Not wishing, however, to rest my information as regards Ireland, on the visit, I had made, I was deteiaiineil to try it 111 another direction. The word "pot on the break" was given, and that brought us to a halt. This stoppage was taken more in the way of joke than earnest, and flashes or wit wpre simultaneously thrown out. by the passengers—many of us got out, and I for one. In the mean time a gentle- manly person took charge of the engine, and began te. work the various levers, while the engine driiet w:>s applying his oil can to the whcel8 and cranks, and others scattering sand or small giavel on the rail. for some distnnee in advance of us. The great entrance-door to the Cathedra! wa oprn, and as it was now more than past six, the shades 01 the evening gave it. a very imposing appearance. I WREXHAM RACES. I Thursday, Oct. G, Stewards: Sir W. W. Wynn, Bart E. Peel, Ksq.> and R. Palmer, Esq. This meeting, judiciously appointed for the two days following Chester Races, displayed unmistaka- ble signs of an increasing popularity. It was well conducted, and the proceedings were not devoid of interest. The attendance included many of the principal and influential inhabitants of the town anJ neighbourhood. That rife and true sportsman, Sir W, W. Wynn, was present, and personally superin- tended the effieient. carrying out of the arrangements, Mr Topham discharged the duties ofstai-ter. Mr. White was the Judge. Mr. Johnson, of Wrexham, j evinced a most praiseworthy desire to promote the success of the meeting, and to ensure the accommo- elation of the visitors. Next year several requisite j improvements will be made on the Course, the most important an,1 long desiderated being the erection of a handsome and commodious Stand. The sport.
