LATE CORRESPONDENCE. A DISCLAIMER FROM PENARTH. To the Editor of the "BARRY DOCK NEWS." SIR,-I notice in your issue of the 9th inst. a paragraph under the heading, 11 Nursing the baby, and, therefore, she could not come.—A well- known personage at Penarth Police-court." Now, as this remark of Mr Belcher's would lead the public to believe that I am a notorious character, and well-known at Penarth Police-court, I take this opportunity of giving a flat denial to the statement, as I have never in my life appeared at the court but once before. I may be well-known in Penarth to the majority of the residents, but I defy Mr Belcher, or anybody who may have been his dictator, to say a word against my character. -I remain, faithfully yours, ELIZA MCMURBAY.
PRESENTATION TO A PENARTH…
PRESENTATION TO A PEN- ARTH ENGINEER. On Wednesday evening last a number of engineers employed on the Penarth Slipway as- sembled at the Ship Hotel to present the late foreman, Mr William Munroe, who has left to take charge of the Windsor Slipway, with a testimonial, as a token of the kind feeling which existed between him and his late colleagues. Mr Sayes presided, and, after dinner, served in Mr Jack James' well-known style, the presenta- tion was made. Those present included Messrs McArthur, Patterson, Illingworth, Sims, Pavey, T. Morley, William Morris, E. Thomas, J. Smith, H. Wright. H. Wood, F. Gibson, J. Russell, H. Tutton, J. Thomas, J. Owens, &c. In making the presentation, which consisted of a handsome com- bination clock and weather-guage, Mr Patterson said it would be useless for him to enlarge upon the circumstances which had called them together. The part allotted to him was one which afforded I him great pleasure, having been connected with Mr Munroe for fourteen years. His experience of him throughout the whole of that time was that he was kind and considerate to all under him, and the balance had to be very delicately held where therelwere numbers of men of all classes to be ruled. Mr Munroe had always discharged his duties with much kindness, great consideration, and forbearance, and he. believed there was not a man on the works who did not regard that occasion with sorrow, but at the same time rejoiced at Mr Munroe's promotion. (Hear, hear.) They all hoped he would be long spared to enjoy the society of his friends, and that he would be equally successful in his new enter- prise. (Applause.)—Mr Munroe returned thanks, and said he would always look upon the present with feelings of great pleasure. He had taken a very important step, and he would have to work hard. but he was not afraid to do so. (Applause.) —Other toasts followed, and the enjoyment of the proceedings was enforced by songs.

You are the light of my life," she said to him as she bid him good-night at the front door. Put out that light," growled her father at the head of the stairs. And the front door slammed. A traveller who had been in the Far East told a French lady that Hindoo girls are taught to think of marriage as soon as they can talk. She replied, French girls are not. They don't require teach- ing." Young wife—" George, dear, I am really ashamed of you. After all I have done to persuade you to smoke a more respectable pipe, I find you still using that low, dirty, foul, obnoxious black thing! Young husband-" Don't be angry, darling I cannot help it. You know it's one of the invoilable laws of nature that man must sooner or later, return to clay." Mr Highliver (to his valet)-" James, you are evidently an honest man. and I've never missed a penny since I had you, but I don't see how a man on your wages can have so much spending money." James-" You buys a mighty big lot o' champagne, sah, fo' you se'f an' you' friends." Indeed, I do —enormous quantities, best imported, fresh from France. Mr Wineman doesn't give you a commis- sion, does he ?" Oh, no, 44 sah but he pays me a big price for the empty bottles." Here is one of Sir Wilfrid Lawson's stories.—An Irishman, brought before a magistrate for drunken- ness, said in excuse, The fact was, your honour, my wife and I lived very unhappily together." 44 Oh," said the magistrate, I suppose you took to drinking to get rid of your unhappiness ?" "I did," replied Pat. Very foolish," said the magis- trate. After a while Pat was up again for a similar offence, and he replied, My wife's dead, your honour." 44 Oh," said the magistrate, ''and you took to drink on that account." "Yes," answered Pat," I did, your honour; I never could bear prosperity." We often hear of a person who has command of many languages, but it is seldom that one is master of his own tongue. A poet says that a baby is a new wave on the ocean of life." It strikes us that a fresh squall would exprese the idea better. Mrs W. I know I'm cross at times, John; but if I had my life to live over again I should marry you just the same." Mr W. I have my doubts about it, my dear." Boatman-" No, mister. I can't let you have a boat now. There's a heavy swell just come on." Irate 'Arry-" Swell, be hanged! Ain't my money as good as 'is ? An Irishman, with a heavy bundle on his shoulder, was riding on a street car platform. He refused to put it down saying-" The horses have enough to do to drag me I'll carry the bundle." Simpson—41 Whatever induced your uncle to marry the widow of a man who was hung ?" Jimpson—" He had been married to widows before, and says he was tired of having the virtues of a former husband constantly flung in his face." Landlady-" You can't tell me that you found no comfort in your bed last night, Mr Newman." New Boarder (who found his bed quite hard)- Well, if it was comfort, ma'am, it was pretty solid comfort." Mrs Hiftier-" I discharged the footman to-day, Henry." Mr Hiflier-" What for, my dear ?" Mrs the brutal fellow washed my dear little Fido with common soap instead of scented soap." Rev Longnecker-" Dear, I do wish I could think of some way to make the congregation keep their eyes on me during the sermon." Little Tommy—44 Pa, you want to put the clock right behind the pulpit."
