LLANDUDNO.I
LLANDUDNO. Owing to the constant changes, and the great in flux of new visitors that take place weekly in Elan- (iiidno, we deem it prudent to allow the following Report to appear in the Directory' during the pre- sent season, hoping it may have the desired effect to arouse the sympathy and seettie the co-operation ol those for whose accommodation the movement ori- ginated — CHURCH ACCOMMODATION AT L LAN. DUDNO. I "_I.A..I A public meeting wiis Ileltl al lae .,a\10Ual 'uvv.- room, Llandudno, on Wednesday, June 15, to consider tile best step. to be taken towards iiicreasit; Church Accommodation in the town and puinh 01 Lh/Jdndn", which wes tendered necesstry iu consequence of the over-crowded stale of the Church du ill* the swnitne.- seasons. The Incumbent and Ch.Ilhlillil"- g,eally exerted themselves iu obtaining a suitable plice ot worship for visitors and attached members of the Esta- blished t'hurch, who were frequently disappointed in their eudeamura to obtain an access to the hacked edince raised within (he boundary of thi Uouribhing w-tietnig meet .u,h an ein@rget)cy the SciluoIluom licensed for Divine Senicr, and .dlitio"al senices per- ?eu in ??' St. T'u?oC ??hurc)!. which had been restored through the generosity of W. some few years ago. But, notwithstanding all, the three places hive already proved inadequal to toe demand: and therefore it is that an appeal is made to toe liberality of I ha Christian public for the necessary aid towards the erection of a new and sp-scious (Jhurcli in Llandudno. The attendance though not numerous, was ind comprisod some of the most influential iuhaoitants Upon the motion of f. C. Rodeo, Esq., seconded by W. F. Chapman, Esq., the Rev. J. Morgan, M.A., incumbent of the parish, look the chair. The Chairm,.n in a,IJre'sin the meetin s.it! h" wished he coultl have congratulated them u.iou the at- tendance of a greater assembly than he then saw before him. But they all knew that great result. had often arisen from very small beginnings, and he hoped lite re- suit of that meeting would be the same. (Hear, hear.) They were all aware of its objects, and the importance 01 increased Church accommodation was pateut to those present at the services provided there on Sunday. Dur- ing the summer season of last year, the number of ser- vices held in the parish etch S,w,lay was 8-two Welsh and two English lu St. George's Church, two services in St. Tudno's Church, and two in the school-room, 'the multiplicity of servicecs required a great body of cler), as it waS impossible to do the duties required in each place with she 8mall stafl' over which they had command in that parish. in a place of such growing- importance as that, he contended that the first step they ought to ta ke was to ptw ide fur the spiritual welfare of those upon whom in a great mpasute they depended for their sttp 1 port; and to tbem,Church accommodation was absoltiti) necessary. (Applause). With t e 4 1 rd to the best plan; of proceeding the rev. gentlemun st-te I, upon the auiho- rily of fr. (JUSI, LJfd .\loSIJ'II's legal adviser, that the noble lord, the Hon. Mr. Mostin and himself, were 1 ready to meet them in a very fair and consistent man- net and Mr. Cust went so far as to tell him, that land would be given for a site of the new Churel) he did not say what sum of money the noble lord would give, but that he would give the land, and contribute accord- ing to his ability. (Cheers.) Mi, Cust wanted somor thing definite at the hands of the parishioners, in orde- to lay the case before M r. Mostyn, and adopt the neces- sary measures for his co-operation. Upon seeing the crowded state of the church last Sunday, he was—he would not say inspite(i-btit by the impulse of the mo- ment he (the cluit man) was prompted to convene Ihllt meeling; and having met together, he hoped they would arrive at something definite, so that they would be enabled to communicate with Mr. Cust, and bring the matter fairly before the public. (Applause). J. Williams, Esq., Bodafon, said, they would allow him as one of the Churchwardens of the parish, and the olde-t parishioner present, to express his g'eat anxiety for the result of the meeting which they had attended that day, notwithstanding the small number which sur- rounded him. As the Chairman had already said, they should not de-pisesmall beginnings, which often brought forth important end! In the year 1839, they had no Church in the village, which now is a town, but they ha,1 "II r", go to old St