The Hospital Saturday. The ladies who have rendered such valuable service, in past years in support of the Hospital Sainrday movement met in j Wrexham on Wednesday to arrange the collect- ing campaign for the next annual evaut, which it was decided to hold on July 28th. Mr J. Oswell Bury, the chairman of the Infirmary Com. mittee, drew attention to the present needs of the hospital, making special reference to the de- crease of subscriptions, as well as to the need of an increased annual income in the future in con- sequence of the additional beds about to be pro- vided in the Overton Block now in course of erection. It might be interesting to know that the amounts received since the movemenE was inaugurated in 1894 were as follow:— £ 30 93 Id, £92 13s 7d, £ 98 14s, JS105 12s 3J, JE130 8s 60, and iE94 8s 8d.

A Plain Statement. The English Church Union has recently held its annual meeting, and has unanimously made the explicit declaration which follows —" We, members of the English Church Oniou, holding fast to the faith and teaching of the oae Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church—that in the sacrament of the Lord's Supper the bread and wine, through the operation of the Holy Ghost, become in and by consecration, according to our Lord's institution, verily and indeed the body and blood of Christ; and that Christ our Lord, present in the same most holy sacrament of the altar under the form of bread and wine, is to be worshipped and adored,—desire, in view of present circumstances, to reaffirm, in accordance with the teaching of the Church, our belief in this verity of Christian faith, and to declare that we shall abide by all such teaching and practice as follow from this doctrine of the whole Catholic Church of Christ." It cannot be said that there is anyiacS: of clearness in this statement. It helps to clear the ground, and to remove from the minds of most people any doubts which may have existed

The Children's Bill. The Government have done an unkind and an unworthy thing in declining to give time for the consideration of the Children's Drink Bill. This measure, which had pjssed its second reading, sought to prevent children under the age of sixteen being served with drink in a public-house. The Bill had the approval of the leading men on both sides of the House, and although the Government has hardly enough of work to keep the House of Commons going fall time, the useful Bill has been snuffed out. We believe that however much we may differ as to dealing with the adult drinker, we are all agreed that the longer a child is kept away from public- houses and drinking associations the greater chance has he of becoming a sober and temperate citizen. Mr Balfour's speech, in refusing time for the consideration of the Bill, was pitifully weak, and we are very sorry that the Government had not striven to do something for temperance legislation. But the election is near, and the strongest Government of modern times %iant-z votes. This is one way of getting them—so Balfour thinks.

Wrexham Parish Church. Now that the scaffolding around the tower of the Wrexham Parish Church has been erected the Architect (Mr Prothero) has been able to make a thorough examination of what is required to place this portion of the edifice in a structurally sound condition. This has revealed the fact tUJt although from the ground the tower appeared superficially in a good condition, on being minutely inspected the masonry was found to be in a hopeless state of decay. This was found to be more especially the case with the upper part of the tower, where the ornamentation is more elaborate, and where the stonework is more exposed to the elements. Much of the face of the tower was found to be in a crumbling state when slight pressure was applied. The pinnacles. turrets, and battlements are very bad. The Architect estimates that fully £3,000 more will now be required, thus making the total cost of the reparation iE8,000 instead of £ 5,000. This means that a tremendous sacrifice will have to be made by those who wish this architectural treasure to be preserved. Under the circumstances the Executive Committee have decided to only pro- ceed with the reparation of the upper part of the tower in the first instance, and to carry out the repair of the nave in sections, such as treating the tracery of the windows, or the roof, and so on, whichever part the Architect considers most necessary, having regard also to the money in hand. A little over £ 3,000 has been subscribed up to the present.
