Another thing I will men- tion for the benefit of those young men who are wishful to possess that amount of knowledge-one "or two excellent books, which, if they would read would place them in a position, and give them an intelligent power of judging of the world and the II things around them superior to that of many "honourable and other gentlemen with whom "I am acquainted. CHRISTMAS MARKETS.—Inasmuch as Christmas Day and New Year's Day both fall on a Saturday, it has been arranged that the Cardigan Markets will be held on the preceeding day (Friday) in each week. BYE-ELECTION IN CARNARVONSHIRE.-This election took place on Tuesday last, and the re- sult, made known on Wednesday, showed that Mr. Rathbone, the Liberal candidate, had been elected by a majority of 1029 votes over Mr. Nanney, the Tory candidate. COURSING MEETING.—A day's coursing was held on Wednesday last, on the lands of the Priory Estate, when very good sport was obtained. A large company of sportsmen were entertained at luncheon at the Old Castle farm by Mr. J. Trollip. A CALL.—The Rev. Griffith Davies, London, the general secretary of the Calvinistic Methodist Association, has accepted a call from the Taber- nacle Church, in this town, to become its pastor. He will commence his duties in March. Mr. Davies will be an acquisition to the town and neighbourhood. TEMPERANCE HALL.—It is intended to give a series of penny readings fortnightly at the above place during the winter months, the first to come off on Tuesday evening next, to commence at 8 o'clock. We understand that an excellent pro- gramme has been arranged, so that a rare evening's entertainment may be anticipated. The proceeds are to be devoted to the building fund of the lodge. TOWN COUNCIL.—A meeting of this body was held on Friday, under the presidency of the Mayor, when a considerable amount of business was done. Mr. Woodward replied, in a very exhaustive speech, to Alderman Jenkins' speech at the previ- ous meeting, and contended that he had shown a deficiency of £ 2157 in his account, and if this sum had not been expended on the public build- ings, where was it ? A full report will appear in our next. LOWER TROEDYRAUR PETTY SESSIONS.—These sessions were held on Tuesday last, before Messrs. W. O. Brigstocke, T. H. Brenchley, H. S. Jones- Parry, and Savile Miles.—For deserting his ser- vice at Penar-uchaf, Aberporth, Stephen Davies, Ponthirwen, had to pay d63 damages and 8s. 6d. costs. For neglecting to send their children to school, on the information of the Attendance Officer, Evan Owen, labourer, Blaenporth, and David Jones, Waunlwyd, were fined 2s. 6d. each, including costs. These being the first prosecu- tions under the Education Act in this district, the defendants were cantioned not to offend again, or the full penalty would be inflicted. PRESENTATION.—An interesting presentation occurred at the Board School last week, when Miss Jane Lewis, for several years pupil teacher at the school, on the occasion of her leaving to take the assistantship of the Treorky Board Schools, was presented on behalf of the teachers, scholars, and parents of the Boys' and Infants' Departments, with a handsome walnut wood workbox and writing desk combined (fittings com- plete) as a slight token of their love and gratitude for the deep interest she has always taken in the discharge of her duties. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE COMMITTEE.—A meet- ing of this Committee was held on Saturday last, at the Shire-hall. 'The members present were Messrs. R. D. Jenkins (chairman), T. H. Brench- ley, W. O. Brigstocke, S. Jenkins, J. G. George, B. Rees, and Rev. J. M. Davies. The attendance officer reported the schools in a satisfactory state, with ths exception of a few cases of non-attend- ance at Dinas, Cilgerran and Moylgrove. He ap- plied for authority to proceed against the parents in several of the cases, but inasmuch as the bye- laws would come into force on the 1st of January next, the matter was postponed until the next meeting. The Clerk produced a copy of the bye- laws which had been provisionally approved of by the Education Department. They were ordered to be printed, and a notice of their deposition at the Clerk's office inserted in the local papers. The Supplements are eight in number, four of which are coloured one is a lovely little Picture, two are large embroidery designs, and there is the supplement of Paris fashions, con- sisting of fancy-ball dresses for ladies and chil- dren, besides ball and party dresses generally. An acting charade, some children's tableaux, and Christmas games comprise one supplement, and a polka, by the popular composer, Mr. Marriott, forms another. The Christmas story supplement contains some very seasonable contributions. The serial stories are very interesting; the illustrations are excellent. Useful features are as prominent as amusing in this Journal, which is bound to sustain its well-deserved celebrity. CHRISTMAS FAIR.—A very influential meeting was held in the Council Chamber, en Friday even- ing, the 26th ult., under the presidency of Mr. Lewis Evans (Mayor), for the purpose of impro- ving the fairs and markets of the town. It was ad- mitted by all that the object in view was a very desirable one, but the question was How to go about it?" At one time the fairs and markets of the town were in a flourishing state, but for some years had been gradually falling away. There could not have been any geographical reasons for such a falling off, as Cardigan was as near the railway as Newcastle-Emlyn, the markets and fairs of which place were very flourishing and commanded a large attendance of farmers and dealers. The reason assigned by those who spoke in the meeting was that the townspeople and local farmers took no interest in them, and that the fairs were not properly arranged so as to enable the farmers and dealers to visit them in conjunc- tion with those in the immediate neighbourhood and Pembrokeshire. It was suggested to change the date of the December fair to the 10th, so as give an opportunity to dealers to make their pur- chases for the Christmas markets, but this was found to be impracticable this year. The desir- ability of re-arranging the fairs, adding more to the present list, and establishing monthly markets was agreed upon; and all present were requested to use their influence in furthering the object in view. A number of gentlemen were elected as a committee to carry out the proposal to improve the next Christmas fair, which will be held on Mon- day, the 20th inst. As an inducement to farmers who have fat and other stock, and as a guarantee to dealers who may be disposed to come to the fair, it was resolved to apply to farmers and feeders to send a number of animals for disposal, so that an auctioneer might be engaged to dispose of the same by auction. The Mayor said that a number of dealers had already signified their in- tention to be present at the fair if a good show of cattle could be secured. Several gentlemen at the meeting promised to send some of their stock to the fair. It is to be hoped that the farmers of the locality will avail themselves of this opportun- ity to dispose of their stock, and that the efforts ot the Mayor to improve the fairs may be success- ful, so that he may be encouraged to proceed. COUNTY COURT.