Tudno's Church. After the storm that i-.ttk place in 1*38, by which it. roof came down, a numher of the parishioners consulted together, and in- quired whrther they should begin to repair the old or huild a new Church. There were then no visitors in Llandudno; but, notwithstanding, they tried the at- tempt to huild. new one, and they soon saw that 110 less a sum than £:I)OO was required for i's completion. Mr. Worthiogton came forward and put down bis name for jEoOt) towards it, and various other persons subsciibed according to their means. The Chtttch was built, and was Daid for. (Cheers.) Now, if in the year 1839 the sum of 92ooo were so obtained, coutd they, he asked, with so many new houses, increased facilities, rich visit- OfS, and wealthy proprietor- not obtain a far greater sum to build House of Prayer in that place, dedicated to the honour of Goill (Cheers.) The three places already enumerated by the Chairman, had not only be- come loo small, but entailed upon them considerable ex- peuse and inconvenience, besides scattering the mem- bers of the Church to different places in the parish. He had 110 doubt, it all would wotk earnestly in this good cause, God would ultimately bless their efforts and they would have a new and spacious editice to ena. ble them to worship their laker according to the dic- tates of their consciences. Though a humble individual, he was quite willing to go itito tlic! according to his means and ability. (Applause.) Mr. Moore, architect, alluded to his long experience of ecclesiastical architecture, and concluded by otfering hi. professional services gratuitously in the etecti011 ot the contemplated new Church, which was as good as a dona- tiou of S50. The Rev. J. Cl rke, Rector of Stratford, near Man- chester, and Ru,al Dean, upon being called upon hy the Chairman, nid, ao It tranger among them, it gave biOI greal plensura to witness Iheir endeavours to the want so generally complained of iu this town. He had been the means of building a new church, school, and parsonage-house. Therefore, he knew what it was, and could well sympathise with them on the present occa. sion, A. the Chairman had said, it was not quile riht that strangers nnd vision aholllu take the iniliative; but when it was once mooted, they would soon see how reaiiy they were to assist and co-operate with them, He thought it very desirable when the church was built, that visitors should be allowed to take seats for a week, a month, or more, if a moderate charge, which would enable the clergy to be supported, From his own experience, he thouzht a church might be erected in Llanduduo to accommodate 1000 people at £2 per head. In Manchester it cost more. He saw no reason why they should begitata any longei- about it. He noticed several persons in church last Sunday, who would be most happy to contribute to so deserving an object. (Cheers.) W. F. Chapman, E?q., considered the plan recom. mended by the g?.ti?!n who had jUlt spo" refcrence to lotting a number of pews, au excellent On and likely to facilitate the object ill view, )lr. A 4 o very kindly offered his services gratuitously,*nd thou.k he (Ir. Chapman) could not do the same, he would be most happy to endorse the offer with coins of the realm ■ mounting to 5Q guineas. (Applause.) As IJr. Wil: Iiams had very properly remai ked, small beginning have often great endings; and il in IS;¡9. the parishion. era were enabled to erect a chuich at £20.00. surely in 1850, they \\oul,1 be em. bled to raile £ (iOoO for the same purpose. lIe would never be satisfied unless he saw it erected. No one seems to go away but what it delighted with the place and rererred to an iti-tmce of a friend of his whom lie had induced to Come down and see the plce,an,1 was so pleased with it,illit he soon re. turned, and brought bis family here. When they sa" instances 01 that kltlCl continually occurring, it behoved them to do everything in their power to make it still more attractive. He himself came down AS an invalid ititi had paid large Slims of money in the shape of doc- 101" bill. but since he Ilad come there, thanks to the Almighty, he quite reciuited his health, atid he did not think the doctor's bill for himsdf and amounted It) more than £ 10 altogether. He I' r < li. led by advo. eating the erec:ion of a church that would be a blessing and an ornament to the place, and a g. oi) to the Most Hih. (Applause.) George Fefton, Esq, said that all ought (0 fee! an interest ill the objeel ,.1 that meeting, a:,d though he wi-hed not to be judged by any outward demonstration of :,is attachment to the Church of England, he ttlllhe liveliest interest in its welfare. With thai interest and the position he "eld a; archirecl to tire est t'e, "e would do all in his power to further the object in vjew. Hehtihg to ht:> seaices gtatuitously offered, he Ihouirht eveijthing should be thrown opon upon fair and legiti- mate basis. He would give a 6ubscdp!ion, whether ;,is services were retained or not. lie thought the esti. aletl coat of £2 per head would be too little, and that church built of !