Exciting Scene at Trealaw.
Exciting Scene at Trealaw. Exciting scenes were witnessed at a fire which occurred late on Tuesday night at 121. Ynyscynon Road, Trealaw. The premises consisted of a newspaper shop and an adjoining house, and when the fire broke out Mrs. Lloyd, wife of the occupier. John Lloyd. and two children had retired to bed. P.S. Beirnio. P.C. Porter, and other officers were soon on the scene, and found a big blaze in the shop. They immediately roused Mrs. Lloyd. and carried the two children down- stairs to safety. i The difficulty of their task in extin- guishing the fire was increased owing to the fact that the water supply was cut off in consequence of the recent drought Neighbours, however, brought water in lioii-?(-vei-. I)roii, lit v.-atei- iii what would have undoubtedly been a very serious blaze. As it was, the damage was not very great.

WELSH IN A WEEK.L'
WELSH IN A WEEK. A New and Rapid Method of Learning Welsh by means of conversation. Price 3d., by post, 4d PRESS NOTICES. Well put together and neatly printed, it is a useful compendium, particularly to the Sassenach travelling in Wales. It is not a large volume, but as they usr-o to say cf Lord Robert* in the Boer nr. j it's little and good. '"—(.'umbriii I/ody ].]1". •• No author's name is given, but it appears to be the work of an expert in the art of teaching. It is a book that is likely to have a large sale.—F (iohiiad. It contains a very useful vocabulary of everyday words. There is also in thtJ second part of the I)oo,. a. series of short sentences which are used by people daily. The book is constructed very much after the model of the Continental guide book. Many English people living in Wales will find this small book very handy, and to the commercial man who frequently is called upon to use the Welsh language, this convenient guide will be an asset. It is published in a convenient form, and its size will accommodate itself easily to the average pocket in both ways. the cost is oill v —-Mcrthyr Express, June 7th. 1913. '• It cannot be claimed that this little book will enable anyone without any pre- vious know ledge of the Welsh language to master all its intricacies—its idioms, its mutations, its gender of inanimate object8, &c., in the course of one week. But this contribution oi tl;e I Rlioiidda. Leader Prpss affords valuable aid to anyone who seeks to learn Welsh by means of conver- sation. It is a nov >1 method and a rapid one. and we recc :■ mend it to all who desire to obtain.a (>d working knowledge of the language >f Gwalia."—A be rdit re I.iinjrr, June 21st. 1913. It contains a guide to the pronun- ciation or Welsh letters, and this is a fairly correct one. A vocabulary oi words and conversational translations are given w hich should prove useful, and a fair attempt is made to convey the Welsh idiom. The book should prove useful to tlx. tourist in Wales who desires to carry on short conversations on a journey or in the hotel or shop. —South Vi'olcx Daily Nrw*. May 3rd, 1913. the booklet is not pretentious in bulk, but, like the egg. it is full to the last page of proof that it is true to the claim which it makes. Where there is ample evidence tint the native language is far from being i.; a moribund state, but the contrary, giving every evidence on the street even t;-at a revival is taking place, such a booklet is a welcome addi- tion to the support of the prevailing treiia.South Wales Daily Post. By diligent application of the conver- sational method employed, especially if a Welshman be handy to help the lame foreign dog over the stiles, a considerable speaking acquaintance with the ancient language of the Principality may be obtained in a short time. • May undoubtedly be fairly described as an ex- cellent primer, which shows very quick results—a great thing in language study. Welsh deserves to be studied for its beauty alone, but it also has a distinct commer- cial advantage in a very wide area, and anything which tends to make its acquisi- tion easy deserve- to be encouraged.
