-*----WHAT ARE POLITICS? I
WHAT ARE POLITICS? I I wo. III. x oiitics are not a Ii?ht and trivial subject, but That which demands the closest attention of tbe best powers of the human miDd, mutually C.- oper?ticg in perfect equilibrium, and paying due attention to the claims of the heart and the head the affections aLd th? intellect; the soul as well as the body. There is a peculiar training, eon- tinuous and severe, requisite to form a wise politician. No profession so inexorably demand? great powers, intense application, close watching of all phenomena, ana boundless versatility of genius, and knowledge co-extensive with the uni- verse of being, astin- successful pursuit of politics. Its, text-book is man. Its object the greatest good to the greatest number. The sum and substance of every science and all knowledge is the science cf politics, towards which every other knowletge tends. All the discoveries and researches in the starry heavens above, and on the earth be. neath, and in the waters under the earth, are sub- servient to this sublime scicnce; and the value of every other knowledge depends upon, and is measured bytheextcnt ot it* usefulness in rendering astistance to understand thoroughly tho true and een-preheni-ive import of political knowledge an t political action. And before this noble science can be fully understood a man must be, to a cer. tain degree, acquainted at least with the rudi- ments, or the results, of every other science and Knowledge; which thing has not yet been attained to but by the favoured few, and, accordingly, an adequate knowledge of politics is not the common property of the many. And it i? an impera- tive duty upon all those that hold high and responsible positions to edu- Calc the populace in those things indispensably necessary to ona'ulc them to act laithluily and honestly according to tho political responsibilities of their stations and avecatione. For the greatness and prosperity ot every country depend upon the political light 01 the subjects. the political light of the citizen ought to be commensurate with his political power. It is not a safe thin? for a country that its children Euould be i;;MrM)t ot political knowledge. As long as mon to whose hands political power is entrusted are ignorant of political truths and inquiries there is no safety for the constitution of the country, ncr for any other human fabric. To rouse the !JJ,8ÎOOd whilc the intellect remains unenlightened is x most dangerous experiment. No nation, or country, has ever passed through this terrible crisis without verging on the brink of darkness and decay, exhausted in its resources, and shorn of its power. And God only knows how near we reached the edge of this awful chasm in tho) aut-imn ct li /<>. And hero we might remark that if half the power and energies that arc mis- chievously expended by our political leaders in vilifying and traducing one another were utilised in enlightening the nation in the elements of politieial science, the prosperity of the country would be more secure, and the influence of Britain for good on the world would be tenfold enhanced. And we might furnish a long cata- logue of national revolutions iu ancient and n,odern times that put an end to strong govern- ments because their subjects did not fully under. stand their true wants and duties political. From the ancient histories of Wales and Greece, and that profound atd sad utterance" If thou hidgt known in this thy day the things that pertain to thy peace," own to tne Constantinople and Paris of our day, politic-il ignorance has been a fertile source of national suffr-ring and humiliation, And if Gre-tt Uritain is to cc utinuj in the future happy and prosper- ous, and to influence other natous for good, ai the home of political and religious freedom, eb?i must enlighten her people with the knowledge ot the nature and conditions of the permanency and stability of kingdoms. Nor, in treating this snbject, we must endeavour at least to rise abyc the bounds and exigencies of party, bigoted and one-sided, and not to make it a vantage ground to advance and plead the na-row end s and aims of blind partisanship and political arbitioyi nor to seek the good of one class of The population at the npeme of the whole country. The prosperity and weal of the British Empire ought to be our aim, and not of this party or that party to which we may happen to belong by accident or by con- viction. And this is the point which I wish to call your attention to, that yon may exercise your political power intelligently and conecieutious'.y for the good, in the truest and fullest sense of the word, of the whole nation and not a part only. Aul I will endeavour to put before you the rights of man, and the duties of riaiii as a responsible citizen of the llritieh Empire, And i tirmiy be. lieve that it is a most dangerous thing for any Due" Ide treating of politics to ignore the de- mands and neceS8itie" of the mind and heart, supposing that politics have to do with the bo iy alcne. If the legislators of a country in enhancing and fostering the comforts of the body, and the materia] weaith of a i-at:.>n, iorget tint umii is an inimorial being, they will cooirr.it an awtully fertile mistake, ard the c.uatry will terribly sutler for it sooner or ia-.er. Con? queutiy the true science of politics demands the study of moral principles, as weU as discoveries, physical wants, national aspirations, and historical investigations. It is not safe for legiela'.ore to forget that man lias soul and l-)u,V. aLd that to dvthe, and beautify t)?, bo.iy alone iB like sending: a Urge and magnificently built vessel, under full sails, au::iUt the whir, ci?etcd billows of ;hc hurricane, ir/arialod ocean, withont redder or baliat, 0 how Boon it w?i I fall a prey to the storm angered monsters of t'. c deep. Llandoveut Coli.i.gk.—I'ne first tie for the South Wales Challenge Cup was played at the Swansea cricket fielu on Wednesday between the above teams, and resulted in a viotory for the Llandovery College. The weather was as un. favourable as it could be, rain falling fast during the afternoon and making the ground in very bad condition for play indeed, some portions of it were covered with water. Notwithstanding these depressing circumstances the play was carriad On with great spirit by both teams, and finished about 4-0, when the score was one goal .tod nine touches down for Llaudoverv College, against or. „> touch-down for the Tenth G.R.V. COWBEIWIK GBAMMAR St'HOOI. v, Xksv!' Team.—Ihe ,11001 could not expect to be a match' for a place like Newport, and so only presumed to play the second twelve, but, as a matter of fact, their opponents induded several men who fre- quently play in the best matches. The game l c-azne off ut Newport on Saturday. Eailtou t kicked off for Newport. The ground, not i1H, proved by a previous match that afternoon, between some of the boys of the town, was dread- tuliy slushy. and made it utterly impossible for anyone to run far or fast with the ball. The match therefore chiefly consisted of a succession ¡ of a,rimmageo, in which the greater weight of the Newport men naturally overpowered the boys, who were not often able to carry the ball into th, enemy's quarters. Nevertheless, b; in8h¡ I pulled tho match out of the live, w".Dig by )I"? goal to four. I
