GOOD NEWS FOR BARRY - GREAT…
GOOD NEWS FOR BARRY GREAT INCREASE OF TRADE AT THE DOCK. WE feel sure that our readers will welcome the news which we are able to give them this week. On every hand there are signs of approaching prosperity for Barry, and we believe that the silver lining of the dark cloud which has hung over in the past is fast showing itself. Trade is getting more brisk every week at the docks, and we record with pleasure the large increase in the number of ships which are in the lianda of the shipbuilder at Barry Dock. It is said that at thepresent time there is plenty of work for all the men in the port, and that unlike previous years the men have plenty of work during the summer months. The import trade has showed a most wonder- ful increase during the past six months. We are pleased to say that the total imports at Barry Dock for the present year to June 10 was 08,485 tons 12 cwt., as against 35,914 tons 10 cwt. last year, showing the grand increase of 32,571 tons 2 cwt. Taking the past week we find that there has been no less than 5,156 tons of pitwood imported, as against nil for the corresponding week of last year, and the im- ports for the week show an increase of 5,124 tons 10 cwt. This is certainly good news for the Barry. district, and not only has the import trade shown that it has a great future before it, Qut the export trade also has more than realised the most sanguine expectations. We find that z;1 81,024 tons 14 cwt. of coal and coke were ex- ported during the past week, showing an increase of 3,313 tons on that of the corres- ponding week of last year. Barry is to be con- gratulated upon this fact, but even more so when it is found that the total exports for the period to June 10th was 2,005,513 tons 8 cwt., as against 1,910,006 tons 19 cwt. to the same date last year, showing that the export trade has exceeded the previous figures for a like period by 88,906 tons 9 cwt. The above figures speak for themselves, and are certainly very welcome news to the inhabit- ants of the district. The Barry Bill is also making very satisfactory progress, and it now only remains to pass one more stage when it will become law. We are in a positi6n to assure our reader that every preparation has been made by the Railway Company to immediately proceed with the work when the Bill becomes law. The plans and all details are in readiness for the new dock and the Yale of Glamorgan Railway. The extension of the line to Pontypridd will be commenced very soon, and with everything looking so bright and prosperous we feel that the Barry people can- not |but congratulate themselves upon the prosperous future before them.
LOCAL NOTES.
LOCAL NOTES. DINAS POWIS IVORITES AND THE LOCIAL PJiESS. The members of the Dinas Powis Lodge of Ivorites take a very old-fashioned view of nineteenth century progress so far especially as friendly societies are concerned, for at their anniversary on Monday last they declined to allow representatives of the local Press to* attend for the purpose of reporting the pro- ceedings. It is manifest that neither the Press nor the public of the district have lost any- thing by the direct veto thus place upon the fidelity of the reporters by this band of so- called members of a friendly society, but it shows the degree of the miserable inaptitude to which these individuals have allowed them- selves to sink in their proposed encouragement of the interests of a lodge the great secret of the success of which essentially is publicity. It is satisfactory, however, that treatment suchasthat received by local representatives of the Press last Monday is an exception and not the rule, so far as lodges in the district are concerned, and it is to be hoped that ere another year has elapsed the members of the Ivorites Lodge at Dinas Powis, too, will learn to appreciate at their proper value the good offices which the Fourth Estate may be instrumental in con- ferring upon them. INTERESTING- TO THE RATEPAYERS. The Barry and Cadoxton Local Board Gas and Water Bill has passed the Third Reading of the House of Commons. We have from the very first expressed our firm belief that not only should the gas and water undertakings of a dis- trict situated like Barry is should be in the hands of the municipal authorities, but that they can be worked at a profit to the ratepayers. Several instances have been given where the taking over of the gas and water by the municipality has been a success, but we think the following will be read with the greatest interest by the inhabitants of the district controlled by the Barry and Cadoxton Local Board Upon the recom- mendation of the Gas Works Committee, the Lincoln City Council decided to reduce the price of gas from 2s. 6d. to 2s. 4d. per 1,000 cubic feet. The corporation purchased the gas undertaking eight years ago for f 191,000, since which time they have created a sinking fund out of the profits of £ 15,000, and have increased the cash balance from £ 9,000 to £17,000, in addition to which they have bene- > v 7 fited the consumers-first, by reducing the meter rents from Is. to Gd. per quarter, which was equal to £ 1,950 a year; and then by re- ducing the price of gas, first from 2s. 8d. to 2s. Gd., and