THE PARIS EXHIBITION.—In the list of exhi- bitors for the Paris Universal Exhibition, we find the name of Mr. J. H. Miles, Cardigan. CARDIGAN UNION SCHOOL ATTENDANCE COM- MITTEE.—The first meeting of the new committee was held at the Shire-hall on Saturday last. There were only three members present, viz., Messrs. R. Pikins, W. THE GOOD TEMPLARS.—A public meeting in connection with the Tivy Lodge of Good Templars will be held at the Guild-hall, in this town, on Tuesday next, when Plenydd (Ffestiniog), Rev. W. Rees, Llechryd, and others, will deliver ad- dresses on Temperance, to commence at 6.30. Pre- vious to the meeting, the members of the Tivy lodge will parade the town. REVOKING THE ORDER TO CLOSE HAVERFORD- WEST GAOL.—The inhabitants of Pembrokeshire will be pleased to learn that Mr. Wm. Vaughan James, the clerk to the magistrates, and deputy- clerk of the peace, has received a communication, informing him that the order to close the Pem- brokeshire prison had been revoked. A SILENT BURIAL AT ST. DOGMELLS On Friday evening last, a child of Nonconformist parents was to have been buried in the parish churchyard at St. Dogmells, but as the Rev. Mr. Jones, the newly appointed vicar of the parish, had found out that the child had not been regen- erated through baptism, he refused to bury it with Christian rites, and the little one was laid silently in its last home. The Rev. W. Morris, Capel Seion, officiated in the house. So much for the Christian charity of our so-called National Church! t LOWER HUNDRED OF TROEDYRAUR PETTY SESSIONS. The monthly sessions for this hundred were held at the Shire-hall, on Tuesday last, before Messrs. W. Buck, W. O. Brigstocke, Morgan Jones, and Capt. Jones-Parry. The following fishery cases were brought on for hearing :— FISHERY CASES. David Owen, water bailiff, v. Benjamin Bowen, Cilgerran, for unlawfully catching salmon peal in the Tivy, near Rhoshill, on the 22nd of April. Complainant being sworn, gave the following evi- dence :—I am water bailiff on the Tivy. On the 22nd inst., between 3 and 4 p.m., I was on duty on the Pembrokeshire side, opposite Rhoshill, when I saw defendant fishing with a rod and line. There was 50 yards between us. Thomas James and John Thomas, water bailiffs, were the other side. I did not see defendant catch the fish, but saw him concealing some fish by the pine end of an old house. I went to the spot in about five minutes afterwards, and found the salmon peal. Cross-examined by defendant: I saw you con- cealing them at the pine end of the shed. There were two others with you. I saw you take the fish out of your pocket and hide them. The two other water bailiffs corroborated the evidence of the complainant. Fined 10s. and 10s. 6d. costs. Thomas James, water bailff, v. James Jenkins, for unlawfully setting a net in the Tivy, between Coedmore and Forest, on the 13th of April, and also for fishing during close time on the above date. Complainant being sworn, gave evidence as follows:—-On the 13th instant, about 8 p. m., I was on duty near Coedmore on the Cardiganshire side. Defendant was coming up the river in his coracle when I saw him first; he was about 7 or 8 yards from me. I was then concealed. He afterwards went some 150 yards up the river, and set a net on the Cardiganshire side. I followed him up the river, and was within 20 yards to him when he set the net. I afterwards went down to him, and charged him with the offence. John Thomas, the other water bailiff, was with me when I charged him, and said, "Remember, James, that you are in it for setting this net. Defendant said Halloa," and then left. I then picked up the net, which I now produce. The net was fixed by a stone on the bank, and opened into the river. By the Bench: The net was fixed on the Cardi- ganshire side. It was light enough to recognise the defendant. Cross-examined by Mr. Mitchell: This net was fixed to a stone; I left the stone on the bank. I found defendant in his coracle on the river. De- fendant did not say that the nets were not his. I could not understand what he said to me. The defendant was spoken to by John Thomas. John Thomas, water bailiff, corroborated the evidence of the complaint. Mr. Mitchell having idmitted a previous convic- tion, and the conclusiveness of the evidence, threw defendant on the mercy of the Bench. Fined £ 2 10s. for using illegal net, and £ 2 10s. for fishing during closed time; in default,' two months' imprisonment for each offence, the net to be forfeited. Defendant was allowed seven days to pay. Mr. Howell, on behalf of the Board of Conser- vators, prosecuted, and Mr. Mitchell defended. REMOVAL CASE. Mr. W. G. George, Clerk to the Cardigan Union, applied for an order for the removal of Mrs. Fran- ces Davenport and child from the Cardigan Union to the Rugby Union. Mr. D. R. Baynes, relieving officer, proved Mrs. Davenport and child to be chargeable to the Cardigan Union. The order was granted. .fa BOARD OF GUARDIANS. The fortnightly meeting of this board was held at the Workhouse, on Wednesday last, when there were present-Messrs. J. T. W. James (chairman), R. D. Jenkins, Owen Thomas, John Griffiths, B. Rees, Lewis Davies, J. Lewis, T. Llewellyn, E. Philipps, T. Williams, and Rev. J'. M. Davies. ASSISTANT RELIEVING OFFICER. On the motion of Mr. R. D. Jenkins, seconded by Mr. J. Lewis, Sergeant Roberts was appointed an assistant relieving officer, to relieve tramps at the Cardigan Police Station, at a salary of £4 per annum, in lieu of Inspector Davies, who had re- signed. CASES OF REMOVAL. The Clerk reported that two paupers and their children had been removed from the Cardigan Union; one to Rugby, and the other to Haverford- west. A LUNATIC AT LARGE. Mr. Owen Thomas informed the board that Dr- Davies had sent a woman, who had the previous day come out of the County Prison, to the Asylum. She belonged