I Gilfach Goch Preaching Services.—The annual preacn- mg services were held at Calfaria (W.B.) Chapel on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday last. The preachers were the Revs. Waldo Roberts, Treorchy; J. Lee Da vies, Brynamman; Gilbert Jones, Llan- gloffan; and Idwal Jones, Llwynypia. The services were well attended and excellent II discourses were delivered. I Anniversary services were also held at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, the j preacher being the Rev. W. C. Crimes, of Cardiff. On Monday tney had their annual tea, at whicn great numbers were present.

I Treherbert Horse Show. The second annual ireherbert and Dis- trict Horse Show wa.s held on May Day at the Treherbert Athletic Grounds, and proved both attractive and interesting. The quality of the horses as exhibits, as well as in the racing sections, was very high, and rendered the competitions acute. The judges were: —Messrs. D. Roes, Tylorstown; T. Williams, Cowbridge; W. I Cymanfa at Tonypandy. The annual "cymanfa ganu" of the Calvinistic Methodists of Mid-Rhondda was held on Monday at Bethania, Mr. J. T. Rees, Alus. Bac., conducting. The day wa,s fortunately most favourable, and a- memorable festival was the result. At the morning meeting, Mr. Jenkins (Pisgah) presided. The children sang most delight- fnlly. and gave ample evidence that their work had been thoroughly prepared. The authcm, "Rhyfelgan y Plant,' was a feature of the meeting. At the Tone Sol-fa examination the examiner, Mr. Dd. R ees, Blaenclydach. reported an advance on last year's numbers, but that illi cue had entered from Scion, Pisgah and Bethania. He sincerely hoped that the people in authority would take a real interest in the work next year. Dr. 1. L. Morgan. Clydach Vale, with his cus- I tomary generosity, had presented the committee with a magnificent banner for the best Sol-fa class last year. This year the competitors were Libanus and Penuel, and the examiner awarded it to the first- named. The teacher of the class, Miss Agnes Thomas, was presented with the banner by the Rev. J. Morgan. Prizes were also awarded by the examiner to Bella Jones and Muriel Morgan for the best work done in the Jaulor Elementary and Intermediate Grades. In the afternoon and evening, success- ful meetings were again held, the several hymn-tunes being rendered with much fervour. Two anthems were contributed, "Moeswch i'r Arglwydd and Cenwcli ynllafar." Very fine renderings were also given of "Moliant" (D. Rees), it befog sung at both meetings. In the hymn-tune competition, the prize was awarded to Mr. John Lewis, A.C., Blaen- clydach. The chairmen were the Rev. T. H. Morgan and Mr. D. J. Jones. Misses M. B. Griffiths and A. Rees played the accompaniments throughout, and Misses Lizzie Davies and A M. Jen- kins contributed solos. The officers of the committee were:- Chairman. Rev. D. Davies, B.A. • trea- surer. Mr. T. I Sacred Cantata at Gelli. from Jianger to Cross" was the title of a sacred oantata given lkv the choir of the Gospel Mission, Gelli Cross- c h o i r -o f th(3 Gospel ing, on Thursday, the 1st inst., at the Shady Road Mission Room, which had been very kindly lent for the occasion. The chair was occupied by Mr. Samuel Hedditch, Ton-Pentre. The singing of the choir, which was ably conducted bl Mr. Isaac Martin, was excellent. The accom- panist, Mr. John Morgan, is worthy of the highest commendation tor the excel- lont manner in which he performed his duties. The soloists all sang in a manner which was greatly appreciated by the crowded audience. The soloists were Mr. W. R-oderick, Ton, who very kindly gave his services-he being the only non-mem- ber of the choir—and the following mem- bers of the choir -Sopranos, Miss Rosina Margery, Mrs. W. Stephens, and Mrs. James Hallet; contraltos, Mrs. Bennett, Mrs. Bartlett, and Master Joseph Margery; tenors, Mr. Clifford Norman. Mr. Edgar Margery, and Mr. Samuel Sibley: bass, Mr. David Parry and Air. William Margery. Valuable assistance was rendered by Mr. Enoch Davies and Mr. William Stephens, who were stewards for the evening. The concert was a decided success, all present thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Soar Chapel, Clydach Vale Last lhursday and Saturday evenings, the 1st and 3rd inst., two grand perform- ances of J. 0. Murdoch's "Happy Hearts" were given at the above chapel by Soar Band of Hope Choir, conducted by Mr. Arthur Jones. Tht Soar Orchestral Society also rendered assistance. Accom- panist, Miss M. AI. Rhondda Tramway Bill. I The Rhondda Tramway Bill. which w?s I left over from last week, came agam before a Select Committee of the House of Commons on Tuesday. The part outstanding was regarding the amount of contribution trom the com- pany to the Llantrisant Council for road widening and repairs, and clauses were agreed whereby, roughly, the company agree to pay a third of the cost of widen- ing and maintenance, in the case of widen- ing not to exced £ 1,333, and in regard to maintenance not to exceed three- eighths of a penny per car mile run. The Bill was ordered to be reported for third reading.

Gilfach Goch. Singing FestivaL-The annual festival of the Calvinistic Alethodists of the Coed Ely district was held this year at Libanus on Alondav. the oth inst. The. conductor was Prof. D. Jenkins, Alus. Bac., Aber- ystMyrh. The morning meeting was given entirely to the juveniles. The singing was of a high standard, and was greatly en- joyed by the audience. The anthem, Rhyfelgan y Plant," was rendered very spiritedly, and deserved all the praise hestowed. on it. In the afternoon- meet- ing the adult choir was present in full strength, and justice was done to the tunes that required powerful voices to give them a proper rendition. The tunes that require subdued tone were very beautifully sung. Capel Tygwvdd." Shawmut." and "Alexandria," and the. anthems, -Nloeswch vr Argl,ydd anct "Am fod fy Iesu'n fywT," were the out- standing features of the afternoon meet- ing. In the evening, the capacious build- ing was crowded, and the singing attained a very high standard in quality and pre- cision. The weather' was favourable and turned to the advan- tage of the festival. Alessrs. J. M. LIMITS OF ANIMAL INTELLIGENCE. Animal intelligence is like the figures and desig ns made in a casting; it is not acquired or much changed by experience, while human intelligence is slowly developed through m&D. educative capacity. The animal is a creature of habits inherited and acquired, in a sense that man is not certain things may be stamped into the animal's mind, and certain things may be stamped out; we can train it into the formation of new habits, but we cannot educate or develop its mind as we can that of a child.