()f)e\\ (Irk, eipaLle to &eclmmodate 1,0')0 people, and such as would be worthy of the place -night lie built at toper fiea-l. There ought to be a ijen^ra] movement of the inhabitants in favour id thii I"<lject, Dissenters as well as Churchmen, (hear, heu) and he had no doubt lint Di..oenler. would join and co-operate with them, because they ought to have an interest in it as well as themselves, 8S visitors did not 1.(0 round to inquite whether those whom thej took lodgings from w, re Dissenters or Churchmen. He wished iliem every success, and h"p< <1 the in ahiranll would study their own interests, and retlect upon the responsibility thvy incurred in a\lowiu/! such" deli. cier.cy to exist any longer ill their lown. ( Aplit use.) Rev. Nlr. Clarke, to remove any wiong impiessioa that might have been produced by what he had said, ilid not mean to recommend them a church maile of brick work, but thought that in a place which abounded with «toties a Church might be built at that rate, and quoted an eminent author who h",( much expert, nee in CiMKch-building in support ol his asseriion. However, he did not know what the price of labour was in that part. It,. Moore agreed with the Rev. J. Clarke that £2 per head would build a substantial church; but that it would requite £ 2 10s. per head to build a suitable one in L"iudna, makil) the amount £2,51)0. The Chairman 10oll,J upon that meeting a prflimio. ary, and what was said,as mere suggestions, whic might again be takon into consideration. lie had not the et. perience which the rev. arntlemon who had sp ken vvai (if in churrh.bu¡:dio¡r, but he had had a little, ,n,1 in R parish where Ire was previous to coming to Llandudno—which was purely an agricultutal one- after studying economy toils fulest extent, ih,y could not build a Chu'ch under f3 a head. He war inclined to think, with lr. Fellon-it miaht be his vanity-but he ho; ed not, that '.hey should erecllO the glory of God» be-iuiifnl Church, worthy o' the place. When they read of the Church in these da)., gaining so much ground, and the number of rich persons who visited the place in summer, he thought it was not too much for them to cause the erection of an edifice as handsome as possible, (Cheers.) T. C. Roden, Esq., said, the remHk. generally made, to hitn mere matters (If delail though it was well and right tlr.t an opinion should he expressed as to what kind of accomm ■datii n was required. Whatever differences of opinion existed, he hoped it would be such as would redound to the glnry of the Mo-t High, and be ;1 b!8.,jD;! to the inhabitants, and those who their town. With a view of the ma'ter definite be- fore the mel-tio1 he had prepared & formal resolution, which he wruld propose to their notice. It ws mani. fe-t to all, notwilbslnndinj the erreat eflorto matle by the Clercy in providing [tiper Church accommodation,* large proportioll were unable to gain access toworship their God according to their own convictions. Though their Incumbent had provided eight Se, vices esclt Sun- day for them, which was most praiseworthy in him, he still failed to provide "Hthat was requisite. In addition to the suggestion of letting pews for a certain period, lis thought a number of freeholds miht be created to per- sons who would subscribe, say E.50, which, with the oc- casional letting, would bring R ln-ge income in. fr. Roden concluded by proposing, "that an extension of Church Accommodation in the parish of Llanduduo il essentially necessary." Mr. James Williams, in seconding the resnlulion, reo ferred to the crying want which was so manifest to them all, and endorsed the opinions already expressed, ih tit was the duty of the inhabitants to provide proper Church accommodation for the visitors, and unless they did !1, strangers would surely go to other places where such accommodation might be got. (Applapse.) The Rer. S. Clarke proposed the next resolut:on, ie. ended by H. S.
