THE PASSING OF 1908.
THE PASSING OF 1908. With tott'ring steps the dying year Creeps slowly to his grave And soon above his mould'ring bier, In tangled masses wan and sere, The weeds of Time shall wave. So gently toll, with measur'd beat, His passing knell, low, soft, and sweet. And yet, 0 Year, we hail'd thy birth With plaudits loud and long; And joy-bells peal'd o'er all the Earth, And Nations welcom'd thee with mirth, With music, dance, and song. Now, by thy grave, Truth sadly pleads For some brief record of thy deeds. Hast left this Earth a fairer home Where human souls may dwell ? Is Europe now, from Rhyl to Rome, From Guildhall to St. Sophia's dome, A Paradise or Hell ? Have statesmen ceas'd to lie and cheat? IsHonour found where huckst'rers meet? Did'st thou on hist'ry's tablets trace One deed of lasting fame— Help the uplifting of our Race, Or from the Nation's soul efface One damning mark of shame ? HaveKings become more wise and great Since thou wast born, 0 ig'8 ? Say, doth the Church her arms extend To fold the wand'rers in, To prove the helpless outcasts' friend, The strong to check, the weak defend, And turn Mankind from sin ? Are senseless mumm'ries still allowed ? Or are her priests less crassly proud ? Go, rest in thine unhonour'd bed, Thou Year with failures cramm'd Of thee, with truth it may be said, Thou art the worthiest to be dead, The worthiest to be d-imn'd. Go, rest with all thy brood of ills, WithAustria's Faith andAsquith's Bills. Let dumb Oblivion's pall enfold Thy sores no Leach might cure, Thy peddling parties bought for gold, Thy Pensions that insult the old, And mock God's suff'ring poor, Thy starving children still unfed, And men who die for lack of bread. The wind howls wildly o'er the waste, The snow drives down the streets, But be 't at leisure or in haste, The rich may glut their pamper'd taste With wines and dainty meats. What care they for the poor that die In cellar low or garret high ? Ah Christ! Was it for this Thy life Was drain'd on Calv'ry's tree ? Forthis, whenDeath and PIell were rife, Did'st wage that long and bitter strife In dark Gethsemane ? Is this the fruit of Thy great plan To weld the Brotherhood of Man ? Sleep, then, in thy forgotten tomb The Year that now must reign May bring some surcease to our gloom, And with the rays of hope illume Our long-drawn night of pain. So, while for 19'9 we wait, Toll out the knell of 19'8. F. V. HARCOURT. Bella Vista," Prestatyn, N. Wales.
I.B.R.A.|
I.B.R.A. The eighth year of the Prestatyn Branch of the International Bible Reading Association will commence with the New Year. The Parent Society has been established since 1882. Its members number nearly one million, are distributed over (50 ditl'ercnt countries, and belong to upwards of 50 denominations. The object of the association is to promote the Daily Heading of the Bible in the home. That this is necessary may be concluded from the words of Dr G. Campbell Morgan at the last anniversary meeting There are thousands of Christian people who are endeavouring to live a Christian life, while they are neglecting their own personal study of the Word of God. I submit this to you, it is a commonplace thing to say, and yet the commonplace is the thing that men need to be reminded of over and over again, that you and I can no more live the spiritual life, and the Christian life, without perpetual and regular study of the Word, than we can live our physical life without proper susten- ance." The local branch has an enrolment of nearly 200 members. Anyone wishing to join may obtain cards of membership, etc., free, either in English or Welsh, by applying to the Hon. Local Secretary, Dr. Smith, Drakelow, Prestatyn.
