PENARTH POLICE COURT.
PENARTH POLICE COURT. MONDAY.—Before Mr. J. Corbett (in the chair), Colonel Guthrie and Mr. J. Duncan. ATTEMPT TO DEFRAUD THETAFF VALE RAIL- WAY COMPANY.—David Lewis, Barry. was charged with attempting to defraud the Taff Vale Railway Company on the 28th September, by travelling with a wrong ticket. Mr. Ingledew (Messrs. 8ngledew, Ince, and Vachell, solicitors, Cauliff), appeared for the prosecution, and said there were a number of persons who continually used the Barry Company's privilege tickets in travelling over the Taff Vale Railway, and the nuisance had become insufferable lately.—John Paul, a ticket collector at Penarth Dock. said on the 28th Sep- tember he was on duty at the Barry gates examin- ing the tickets of passengers as they passed from the Penarth Dock to the Cogan Stations. Defen- dant passed and showed him a ticket which had a green back-it was a privilege ticket of the Barry Company. He called the defendant back, but lie made no reply, and walked away. After the pas- sengers had passed he went after the accused. He found him in one of the carriages of the Barry train. He asked him to show his ticket, when defendant replied. I have shown it to you once." Witness said he should like to see it again. He produced a return half-ticket from Cardiff to Penarth, but the date had been oblite- rated. The number of the ticket was 6,337. He (witness; roiu nun ne was not enuueu tu unci with that ticket, and asked him for his name and address. He begged him (witness) to take the fare, but he refused, stating it was too late, the matter having- gone too far.—Mr. William Henry Flinn, booking clerk in the employ of the Taff Vale Railway Company, said the ticket, the return half of which was produced, was issued on the 2nd of July, and when used was more than two months overdue.—Defendant pleaded guilty, and in reply to the Bench, Paul said there was a lot of this kind of work going on. many persons travel- ling with Barry privilege tickets over the Tafi.— The Bench said the offence had been proved, and it appeared to them that the nuisance was grow- ing. The offence was one which was not easily detected, and the magistrates must do their best to protect the railway companies. Defendant would be fined 10s. and costs, in all 19s., in default 14 days' imprisonment.
THE THEFT OF GOODS AT BARRY…
THE THEFT OF GOODS AT BARRY DOCK, Peter Page, seaman, was charged on remand with stealing a quantity of goods, the property of John Donovan. boarding-house keeper, 27. Station- street, Barry Dock, on the 27th September last. The evidence as reported in the South Wales Star last week was repeated.—Police-constable Stephen Davies produced various articles recovered since the last Court, which prosecutor identified.—-Mr. J. Scrubizzn., tailor and outfitter, Barry Dock, said that on Wednesday week last prisoner passed his shop between three and four in the afternoon, and witness asked him where he was going, and he replied to Uncle's to pawn these things," referring to a bundle under his arm. Witness said the pawn- shop is shut Wednesday afternoon," and prisoner entered his shop, and asked him to buy the things from him. He told him he didn't buy goods, but only sold them. Prisoner told him he had nothing, and asked for a loan of a few shillings which he would repay when he shipped. He gave him 2s., but did not advance it on the goods which witness put under the counter. The next day the police- man came, and asked him if Page left a bundle there. He produced the bundle, and gave it to the policeman. The bundle was partly open, and he saw a rug and a little suit.-The Ce.se was ad- journed until the Thursday Court at Cadoxton for the attendance of several witnesses. I
CHARGE OF .BIGAMY AG AliNol…
CHARGE OF .BIGAMY AG AliNol A BARRY DOCK ENGINEER. On Monday last at the Penarth Police Court (before Mr. J. S. Corbett, Colonel Guthrie, and Mr. John Duncan), Charles Olser, a marine engineer, of Travis-street, Barry Dock, was charged with committing bigamy by marrying Elizabeth Annie Hines. at Trull Church, Taun- ton. on the 31st November, 1891, his wife. Mary Edmonds, being alive.—Inspector Rees said that at U o'clock Saturday night, the 8th inst.. he received a certificate of marriage (produced) from Mr. Richard Guy, of Newton House. Barry Dock. From what he told him he sent for the prisoner, Charles Olser. to the police-station. At 11.30 he was brought there, and he showed him the certifi- cate produced, which purposed to be a marriage certifioate between himself and Mary Edmonds on the 24th January, 1888, from the Registrar's Office, Newport. He cautioned prisoner, and he said. "It's all right, that is my certificate." Later on he received another certificate from Elizabeth Anne Hines, dated 30th November. 1891, which he showed the prisoner, and told him he had received it from her at Mr. Guy's house. He said. Yes, that's right, she is innocent. She didn't I know I was married, I never told her. I have not seen my wife since June, last year. She told me she did not want me any more. I could get married if I liked. I didn't know I was doing wrong, and she wrote and told me afterwards that I could get married."—Prisoner said he had no questions to ask, as the statement was correct,- Deputy Chief-constable Wake asked for a remand for a week, which the Bench granted, and allowed bail as prisoner was in a very weak state of health -Mrs. Mackay, of Kingsland-crescent, Barry Dock, being bail.
CAUTION TO \EJ\ITGH,ANTS.
CAUTION TO \EJ\ITGH,ANTS. BEWARE OF BRAZIL. The following caution to emigrants has been lutely issued :— In continuation of the notice issued in April last respecting emigration to Brazil, the Emigrants' Information Office warns the public that the Brazilian Government are again endeavouring to introduce settlers in the tropical and other parts of Brazil. Seeing that these parts are. both in climate and other respects, wholly unsuited to British emigrants, and that great suffering has already followed British emigration to that country, in- tending emigrants are again most strongly warned not to go to Brazil, They should disregard any inducements which may be held out to them of ob- taining cheap passages, grants of land, or high wages, and should apply for further information to the chief clerk at this office. Emigrants' Information Office, 31, Broadway, Westminster, S.W., September. 1892.. We have also received the following letter on the subject TO THE EDITOR OF THE SOUTH WALES STAR. gir I enclose herewith a copy of a special notice with reference to emigration to Brazil, which has just been issued by the Emigrants In- formation Office, established by Her Majesty's Colonial Office to give reliable information to in- tending emigrants. It is believed that a special effort is about to be made to induce Welsh people to emigrate to Brazil, under the pretence of founding Welsh Colonies in that country. You may remember instances reported in the English newspapers last year of emigrants from the neighbourhood of Bradford (Yorks.), and other places who were induced to emigrate to Brazil, and who were forced to return to this country after experiencing great hardships, quite destitue. Every effort should be made to inform the Welsh people of these facts, and I venture to ask your assistance in circulating this warning.—Yours 1, 1 G L; faithfully. J- LALLINGER. LLOYD'S WRECK RETURNS. Lloyd's returns of vessels totally loat, con- demned, &c.. between April 1st and 30th June, 1892, have just been issued. THE FLUSHING OF THE DISTRICT.
THE FLUSHING OF THE DISTRICT. At the present time when sanitary matters are receiving such warm attention from property- owners, local authorities, and others, it would be well to state that Messrs. Morgan Bros.. Vere- street, Cadoxton, are the sole agents for this dis- trict for two of the best flushing cisterns in the market. Over 33,000 of them have been sold, and I they are used by the Birmingham Waterworks, the London Waterworks, and all the principal Railway Company's. Messrs. Morgan have a quantity of these cisterns in hand, and they are prepared to carry out the work at a very moderate price. As a great many hushing cisterns of a. cheap and inferior make are placed on the market house-owners should be careful to see that only those of guaranteed makers are used. [468
