Ystrad-Rhondda. I An inquiry touching the death of Mr. David Harries Davies, grocer, 198 William- street, Ystrad Rhondda, was held un Saturday, the 9th inst., at the Gelligaled Motel, IJy Mr. K. J. Rhys (coroner). It appears that the deceased fell off the roof of a shed at the rear of his premises on the Thursday previous. A verdict of Accidental death was returned.

Lecture on Co-operative Allotments. The Rhondda is nothing unless it is prac- tical, and this iillds exemplification in the way the allotments have been taken up to utilise every available piece of land to in- crease our home vegetable supply. To this end expert opinion was sought, and on .,oug i i i iii d o l Tuesday last at the Gell 1 Hotel, Gelli, Mr. Walter Williams, Brecon, secretary of the South Wales Branch of the Agricultural Organisation Society, addressed a crowded meeting on the Advantages of Co-opera- tion in the Cultivation of Allotments." The chair was occupied by Mr. Thomas ) Holmes, supported by Mr. Richard Thwaites, R. U. D. C. This was the first I of a series in the district for the purpose of organising allotment holders, of which there are now many hundred in the f| Council's area. Mr. WHHams. who was warmly vocoiyod directed attention to the necessity in the present crisis of growing all tbat was pos- sible of our own food supply, and to get as much out of our soil as we could it was a ( duty of national importance. To do the work well there must be co-operation ill order to procure fertilisers, seeds, and potatoes in bulk, and of the best quality Bbtainable. As an instance of co-operation many allotment societies had hulked their order for seed potatoes for next season, and in view of the necessity of stamping out wart disease there would 1)(' immune varieties procured and grown by farmers approved by the Board of Agriculture the combined order sent was for wet! over 100 tons (hear, hear). The model rules of the A. 0. S. were I sIgned uring the evening. Mr. Lawrence, Board of Agriculture, Pontypridd, spoke interestingly on the question of wart, disease.' Both spea kers and the chairman were accorded votes of thanks at the close of the proceedings.

Treherbert. Among the pupils at the Tonypandy Higher Elementary School who were can- didates as boy artificers (Royal Navy) at a recent examination, Trevor Williams (15), son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Williams, Taff- street, Treherbert, was successful. One of the most popular pastors in Tre- herbert, the Rev. David Williams, Horeh I Welsh (C.M.) Church, is doing .excellent service with the Y.M.C.A. somewhere in i England. The troops who come in touch with Mr. Williams express keen apprecia- tion of his services and derive, much com- fort from that source. While returning home on Monday even- ing from a preaching engagement in the Rhondda, the Rev. "r,\ T. Griffiths, Manse Villa., Caerau, aged 74 years, was taken ill at the Blaenrhondda Railway Station and died soon afterwards. The reverend gentleman was exceedingly well known in the Rhondda, and had been pastor of Hermon Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church at Caerau for many years. One of his sons, Mr. W. T. Griffiths, is an assis- tant master at one of the Mid-Rhondda Schools, and also secretary of the Judge's Hall Committee. The reverend gentle- man's brother, Mr. John Griffiths, hair- dresser, Llwynypia, is also very woll known in Mid-Rhondda.

I Treorchy. Treorchy School Children, under the able direction of the headmaster, Mr. Howell Howelis, have again distinguished them- selves in the splendid way in which they assist charitable movements. On Thursday evening of last week they responded to the (-zill of the London Missionary Society for financial assistance, and were largely for providing a successful in Is- eellaneous concert at Hermon (W.C.) Church. An excellent programme had been got up, and in addition to the ren- derings by the choir (boys and taken from the varous standards in the Treorchy Scliools), solos, etc., were give;, by the fol- lowing local artiste. -,Sol)riiio, Madam J. j T. Jones; Contralto, Miss Maggie J. Jones; I Violinist, Miss Tilly Thomas, L.R.A.M. Elocutionist, Mr. J. J. Thomas. Alderman Enoch Davies, J.P., Treherbert, presided, j and presented a cheque. The secretarial duties were ably carried out by Mr. Dan Lj Davies, Myrtle-hill, Treorchy. Intimation has been received at Tre- orchy that two local heroes have won -Nillitary Medals for conspicuous gallantry in the field. Their names are Private Win. j Howelis, son .of Mrs. M. Howelis, 110 High- street, and Private Jack Aubrey, son of Mrs. Aubrey, of 88 Stuart-street. Both are in the Devonshire Regiment, and were employed at the Abergorchy Colliery before enlisting at the outbreak of war. Private Howelis, in addition to his gallantry in the field, rescued a comrade whilst 011 sentry duty previously. A sergeant of the regiment was reported to have fallen into a river. One of his men jumped"*in and made an attempt at rescue, but got into difficulties himself and shouted for help. Private Howells heard his cries, and after a strenuous effort rescued him. Later he was informed that the sergeant was still in the river, and Private Howelis again re-. turned to the water and found the sergeant lifeless. The Abergorchy Billiard Team, who have -made excellent progress during this season, were at home to Tydraw, Trelierbect, 011 Wednesday evening, and were victorious by 134 points. The scores Treorchy. Mr. Miles suit- ably responded. A musical programme. arranged on splendid lines, was gone through, and quite an enjoyable time was spent-.