to North Wales, and, by her account of the Denbigh Asylum, no doubt had been an in- mate of that Institution. She had been sent to prison from Aberystwyth. Mr. Jenkins remarked that it was a great hard- ship upon this Union that a person 01 that sort should become chargeable to the Union, not having lived in the place. rg After some further remarks, the Clerk was re- quested to communicate with the woman in ques- tion, so as to try and ascertain her settlement. STATE OF THE WORKHOUSE. A copy of Mr. Bircham's report respecting the condition of the Workhouse was forwarded to the Local Government Board for their information and perusal, and requesting that immediate attention be paid to it by the guardians. The Chairman: The store rooms have been in- spected, and a lot of old clothes condemned by the house committee. The Clerk: No; the matter is to be finally settled to-d;iy.. The Chairman: You were one of the committee, were you not, Mr. Llewellyn ? Mr. Llewellyn: No; I was only requested to tell the ragman to call for the condemned clothes (laughter.) RESIGNATION OF THE MASTER AND MATRON. The Master and Matron of the Workhouse sent in their resignation, owing to ill-health, and was accepted by the board, the time to expire June 30th. On the motion of Mr. Jenkins, seconded by Mr. Lewis, it was agreed that the board advertise in the local papers for a married couple to fill the vacancy. After some further discussion, it was resolved on the motion of Mr. Jenkins, seconded by Mr. T. Llewellyn, that the appointment of their successors together with the amount of salary, be taken into consideration that day fortnight. As the Cardigan Eisteddfod was to be held on the 12th of June (board day), the Clerk^vas instructed to ask per- mission of the Local Government Board to hold the meeting of the board on Tuesday, the 11th, so as to proceed with the election on that day. *T T> x> ^assessed HOUSES. t 668 ca^e(l the attention of the members of t e Assessment Committee to a number of new houses which had lately been built within the Union, and which had not been assessed. Mr. Jenkins I am happy to inform you that the Committee has anticipated your wish, and have ordered every parish to supply a fresh supplemen- tal list. Many have done so without asking them, and I should be glad to find that St. Dogmells had done so, but that is not the case. CALLS UPON OVERSEERS. Mr. B. Rees: I should like to know if "calls" served upon parties who are intended for overseers are legal. Some parties who had been nominated for St. Dogmells had been served with calls before they were appointed overseers. It was decided that the Clerk serve the appointed overseers with fresh calls, so as to set matters cor- rect and legally. PRESENTATIONS TO MR. SAMUEL OWEN, CARDIGAN. Last Tuesday evening, the members of Capel Mair Church, in this town, devoted a portion of their usual evening service to a farewell meeting on the occasion of Mr. Samuel Owen, clerk to Messrs. Jenkins & Evans, Cardigan, leaving for Ipswich, who has for many yearsbeenSecretary and Sunday School teacher, and also lately appointed a deacon in the above church. The members there- fore felt it incumbent upon them to show their ap- preciation of his services in some tangible form, The outcome of this feeling was that last Tuesday evening a very valuable gold albert chain, together with a gold medal bearing the following inscrip- tion:—"Presented to Mr. S. Oweji by tne mem- bers of the Welsh Congregational Church, Cardi- gan, as a slight token of respect, on his leaving the town," was presented by Mr. Thomas Griffiths on behalf of the church to Mr. Owen. In return- ing thanks, Mr. Owen made some very pertinent remarks, conveying his heartiest thanks for the very valuable present which had been given him, and at the same time remarking that he felt more gratified for the kind feelings which had prompted the gift than for the gift itself, valuable though it was; and he should look back upon this event as one which had afforded him more pleasure than all the past events of his life. Subsequently, addresses were delivered by several of the members, all of whom expressed the great regret felt by all at his departure, aod wishing Mm happineaa and pros- perity yn ngwlad y Sais." At the conclusion of the above meeting, another of a smilar nature was held at the Council Cham- ber, presided over by the Mayor. This meeting was convened by the members of the Mechanics^ Institute, of which Mr. Owen has been honorary secretary for upwards of 51 years, for the purpose of presenting him with a gold watch, in consider- ation of his valuable services to the Institute as secretary. The Mayor, in opening the proceed- ings, said he felt it a great pleasure and honour to preside on that occasion. He had known Mr. Owen since he was a child, but had never heard a slighting remark about him. This presentation showed us all that real worth is always' apprecia- ted, and that it is worth our while to so conduct our- selves as to make our departure felt; and in very pathetic terms then called upon ttie young men Sresent to endeavour to emulate Mr. Owen. The [ayor then presented Mr. Owen with the gold watch, and concluded by wishing him prosperity and happiness. Mr. Owen, in very appropriate remarks, acknowledged the gift, and concluded by most wittily observing that there was a great deal of talk now-a-days about keeping Greenwich and Railway time, but that he in future would keep his own time. The meeting was further addressed by the following gentlemen :—Rev. T. J. Morris, Messrs. Levi James, D. M. Palmer, Dr. Thomas, J. R. Daniel, H. R. Daniel, Lewis Evans, J. W. Meyler, and Rev. L. Beynon, all of whom en- dorsed the sentiments expressed by the chairman. The proceedings were closed with a vote of thanks to the Mayor for presiding. The watch was sup- plied by Mr. T.
