He ] ontended that she was to retransfer it to him on his elease, vhich she had refused to do. Buchanan and Tyndall, gas-fitting manufac- turers, St. Jamfs's square, Edinburgh. It was not extinguished until the whole of the stock was des- troyed. The smoke found its way through the floor and up a common staircase to three flats of dwelling- houses above, the occupants of which were awakened out of sleep by the suffocating smoke. Two men were rescued by a fire-escape, and several of the inmates got down the staircase; but four people-av old woman, a young man and woman, and a little girl— were suffocated in attempting to escape down the staircase.
