Ponth Police Court.
Ponth Police Court. Thursday, December 7th, before Mr. D. LIeufer Thomas (Stipendiary?, Messrs. Tom John, M.A., Daniel Enoch, T. Pascoe Jenkins, and David Thomas. ALLEGED THEFT OF TREASURY I NOTES. CASE AGAINST BLAENLLECHAU I WOMEN FAILS. STIPENDIARY AND NOVEL LEGAL I POINT. The Stipendiary gave his decision in the case of finding £ 2 10s. by Mary Maud Griffiths and Gladys James, married women, of Blaenllechau. The hearing was reported in our last week's issue. The evidence then given by Miss Annie Irene Edwards, a school teacher, Ferndale, was that she dropped two Treasury notes in the street for £1 each and one for 10s., which it was alleged was found in the street by the defendants and did not inform the police. His Worship ruled that in a case of that kind it was necessary to prove that per- sons who found such notes had a reason- able belief that they could find the owner. In the present case there was no evidence to prove that the defendants had such a belief. In a busy place like Ferndale it was not like picking up a coat, the owner- ship of which could be easily traced. With Treasury notes it was different, for few- people took the trouble to take the num- bers of them. The defendants would be discharged on a point of law, but if they wished to be honest they would make up the money and hand it over to Miss Edwards. He called a boy named Tibbie who saw the notes picked up, and compli- mented him on telling his mother of the fact. I A QUESTION OF LANGUAGE. TRAMCAR TROUBLE AT FERNDALE. Bert Egerton and Lewis Bun, colliery employees, Blaenllechau, were summoned by the Rhondda Tramway Company for causing an obstruction and using bad lan- guage on one of their cars on the 11th ult. Mr. Ernest Roberts, Pontypridd, prose- cuted. According to the evidence of In- spector Kearns, his attention was drawn to the defendants who caused a bother over paying an excess fare. Egerton was smok- ing a cigarette, and he ordered him to go on the top of the car if he wished to con- tinue doing so. This he resented and used most abusive language. Both men caused an obstruction on leaving the car, and tried to assault him, and threatened to knock his b—— head off. Mr. Horatio Phillips, who defended, pointed out that this was a threat, and the expressive word used was not bad language in law. Continuing his evidence, witness said he had informed two police constables of the men's conduct. Miss T. Mosley, conductress of the (.,r, corroborated the evidence of the inspector, adding that one of the defendants chal- lenged Kearns to fight. Mr. Horation Phillips submitted that the evidence was conflicting as to the smoking. The Stipendiary remarked that where there was smoke there was generally fire. Buffin in the witness box denied the Inspector's statement in every particular; neither he nor Egerton smoked, nor did lie or anyone else threaten the inspector or obstruct him. He had been 16 years in the district and never been before the Court before. He did not use bad language. Mr. Ernest Roberts Would you consider it bad language if anyone threatened to knock your b- head off ? No (laughter). Egerton said he had lived 14 years at Blaenllechau and held a clear record. He had been for a time in the Army and dis- charged owing to receiving a wound in the arm, and he would not have the full use of the limb again. He did light work at a colliery. It was not true that he smoked in the car, he had a cigarette in his mouth but it was not lit. The Stipendiary said it was quite in- credible to the Bench that as defendants tried to make out that the Inspector had trumped up a story against them. They were quite satisfied that the charges against them had been made out; Egerton had served his country and been wounded, and would be fined only 10s. for offensive language; Buffin 10s. for the like offence, and 20s. for obstruction. James Morgan, collier, Mardy, was ordered to pay a penalty of 30s. or 14 days for refusing to pay an excess fare. MARDY REFRESHMENT HOUSE I KEEPER FINED. KEPT HIS PLACE OPEN AFTER SHOP I HOURS. Enrico Belle was summoned under the Shop Hours Act for selling chocolate in prohibited hours. The police evidence proved that two girls were seen going to defendant's shop and purchasing chocolate after 8 o'clock. Supt. John Williams, Deputy Chief Constable, informed the magistrates that small shopkeepers ob- jected to Belle keeping open after they had to shut. Fined 40s. A REMINDER FOR FORGETFULNESS. James Rees, butcher, Tylorstown, was charged with failing to subdue his light under the Order now in force. He told the police he was sorry for the omission, but the fact was he had forgotten all about the lights. Defendant was fined 30s. MISCELLANEOUS. Saunders, lreorky, for leaving Ins J lorry unattended and obstructing the high- way was fined R2. John Roberts, Tonyrefail, had to pay 40s. for getting drunk at Tonyrefail. Charged with being drunk and creating a disturbance at Pontygwaith, William Thomas was asked by the Stipendiary if he would sign the pledge, but he declined to do so. He was ordered to pay 4s. costs and bound over, and placed on probation for 6 months.
