To the Electors of the Parliamentary Division of East Glamorgan. Q_ENTLEMEN,— The period for which you elected me your Representative has expired, and I respectfully solicit a renewal of your confidence. During the time I have had the honour to repre- sent you in Parliament I have endeavoured to uphold those great Liberal principles upon which you first elected me. and I have supported all measures which appeared to me to be in the interest of the general well-being of the people. With Mr. Gladstone in power the Disestablish- ment and Disendowment of the Church in Wales will at once be taken in hand, and I ask you to show by your support that a just settlement of this great question is dear to the heart of the electors of East Glamorgan. 'c My fullest sympathies are with the industrial population, and as I have in the past steadfastly supported all measures for the improvement of their condition, so in the future I will aid all movements for the greater comfort, freedom, and happiness of that class upon whom our national prosperity depends. I am in favour of an Eight Hours Working Day for Miners, and a complete reform of our Electoral System and will support in its entirety the New- castle Programme, along with other great Reforms already dawning on the political horizon. I shall also continue to advocate a thorough reform of our Poor-laws, and strive to stop the fountain which feeds the stream of pauperism. I shall also pursue my efforts for the attainment of those aspirations for self-government ardently longed for by every patriotic Welshman, and I believe the day is at hand when our just demands will be recognised. And it will be my constant endeavour to secure the greater peace, prosperity, and security of our Empire. I remain, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant. ALFRED THOMAS. Bronwydd, Cardiff, 27th June, 1892. l354 To the Liberal Electors of the South Glamorgan Division. lyjY FRIENDS,— I offer you my hearty congratulations and my grateful thanks. The decisive victory you have won was gained in the face of grave difficulties. It was gained in spite of all the influences and inducements which could be exercised in support of the personal canvass made by my opponent during the last three years. You have steadfastly resisted all these influences and inducements., and have voted according to the dictates of conscience and justice. I beg to express my sincere sympathy for the large number of working men whose votes would have greatly increased my majority if onr reason- able request had been granted, that the poll should be taken on Saturday. I hope very soon to be able to thank in person each of the large band of volunteer workers who have shown such zeal and devotton to our cause, Your faithful Servant,. ARTHUR J. WILLIAMS. ¡THE DEFEAT OF THE SIR JOHNS.
¡ THE DEFEAT OF THE SIR JOHNS. A FEW weeks ago we were inclined to predict that the Tories would not gain a single seat in Wales. Though that sanguine prediction has not been realised, it must be confessed that "gallant little Wales" has done well.. The elections are not all over, but we think we are right in saying that only three members from Wales and Monmouthshire will sit on the Tory- side of the House. Colonel MORGAN has held his seat in South Monmouth with a greatly decreased majority Mr. HAN-BURY TRACY has paid the penalty of indifference J and absenteeism, and has lost the seat he won to the Liberals in 1886, and the lamentable dissention in the Liberal ranks, which forced Mr. HUMPH R EYS- 0\v$N to. retire, and which brought forward at the las moment Mr. HOWELL WILLLAMS, of Load on,, as the Liberal candidate, has caused Mr.. KENYON to retain the Denbigh Boroughs by a, very meagre majority. The election in West Denbigh has not yet been fought, but we shall be much surprised to hear that a reactionary politician of the type of Mr. CORNWALUS WEST has been returned. Even granting that Mr. WEST will be returned by a dwindling majority, there will only be four Anti- Nationalist members for Wales. Compare with this the Liberal victories in Wales. Merthyr has sent away the Tory who came awooing with a slap in the face that will smart for years. Sir EDWARD REKD, in spite of the most active, able, and unscrupulous Conser- vative opposition, both in the Press and on the platform, has increased his majority to a safe figure. Mr. ARTHUR WILLJAMS, in a very heavy poll, in spite of the exertions of squire and parson, in spite of the most insidious attack, has nearly doubled his 1885 majority. The 1886 election in South Glamorgan did not supply a fair test, as the Conservative candidate was an unknown man. This year, however, the poll has been heavier than it has ever been before. Sir MORGAN MORGAN has been nursing the constituency for the last three or four years, and the result may therefore be fairly taken to show the rela- tive normal strength of the two political parties in the division. In the Rho"ndda, MABON, through the interposition of Provi- dence, or of something else, was returned un- opposed but there is no doubt that, had he been, opposed, he would have been returned by a triumphant majority. In Mid-Glamorgan, t'ne rising Young Wales member was returned by a majority of 4,200, while Sir HuSSEY VIVIAN polled six times as many votes as his opponent. In Carmarthenshire we hear as hopeful and as inspiring a story. In the West- ern division, Mr. J. LLOYD MORGAN, was returned unopposed, and in the eastern division Mr. ABEL THOMAS defeated his Unionist opponent by nearly twice the majority which his predecessor had in 1885. In Radnor- shire Mr. FRANK EDWARDS has won a seat for the Liberals, and in Flint, Montgomery, Den- bighshire, and Carnarvonshire the Liberals have held their own. Mr. OSBORNE MORGAN'S wonderful victory by an overwhelming majority over Sir WATKIN .WvNN was as unexpected aa it was well deserved, while the Liberal win at Pembroke Boroughs was thQ result of hard fighting and untiring energy. The Monmouth Bqroughs have been WQtt by