now to 2s. 4d. per 1,000 feet. So that, while the ratepayers have so far benefited by the purchase to the amount of £ 23,000, the gas consumers have also benefitted £3,350 a, year." I A STANDING NUISANCE AT BARRY DOCK. A few weeks ago complaints were published in our correspondence columns of the extreme inconvenience of the narrow stile leading from Dock-road towards the general and govern- ment officers and railway station at Barry Dock. The stile is inconvenient and hazardous. enough in itself, but when crowds of ignorant and offensive loafers continually hang about the place-sometimes completely preventing means of access to the stile, and indulging in obscene remarks to those who make use of the same- the evil is greatly intensified, and has now, so far as respectable people are concerned, become quite intolerable. It is, we think, a reflection upon the Barry Company that such a miserable stile-so unwelcomely associated with social surroundings—should serve as one of the prin- cipal means of access to their general offices, and the removal of the present hideous arrange- ments will be wholesome indeed. THE TRADES' COUNCIL. j The Trades' Council for the Barry District is now practically a new body, and we hope that in its own interest there will be no more back- biting. The accusers of the Council could not have chosed a more opportune moment than during the past few weeks for levelling their attacks, but the result must have been a sad disappointment to those who thought that the labour representative- body was to be a. thing of the past. No doubt the Council has lost a very able man in Mr. Rees, who retires from the office of secretary, and there will be great difficulty in filling his place. We hope that the Trades' Council will prosper, and that good work will result from its reconstruction, but its members must one and all remember that they are supposed to watch over the interests of the many and not of the few or individuals. THE POLICE AX]) AlTKUIiANCE WORK. In our last issue we directed attention to the excellent work carried out in this district by the St. John's Ambulance Brigade, and we note with gratification that the Standing Joint Com- mittee of the Glamorgan Quarter Sessions are alive to the great services which the police can at times render in case of accident. We are pleased that body has decided that the members of the police force shall be instructed, as far as practicable, to join the Ambulance Classes, and that a reasonable allowance will be granted them to defray expenses. Barry has in this direction set the example, but we regret to say that the departure of Police-sergeant Evans from our midst will leave a gap which it will be difficult to fill, but as our loss will be his gain we wish that success which he deserves. CRUELTY TO DOGS. We note with great satisfaction that at last the police have made a move in the direction of putting a stop to dog-fighting. One would scarcely credit the extent to which this form of cruelty is indulged in in this neighbourhood, and it is quite time that steps were taken to put a stop to it. It is a notorious fact that a person can scarcely walk through the principal thoroughfares, especially in the evening, without witnessing the disgraceful scene of men setting dogs to fight. We are glad that the police have punished one party, and we hope that they will keep their eyes open in the future for offenders in Barry Dock. THE TEACHING OF WELSH. On every hand we see signs that of the advance which the Welsh language is making in the day schools throughout the principality. 13arry has taken up the question with consider- able vigour, and we note that the resolution passed on Tuesday at the monthly meeting of the East Glamorgan Calvinistic Methodists called the attention of School Board managers to the importance of taking prompt action in the matter.
A SQUABBLE AT ST. MARY'S Iz…
A SQUABBLE AT ST. MARY'S Iz CHURCH. BARRY DOCK. RESIGNATION OF THREE OF THE OFFICERS. For some time past there has been a certain amount of tension in the relations existing between the clergy and a few of the laity in connection with St. Mary's English Church Holton-road,» Barry Dock, in the result that a meeting of the Church Committee held at the vestry on Thursday evening last, the Rector (the Rev. Morris) presiding, a heated discussion took place, and on the following day the unpleasant- ness eventuated in one of the churchwardens (Dr. Livingstone, a member of the School Board), the organist (Mr. W. H. Miller, manager of the local branch of the County of Gloucester Bank), and one of the choristers and sidesmen (Mr. F. P. Jones-Lloyd, solicitor, and member of the Local Board) sent in their resignation ,of the offices which they held. This state of things is, to say the least, deplorable, and the sooner matters are amicably mended the better. We understand that the Rector of Cadoxton (the Rev. E. Morris) has appointed Mr. H. Milsom, of Graving Dock-street, Barry Dock, rector's church- warden in place of Dr. Livingstone, who resigned a few days ago in consequence of the unpleasant- ness which has, unfortunately, arisen in connec- tion with the clergy and officers of St. Mary's Church, Holton-road, Barry Dock.