COUNTY COURT. This court was held on Thursday last at the Shire-hall, before his Honour Judge Betesford. There were 89 plaints entered, most of which were disposed of by the Registrar. The following were the contested cases :— Havard v. Havard.-This was an action to re- cover the sum of JE10 16s. The defendant put in a set off of JEI8 16F. lOd. Mr. Abel Thomas, in- structed by Messrs. George and Son, appeared for plaintiff and Mr. John A. G. Evans for defendant. It transpired that the plaintiff, Mary Havard, resides at Holy Bush, and Margaret Havard, the defendant, lives at Penrhiw, Llanychllywydog, and were relations. The action was consequent on family transactions extending over years. De- fendant pleaded that plaintiff had borrowed from her husband, who had been dead about two years, the sum of JE17, for which plaintiff paid 17s. in- terest annually, and produced an account book in the handwriting of defendant's husband, showing such to be the case, After a long hearing, judg- ment was given for the amount claimed as set off, plaintiff to pay the difference, without costs. Claim for Balance.- Timothy Thomas, Foundry, v. David Price, farmer, Lampeter. This was a claim for 15s. balance of account due. Defend- ant hid paid E2 7s. 6d. into court, but an order for JE3 2s. 6d. had been obtained against defend- ant. An order was made for the balance due with costs. Ejectment.—The Guardians of the Cardigan Union v. Richard Jones and others.—This was an action to recover possession of the Old Poorhouse, Llangoedmore. Mr. Abel Thomas, instructed by Messrs. George and Son, appeared for the Guard- ians. The claim had been admitted and possess- ion given prior to the court day. Judgment was given accordingly, with costs. Wages Dispute.—Mitchell v. Thomas, and Thomas v. Mitchell.—Mr. W. Picton Evans for Thomas, and Mr. John A. G. Evans for Mitchell. This was a claim by a servant for wages due, Mr. W. W. Mitchell having deducted 12s., the value of a stone jar broken by plaintiff, out of wages due, and the remaining 6s. 6d. had been paid into court. His Honour held that as no contract had been entered into with respect to breakages and that the claimant was a minor, deduction could not be made out of wages due in respect of break- ages. Judgment was given for full amount claimed, with costs. Commission for SeUing.-Thomas Griffiths, auctioneer v. Thomas Parry Horsman. formerly 01 Penygraig, Cenarth. Mr. W. W. Mitchell for plaintiff, and Mr. Abel Thomas, instructed by Mr. Griffiths, Carmarthen, for defendant. This was an action to.recover the sum of JE16 18s. 6d., being one-third commission and interest thereon, for selling at Penygraig, Cenarth, in 1876. As full particulars were not supplied to the court, the case was adjourned to enable plaintiff to supply the same, defendant being allowed his costs for the day. Disputed Amount.—Elizabeth Thomas, Star, v. Evan Davies, Fronlwyd. -Plaintiff claimed a bal- ance of j67, due on a note of hand. Defendant contended that only f,3 12s. was due. Judgment was given for je7 and costs. An Unfortunate Spring Cart.-Reynolds and Brother, coachbuilders, Cardigan, v. Major Bailey, The Castle, Newport, Pem. This was an action to recover JE15, the value of a trap that plaintiff alleged defendant had ordered him to construct in May last. Defendant contended that he never gave an order for the trap, and he re- fused to take it, though plaintiff had sent it to him. Judgment was given for defendant with costs. Mr. John A. G. Evans for plaintiff, and Mr. W. Picton Evans for defendant. Disputed Liability.-Ellen Thomas, Pendre, Cardigan, v. David Philips, weaver, Mwldan, for £ 1 11s. 6d, amount due for medical attendance. Picton Evans ap- plied that the money paid into court in the ac- tion of Thomas and wife v. Benjamin James, be handed to him as the execution creditor had with- drawn. That in consequence of What People are Saying," the roads have been repaired, and the pavements likewise. That this is not the cause, but it is because they need repairing. That some of the streets still require repairing —Voidir-fair, Strand, and Greenfield-row, to wit. That the inhabitants of the latter place consider themselves deeply indebted to the Corporation for the witter supply. That the Council only require to have their work pointed out to them and then they do it immediately-that is, within a year or two. That a revival of the fairs and markets will be of considerable importance to the town. That the Mayor deserves the support of all in the project he has set on foot. That people who remain out late at night should go home quietly, and not disturb respectable folks who are peacefully slumbering. That the health of some of our townsmen is liable to be imperilled by their being crushed under walls that overhang Eben's-lane and Old Market-lane. That, as the matter has been reported to the Town Council and no instructions have been given, in the event of damage an action against the Cor- poration would lie. That this presents an excellent opportunity for persons having Superfluous heads, legs, or arms to dispose of them to advantage. That this submural method of, interment offers an economical alternative to the heavy fees re- quired by the Burial Board. That the scale of charges for the new cemetery is fifty per cent. too high. That people have been deterred from marrying by the extravagance of the fees, and that several are only waiting a reduction in the other fees to shuffle off. That they are walking about to save funeral expenses. That the fees should be reduced so that they may "go over."
