiou of women Jodges, and we think the time is not far distant when that will be an accom-, plished fact. THE WATEY SUPPLY. We are pleased to be in the position to assure the inhabitants of the district that there is not the least cause for fear that our local water supply will fail. In spite of the pro- longed drought the water in the well belong- ing to the Barry and Cadoxton Gas and Water Company has not yet shown signs of diminish- ing, and the officials have not found it necessary to curtail the output. This fact speaks well for the future of the district, as it is evident to all that it is absolutely necessary for a town that has grown with the rapidity of Barry that there -should be a first class abundant supply of water. We have had ample opportunity of testing the present source of water during the past dry weather, and it has not been found wanting. The copious supply at hand on the outbreak of a fire on Saturday last also gave additional evidence of this fact. In conclusion we would, however, impress upon all the fact that because there is a good supply the water should not be wasted. At the present time, it is said that there is a scarcity of water in Sully Village.

EPPS'S AND COMFORTING —" By a thorough knowledge of the natural laws which govern the operations of digestion and nutrition, and by a careful application of the fine properties of well-selected COCOA, Mr. Epps has provided our breakfast tables with a delicately flavoured beverage which may save us many heavy doctors' bills. It is by the judicious use of such articles of diet that a consti- tution may be gra.dually built up until strong enough to resist every tendency to disease. Hundreds of subtle maladies are float ng around us ready to attack wherever there is i weztk point. We may escape many a fatal shaft by keeping ourselves well fortified with pure blood and a properly nourished frame. Civil Service Gazette. — Made simply with boiling water or milk. CHOLERA PRECAUTION AT BARRY.
CHOLERA PRECAUTION AT BARRY. THE exceedingly dry and warm weather which has prevailed during the past few weeks haa placed our sanitary officials upon the alert for the outbreak of disease. We can assure our readers, however, that there is no necessity for alarm at the probable introduction of cholera into this port. The Local Board, acting as the Port Sanitary Authority, has taken every pre- caution against its probable introduction, and the inspector and medical officer are continually at the dock upon toura of inspection. All such precautions must necessarily mean great expense to a locality, and we are pleased to find that steps have been taken to get the country at large to bear the cost of protecting the cost. In fact a deputation has waited upon the President of the Local Government Board to urge upon it the desirability of making an arrangement by which the Treasury would contribute a substantial amount towards the cost of the precaution undertaken at the in- stance of the Local Government Board against an outbrek of cholera. The re- ply of the President of the Local Govern- ment Board will be read with interest by the ratepayers of Barry, who, in the past, have had to contribute to the cost of protecting their port against the inroads of the disease. Mr. Fowler said it was obvious that additional. expenses would be incurred in e rery port, but his department did not believe in quarantine. The Chancellor of the Exchequer had already made arrangements that there should be no additional expense cast upon local authorities in respect of visitation by medical officers of all ships entering a port. Such a statement is of the greatest importance to Barry, and the expense of the precautions taken by Barry will, no doubt, be partly borne by the Government. But we learn that nothing definite has been decided upon with regard to providing, or bearing the expense, of hospital isolation, and, as is well known, the Barry Local Board intend taking steps for the erection of a suitable hos- pital. We hope that everything possible will be done to shift the burden of protecting ports from the shoulders of the local authorities on to the broader back of the Imperial Exchequer. Barry will certainly benefit by such an arrange- ment. THE POLICE INQUIRV AT BARRY DOCK POLICE COURT. The inquiry held on Saturday last at the Police Court, Barry Dock, before Alderman J. C. Meggitt (as member of the Joint Police Committee) and Chief Constable Lindsay, into the circumstances attending the allegations that the Barry district was. infested with she- beening and immorality, proved on the whole more or less, we understand, of an abortive character, and for all practical purposes things will remain pretty much in statu quo. The inquiry was privately conducted, but we learn that although complaints of a general character were forthcoming from the several organisa- tions represented by the witnesses, namely, the Barry District Temperance Council, the local branch of the National Vigilance Association, and the Ministers' Fraternal Union, the evidence was utterly wanting in proof or charges of a more definite character which have been talked so much about during the past few weeks. To such an extent is this true that, notwithstanding the fact that whispers of grave reflections upon the character and integrity of the local polics have been freely circulated by members of the Temperance Council for some time, and although Inspector Rees was in attendance to answer any accusa- tions which might be forthcoming, not a word in this direction was said by any member of the deputations, and the inspector was not as much as called forward. The temperance cause has no stronger supporter in the district than the Star, but we must be candid, and say we con- sider the interests of temperance cannot by any means be promoted by issuing forth im- moderate assertions that the Barry district is infested with evils which, as a matter of fact, ate limited to a few streets in one portion] of the locality, and charges are raked up against public officials which, when brought to a test, find no tissue of justification. In these circum- stances, we are inclined to fear the wild cry of shebeening and immorality which has just been raised in the Barry district is still wanting in corroboration, and we fear the cause of tem- perance, by the intemperate action of its representatives, has thus taken a retrograde, rather than a progressive, step.
AN AMUSING RACE AT BARRY DOCK.
AN AMUSING RACE AT BARRY DOCK. A foot race of an umtfu.il and decidedly novel character took place at B trry Dock on Monday last, when a man, nam-d Michael Courtenay, living in Gueret-street. Birry Dock (and who posseses a cork leg) with another man, named Grist, ran a distance of 153 yards, the prize being- a. 9-gallon cask of beer. The cripple, who received 100 yards start, proved an easy winner, the" old cork leg" covering the distance with proverbial agility. The event created considerable excite- ment in the neighbourhood.
